My name is Al. (0:00:34) Kev: My name is Kevin (0:00:36) Al: And we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore games. (0:00:39) Kev: You woo supposedly the word on the street is it says on the box (0:00:46) Al: Does it? (0:00:47) Kev: That’s odd, yeah, it does it what does the websites I’m assuming it does (0:00:51) Al: I don’t know. This is a good question. What does it say on the website? (0:00:54) Kev: You know, we’ve never done (0:00:55) Al: It says farming. It says a podcast about farming simulators. (0:00:58) Kev: Well, there you go, I guess we were lying somewhere, you know one of these days (0:01:00) Al: Yeah, classic. (0:01:04) Kev: Not days we should do in April fools and switch it up (0:01:07) Kev: Or we talk about I don’t know something else. I guess we kind of do that sometimes but you know something really different (0:01:12) Al: Something, something else. (0:01:14) Kev: Yeah (0:01:16) Kev: We talk about gotcha games, I mean I already do but you know all in oh (0:01:23) Kev: Yeah (0:01:24) Al: Hello. We are going to talk this episode about, I want to have a discussion about remakes. (0:01:25) Kev: Hello listener (0:01:34) Kev: We don’t oh (0:01:34) Al: Specifically remakes of farming games. (0:01:38) Kev: Oh, that’s well hmm. I mean it’s still in the neighborhood like there’s stuff to be discussed for sure (0:01:47) Al: Well, that’s why we’re doing it. (0:01:51) Al: I don’t tend to have topics that I don’t think I’ll have much discussion. (0:01:55) Kev: That is died and I believe that’s factually not true (0:02:00) Al: Wow, how dare, how dare you, how very dare you. (0:02:04) Kev: Oh (0:02:06) Al: Before that, we have a bunch of news, but first of all, Kevin, what have you been up to? (0:02:13) Kev: Okay, let’s see here when I wrote things down (0:02:16) Kev: Okay, Marvel snap. Okay, I should have talked about this earlier because it ended this week, but I mean all snap goes (0:02:22) Kev: It’s good the the new Fantastic Four (0:02:27) Kev: Season with cards based off the movies coming up (0:02:30) Kev: They’re just doing a whole new season like first step family (0:02:34) Kev: First steps whatever but but that’s coming so you know and that looks good (0:02:38) Kev: But I didn’t talk about maximum voltage overdrive or whatever that thing was called (0:02:45) Kev: You played snap outs been a minute. Did you play maximum voltage? (0:02:49) Kev: Do you remember that mode at all? (0:02:50) Al: I think it was around when I was playing, but I don’t think I played it. (0:02:54) Kev: Uh-huh (0:02:56) Al: I did the Deadpool Diner and I did. (0:02:59) Kev: Yeah (0:03:00) Al: There was one other one that I did, but I don’t think I did maximum. (0:03:02) Kev: Okay, so (0:03:04) Kev: So yeah, every once in a while snap introduces these like alternate modes with different rules or different words or whatever (0:03:12) Kev: And so one that they’ve done is called maximum voltage (0:03:16) Kev: and previously maximum voltage was a three-turn game instead of six turns and (0:03:20) Kev: They would give you a random amount like two to four energy every turn like extra so it was you know (0:03:27) Kev: Not just the one two three four (0:03:29) Kev: So you had you could play cards quickly and you had to do on three turns (0:03:34) Kev: It’s a it’s a different pace a game. It’s fun even shorter. I liked it (0:03:41) Kev: Well this past week or two they did maximum voltage overdrive or overcharge whatever’s over something (0:03:50) Kev: Where it was a four-turn game (0:03:53) Kev: The same rules of okay, you get random two to four energy every turn (0:03:59) Kev: on top of what you already have (0:04:02) Kev: But they (0:04:04) Kev: Also filled your deck out with like was it eight or twelve extra random cards in your deck (0:04:10) Kev: Those extra cards had lower costs and higher power (0:04:15) Kev: So it was it was a wild ride because it was a lot of like kind of RNG really right what you get (0:04:22) Kev: It’s hard to build around like, you know real strategy around it (0:04:26) Kev: and you know, I (0:04:28) Kev: I enjoyed it enough. It was fine enough. You know a lot of people don’t like RNG sort of (0:04:34) Kev: modes or strategy so you know I don’t think as popular as other ones but at (0:04:40) Kev: least they tried something right like I always did they say hey try it and then (0:04:43) Kev: we’ll see how it goes but the bigger fiasco was the rewards because when they (0:04:52) Kev: have these side missions they’ll give you usually like a sort of bonus currency (0:04:56) Kev: or side currency or whatever specific for that mode with a shop or reward tier (0:05:01) Kev: or something like that. (0:05:04) Kev: In this case they gave you a shop, you could earn let’s just call them vault points or whatever they were called. (0:05:08) Kev: And so there was a new card in the shop. (0:05:12) Kev: Kid Omega, I don’t know who that character is but they had a decent enough ability. (0:05:16) Kev: But regardless, so yeah, it was a new card and very cool and all. (0:05:24) Kev: But here’s the thing, for the first time ever in one of these side modes, you could not earn the card for free. (0:05:32) Kev: Um… (0:05:34) Kev: Well, I guess you technically could, but… (0:05:36) Kev: So how it works is every eight hours you get a set of three missions, and you get X number of points for it, right? (0:05:44) Kev: Well, people did the math. (0:05:46) Kev: If you did all the missions, every single set of three for every eight hours for the entire duration of the thing, (0:05:52) Kev: you would still have to win 500 games, I think it was, to earn enough points to earn the new card. (0:05:57) Al: That is so many games. (0:06:04) Kev: But… (0:06:04) Al: I don’t think I’ve ever won 500 games combined in the, like, what, combined what, six months (0:06:06) Kev: Yeah, totally. (0:06:14) Kev: I mean, I might be there with you. (0:06:18) Kev: But yeah, so that was wild. (0:06:24) Kev: And a lot of people were up in arms about it, as you can imagine, and I think understandably so. (0:06:30) Kev: Also, because Marvel Snap, traditionally, has been… (0:06:34) Kev: Play-ish where or at least you if you played enough you could get a decent pool of cards or you could get work (0:06:40) Kev: You know the new cards they were releasing if you kept up you could (0:06:45) Kev: You could you could play for free (0:06:48) Kev: the boat the money was either spent on generally speaking on (0:06:55) Kev: Cosmetics, you know variants and bundles (0:06:57) Kev: I guess the season passed you could unlock a new card and that’s ten bucks a month and like that (0:07:02) Kev: But they would drop for free later (0:07:04) Kev: So you didn’t have to do it. But anyways (0:07:08) Kev: Point is that a lot of players feel like the the snap devs are kind of leaning a little more into (0:07:15) Kev: You know pay to win or pay to get the new cards (0:07:19) Kev: So that was a big (0:07:20) Kev: Yeah, big big bit a little bit of fiasco (0:07:25) Kev: and (0:07:26) Kev: Yeah, it’s over now. We went to another mode called sanctum showdown, which is but it’s much slower paced modes fun (0:07:35) Kev: They’re playing it safe. No crazy (0:07:38) Kev: Expensive card or whatever but (0:07:40) Kev: It’s interesting to see (0:07:43) Kev: kind of a shame that they you know, they’re a little money hungry, but (0:07:48) Kev: Cuz though otherwise the game I think is in still in a decent shape (0:07:52) Kev: They’ve released so many cards like I think it’s almost in a state of we can play whatever you want more or less (0:07:59) Kev: But yeah, I mean I’m still playing it. I’m still enjoying it. I did not get the kiddo-megan card (0:08:05) Kev: You know, it’s wild. I saw somebody with that card on day one (0:08:08) Kev: Which means they must have put a lot of money or gold or whatever. Yeah, there’s always an I found the whale. Oh (0:08:08) Al: Hmm there’s always one. There’s always one. Yeah (0:08:16) Kev: Speaking of not having money or wanting money (0:08:20) Kev: Yes, let’s talk about unicorn overlord. So I reached the end of what’s called best stories. That’s the beast land (0:08:30) Kev: Campaign area there’s basically like five countries in the game or whatever and each one is kind of (0:08:34) Kev: Its own little chapter if you will write its own little story and arc and so I reached the end of the best stories chapter (0:08:41) Kev: Which is fine and all the villain was a rat man a rat where rat I guess. I don’t I don’t know how to describe it (0:08:50) Kev: You know, I’ll show you a picture (0:08:52) Kev: but (0:08:53) Kev: And so I enjoyed it. It was a fun chapter. I think the Beast people were cool, but what is funny and (0:09:00) Kev: I can feel it. I learned about this (0:09:04) Kev: When I went online because it felt something felt like it was changing the writing in unicorn overlord who was pretty alright (0:09:12) Kev: Up until around now because they really just kind of did not give the the rat man’s name (0:09:19) Kev: His name was Elgore and he kind of had an interesting story (0:09:23) Kev: The rats were generally oppressed people and he wanted to rise up and then you know, he became a general (0:09:29) Kev: So it’s kind of an interesting story and there was some evil the evil bad guy team (0:09:34) Kev: We’re doing experiments on him yada yada (0:09:38) Kev: But it was really really rushed. And so I kind of looked into it and it turns out (0:09:45) Kev: That oh (0:09:47) Kev: Hold on one second now (0:09:49) Kev: my mic (0:09:51) Kev: Sorry, there we go. Sorry. My mic had a hiccup and I think we’re good now while checking (0:09:57) Kev: double-checking (0:09:58) Al: Sounds fine to me. (0:09:59) Kev: Yes, okay. I lost a few seconds of the recording, but okay. I’m okay (0:10:03) Kev: I don’t know, at least the– (0:10:03) Al: It’s fine now. (0:10:05) Al: Zoom is pretty good at like starting out. (0:10:05) Kev: Yeah, all right (0:10:09) Kev: Well, anyways, so I looked up that why it started feel rushed and turns out that the unicorn (0:10:15) Kev: Overlord development ran out of money and basically the director producer they started funding it out of their own pocket (0:10:22) Kev: so apparently this last (0:10:25) Kev: quarter or so of the the game is gonna feel very rushed and (0:10:30) Kev: There’s no time for story anymore. Which is sad but (0:10:34) Kev: That said the game is still (0:10:38) Kev: Entertaining. I like it. It’s fun. Yeah, like unicorn overlord to two thumbs up from me (0:10:45) Kev: Let’s see (0:10:47) Kev: So yeah, so that’s good. Um, oh, okay follow up from last week (0:10:50) Kev: So we spent a little time having a fun little chat about magic the gathering and capitalism and the $1,000 (0:10:58) Al: Like 20 minutes. (0:10:59) Kev: pack of set of four packs (0:11:02) Kev: and it was all started as you may recall because (0:11:04) Kev: I was looking at the, or you know, the Final Fantasy set of Magic the Gathering cards came out, (0:11:12) Kev: and I did not want to buy them because I didn’t want to spend them, or spend the money for them. (0:11:17) Kev: Well, this week I bought the Final Fantasy card set from Magic the Gathering, virtually, virtually, there’s my caveat, haha. (0:11:26) Kev: Uh, no, I did not spend money, but… yeah, haha, virtual versions of my cardboard. (0:11:27) Al: Oh, wait, that’s that’s even that’s even all right. (0:11:30) Al: I was going to say that’s even worse if you bought digital cards. (0:11:35) Kev: No, no money spent. So I’ve been, I’ve played Magic the Gathering Arena, though that’s the online client. I fired it up to get in there and try. (0:11:43) Al: Good game. I’ve not played in a long time, but when I was playing, I was doing a lot of arenas. (0:11:49) Kev: Alright, it’s good. It feels comparable, I think, to, you know, Pokemon TCG live. (0:11:54) Al: Oh, I think it’s way better. (0:11:56) Al: I think it’s way, way better. (0:11:57) Al: I think the I mean, it’s been a while since I played it. (0:12:00) Al: But in my experience, the app was much less slow in menus and the effects were much better. (0:12:05) Kev: Yeah. (0:12:08) Kev: I agree with that. It is much, much more polished, right, overall. A little fancier. And you’re right, a little less laggy. (0:12:17) Kev: But, yeah, but I mean, the point is, it serves as a decent online, you know, substitute for the paper game. (0:12:26) Kev: So I got some, yeah, Final Fantasy cards there and played a little, doing a choco bow deck. (0:12:33) Kev: I’m really upset (0:12:35) Kev: Those cards are really good, art-wise and gameplay-wise (0:12:42) Kev: They have, because I mentioned I was playing Final Fantasy, the proper FFTCG (0:12:49) Kev: That game doesn’t have equipment cards (0:12:51) Kev: Magic the Gathering does, so Magic the Gathering can include iconic items and weapons (0:12:57) Kev: Like the Buster Sword, or a cup of instant noodles from Final Fantasy XV (0:13:04) Kev: So I’m more…a little… (0:13:05) Kev: I’m jealous that Magic did it so well. (0:13:07) Kev: Whoever…the people working on the Final Fantasy set, they really love Final Fantasy. (0:13:13) Kev: They have Souplex the Train as a card. (0:13:17) Kev: People who know FF5 understand that reference. (0:13:25) Kev: But yeah, I mean, I try to… (0:13:27) Kev: I’m still thinking about it. I’m looking at it. (0:13:31) Kev: The card’s proper. I’m not gonna buy it yet. (0:13:35) Kev: Oh, it’s been…I’ve been craving it. It’s a siren song. (0:13:38) Kev: So I had to…you know…I had to at least do it virtually to enjoy it a little. (0:13:46) Kev: But I digress. That’s what I’ve been up to this week. (0:13:50) Kev: What about you, Al? What’s going on? (0:13:52) Al: Well, let’s see, what have I been up to? (0:13:56) Al: Shock surprise. (0:13:58) Al: I have been playing some Mario Kart World up. (0:14:00) Kev: Yeah, you’re going for it, man. Getting all those knockouts here. I’ve seen your progress. (0:14:04) Al: Yes, so update on that. (0:14:07) Al: I have done all of the Grand Prix’s 150, three stars and all of the knockout (0:14:13) Al: all of the knockout tours, 150, three stars. (0:14:19) Al: and I have done enough in free. (0:14:22) Al: Rome to unlock mirror mode. (0:14:25) Kev: Okay. (0:14:27) Al: And I have unlocked all of the costumes. (0:14:30) Kev: Oh, you’re- you’ve done it all almost pretty much at this point. (0:14:33) Al: I am still missing three characters. (0:14:36) Kev: Wait, wha- oh. How d- uh- uh-huh. (0:14:38) Al: But that’s because they are the Kamek characters, (0:14:43) Al: so you have to be on a specific course (0:14:47) Al: and someone use the Kamek behind you on that specific course. (0:14:50) Kev: Uh, okay, I did notice that I got some kamiks and I think I got kamiks characters out of that. (0:14:53) Al: There’s a chance that you get one that character, so. (0:15:00) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:15:01) Al: So I’ve got most of them, but I’m still missing three of them. (0:15:04) Al: And it’s like they are dreadful to try and force like the bet. (0:15:08) Kev: Yeah, who are they? (0:15:10) Al: How who am I missing? (0:15:12) Al: Let me check my spreadsheet. (0:15:14) Al: I am missing Rocky, wrench. (0:15:18) Al: Peepa and Swoop. (0:15:20) Kev: Oof, oof, oh man, I like swoop. (0:15:21) Al: I have the rest of them. (0:15:22) Al: So that’s I have that’s 15 out of 18 characters unlocked (0:15:26) Al: and 103 out of 103 costumes unlocked. (0:15:31) Al: So, yeah, and I’ve got all the vehicles as well. (0:15:36) Al: All 40 of them. (0:15:37) Al: So I am going to I’m definitely going to do. (0:15:40) Al: I’m definitely going to start doing mirror modes. (0:15:42) Al: I really want to restart all the mirror modes (0:15:45) Al: before I get too much muscle memory for specific courses. (0:15:46) Kev: Yeah. (0:15:49) Kev: Mmm. (0:15:50) Al: Right, because that that’s when it becomes really hard. (0:15:52) Kev: Yeah, you’re right. (0:15:53) Kev: That’s an excellent point. (0:15:53) Al: But I’d love I’d love to three star mirror mode (0:15:56) Al: because I’ve never restarted every mirror mode in a Mario cart. (0:16:00) Kev: I mean you’re like there, you’re wide as well, right? You’ve gone the 90%? (0:16:06) Al: Yeah, it’s I guess the thing is it’s just about like time now, right? (0:16:10) Kev: Uh-huh. (0:16:10) Al: Like we’ve got two and a bit weeks until Donkey Kong comes out. (0:16:15) Al: That’s basically my deadline, right? (0:16:15) Kev: I was about to say, that’s the deadline, right? (0:16:17) Al: Like if it’s if I’ve not done it by (0:16:20) Al: Donkey Kong coming out, it’s probably never happening. (0:16:23) Kev: Yeah, well, maybe they’ll release some DLC, but I understand what you generally say. (0:16:28) Al: Yeah, but at that point, I don’t I think at that point I’ll play the DLC, (0:16:31) Al: but I don’t think I’ll go back and try and do the other mirror modes. (0:16:31) Kev: Yeah, it’ll be out of your system, I get it. (0:16:34) Al: Right. (0:16:36) Al: So we’ll see. We’ll see how I feel. (0:16:38) Al: But I’m going to I’m going to at least try and see how far I get. (0:16:42) Al: But obviously it’s quite few and, you know, I can see I should be able to do them. (0:16:47) Al: Right. Because I’ve done one hundred and fifty. (0:16:49) Al: I should be able to do mirror mode. (0:16:50) Al: I don’t think I’m in use to them enough that I will cause problems. (0:16:53) Al: Although maybe there’s a couple of courses that are recreations of previous ones, (0:16:58) Al: like the Mario Bros circuit, which is just like the continuation from the one (0:17:00) Kev: Yeah (0:17:03) Al: and since the sna is- (0:17:06) Al: right? That one might be trouble because I suspect I’ll have muscle memory for that course (0:17:06) Kev: Yeah (0:17:12) Kev: Sure sure (0:17:12) Al: but we’ll see, we’ll see. I’m gonna try and we’ll see how I go (0:17:17) Al: and I think that’s all I was considering. So have you done much free roam? (0:17:22) Kev: Not too much myself now (0:17:25) Al: So you’ve got the P switches, you’ve got peach medallions and you’ve got the question mark blocks. (0:17:27) Kev: Yeah (0:17:29) Kev: Yeah (0:17:32) Al: the only one that’s actually like shown on the map. (0:17:36) Al: The P switches where each course has a certain number of P switches and it shows you how (0:17:38) Kev: Mm-hmm (0:17:40) Al: many you’ve got. So I’m considering doing the P switches, but there’s no way I’m going (0:17:47) Al: to look for all of the peach medallions and all not not P switches sorry the question mark blocks. (0:17:52) Al: It’s not the P switches the question mark blocks. There’s no way I’m going for the piece all the (0:17:56) Al: P switches and all the peach medallions. I’ll probably do some more just playing around in (0:18:00) Al: free roam and if I see some I will do some, but I’m not going to go out my way to get (0:18:04) Al: every day because it’s like (0:18:06) Al: 300 P switches or something it’s mad how many there are I’m not going to do (0:18:08) Kev: Yeah, you don’t want to collect all the Koroks? (0:18:12) Al: all of them definitely not but I can see myself doing all the question mark (0:18:17) Al: blocks just because they’re like clearly like there’s six on this course six on (0:18:22) Al: this course six on this course I could see myself doing that but I’m not I’m (0:18:28) Al: not going all in on that at this point right like we will see (0:18:31) Kev: man. I gotta say the free roam is a little disappointing from what I’ve experienced and (0:18:39) Kev: seen. I was really hoping for, for lack of a better word, secrets, right? Little nooks (0:18:47) Kev: and crannies you could explore that, you know, you wouldn’t experience on a race or whatever, (0:18:52) Al: - Yeah, yeah, yeah. (0:18:53) Kev: right? Like in, you know, shooting for the stars, like even a handful of courses not in any of the (0:19:01) Kev: pre-write, you know, unofficially labeled, like you enter a cave and all of a sudden (0:19:06) Kev: there’s this little racetrack down there. Stuff like that, but anyways, yeah, there’s not much (0:19:12) Kev: going on other than unlocking mirror mode, I guess, on free roam. Although I do like the (0:19:20) Kev: Princess Peach Castle, the window easter egg, that’s fun. (0:19:23) Al: Yeah, yeah, it’s I will agree that I think free roam is a little bit of a disappointment, but yeah, I am still very much having fun. (0:19:35) Al: And I will definitely be playing this with people in person a lot. (0:19:40) Kev: I’m sure. I mean, it’s Mario Kart. It’s built for that. (0:19:41) Al: No, it’s 100% worth. (0:19:44) Al: Yeah, it’s 100% worth it, especially as, you know, it was what, like 30 quid in the bundle, right? (0:19:49) Kev: Yep. (0:19:50) Kev: Exactly. (0:19:50) Al: Like it was very much worth that. (0:19:53) Al: And just, it is, I still stand by it’s the most fun to control the, with the new physics reactions. Like I feel like all the other ones will feel quite stiff going back to them. (0:20:04) Kev: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don’t think (0:20:10) Kev: Yeah, I yeah, I don’t think a lot of people are gonna push back on that it does feel very good to control (0:20:16) Kev: I agree (0:20:19) Kev: Yeah, it’s it’s I mean it’s Mario Kart right like it’s still gonna be good (0:20:22) Kev: It’s a but it is funny though that you know insert the the Simpsons sheep gif when Donkey Kong bonanza comes out (0:20:28) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely. That is going to be like a couple of weeks of just (0:20:34) Kev: Yeah (0:20:37) Al: like that’s the only thing I’m playing. Yeah. And we, has the direct been since we recorded (0:20:39) Kev: It looks so good, I only more (0:20:44) Al: our last episode? I can’t remember. Super fun. I’m so excited for this. I think it’s (0:20:44) Kev: I I can’t remember. We haven’t talked about it either way, but that’s uh (0:20:51) Kev: that’s a (0:20:52) Kev: good looking direct (0:20:53) Al: really, yeah, I think they, that was a great direct because it shows (0:20:58) Al: it kind of confirmed a bunch of the stuff we already knew while also giving us enough (0:21:03) Al: to be like, oh, there’s more. Right. And, and I think it’s really, I think it’s really (0:21:09) Al: good looking. Like I love the different effects that you get in transforming into other animals (0:21:16) Al: and also having Pauline basically be like a parrot on your shoulder. Right. It’s really (0:21:22) Kev: yep it’s it’s so good I i love the online reaction that we the internet gave of like you (0:21:23) Al: fun. (0:21:30) Kev: know the trifecta of uh was it ralph and vanellope uh sully and boo and now we’ve got dk and pauline (0:21:38) Kev: you know big guy and then little girl um it’s it’s fun (0:21:38) Al: Look, it works, right? Like why, why break it? Why try and fix it if it’s not broken, (0:21:47) Kev: Exactly. It’s great. Um, yeah, I’m I’m very pumped. Uh, (0:21:52) Kev: for uh uh the the game or general, I guess. Um, it’s I’m a (0:21:59) Kev: little disappointed that we don’t get the animal buddies (0:22:02) Kev: per se. I mean, I know Rambi’s in there and and it’s kind of (0:22:06) Kev: in there, but you know, it’s it’s the functions been replaced (0:22:09) Kev: by your transformations and the transformations are cool. I (0:22:12) Kev: won’t lie. Um but uh I don’t know. I’m a guy who likes Rambi. (0:22:17) Al: Well, look, I don’t have any real history with the previous DK games other than trying them and not enjoying them. (0:22:23) Al: So I don’t particularly mind. (0:22:27) Al: I’m not a lower muncher. (0:22:30) Kev: Sure, I mean, it’s not even like lore stuff because that’s uh, that’s just uh, you know, I guess mechanics or (0:22:38) Kev: Gameplay traditions, whatever. But if you want to talk about lore, I mean we can get trying to you know (0:22:43) Kev: We can try figure out why on earth (0:22:48) Kev: Does how is Pauline hanging out a DK? How does that timeline work? (0:22:52) Al: Well, I think everything lines up if you just ignore the original DK game. I don’t think (0:22:59) Al: anything else is a problem. I think it’s only that. And I think that this ties in so much (0:23:00) Kev: Yeah. Which… (0:23:05) Al: better to Odyssey, because why would Pauline be the mayor of a city that’s named after (0:23:11) Al: her kidnapper? But she would be the mayor of a city that’s named after her hero. (0:23:12) Kev: Yeah, I like the way you think there that’s a good point, yeah, but and also like this (0:23:28) Kev: is even more so than Odyssey cuz I mean Paulina was in there was you know, she’s first time (0:23:32) Kev: back in forever or whatever but she’s you know, she has a starring role finally, that’s (0:23:40) Al: Yeah, my I also I have another theory that it might be time (0:23:47) Kev: All right, oh well there you are now we’re talking let’s get into that Zelda split timeline (0:23:55) Al: Well, I don’t even think it needs to be a split timeline, right? (0:23:58) Al: Like, if something happens and she gets shot forward and then she goes back in time after this, (0:24:04) Kev: Oh, I like it. I like. (0:24:05) Al: you know, she could still go through the whole thing, because the thing is, right, (0:24:09) Al: Pauline in Donkey Kong, that’s not this Donkey Kong, that’s Cranky Kong. (0:24:14) Kev: that is cranky kong who does exist yeah oh I like that that’s clever yeah there you go all right I like it (0:24:15) Al: So, you know, she’s obviously from the past. (0:24:22) Al: Or, or, here’s another suggestion. (0:24:25) Al: If Donkey Kong, if Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong are both Donkey Kong, then maybe Pauline. (0:24:32) Al: This could be a different Pauline. Maybe this is Pauline’s daughter. (0:24:35) Kev: You know, I mean, that’s well established, right? Bowser Jr. looks just like Bowser when he’s a baby, I guess, so you know. (0:24:45) Al: Pauline Jr. (0:24:46) Kev: Pauline Jr. could be! (0:24:49) Kev: Although, okay, you know what? You know what? I’ll even point the bat at the stands here. (0:24:54) Kev: I bet we get little Pauline here as a character in Mario Kart World War 2. (0:24:58) Al: I hope so. I do hope there is some stuff coming, so I saw someone note that some of the characters (0:25:06) Al: have lots of costumes, and some of them have almost none. In fact, some of them have none. (0:25:11) Al: And the interesting thing is, one of the characters that has almost none is Donkey Kong. He only (0:25:12) Kev: Yeah. (0:25:16) Al: has one costume. Just before a Donkey Kong game comes out, suspicious. So are we interested (0:25:17) Kev: It is very strange considering, you know, he’s… (0:25:21) Kev: Uh-oh, uh-oh! (0:25:28) Al: in a Mario Kart World update coming with some Donkey Kong costumes to encourage you (0:25:34) Kev: I mean (0:25:36) Al: to be interested in the new game? Maybe. Yeah. And we obviously have all the baby characters, (0:25:37) Kev: If if it feels like the most obvious dough in the world, right, um, so yeah (0:25:46) Al: so would we get a young Pauline, as well as the babies that we’ve got of the other characters? (0:25:48) Kev: I like it (0:25:51) Kev: How cute (0:25:51) Al: We don’t have Pauline at all. Oh no, we do have Pauline. But also Pauline only has one (0:25:53) Kev: We do it, Paul (0:25:58) Kev: Like a generic racer costume, so there you go (0:25:58) Al: costume. So, you know, the two of them, both in an upcoming game. You know, I will be very (0:26:05) Kev: Yeah, yeah, yeah (0:26:09) Al: disappointed if there’s not. But this makes you wonder what else could be related to things, (0:26:11) Kev: I you know that’s I don’t think you’re being unreasonable (0:26:16) Al: right? Birdo only has two costumes, so that’s an interesting one. Could there be a Birdo (0:26:22) Al: thing coming up? Who knows? Lakitu only has two costumes, and there is an update to… (0:26:28) Al: Why can’t I remember the name? Goodness me. Mario Party. Which Lakitu obviously has a (0:26:34) Kev: Which Mario what okay? (0:26:40) Al: big part in Mario Party. Maybe I’m stretching at this point. Who knows? But we’ll see. I’m (0:26:41) Kev: Yeah (0:26:48) Kev: We we will see I think that’s the end that’s all we can kind of say really um (0:26:54) Al: I’m sure we can say much more, but let’s not. (0:26:56) Kev: Well, well, okay, yeah, you know, I will say this like each his legs still make me very uncomfortable. I (0:26:59) Al: Fair, very fair. (0:27:03) Kev: Don’t like it (0:27:05) Kev: Get in the car. Don’t look at those freak. Yeah, no, no, I don’t like it. That’s (0:27:08) Al: Don’t put him on a bike. (0:27:15) Al: He should be in the cloud cart. (0:27:19) Al: That’s the only one he’s allowed to be in. (0:27:20) Kev: Yeah, you really or you know, I don’t care I (0:27:23) Al: No, I’m just saying. (0:27:26) Kev: Look, I don’t care if it’s like (0:27:29) Kev: Horrendous I don’t care if it’s horrendous like animation clipping just (0:27:35) Kev: Just stick the the dang (0:27:36) Al: The cloud around every cart you put them in. (0:27:40) Kev: Yeah, yeah, when he’s the bike it’s just clipping right to the cloud (0:27:45) Kev: Okay, you make it it’s worth it (0:27:50) Al: All right, so that’s my car. (0:27:52) Al: I’ve also I don’t want to talk too much about this, but I do want to mention it. (0:27:58) Al: I’ve opened Lens Island again and started playing that. (0:28:02) Al: So for context, I originally backed on. (0:28:06) Al: Kickstarter and I started playing it when it first came out, but it had no controller (0:28:11) Al: support and basically was horrible to use on the steam deck. (0:28:16) Al: So I have started playing it again, and it is less horrible to play on the steam deck. (0:28:24) Kev: But that’s always the bar we want less horrible (0:28:25) Al: And I think that’s as far as I’m going to go on this comp on it just now. (0:28:33) Al: I will probably go into it a lot more in the next. (0:28:36) Al: episode, probably, but no promises. (0:28:38) Kev: Okay, fine. Okay. (0:28:43) Al: So that is a thing that is currently happening that I am not going to give any opinions on right now. (0:28:52) Al: But finally, we are recording this on Saturday, the 28th of June. (0:28:57) Al: I have just finished the first day of Pokémon Go Fest 2025 Global. (0:29:01) Kev: Oh, is that what’s going on? Okay. (0:29:03) Al: That’s what’s today. (0:29:04) Al: Yeah. So, uh, I had. (0:29:06) Al: Fun. I got a few hours where I was allowed to remove my (0:29:14) Al: responsibilities from children and just go play Pokemon in Edinburgh. (0:29:17) Al: And yeah, I got a good amount of stuff done and I enjoyed that. (0:29:20) Kev: Cool. What is going on? What are they releasing? (0:29:24) Al: This is the Crowned in Shield form Zacian and Zamazenta. (0:29:30) Kev: Wait they weren’t in there already that’s weird, but okay (0:29:32) Al: No, they had the base forms, but not this Crowned in Shield form. (0:29:37) Al: Uh, because they’ve got to release them separately to make the most money, right? (0:29:42) Kev: - Oh, yeah, yeah. (0:29:46) Al: But yeah, so, uh, yeah, I think they did this one a lot better than the previous (0:29:52) Al: other forms, because with Curum and with, uh, oh, what’s the other one? (0:29:59) Kev: Uh, uh, uh, Nick Asma. (0:30:03) Al: Nick Rosma, thank you. (0:30:05) Al: with both of them. (0:30:06) Al: You have a certain amount of energy you need to get to fuse them, but if you separate (0:30:15) Al: them, you have to use the same amount of energy again to fuse them again. (0:30:21) Al: It’s like a thousand-fuse energy, or whatever they call it. (0:30:25) Al: I can’t remember and I don’t care. (0:30:26) Kev: Yeah, that’s correct (0:30:29) Al: Once you fuse them, you use up that thousand, but you get like a hundred per raid that you (0:30:33) Al: do. (0:30:34) Al: raids to get enough defuse once (0:30:35) Kev: Okay (0:30:36) Al: set of them. And then if you’re like, “Oh, I fused the wrong one”, and you unfuse it, (0:30:37) Kev: Yeah, oh (0:30:42) Al: you then have to do another 10 raids to do it. But of course, those raids were only available (0:30:45) Kev: It sounds like a lot (0:30:48) Al: for one weekend. They’ve never been available again, so you can’t get the energy anymore. (0:30:55) Al: It’s dreadful! (0:30:56) Kev: That sounds like a lot. (0:30:58) Al: Well, the good thing is that Zamasenta and Zacian, once you turn it into crown form, (0:31:04) Al: If you revere its form, you can… (0:31:06) Al: you can then do it again without using any energy. (0:31:09) Kev: Sure, okay. Okay, I mean, that’s that’s definitely nice. I just, man, I just got to say I didn’t go that long at all. But hearing how like, because I think Megas were kind of the first one where you had, you know, special mega energy or whatever. Like, it’s, oh, it doesn’t sound great. Just the oddest. (0:31:33) Al: The the Megas actually I think is a lot better than it was when it first launched. (0:31:38) Al: So like you you can get one free mega for each of your mega Pokemon once a week. (0:31:45) Al: So once you’ve done the initial one, every week, you can do it once for free. (0:31:49) Al: You only have to pay more energy after the first one (0:31:53) Al: if you want to do it faster than that. (0:31:55) Al: And as you get up the power, like once you can level up the mega and once you get (0:32:00) Al: Mega level 3. It matters. (0:32:04) Al: How much it costs so like every if you were to do it every single day, you wouldn’t be using a huge amount of energy so it’s it’s not it’s it’s much better than it was initially launched and I get why you know it is a bit frustrating that you still have to use it energy at all but it’s a lot less annoying you also get energy if you walk with them as a buddy and stuff like that so you know it’s it’s fine it’s fine it’s these fusing ones that are the most annoying because it’s like. (0:32:33) Al: I know have my necrosimas and my cutums fused and I can never unfuse them because I would never be able to fuse them again right like it’s just that’s it if you chose the wrong one tough and it’s really annoying because one of them I did choose the wrong one and but there’s nothing I can do about that I’m stuffed and that’s just what I have to live with. (0:32:40) Kev: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. (0:32:46) Kev: Oh, no! (0:32:50) Kev: Ugh. (0:32:52) Kev: Oh, that’s rough. That’s rough, buddy. (0:32:53) Al: Still. Yeah, that is life but yeah so there’s actions Amazon to was done much better and I got shiny. (0:33:03) Al: And I got my energy and I’ve I’ve powered them up so nice powerful Pokemon looking looking great my shiny shield was it shield form kind of what it’s called and they have new adventure effects so. (0:33:04) Kev: Yeah! (0:33:10) Kev: Yeah, that’s the game! (0:33:18) Kev: That’s cool, that’s good. (0:33:19) Al: There we go. (0:33:22) Al: And they can also be used because they’re when they’re in that form they can be used at power spots, which normally only dynamics Pokemon can be used a pair of spots, but of course you can’t you can’t. (0:33:33) Al: And they can also be used in Dynamax session and Amazon to but when they’re in that form you can use them a pair of spots so that’s fun. (0:33:44) Al: So yeah, I probably do a little bit tomorrow as well because it was Amazon to things action tomorrow, but which is a bit annoying, but if you got the ticket for go fest you do get enough energy to do one of one of the dogs, so I do have enough to do as action, but I probably want to get enough to do another one. (0:34:02) Kev: Sure. Well, I am glad that you’re enjoying it. (0:34:03) Al: Continuing to enjoy Pokemon go despite everything. (0:34:07) Kev: I don’t… (0:34:11) Kev: This, well, that’s kind of, uh, I mean, that’s just a blanket save these days. (0:34:20) Al: They keep trying to ruin the game, but I still somehow enjoy it. (0:34:24) Al: All right, let’s talk about some game use a woo. (0:34:31) Kev: Oh, wait, wait, back up. (0:34:32) Kev: I’m sorry, I just– (0:34:33) Kev: I don’t know why you just clicked something in my mind. (0:34:34) Kev: I forgot. (0:34:35) Kev: I want to follow up my Magic the Gathering thing. (0:34:39) Kev: So as I look, you know, I was dipping my toe in the MTG pool. (0:34:44) Kev: Guess what’s the next secret layer? (0:34:45) Al: I don’t know. (0:34:46) Kev: You know me. (0:34:48) Al: Ah, ah, ah, pressure, um, unicorn over the light! (0:34:53) Kev: Haha, oh, oh, that’d be so (0:34:54) Al: No, ah, no, um, let’s see, so Kevin, something Kevin would like. (0:34:59) Al: Well, it’s not going to be like anything Nintendo. (0:35:02) Kev: No, no it’s just very funny hearing that. (0:35:04) Al: Wait, is it? (0:35:06) Al: No. (0:35:08) Kev: I didn’t intend, I didn’t intend, life log Nintendo Pass. (0:35:09) Al: Well. (0:35:12) Kev: You don’t like Nintendo things, um, but it won’t, uh, MTG, I gotta say, it wouldn’t be (0:35:15) Al: I mean, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, that’s the opposite of what I thought, Kevin. (0:35:19) Kev: in there. (0:35:20) Kev: Yeah, okay. (0:35:21) Kev: Yeah, okay, yes, yeah, I know what you’re saying, but the way it came in my ears, it’s (0:35:21) Al: What I thought was, oh yeah, it could be, you know, you like Nintendo stuff. (0:35:25) Al: And I was like, oh no, but they’re not going to do something with Nintendo. (0:35:27) Al: That was my point. (0:35:30) Kev: It’s not too funny. (0:35:31) Al: Trying to accuse me. (0:35:32) Al: Accuse me of not thinking you like Nintendo stuff. (0:35:34) Al: Ah, no, I’ve not got anything. (0:35:39) Al: Nothing’s coming. (0:35:40) Kev: Ow! The lowest hanging fruit! Gotta go fast! (0:35:44) Al: Oh, Sonic. (0:35:45) Al: What? They’re doing Sonic, Magic the Gathering? (0:35:47) Kev: They’re doing- okay. (0:35:49) Kev: Yeah! Dude, they already did SpongeBob! Who cares? (0:35:53) Al: What? This is what one out all these cards look so good. (0:35:54) Kev: Oh, you missed that! SpongeBob’s in magic! Oh, yeah! (0:36:02) Kev: Don’t they? (0:36:03) Al: Oh, no. Oh, no. (0:36:04) Kev: They look- that’s- that’s the exact reaction. (0:36:10) Al: I don’t want this. Well, no, I do want this. (0:36:14) Kev: And you- and- oh, my- like, Shadow- (0:36:15) Al: I managed to not even look at the Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings ones somehow. (0:36:18) Kev: Oh- oh, yeah. (0:36:20) Kev: Shadow looks busted. It’s insane. (0:36:24) Kev: They’re no big the cats, so point against them for that. No cream, either. (0:36:28) Kev: But overall, it’s- it’s in their- (0:36:31) Kev: Ugh, Sonic’s ability, ‘cause you know, when they have an ability, they have a little, like, name for it. (0:36:36) Kev: It- it’s literally “Gotta go fast.” (0:36:38) Kev: You know “Gotta go fast” isn’t even from the games. (0:36:40) Kev: It’s just from the, uh, the- the dub intro of an anime. [Laughter] (0:36:45) Al: Yeah, I’m not particularly surprised. (0:36:48) Kev: Oh, yeah, Sonic’s going to magic. (0:36:50) Kev: It’s- ugh. I don’t like it. I’m- I’m- I’m- oh, dear. I’m cooked, as the children would say. (0:36:58) Kev: You know, Unicorn Overlord, it- wild as it- it’s not in Magic the Gathering, but in- they have one of those- (0:37:04) Kev: What is it? I think it’s, like, the Overlord edition. You know, one of the big fancy collector’s editions. (0:37:08) Kev: There’s actually a whole (0:37:10) Kev: building card game inside that it’s wild (0:37:16) Kev: Yeah, card games are my vice. They’re my legal addiction. Sonic’s coming to magic (0:37:16) Al: And will this be coming and will this be coming to arenas? (0:37:28) Kev: uh good question I don’t know arena is very weird because arena has (0:37:39) Kev: arena is kind of its own environment it has exclusive arena cards it has its own formats (0:37:45) Kev: and i’ll tell you the the bad ones we’re getting a spider-man set in a few months (0:37:51) Kev: that the spider-man set cards are coming to arena but not with spider-man full (0:37:58) Kev: they’re going to replace them with whatever generic magic card characters or whatever (0:38:02) Al: What? What does that even mean then? (0:38:05) Kev: it means they didn’t get the license to use it digitally (0:38:07) Al: What would be the point in adding the cards then, if they’re not the cards? (0:38:11) Al: So they’re gonna have like the same effects, but not use any names for Spider-Man. (0:38:14) Kev: yeah yeah you you get yeah you get pied or arachnid avatar I don’t know (0:38:18) Al: That’s so stupid. (0:38:20) Al: Just don’t do it. (0:38:28) Kev: uh good old magic together I i joined just this year what a good time to get into this game (0:38:36) Al: Update, I have downloaded Magi the Gathering Eraser. (0:38:39) Kev: yeah oh we gotta play some games um all right let’s go to non sonic base oh or is there (0:38:44) Al: Yes, yeah, news, game news. No, no, no, no, there’s obviously not. Research story have (0:38:47) Kev: is there sonic base news maybe not yet one day it’s inevitable (0:38:56) Al: announced that their 1.0 is coming the 21st of July, so it has been a long time coming. (0:39:00) Kev: Okay (0:39:02) Al: Let’s see, when did this first come into Early Access? February 2023 was when this launched (0:39:04) Kev: Yes, oh wait research, so I don’t know I heard something else okay that that is exciting (0:39:11) Al: in early access. (0:39:12) Kev: Research work takes forever to ask Cody. That’s why the 1.0. It’s it’s forever (0:39:14) Al: So, maybe we need to get our second harvest on this after the 1.0 is out. (0:39:18) Kev: It’s the equivalent of getting their PhD congratulations research story (0:39:23) Kev: I’m sure Cody isn’t triggered by this at all (0:39:31) Kev: Okay, so wait we got let’s see what is the date on the oh July 21st there (0:39:38) Kev: It is but it’s available on the on a beta branch. That’s weird. What do you mean? (0:39:43) Kev: 1.0 will be available in beta before one point (0:39:45) Al: No, no, that’s so. So that’s before launch, you’ll be able to play the beta. (0:39:48) Kev: Yeah, I know that that’s very weird to me like (0:39:52) Al: Well, OK, I see what you mean. I see what you mean. I see what you mean. So (0:39:57) Al: it’s not actually that uncommon in software development where you go, this is our beta for (0:40:05) Al: 1.0 or 1.1 or whatever. That is not that uncommon, actually. I think it’s less common in games, (0:40:07) Kev: Sure. Yeah. Sure. And I mean, like, you know, public betas and test servers, (0:40:12) Al: But it’s definitely something that you see quite a lot. (0:40:18) Kev: like they’re common and I’m not saying it’s unheard of, but I don’t know. (0:40:21) Kev: It just feels weird, especially in game dev, like the 1.0 is the big fitting, right? (0:40:25) Kev: So, uh, I don’t know, but whatever, um, but hey. (0:40:28) Al: You still have to pop the game you can’t just play it’s not just anybody can play it like it’s public (0:40:33) Kev: Yeah. (0:40:34) Al: But public for people who have paid for the game, right? (0:40:37) Kev: That’s true. Good point. (0:40:40) Kev: All right. But hey, it’s here. (0:40:42) Al: Tiny garden the content the (0:40:45) Al: Featured game of last week’s episode have released a statement regarding the Nintendo switch version (0:40:52) Kev: I didn’t think I’d ever hear a statement from Tiny Garden. (0:40:56) Al: This is this is great. I’m just (0:40:58) Al: going to read some of the statement because I don’t think I can really (0:41:01) Al: summarize it better than they have done. “We wanted to clarify some questions (0:41:06) Al: that have arisen regarding the Nintendo Switch version of Tiny Garden. We have (0:41:09) Al: been vague and perhaps not communicated with you as well as we could have, for (0:41:14) Al: which we apologize. We did not want to cause you unnecessary concern or bore (0:41:18) Al: you with technical details. The truth is that the Switch version of Tiny Garden (0:41:23) Al: will be ported by an external company. As we are such a small team it was very (0:41:28) Al: hard for us to do everything in-house. The problem here is we’ve not yet found a (0:41:32) Al: company that can port the game with the polish and quality that we feel (0:41:35) Al: comfortable with. Both our publishers Super Rare Games and us want to deliver (0:41:40) Al: the best possible version of Tiny Garden on Switch. However, we did not (0:41:43) Al: anticipate that this porting would be so complicated.” Hey, I could have told you. (0:41:48) Al: We’ve seen this before. (0:41:50) Kev: What are you talking about? (0:41:52) Kev: It’s katrossi katronfi, it’s fuckies! (0:41:56) Al: And then they go into details about complaining. (0:41:58) Al: About their game engine and that’s the reason. (0:42:02) Al: Sure, fine. (0:42:05) Al: It’s funny because it’s like, oh no, we didn’t know it would be complicated to bring it to a (0:42:10) Al: console. Like what did you expect? Like these things are always complicated. (0:42:14) Kev: Well, yeah, I mean anything game dev is complicated pretty much anything dev software dev is always complicated (0:42:19) Al: Yeah, exactly. (0:42:21) Kev: Well, look here. Here’s your free advice tiny garden people call biting studio (0:42:27) Kev: Those are the guys who make cassette beasts that except beasts is on Godot. They brought it to switch (0:42:32) Kev: It’s awesome on switch. There you go (0:42:33) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that’s the thing. I suspect if you do it in Unity or Unreal, I suspect (0:42:42) Al: it is slightly easier because they are obviously like larger companies use them and so therefore (0:42:51) Kev: They’re established. (0:42:53) Al: need the console support to be as good as it can be, right? Because otherwise there (0:43:00) Al: There would be big problems because Godot is. (0:43:04) Al: open source and therefore more likely to be used by smaller teams, and they are less likely to be focusing on consoles at all more likely to be focusing on just PC because that is the easiest for. (0:43:18) Kev: Uh-huh (0:43:18) Al: I mean, it’s just the easiest to develop for full stop right because there’s no gatekeeper right like that has has been the case for a long, long time. (0:43:20) Kev: Yeah, I mean yes, yes, that’s correct (0:43:26) Kev: And probably will always be the case because just the nature of the beast so yeah (0:43:28) Al: Exactly. (0:43:29) Al: Exactly. (0:43:30) Al: Exactly. (0:43:31) Al: So there’s, they’re probably simplifying. (0:43:33) Al: Things in what they’re saying, you know, these things happen. (0:43:40) Al: I would like to clarify again, please, if you’re backing a game on Kickstarter, if you (0:43:47) Al: want it for console, don’t back it on Kickstarter, right? (0:43:50) Al: Like just, just like it’s the console is always like, it is when the Kickstarter happens normally, (0:43:59) Al: the way that it is happened is there is a working version of the game. (0:44:03) Al: It may not be final. (0:44:04) Al: It may not have all the content, but they have a game and it can run on PC. (0:44:08) Al: There will be nothing running on console at that point. (0:44:11) Al: And it’s very likely, unless they are a team that have ported to console before, it’s very (0:44:16) Al: likely that they have no idea what they’re doing with consoles at all, right? (0:44:20) Kev: Yep. (0:44:21) Al: And this, this isn’t meant to be harsh on them. (0:44:24) Al: This is just a fact that if you have, if you’re not a console developer, you do not know how (0:44:29) Al: complicated it is. (0:44:30) Al: I am not a games developer, right? (0:44:33) Al: I’m a web developer. (0:44:34) Al: And even in web development, there are things that if you don’t know how it works, it is (0:44:38) Al: so much more complicated than you realize. (0:44:42) Al: And there are just certain things that are more awkward. (0:44:45) Al: And if you haven’t started development on it, you don’t know how complicated it is. (0:44:49) Al: And it is likely not going to be done until the game is finished. (0:44:52) Al: That’s the other thing, right? (0:44:55) Al: Even Stardew Valley still doesn’t get updates out day and date on console, right? (0:45:00) Kev: Yeah. (0:45:01) Al: and stardew valley (0:45:03) Al: is one of the biggest indie games, full stop. (0:45:06) Kev: Yeah. (0:45:07) Al: It’s not like he’s only on his own anyway. He has a team that he works with, he worked with (0:45:12) Kev: Nice. (0:45:12) Al: porting companies before, he has done many different things, and even he can’t do it. (0:45:20) Al: It takes so much work, even big companies struggle with that. (0:45:26) Al: It is rare for a game to come out at the same time on PC and console unless you are one of (0:45:31) Al: of the biggest games and they will. (0:45:34) Al: Completely different teams working on the PC version, working on the switch version, working on the PlayStation version Xbox is different because they’re like the Microsoft of well, pretty much Microsoft have done so much work and I, you know, I’m the first to jump on Microsoft a bad bandwagon, but Microsoft have done so much work to make putting games to Xbox so incredibly easy it’s not. It’s still not just as simple as click a button. It does. (0:45:36) Kev: Mm-hmm (0:45:41) Kev: Yeah (0:45:44) Kev: They are a PC (0:46:03) Al: It does it, but it is so much easier than any other console. If you have an existing PC game, especially if you’re using the tools that Microsoft give to make the game on PC. (0:46:07) Kev: Sure. Yeah. Well, I mean, guess. Hi. Hey, I’m still holding out for mighty number nine (0:46:15) Al: All that being said, all that being said, never back a Kickstarter for a switch game. Just don’t do it, right? (0:46:25) Kev: on the 3DS. Uh, but. (0:46:31) Al: I have, I have, when I, when I bought my steam. (0:46:33) Al: Dick, it was so good because it meant that I could go through and like change (0:46:37) Al: all of my kickstarters to use to steam codes instead of switch get codes. (0:46:41) Kev: Mmm, yeah, at least (0:46:41) Al: And you get the game a year before, right? (0:46:44) Al: It’s just every, every, every single one is there’s none of them. (0:46:49) Al: Not a single game that I have backed on Kickstarter has released (0:46:53) Al: on switch at the same time as steam. (0:46:54) Kev: year you’re not wrong not at all ah well you know what though in this (0:47:03) Kev: particular case there’s an easy way to fix this you know what you don’t even (0:47:07) Kev: have to release on the switch tiny garden just so you know what we’re (0:47:11) Kev: canceling it we’re investing everything into the playdate port and we’re all in (0:47:12) Al: Honestly, a Playdate port would probably be quicker, because it would have to lose features, (0:47:17) Kev: we’re good all is forgiven (0:47:24) Al: right? It’s not going to be the same, the graphics are simpler, like honestly, if they started now (0:47:31) Al: from scratch, they could probably get a Playdate version out before they could port their version (0:47:34) Kev: Well, well there you go, Tiny Guard. The path is there. (0:47:34) Al: to Switch. I’m not joking. They would of course get a fraction of the sales, right? There are (0:47:42) Al: Playdates. Yes, it does. I love the Playdate, it’s so good. I just wish I played it more. (0:47:44) Kev: the dozens look I mean I might join the dozens I’ll say that (0:48:00) Kev: Yeah (0:48:05) Al: As far as I can see, the only number I’ve seen on Playdate sales was in May of last year, (0:48:10) Al: They said 70,000 have been sold (0:48:12) Al: But that was one year into it, and we’re now a year later, so who knows

(0:00:36) Al: My name is Al. (0:00:38) Codey: and I am Cody. (0:00:40) Al: And we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore Games. (0:00:44) Codey: Woo. (0:00:45) Codey: Whoooo! (0:00:46) Al: This episode, we have a very exciting thing. (0:00:49) Al: It’s not often we get an interview, but the first interview of the year this year (0:00:53) Al: is with the developer of 2024’s The Harvest Season game of the year. (0:01:01) Al: Rusty Retirement, Jordan, the developer of Rusty Retirement, (0:01:05) Al: will be joining us later in the episode to talk about the game and many other things. (0:01:12) Codey: Yeah, we talk, we kind of talk about a couple things. (0:01:12) Al: So we talk about stuff, it is, it is mentioned, and some super exciting secret stuff. (0:01:16) Codey: The game is mentioned though. (0:01:18) Codey: Yeah, it is talked about, which will be revealed in this episode. (0:01:27) Al: Yeah. (0:01:31) Al: So if you’re here just to listen to that, you can see the time in the show notes, (0:01:35) Al: or you can click on the chapter in your podcast episode. (0:01:38) Al: But please do stay around as we talk about the news for this week. (0:01:43) Al: And also, Cody, what have you been up to? (0:01:46) Codey: I have been playing Slay the Spire. (0:01:52) Codey: I haven’t been playing it nearly as much, (0:01:54) Codey: but I did finally beat all of the characters (0:02:00) Codey: and beat like the end game once you– (0:02:04) Codey: and like got credits. (0:02:06) Codey: But it doesn’t really ever end, really. (0:02:08) Codey: You just keep playing. (0:02:10) Codey: But it’s fun. (0:02:12) Codey: doing that, doing more PhD studies. (0:02:16) Codey: It’s like starting to hit me now that like, cause I was talking to my advisor (0:02:20) Codey: and he was like, yeah, so if you’re going to defend in or graduate in December, (0:02:24) Codey: you have to defend in October, which means you should have your data done by (0:02:28) Codey: July. And like, I was just like, Oh, oh gosh, it’s all coming up so fast. (0:02:35) Codey: So yeah, it’s starting to hit. (0:02:38) Codey: Um, and also clearly Rusty’s retirement played a hot minute of that by you. (0:02:38) Al: Fair enough, obviously. (0:02:44) Al: Nice. I think last episode I talked about playing Legends Arceus for the second time, (0:02:51) Al: gone through and caught most of the Pokémon, I was nearly done. I have now finished that, (0:02:56) Al: so that’s that’s done. I’ve got my full Pokémon home decks, got the crown on Pokémon home for (0:03:03) Al: for that. And then I decided to do go from (0:03:08) Al: the best Pokemon game to the worst Pokemon game. And I am now playing Brilliant Diamond (0:03:13) Al: and Shining Pearl again. So it hasn’t, I already, I had a save. I had done a Professor Oak challenge. (0:03:24) Al: So I still had that. However, I didn’t finish, I didn’t keep everything. So there was a bunch (0:03:30) Al: of Pokemon I need to catch and breed and stuff, but it wasn’t too hard, except I am now, I (0:03:36) Al: I now need– (0:03:38) Al: Well, two Pokémon lines, one of which is just a version exclusive, (0:03:44) Al: so I’ve been playing through the other game, Pearl, to get that one. (0:03:47) Al: And I’ve almost got it. I’m almost there. (0:03:49) Al: The other one I need is Palkia, so I do need to finish Pearl till the end. (0:03:54) Al: So I do need to play through that game all the way to the end (0:03:58) Al: and get Palkia and be finished with that. (0:04:00) Codey: I’m sorry. That sounds awful (0:04:03) Al: I do– I feel like I don’t know. (0:04:05) Al: I didn’t, I don’t feel like I hate. (0:04:08) Al: the games when I was playing them, but maybe that rose tinted glasses. (0:04:11) Al: Maybe I did when I was playing it, but they are not great. (0:04:13) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:04:19) Al: I do not miss random encounters in the grass. (0:04:23) Al: I mean, that in and of itself, like I don’t, I don’t want that to ever come back. (0:04:28) Al: I know some people like it. (0:04:29) Al: Whatever. (0:04:29) Al: I don’t, please don’t, please don’t bring it back, please. (0:04:35) Al: and obviously just the thing that annoys me. (0:04:38) Al: most about Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the stickiness. Like if you walk next to a wall (0:04:48) Al: you slow down. I just hate that so much because it’s like especially if you’re going through a (0:04:53) Al: cave and it’s like you happen to brush against a rock and suddenly you’re going at snail space. (0:04:59) Al: It’s just I really hate it. I do hate it so much and I feel like those games could have been a lot (0:05:05) Al: a lot better if there’s just been like a few decisions made. (0:05:08) Al: I could have dealt with the fact that it was random encounters in the grass right, (0:05:12) Al: like I would have preferred if they’d done something like Let’s Go right like I think (0:05:12) Codey: Yeah. (0:05:16) Al: Let’s Go is one of my favorite games. So if they’d done something like that I would have (0:05:21) Al: been much preferred it but I can understand why they would want to do like let’s keep let’s bring (0:05:26) Al: back the random encounters because that’s what these games were fine but it’s just all the other (0:05:32) Al: decisions that were made. Yeah, not fun. So (0:05:34) Codey: Yeah, I think that was like why I didn’t get them because if I wanted to play Diamond or Pearl, I would play it first like they didn’t change enough to me to make it worth it. (0:05:46) Al: Yeah, are we past the point now where you can just remake a game? Like, red and blue, (0:06:00) Al: when they were remade into Fire Red and Leaf Cream, I think that needed to happen, right? (0:06:05) Al: To make those games fun. Because those games were so, like, they were obviously really (0:06:10) Al: complicated and difficult for what they were at the time, and they were running on like (0:06:14) Al: of shoes. (0:06:16) Al: The company nearly folded multiple times before they got those games out. (0:06:20) Al: And so I think it makes absolute sense to redo those. (0:06:23) Al: I think HeartGold and SoulSilver, whether you like those games or not, I think did a (0:06:28) Al: lot to those games and made them better in a lot of ways. (0:06:33) Al: I personally really like what they did with Oras. (0:06:36) Al: I liked how they did that in the 3D style. (0:06:43) Al: And then let’s score, I think is. (0:06:46) Al: One of their best, I think it’s their best remake full stop. (0:06:48) Al: I think it’s amazing what they did with it. (0:06:50) Al: They took what was the original games and made it different. (0:06:54) Al: I really like that. (0:06:57) Al: And even if they’d done Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as Platinum, (0:07:01) Al: I still feel like people would have been like, “But why?” (0:07:04) Al: Right? Because you can use it. (0:07:05) Al: Like a DS is not, DS games don’t feel old, like Game Boy games feel old. (0:07:12) Al: And yeah, some people would prefer to play a Game Boy game (0:07:16) Al: and remake of a Game Boy game. (0:07:17) Al: But a lot of people wouldn’t. (0:07:18) Al: A lot of people would prefer to play a newer game. (0:07:20) Al: But I feel like if you’re looking for a 2D Pokémon game, (0:07:24) Al: go play a 2D Pokémon game. (0:07:26) Al: I don’t think just remaking them as what they are makes sense anymore. (0:07:30) Codey: Yeah, I agree. I don’t think that that’s exciting enough to merit people dropping down another $60 or $50 or however much these games cost nowadays. (0:07:44) Al: or 120, if you buy them both, which obviously I would never do. You’d never find me doing that. (0:07:46) Codey: Yeah. No, of course not. No. Yeah, so I don’t… I think that it does a disservice to them to… (0:08:00) Codey: Not try and improve the games with the quality of life features that the fandom clearly needs or at the minimum, like have them be like a setting you can toggle or something. (0:08:14) Codey: So if people want to play the game on hard mode, they can. (0:08:18) Codey: Yeah. (0:08:18) Al: Let’s not get into the debate of hard mode. (0:08:22) Al: Yeah, I think, yeah, I just, it’s not even like Brilliant Diamond and Chime Pearl brought (0:08:30) Al: it up to the best or the most modern 2D games, right? (0:08:34) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:08:34) Al: Like the graphics were better, right? (0:08:37) Al: In my opinion, I know a lot of people didn’t like how it looked, but that’s fine. (0:08:40) Al: If you don’t like how it looked, that’s fine, but it is like more modern looking. (0:08:44) Al: It’s cleaner graphics, et cetera, et cetera, right? (0:08:48) Al: No, it’s not, it didn’t have as many quality of life improvements as even Gen 5 did, one (0:08:54) Codey: Mm hmm. Yeah. (0:08:55) Al: generation later, right? (0:08:58) Al: And so what are you doing if you’re not even going to improve it in that way, right? (0:09:04) Al: And that’s ignoring the stuff that they ignored that they had improved in Platinum. (0:09:09) Al: A Gen 4 game that came out two years later, right? (0:09:14) Al: Like if you’re going to ignore all of those improvements that you have made over the years (0:09:19) Al: don’t bother, but anyway, so yeah, I think I enjoyed the Professor Oak challenge because (0:09:20) Codey: Yeah (0:09:23) Codey: Hard agree (0:09:27) Al: it was very different compared to other ones, like having the grand underground, I think, (0:09:33) Al: was made that more interesting, but anyway, most people don’t care about that sort of (0:09:40) Al: stuff. (0:09:41) Al: So yeah, I’ve been playing through that and I’ll get there eventually. (0:09:44) Al: I’ve taken a break today to do some shiny hunting in Scarlet and Violet. (0:09:48) Al: But once I’ve done this, once I’ve caught Palkia, (0:09:52) Al: the only ones I’ll have left to do are, I don’t have a, (0:09:57) Al: because I’ve been for listeners who are, for new listeners or people who aren’t aware, (0:10:01) Al: I lost almost all of my Pokemon saves two years ago on my Switch. (0:10:05) Al: And I’ve recreated most of them now. (0:10:07) Al: So I have the only one, the only one I say I didn’t lose was my sword, (0:10:14) Al: Pokemon sword, because that was on a different Switch. (0:10:16) Al: because I was running two games at the same time. (0:10:18) Al: And I didn’t really like having to close a game and reopen it. (0:10:22) Al: So I just had two switches running the two games. (0:10:25) Al: So because of that, I managed to keep my sword. (0:10:29) Al: But other than that, I lost everything else. (0:10:31) Al: So all I’ve got left I don’t have is Let’s Go Pikachu and Shield. (0:10:39) Al: I think I have everything else because I’ve got Scarlet and Violet. (0:10:41) Al: I’ve got Legends Arceus. (0:10:44) Al: I’ve got Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl now. (0:10:47) Al: and I’ve got Let’s Go Eevee. (0:10:48) Al: And I’ve obviously got my original sword. (0:10:50) Al: So I think I’ve just got Let’s Go Pikachu to do and sword. (0:10:55) Al: And I will probably, I think I’ll probably do with Let’s Go Pikachu (0:10:58) Al: like I’m doing with Palkia and I’ll just kind of like rush through it (0:11:01) Al: and get it finished and then do the last couple of Pokémon (0:11:03) Al: that I need for the crown on Pokémon Home for those games. (0:11:06) Al: And then I think I will probably at some point, (0:11:11) Al: certainly not before the next Pokémon games that comes out, (0:11:14) Al: maybe at the end of the year or something, (0:11:17) Al: I will probably (0:11:18) Al: do a Professor Oak Challenge in Shield and get that done that way and finish up that (0:11:24) Al: dicks like that. Because that’s the only set of games on the Switch that I haven’t done (0:11:33) Al: a Professor Oak Challenge in because I started it for brilliant time in Shining Pearl. What a game (0:11:40) Al: to start that on. And then I went back and did Let’s Go Pikachu, but I didn’t go back and do (0:11:49) Al: Shield. No, I didn’t go back and do Pikachu because I already had a Pikachu save, (0:11:54) Al: but then I’d lost it, so I did Eevee. Anyway, doesn’t matter. Point is, I suspect by the middle (0:12:03) Al: of February, I will only have one Pokémon game not finished and that’ll be Shield and (0:12:12) Al: that’ll be the only Pokédex I don’t have finished on home as well. But I’ll get to that eventually. (0:12:16) Al: There’s no rush. (0:12:17) Codey: So, so I have a question. (0:12:19) Al: Yes, go for it. Yes, my secret is I don’t work. (0:12:20) Codey: Do you sleep? (0:12:23) Codey: I don’t believe you. (0:12:27) Codey: Oh, that worked. (0:12:28) Codey: That’s, that’s fair. (0:12:30) Al: Or if you are my employer, please don’t listen to this. The secret is that obviously the ADHD (0:12:35) Codey: Yeah. (0:12:38) Al: allows me to do like a week’s worth in like a day. And then I spend the rest of the time feeling (0:12:41) Codey: Yep. (0:12:43) Al: guilty that I’m not doing anything because my brain can’t, but it then distracts me. (0:12:45) Codey: Yep. (0:12:47) Codey: Yep, that’s where I am, too. (0:12:52) Codey: But that is part of working with neurodivergence. (0:12:59) Codey: So yeah, that’s actually, I’m doing a conference in November, and (0:12:59) Al: Yeah, weeeeeeee. (0:13:04) Codey: I’m going to try and have a symposium in that conference for, (0:13:08) Codey: it’s an entomology conference. (0:13:10) Codey: I want a symposium specifically on neurodivergence and why, and (0:13:14) Codey: and how to accommodate for… (0:13:17) Codey: people that work in your in your area or group or whatever university (0:13:22) Codey: accommodate for students and faculty that have neurodivergences versus like (0:13:27) Codey: just trying to make them conform because that is very left hand of left hand right (0:13:35) Codey: hand of people so that’s what we’ve been up to oh my gosh he doesn’t sleep you (0:13:38) Al: Oh, oh, wait, no, I’m not finished yet. (0:13:43) Al: I’ve been playing Harvest Moon Home Sweet Home. (0:13:45) Codey: guys I don’t believe it (0:13:47) Al: I’ve not been doing this very much, (0:13:49) Al: because I’ve just been doing like a day or two every day, (0:13:54) Al: which only takes like five or 10 minutes. (0:13:56) Al: But I’m trying to play these games like some people play (0:13:58) Al: them and just playing a little bit every day. (0:14:00) Al: And it’s been so much better with the controller support. (0:14:02) Al: I can actually play it now. (0:14:04) Codey: But can you save it the right way? (0:14:06) Codey: Bye. (0:14:08) Al: It doesn’t seem to work properly in so much as it saves fine, (0:14:12) Al: and it seems to be saving fine. (0:14:14) Al: And it seems like it loads when I go on. (0:14:16) Al: So I’m using it on my iPad, and I play it on my iPad, (0:14:19) Al: and it all seems to work. (0:14:20) Al: And I close the app, and I open up, and it all works fine. (0:14:22) Al: And then I go on to my Mac, and I open it up, and it says, (0:14:25) Al: oh, you’ve got new data. (0:14:26) Al: Do you want to download this? (0:14:27) Al: You go, yes, I’ll take the new data. (0:14:29) Al: And it shows the right thing on there. (0:14:31) Al: It says I’m at spring 23, year one, (0:14:34) Al: and I’ve got this much money, blah, blah, blah. (0:14:36) Al: And then you click on it, and then you actually (0:14:38) Al: get the game, and you’re back on spring one, (0:14:41) Al: and you have nothing. (0:14:42) Al: And the best thing about it is the save (0:14:44) Al: is completely mucked up in so much as there are no people. (0:14:46) Codey: Mm hmm. That sounds lovely, actually. (0:14:48) Al: People don’t exist in the game. (0:14:50) Al: There are no NPCs, and there’s nothing you can do. (0:14:53) Al: You just walk around and do nothing. (0:14:56) Al: It’s– it’s an autistic paradise. (0:15:02) Codey: That’s my kind of farming. (0:15:05) Al: Um. (0:15:06) Codey: Just give me give me all the tasks to do without the social interaction. (0:15:14) Al: So yeah, I can still only play on my iPad, (0:15:17) Al: which I do want the cloud save, (0:15:19) Al: and that would probably, (0:15:20) Al: I’d probably play it more if I had the cloud save, (0:15:22) Al: but the controller support means (0:15:24) Al: that I’m actually playing it. (0:15:26) Al: So, yeah. (0:15:29) Al: So that’s why I’ve been up to, (0:15:30) Al: I’ve also been thinking about the Switch 2. (0:15:32) Al: I don’t know if you’ve been thinking (0:15:33) Al: about the Switch 2 at all. (0:15:34) Codey: Nope. I don’t play my Switch that often, like at all. I know that I am going to play it. (0:15:35) Al: No, that’s fine. (0:15:37) Al: I’m excited for the Switch too. (0:15:38) Al: Hmm. (0:15:44) Codey: I’m going to play the Zelda games eventually, right? And then I enjoy having it for if I (0:15:50) Codey: want to play anything, but Xbox Game Pass has all I really need right now. And no, no, (0:15:57) Al: did you get did you get us a steam decadent Oh sad come on Jeff by the (0:16:03) Codey: I did not. (0:16:04) Codey: I am unloved no we yeah he was like still deciding if he wanted to do it or not he (0:16:13) Codey: actually did just get a raise so yeah maybe I’ll like walk by his phone and do that whole (0:16:16) Al: There you go. Perfect. (0:16:22) Codey: like steam deck like whisper into his phone so that his algorithm will start picking up (0:16:27) Codey: like ads first yeah. (0:16:28) Al: or we can get your is is it your neighbor Micah is it Micah can go in when Jeff moves (0:16:34) Al: in and get Micah to go and talk to him hint are you listening Micah you can we can we (0:16:35) Codey: Uh-huh does Micah have one I can’t remember I don’t know but yeah no my neighbor I’m wondering (0:16:46) Al: confusing Micah’s again I have no idea I don’t think that’s relevant to whether or not he (0:16:50) Codey: if he has a steam deck yeah oh true true true true yeah Micah when we have like a Jeff moved (0:16:55) Al: can convince Jeff to buy U.S.D. (0:17:03) Codey: and party. (0:17:04) Al: Yeah. Yeah, I heard it. I heard it on the podcast. (0:17:04) Codey: Um, you should be like, man, Cody really like was excited about (0:17:08) Codey: possibly because Jeff doesn’t, because Jeff does not listen to this. (0:17:15) Al: I guessed, I guessed. (0:17:18) Codey: Yeah, for sure. (0:17:19) Al: All right. Well, I’m excited about the switch too. And I’m sure we’ll have lots to talk about it in (0:17:23) Al: the future, even though they’ve not really said anything yet. But all right, should we talk about (0:17:28) Al: the news? First up, we have Rune Factory Guardian. (0:17:29) Codey: Sure. (0:17:34) Al: So, first of all, they’ve announced that it’s coming out on the 30th of May. (0:17:39) Codey: Woo. (0:17:40) Codey: Something. (0:17:44) Al: So, there we go. That’s the thing. They’ve given a bunch of information on the new features. (0:17:52) Al: So, it has a village building thing, which is, I think, quite cool. In the trailer, (0:17:58) Al: you see them placing buildings and stuff and that. (0:18:04) Al: That’s cool. I quite like that idea because I get all the previous Rune Factory games have been like, (0:18:09) Al: “Here is an existing village. Go and interact with it.” Whereas this seems to be like you’re (0:18:14) Al: building up a village from small as you do the rest of things as well, which is a fun addition. (0:18:20) Codey: Yeah, I got the vibe that you’re like going through an area that has been like devastated and you’re helping to like rebuild (0:18:28) Al: Yeah, but that’s cool. Because if the whole point of Rune Factory is, it’s what if farming (0:18:38) Al: game plus adventure, I feel like adding in Village Building to that is a good logical (0:18:45) Al: continuation of that. (0:18:46) Codey: Yeah, going elsewhere, spreading your farming knowledge to the masses. (0:18:52) Al: The rest of it seems pretty similar to previous Rune Factory games, your combat and stuff (0:18:59) Al: like that. (0:19:00) Al: There maybe seem to be a bit more in terms of what’s the word I’m looking for, the movement. (0:19:06) Al: You seem to be able to glide on wind and stuff like that that I haven’t experienced in the (0:19:12) Al: previous games, which is a fun addition, making it more Breath of the Wildy, I guess. (0:19:19) Al: And there’s also 16 romanceables in this game. (0:19:22) Al: Get your waifu or husbandu. (0:19:25) Codey: Has a bundle I think it’s Joe (0:19:31) Codey: Yeah, never played a room factory game so I don’t have much (0:19:34) Al: Probably never going to. (0:19:37) Codey: Probs not (0:19:40) Codey: But I mean it looks the village building aspect I really do like like the idea of (0:19:47) Codey: going through an area and like helping to rebuild and restore peace and (0:19:52) Codey: maybe like you can set up farms and then you (0:19:55) Codey: find someone who can farm it and then you (0:19:57) Codey: move on. So it’s like you are creating the (0:19:59) Codey: farms and that kind of stuff and creating the (0:20:03) Codey: little societies. But then you get to disappear (0:20:06) Codey: into the ether. (0:20:07) Al: Is this going to be a, this is going to be the third run factor in a row where I go, (0:20:10) Al: “Ooh, I could, I could, maybe I’ll like this.” (0:20:13) Al: And then I play it and go, “Eh, it’s not really for me.” (0:20:16) Codey: Okay, maybe maybe the village maybe the village thing will be not will will make it change, (0:20:16) Al: Isn’t it? (0:20:17) Al: It’s going to, it’s going to happen again, isn’t it? (0:20:20) Al: Cause I’m getting that feeling. (0:20:27) Codey: maybe you will enjoy. We’re going to be optimistic here, because you’re going to have to play it. So (0:20:28) Al: Yeah, no one’s making me. (0:20:38) Codey: I am promising at this because I make the promises in this hostel. (0:20:46) Codey: Yeah, if you you can only marry. Yeah. (0:20:48) Al: What I didn’t notice is there didn’t seem to be anything about whether the romanceables (0:20:56) Al: are segregated. Oh dear. You know what I mean? Whether you can romance anyone or not. It (0:21:06) Al: does look like… I’m not seeing anything… I can’t remember five, but before five it (0:21:09) Codey: What has it been in all the previous games? (0:21:15) Al: It was definitely only… (0:21:18) Al: opposite gender. But I can’t remember what five did. However, obviously, that was also an issue (0:21:24) Al: for Story of Seasons and is no longer an issue for Story of Seasons and it’s the same company. (0:21:29) Al: So I would hope that now it will allow you to romance any character, but who knows? We’ll see. (0:21:39) Codey: We live in a society. (0:21:41) Codey: Thank you. (0:21:45) Al: It is $60. (0:21:48) Al: euros or 42 pounds. (0:21:50) Al: That is pretty cheap here. (0:21:52) Codey: What why why did you guys like pay a premium to like your government paid a (0:21:53) Al: I don’t know why it’s cheaper here than not though, I don’t know. (0:22:02) Codey: premium so they could get it for cheaper. (0:22:05) Al: The limited edition is $100 or 66 pounds and 66 pence. (0:22:10) Al: What a weird… (0:22:11) Codey: What the heck? (0:22:11) Al: Why is this such a weird number? (0:22:15) Al: it’s interesting. So the standard way. (0:22:18) Al: One. So this is for switch physical is (0:22:18) Codey: Uh huh. (0:22:21) Al: fifty nine ninety nine dollars forty one sixty six pounds or forty nine ninety nine euros. (0:22:27) Al: Right. So I would think maybe it was just (0:22:29) Al: auto-converted if it weren’t for the fact that the euros was a sensible one as well. (0:22:33) Al: So that’s weird. (0:22:34) Al: But then you go on to the limited edition one, which is nine ninety nine ninety nine (0:22:40) Al: dollars sixty six sixty six pounds or eighty three thirty two euros. (0:22:43) Codey: I mean, is it, do you guys have like a tax or something like a tariff on them that that (0:22:48) Al: What is with these numbers? (0:22:51) Al: So confused. (0:22:56) Al: Yeah, but. (0:22:58) Codey: would counteract? (0:23:00) Al: I mean, not if if so, it would be the case on every game, right? (0:23:06) Codey: Well, but maybe they’re like doing you a solid, like this company is like, we know, we know that (0:23:09) Al: Well, not rounding up. (0:23:11) Codey: you have to pay out your nose for shipping. So we’re just going to make the cost cheaper. (0:23:20) Codey: Yeah, I don’t know. I’m just trying to grasp the straws because that’s a little bizarre. (0:23:20) Al: if amazon has the the limited edition for 80 and the standard for 45 which I think was (0:23:24) Codey: Seems like a typo. (0:23:35) Al: the limited edition was more expensive yeah that was like 20 quid more for the limited edition (0:23:35) Codey: the euro prices. (0:23:41) Al: and three pounds more for the oh it’s very confusing what is happening here (0:23:46) Codey: There’s no logic in this place. (0:23:49) Al: I think these must. (0:23:50) Al: be auto translated like auto thing made because I can’t even find I can’t even find (0:23:59) Al: that number anywhere on any shop so I’m just going to ignore it I’m in all right anyway (0:24:03) Codey: Are they trying to say that this is the devil’s game? (0:24:11) Al: there’s that you can go pre-order it now if you want to go go go buy the game if you want (0:24:15) Al: it or if you’re me um next we have harvest hills uh have announced (0:24:15) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:24:20) Al: they’re out now uh I don’t think we got previous notice of this coming out on this date because (0:24:26) Al: I didn’t have it down as that so they’ve just it’s out shadow drop they go (0:24:30) Codey: Yep, that’s the way to do it (0:24:33) Al: um trying to decide if I wanted to play this game or not uh it looks nice it’s nice graphics (0:24:41) Al: but oh no they did announce their release date I just missed it they released it on Christmas eve (0:24:47) Al: I don’t think this had an early access, so this is just… (0:24:52) Codey: Yeah, no, this one was one that I was interested in because of the beehives looking actually like beehives. (0:24:58) Al: Oh yes, oh yes. Oh, it’s cheap. Five quid, that’s wild. Okay, okay. (0:25:00) Codey: And I’m really, yeah, it’s only like $5. (0:25:07) Codey: Okay, the final the final question, can it be played on Mac? Nope. Sorry, y’all. (0:25:12) Al: Oh, but it can on Steam Deck. I’d say it’s unknown compatibility on Steam Deck, but (0:25:17) Codey: Well, I (0:25:20) Al: I suspect it’ll be fine on Steam Deck, because it has controller support. (0:25:22) Codey: It does look really cute, cool. (0:25:24) Al: Interesting. Okay. Yeah. So if you want that game, go play it. Mika. (0:25:28) Al: Which is mountain have announced that their non early access release is coming on the 22nd (0:25:35) Al: of January. What I’m a little bit confused by is that they’ve said that the third update is coming (0:25:44) Al: in the coming weeks. So this seems to be leaving early access without an update. (0:25:50) Al: Like they’re just going, Oh, it’s not early access anymore. But this is this is they’ve been weird (0:25:56) Al: about this since the beginning, right? Because I… (0:25:58) Al: Still don’t understand why they ever put this out in Early Access, (0:26:01) Al: because it wasn’t Early Access. They just added extra content after the fact. (0:26:04) Al: And now they’re releasing their non-Early Access version before the final update. (0:26:10) Codey: I mean, that seems pretty par for the course, given that Coral Island did a lot of the same stuff. (0:26:11) Al: Weird. Weird. What are they doing over there? (0:26:19) Al: - Well, yeah, I mean, I feel like “Mika and the Witch’s Mountain” was more complete on (0:26:23) Codey: Yeah. (0:26:23) Al: its early access release than “Coral Island” was on its 1.0 release. I don’t know, weird, (0:26:28) Codey: Yeah, that’s fair. (0:26:33) Al: confused, whatever. Why they didn’t go, “Oh, this is now out of early access” with their (0:26:38) Al: second content update, because the third content update is extra stuff that they’d want to (0:26:44) Al: add but wasn’t originally promised and so why they didn’t go or the second up (0:26:49) Al: it is the non-early access release okay great fine done but they didn’t do that they’ve gone (0:26:55) Al: no this random date a few weeks before the final update that doesn’t have an actual update (0:27:02) Al: that is the non-early access version (0:27:04) Codey: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I don’t know is this this is the one where they’re gonna do they’re gonna add dungeons, right? (0:27:11) Al: yes correct (0:27:11) Codey: Yeah, cuz it says into the mount gone (0:27:14) Codey: uh (0:27:15) Al: Yeah, this is the time if you played the game before and you haven’t played. (0:27:19) Al: either of the content updates this will be the time to play it because I believe this is the (0:27:23) Al: final update and yeah it has a lot of extra content whereas the previous ones they were fun (0:27:30) Al: they do look fun but they were kind of small things it was like here’s a minigame here’s (0:27:35) Al: an extra collectible whereas this is yeah here are dungeons that you can go into much bigger. (0:27:40) Codey: Mm-hmm. Yeah, cool (0:27:42) Al: Galactic getaway they have announced that their early access comes out in March (0:27:48) Codey: Sorry, I just reread my comment and didn’t even realize it was a pun. (0:27:53) Al: Yeah (0:27:55) Al: You (0:27:57) Codey: So I wrote, how are they getting away with this? (0:28:01) Codey: And it’s galactic getaway. (0:28:04) Codey: So what I was referring to, I almost typed it out, but I wanted it to be like a secret. (0:28:09) Codey: When I look at this like Kickstarter picture that they have, the little robot is clearly (0:28:18) Codey: WALL-E with like a headset on and the dog looks kind of like Doug from up. (0:28:18) Al: Okay, bye. (0:28:27) Codey: And then the spaceship in the back left looks like Stitch’s spaceship from Leelo and Stitch. (0:28:34) Codey: So they’re just, the getaway part of this is that they’re getting away with not being (0:28:38) Codey: sued by Disney, I think. (0:28:38) Al: Right. Okay. So a couple of things. One, I don’t get the spaceship one. It doesn’t look (0:28:41) Codey: Okay. (0:28:44) Al: in it. Oh, no, I see. I know. I see. You mean that one. And I feel like I can see what you’re (0:28:51) Al: getting, what you’re coming, where you’re coming from, but they’re all pretty generic anyway, (0:28:56) Al: right? Like Eve is a pretty like generic looking robot. Doug is a dog, right? Like there’s only (0:29:01) Codey: Yeah, this is the we have Eve at home. (0:29:04) Codey: Uh-huh. (0:29:07) Al: so many dogs that the. (0:29:09) Al: And the spaceship is a red spaceship it it doesn’t even. (0:29:14) Codey: And the watering can has a star on it, like in, uh, I look at, I’m, the more I look someone (0:29:15) Al: Like it doesn’t even have the exact same design. (0:29:19) Al: Oh, come on. (0:29:22) Al: Come on. (0:29:28) Codey: in the background has buns like in, uh, Star Wars. No, I just, that like the, the picture. (0:29:34) Al: The robot is your biggest argument, I see why you’re saying that and I understand what you’re coming from, however, it’s a pretty generic looking robot shape, I think, personally. (0:29:51) Codey: But no, I, I just, I noticed that and I was like, Oh wow. (0:29:55) Codey: But yeah, I don’t know. (0:29:57) Codey: I’d like to see, uh, more stuff about this game. (0:30:00) Codey: I mean, they’ve, they’re going to add, they’re fixing the creatures, the (0:30:04) Codey: farming, the crafting, the mini games, um, and early access in March, 2025. (0:30:11) Codey: So, oh, woo. (0:30:15) Al: Usagi Shima have announced that they have a Chinese New Year update out now with one (0:30:21) Al: very important thing. Would you like to mention it? Yeah, you can give a costume to your bun (0:30:22) Codey: Uh, lion… lion dancing. (0:30:29) Al: to make it look like a… See, I thought these were dragons. I know it says lion, but I feel (0:30:33) Codey: No, they’re quick. Yeah. Have you ever seen lion dancing? Have you ever seen lion dancing? (0:30:35) Al: like it’s the Chinese New Year dragon, isn’t it? No, from a traditional saying. (0:30:43) Codey: I had um, I had a woman. Yeah, no, they’re lions. Um, there were a couple people in my high school (0:30:45) Al: Those are really, those are meant to be lions. I thought they were dragons. They don’t look (0:30:53) Al: anything like lions. (0:30:56) Codey: that uh were lion dancers and so they would do um in all the (0:31:03) Codey: like assemblies. They’d have a lion dancing part to the assembly. It was really cool. (0:31:10) Codey: Oh, that’s that was a big jump that I had to make. So you said this is a costume? (0:31:16) Al: So there’s a costume and there’s a minigame. You maybe have to do the minigame to get the costume, (0:31:21) Al: I’m not sure. Yeah, you jump over buns, some of which are in the costume. (0:31:22) Codey: Is the minigame the jumping? (0:31:29) Codey: Well, I just jumped over a plant and then lost to a mushroom, so. (0:31:33) Al: Oh, OK, so it’s more than buns that you jump over. Fair enough. (0:31:36) Codey: But that’s exciting. (0:31:39) Al: Yeah, if you love this game, it’s another update and with stuff for you to do. (0:31:40) Codey: I haven’t played this game in a while. (0:31:45) Codey: And it’s still cute. (0:31:47) Al: Yes, if you liked the game before, you’ll probably like this update. Let’s be honest. (0:31:50) Codey: you will continue the (0:31:52) Codey: liking shall continue. (0:31:54) Al: Yeah, for sure. (0:31:56) Al: Chill Town have announced their upcoming updates, 0.9 and 1.0. They’ve given some details on them. (0:32:04) Al: It’s mostly 0.9, like right at the end of the post to go, (0:32:10) Al: “Oh, and by the way, there will be festivals. That’s coming in 1.0.” (0:32:15) Codey: Yep, they talk about how they have sprinting, which I thought folks might like given that, (0:32:16) Al: But the rest of it seems to be 0.9. (0:32:28) Codey: you know, the issue was that you had to run across the map, right? That was something (0:32:32) Codey: folks were complaining about when they played it. So maybe being able to run faster will (0:32:37) Codey: alleviate some of that. But the more important thing is that they lied to me in that steam (0:32:45) Codey: that says that there’s a nature exhibit with it that you can fill with insects. But I saw no insects. (0:32:50) Codey: So that’s all they haven’t. But like, you can’t mention that without showing an insect or two, (0:32:51) Al: Maybe they’ve just not put any in yet (0:32:59) Codey: as like an example. They don’t, they, they literally just, they just walk through it’s as (0:33:02) Al: Don’t think they show anything in that they just it’s like completely empty (0:33:08) Codey: if an animal crossing or coral island or whatever, like you just walk through the part of the museum (0:33:13) Codey: in which the insects are supposed to be. (0:33:15) Codey: I was like waiting, I’m like, is there going to be like a butterfly that lies out? (0:33:16) Al: Yeah, very weird. (0:33:27) Codey: Um, yeah, I was, I was really excited to see insects and then there weren’t any, but that’s (0:33:33) Codey: okay. (0:33:34) Codey: Something to look forward to. (0:33:34) Al: Wooo! (0:33:37) Al: Fields of Mystery app have announced their next update, the second major update coming in March. (0:33:46) Al: It adds a new villager, some additional dialogue and schedules for the NPCs. (0:33:54) Al: More unlocks in the mines, which is important. I need to get further down those mines, (0:34:01) Codey: Yep. Yep. (0:34:01) Al: Although I need to I need to not play this (0:34:05) Al: yet. I need to not go into the cut zone. I think I need to wait for more updates, (0:34:10) Al: otherwise I’ll just end up burning out before the end of it. New areas in the town, additional (0:34:17) Al: requests, more museum stuff, new festival, just yeah. Oh the farmland expansion is added. Oh yes. (0:34:27) Al: Gotta get a bigger farm. Do I need a bigger farm? No I do not. Sprinklers! Yes! Finally! Adding (0:34:30) Codey: But you can. (0:34:34) Al: sprinklers and an auto petter. This is getting good. This game’s getting good. It was already (0:34:43) Al: good. It’s getting even better. They’ve also listed a bunch of stuff that’s coming in future (0:34:48) Al: updates but they just they say in no particular order. Just like here are things that we’re (0:34:50) Codey: But, but the automation is the most important. (0:34:53) Al: thinking about. Oh yes. Gotta love it. Also in-game time adjustment options, which is something that (0:35:03) Al: that always sounds like a good idea. (0:35:07) Codey: I mean people probably use it because they want to like skip forward to something or (0:35:12) Codey: other or skip back possibly if they missed a festival or something. (0:35:16) Al: Yeah. All right. And finally, finally, second, finally, next, next we have (0:35:24) Codey: But penultimate final. (0:35:30) Al: just an ultimate. You don’t need to add on the final one to the end. (0:35:35) Al: Next, we have webfishing have released a plush of their main character, the cat, (0:35:43) Al: on Makeship. So if you want that, and it’s funded, it’s out. (0:35:47) Codey: Uh-huh (0:35:47) Al: Definitely happening. So if you want it, go get it. (0:35:51) Codey: Yep, it is $29.99 and most importantly that Al did not mention is that it is holding a salmon (0:36:00) Al: for sure it’s very cute I don’t need (0:36:01) Codey: That’s the most important part (0:36:05) Codey: No, but wait, do you what if you don’t get it and then you want it later? (0:36:10) Al: So Craig, my youngest, is really into Astrobok recently, right? (0:36:12) Codey: Uh-huh (0:36:14) Codey: Okay (0:36:15) Al: Like obsessed with it. (0:36:17) Al: He’s been playing it a couple of hours most days of the week. (0:36:17) Codey: You (0:36:20) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:36:21) Al: He is, and he’s getting really good at it, right? (0:36:22) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:36:23) Al: This is his first proper game that he’s played. (0:36:26) Al: Like he’s done a couple of bits here and there, (0:36:28) Al: but he’s not really like been playing them properly. (0:36:31) Al: But this is, he’s like doing most of it. (0:36:33) Al: There’s a few times where he’s like, can you help me with this? (0:36:35) Al: Because it’s too difficult, but he’s getting really good at it. (0:36:38) Al: like from it’s been like three weeks. (0:36:40) Al: or something and from the start till now he’s improved so much but he’s absolutely obsessed (0:36:46) Al: with it so much that we we just ordered the astrobot plush and that should be arriving (0:36:49) Codey: Oh. (0:36:51) Al: the day this episode comes out so he is very excited about that. (0:36:54) Codey: So if I hear a squeal from around the world of excitement. (0:36:59) Codey: Cool. (0:36:59) Al: Yeah finally we have information on a new Animal Crossing aquarium tour this time in the UK. We’ll (0:37:07) Al: We’ll come back to that word in a minute. (0:37:10) Al: I believe they did this in Japan and a few other places. (0:37:14) Al: I feel like I said about it in Canada and America, maybe as well. (0:37:18) Al: There’s a few. (0:37:19) Al: Anyway, it’s coming to the UK as well in collaboration with Sea Life UK. (0:37:23) Al: Now, I say UK because it is very much a tiny, tiny portion of one part of the UK. (0:37:32) Al: It’s like four different cities that are like half an hour to travel between each other. (0:37:40) Al: It is like a pathetically small amount, and you might go, “Oh, well, it’s because it’s (0:37:45) Al: Sea Life. (0:37:46) Al: It’s a specific company, and they don’t have any other place. (0:37:49) Al: They do. (0:37:50) Al: They have one in Scotland, and they didn’t do it there. (0:37:52) Codey: Well, yeah, they don’t want to do that, right? (0:37:53) Al: Thank you very much.” (0:37:53) Al: Don’t call it a UK tour if it’s just England. (0:37:57) Al: It’s an England tour, but like saying a US tour, and it’s just New York. (0:38:02) Codey: Yeah, just New York and Los Angeles. (0:38:02) Al: Go away. (0:38:05) Al: It’s a Europe tour, European tour. (0:38:10) Al: I’m annoyed. (0:38:10) Codey: Yeah, I guess I don’t really understand like what this is, (0:38:14) Al: Yeah, I think so, yeah, I believe so. (0:38:15) Codey: like, will there just be characters around? (0:38:20) Codey: Around. (0:38:24) Al: There’s activities as well. (0:38:25) Al: I think they have the stamp thing that they do in the game, so it says, “Visitors will (0:38:31) Al: be able to collect character stamps, discover many interesting facts about the inhabitants (0:38:35) Al: of Sea Life, and meet with Tom Nook and Isabel. (0:38:38) Al: at the end of the visit fans will be able to purchase. (0:38:40) Al: Animal Crossing New Horizons merchandise, of course they will, at the Aquarium store. (0:38:44) Codey: What villager would have to be included in either the merchandise or the stamp thing for you to go? (0:38:54) Al: or for me to travel all the way down to, I think Manchester is the closest one, (0:38:59) Al: which would be a, I think it’s a five hour drive for me, which is not insignificant. (0:39:08) Al: I know it means nothing to Americans who will drive five hours for dinner. (0:39:16) Al: I don’t think there is someone, I don’t really think so, like, (0:39:19) Codey: I would think, so if this was in New York or DC, which are like a three to five hour drive from (0:39:24) Codey: where I am, if Blue Bear was in there, Blue Bear is my favorite. (0:39:30) Al: Yeah, I just don’t think… I think it would be… I would drive two hours to go to this, (0:39:37) Al: I think. That’s how far I would drive to get to this. Coincidentally, about the time it (0:39:41) Al: takes to leave Scotland. I would drive two hours to this. I don’t think there’s anything (0:39:49) Al: realistically that would make me drive five hours. I don’t think I could do that. That’s (0:39:56) Al: too far. Especially considering we have an (0:40:00) Al: aquarium five minutes from us that we have a season pass to. So I would be paying to travel (0:40:08) Al: five hours to then pay to get into an aquarium when I have a season pass to an aquarium next to (0:40:14) Al: me. That doesn’t feel the most sensible situation, right? Oh, we do. All right, that is the news. (0:40:18) Codey: We have an aquarium at home. (0:40:25) Al: So next we will be going into our interview with Jordan, the developer of (0:40:30) Al: overseas retirement. We recorded that at a different time. So if it sounds different, (0:40:36) Al: that’s why. I hope you enjoy the interview. (0:40:38) Al: Weeee! (0:40:39) Al: Woo! (0:40:39) Al: Woo! (0:40:48) Al: Okay, we are now back with the developer of Rusty’s retirement, which just to remind listeners (0:40:56) Al: was the winner of the Harvest Seasons Game of the Year last year. (0:41:01) Al: Hello, welcome to the podcast, what is your name and what are your pronouns? (0:41:06) Jordan: Hiya. My name is Jordan, he/him. Yeah, I’m the developer of Rusty’s retirement, and also a smaller, lesser-known metroidvania called Hyekuda Robot, which is in the same universe as Rusty, actually, if you didn’t know that. A little bit of lore for you. (0:41:24) Al: I did not know that and I do like metroidvanias, maybe I’ll look at that at some point. (0:41:30) Codey: wait it’s a metroid haiku as in haiku the helper of russey (0:41:35) Jordan: Yep (0:41:37) Codey: he metroid what okay continue I have questions (0:41:41) Al: Well, good thing that you have questions because this is an interview, so I guess we’ll start (0:41:48) Al: off with a couple of easy questions. What is your history with games, just in general? (0:41:54) Al: What did you play when you were young? How did you get to where you are with games? (0:41:59) Jordan: Yeah, so I think my sort of gaming journey, let’s say, started when I was little, (0:42:08) Jordan: and I can’t remember the age exactly, but it was when Game Boy Color came out, (0:42:13) Jordan: because that was my first console that I ever got. And I just have super fond memories of playing (0:42:21) Jordan: Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy Color. So yeah, after that, and it was just like all the game. (0:42:29) Jordan: Boy stuff, Game Boy SP, Game Boy SP Advance, all of those ones. Nintendo DS when it came out, (0:42:39) Jordan: you know, all that sort of stuff. And then eventually I got like a PlayStation, I think. (0:42:44) Jordan: So I played like typical PlayStation games like GTA and stuff when I was definitely not age (0:42:51) Jordan: appropriate to play GTA, but still pretty fun times. So yeah, just sort of a mix, but it definitely (0:42:59) Jordan: with Game Boy and Game Boy Color. (0:43:01) Al: Yeah, fair enough. What was your starter in in Pokemon gold? (0:43:04) Jordan: Oh, I think it was the crocodile looking guy. Yes, that’s the one. (0:43:09) Al: Totodile. Yeah, good one. Good one. You’re in good company because we are both also Pokemon fans. (0:43:16) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:43:16) Al: I’ve been doing a lot of Pokemon recently. (0:43:20) Jordan: Yeah, I even I even actually bought because they did this remaster edition of like heart (0:43:25) Jordan: gold or something for like at the time I didn’t have a DS, I think it broke or I was only using (0:43:33) Jordan: my cousins or something like that. So I literally went out and bought a DS just so I could buy (0:43:39) Jordan: Pokemon Heart Gold. And that was like the only game I had for it. That was it. (0:43:44) Al: Yeah, I was actually the same because I dropped out of Pokémon after Gen 2 and came back (0:43:50) Al: for HeartGold SoulSilver. And I didn’t have a DS either, but my mum had a DS for brain (0:43:55) Al: training games. And so I was like, “Can I use your DS, please?” I used her DS and played (0:44:02) Al: HeartGold SoulSilver. I then got my own DSi for when the black and white came out. It (0:44:08) Al: a good time to jump back in, I think. (0:44:10) Codey: I think everyone had that like break period where they like played and then they stopped (0:44:15) Codey: playing and then they jumped back in, or at least I had that, yeah, yeah. (0:44:18) Jordan: - Yeah, I did as well. (0:44:20) Jordan: After HeartGold, I think I went and played all the DS, (0:44:24) Jordan: Pokemon games that released, (0:44:25) Jordan: like Diamond, Pearl, Sapphire, Ruby, all of those ones. (0:44:30) Al: Fair enough. Rusty’s retirement is obviously a farming game. What is your history with farming (0:44:36) Al: games? When did you because obviously there’s got to be a point where you’re like I’m making (0:44:40) Al: a farming game. So how did you get to that point in enjoying farming games or you know (0:44:46) Al: cottagecore games in general? Wow, okay interesting. (0:44:48) Jordan: I’ve never played a farming game, still to this day, other than Rusty’s retirement. (0:44:58) Codey: - Wild. (0:45:00) Jordan: So I know they exist, I know how they work, and obviously when I landed on Rusty’s retirement, (0:45:09) Jordan: well first of all, let me go back a little bit more. So after my first game, which was (0:45:14) Jordan: haikura robot, the same haikura that appears in Russia’s retirement. (0:45:19) Jordan: I was kind of stuck with what to do because making a Metroidvania was just a massive undertaking, especially to do it solo. (0:45:27) Jordan: Like I did all the art, animations, the coding, and there’s just so much content like you need. (0:45:33) Jordan: There was like 10 or 10 to 15 bosses at the end, you know, it’s just so much work. (0:45:39) Jordan: Like each boss needs their own unique animations, attack patterns, all this sort of stuff. (0:45:45) Jordan: And I was like, vowed to myself that I’m never going to (0:45:48) Jordan: put myself through this again, that I’m going to try and make (0:45:52) Jordan: something smaller and simpler as my next game. But when I (0:45:56) Jordan: finished from Metroidvania, that I didn’t know what to do. So I (0:46:03) Jordan: had this sort of brainwave of, I’m just going to make these (0:46:07) Jordan: sort of small prototypes, spend about two weeks on an idea (0:46:11) Jordan: because, you know, I had a bunch of ideas I wanted to try out, (0:46:15) Jordan: spend about two weeks on each sort of idea. (0:46:18) Jordan: And just test them just to want to see if I could actually do some of this stuff, you know, like some my technical capability isn’t like fantastic. I’m not like a fantastic coder. So some of this stuff is just simply out of my reach, just from a technical standpoint. (0:46:34) Al: You’re not making a 3D Zelda game. (0:46:35) Jordan: And then (0:46:37) Jordan: Yeah, or like, you know, I love strategy games and forex games as well. So like, but those things are like humongous. I would never be able to do something like that. (0:46:47) Jordan: And, and yes. (0:46:48) Jordan: So I just did these prototypes and I made Rusty and funnily, funnily enough. (0:46:55) Jordan: I actually shelved Rusty for like three months because I made it and most (0:47:01) Jordan: of the prototypes I made, and then I showed them on Twitter, right? (0:47:06) Jordan: I showed like, Hey guys, what do you think of this sort of thing? (0:47:10) Jordan: Just to kind of gauge, you know, interest and stuff like this, because I (0:47:14) Jordan: didn’t want to make something that, you know, at the end of the day, (0:47:17) Jordan: nobody wants to play. (0:47:18) Jordan: I was kind of trying to find this balance of like, okay, I’m going to do these (0:47:21) Jordan: ideas that I want to make and find out if I want to make them, but then also (0:47:26) Jordan: show them to people to see if there’s interest because I think if there’s (0:47:28) Jordan: interest, it also kind of motivates you to make it as well. (0:47:31) Jordan: You know, so it’s like this balance. (0:47:34) Jordan: Uh, but for Rusty, I thought, man, this is such a stupid idea. (0:47:38) Jordan: Nobody’s going to want to play this. (0:47:40) Jordan: And I just shelved it for like three months. (0:47:42) Jordan: Uh, but luckily I had commissioned, um, the sprites for. (0:47:48) Jordan: Rusty and they came through and I was thinking, you know, I should at (0:47:52) Jordan: least put sprites in the game now that they’ve done, just see what it looks like. (0:47:56) Jordan: And that’s when I thought, Oh, it was pretty cool. (0:47:58) Jordan: And I should make this into something. (0:48:00) Jordan: But before that, I hadn’t played any farming games or anything like that. (0:48:04) Jordan: But then once I kind of had this rusty idea and I also put it on Twitter (0:48:09) Jordan: and people really liked it, then I started like, uh, researching more (0:48:13) Jordan: into farming games and stuff. (0:48:14) Codey: » Mm-hmm. (0:48:16) Al: if you still not played any. (0:48:16) Jordan: But interestingly enough, I… (0:48:18) Jordan: No, I haven’t, because I was tempted to play Stardew Valley, (0:48:22) Jordan: but I didn’t want to get too influenced by the decisions that were made in that game. (0:48:29) Jordan: Like, I researched enough to know what’s the sort of loop, the core gameplay loop, (0:48:34) Jordan: and understand how that works, but I didn’t want to play it and see exactly how it’s done, (0:48:39) Jordan: because then I felt like it’s just going to influence my decision too much. (0:48:43) Jordan: And that kind of happened with my first game th

Welcome to the Grim Season. Not only have we dragged ourselves back to Sinnoh for 2021's kawaii/chibi/uwu overhaul, but we've decided to doubly punish ourselves with another take on the Nuzlocke: SOUL LINK! Meet our twisted new avatars for the season, our first impressions of Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, and find out if one (aka both because our souls are intwined) of us happened to suffer any dearly departed 'mon on the first leg. Before embarking on this journey, I had only played Blue and Diamond. Much like the protagonists at the start of the games, I have embarked on my very own Pokémon adventure filled with discovery. As for my rival Logan, he's been earning badges and becoming Champion since the beginning. He's played almost every mainline game before this season and is here to make sure I memorize the type chart. These ten episodes are not all we have in store for Pokémon. Super Chapter Select members have access to our Poké Battles in every single game. It's a 10 round rivalry-fueled gauntlet to see who truly is the best. You can sign up for just $20 a year for all these battles, longer shows, and exclusive episodes. You can learn more about Super Chapter Select here. The art this season is taking the iconic Pokémon start screens and modifying them for the show. I've struggled coming up with this concept, but after playing around with fonts, colors, and console boarders, this is what we have chosen. As of this writing, I haven't made most of the art yet, so I am excited to see where it goes! We are thrilled to finally announce Season 6 - Pokémon! We've been working on this one for over a year. The first episode will be launching next month – August 23, 2023 – with new episodes following in a fortnightly manner. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts!

[00:31.000 –> 00:36.000] Hello, farmers, and welcome to another episode of The Harvest Season. [00:36.000 –> 00:38.000] My name is Al. [00:38.000 –> 00:40.000] And my name is Jonny. [00:40.000 –> 00:46.000] And we’re here today to talk about games. So many, so many, many, many, many games. [00:49.000 –> 00:53.000] There’s too many games, Al. Too many games. [00:53.000 –> 01:01.000] So many games. We were talking before we recorded that the problem is that the games are almost all good-looking games. [01:01.000 –> 01:06.000] So it’s not like they’re all terrible-looking games, because if they were all terrible-looking games, we could just ignore them. [01:08.000 –> 01:15.000] Yeah, no, there’s a lot of really good-looking games, and I feel like I’m going to get sucked into a, you know, world of these games. [01:15.000 –> 01:18.000] And I don’t have time, Al. I just don’t have time. [01:18.000 –> 01:20.000] I know, I know, I know. [01:20.000 –> 01:25.000] Alright, well, speaking of not having time, let’s get on with the show. [01:25.000 –> 01:30.000] Listeners, well, listeners, I shouldn’t say listeners, because I’m talking about the transcripts now. [01:30.000 –> 01:37.000] People who need the transcripts for any reason, they are available and shown on the website, so go get them if you need them. [01:37.000 –> 01:43.000] Today, our main topic is just news, because there’s so much of it. [01:43.000 –> 01:48.000] We are recording this a couple of hours after the Wholesome Direct came out, so there’s a bunch of news from that. [01:48.000 –> 01:53.000] And there was just a lot of news for a week anyway, right? There’s been a lot of news this week. [01:53.000 –> 01:59.000] I don’t know, oh wait, no, I do know why, because apparently it’s Summer Game Fest, so that’s why there’s all the news. [01:59.000 –> 02:06.000] Look, I know people love these big things, but like, oh my word, could we spread it throughout the year a little bit more? [02:06.000 –> 02:08.000] This is just too much for one week. [02:08.000 –> 02:16.000] It’s way too much. And I think one of my takeaways from the Wholesome Direct is I actually feel like it does a disservice to all of these small, great games. [02:16.000 –> 02:23.000] Because I’m sure there are some great games that we will not talk about today, because there’s just too many for us to keep in our heads. [02:23.000 –> 02:31.000] Yeah, I agree. I don’t know what a good way to do it is, like, that’s probably not my job, but it just, yeah, I agree. [02:31.000 –> 02:36.000] Like, there are so many, by the end of it, when they did their montage, I was just kind of glazed over going, [02:36.000 –> 02:41.000] yeah, sure, looks good, don’t know what, I don’t have the energy to look into that game just now. [02:42.000 –> 02:48.000] You know, I looked into all of the farming game specific ones, but anyway, we’ll get into that when we get into it. [02:48.000 –> 02:51.000] Before that, Johnny, what have you been up to? [02:51.000 –> 02:57.000] Well, and I think our greenhouse episode on this game just dropped, but just Zelda. [02:57.000 –> 03:03.000] Last night, or yesterday, I came to the realisation that I was kind of hitting the point where I was like, [03:03.000 –> 03:11.000] ooh, I might be wanting to play some other things, and unlike Breath of the Wild, I kind of want to see where this story’s going, [03:11.000 –> 03:16.000] so I’m just going to main line the story, and yesterday I did finish the main story, [03:16.000 –> 03:25.000] and the ending of that game is just, like, peak video game nonsense that I don’t really recall from the ending of a video game, [03:25.000 –> 03:31.000] like, doing it that well in a long, long time. Maybe ever. It was excellent. [03:31.000 –> 03:39.000] I love Zelda, I love the way that game ended, I love everything about this game. It is freaking awesome. [03:39.000 –> 03:47.000] Yeah, I agree. I also finished it yesterday, and we’ll not spoil it, obviously, but I felt, personally, with Breath of the Wild, [03:47.000 –> 03:53.000] that the biggest lacking thing in it was the end story. To me, it just felt a bit meh. [03:53.000 –> 04:02.000] It was kind of like, oh, battle! Oh, wait, now he’s massive! Go shoot him! None of it really made any sense. [04:02.000 –> 04:09.000] Whereas, I think in this one, it felt very tied into all of the story you’ve kind of gone through, [04:09.000 –> 04:15.000] and when certain things happen at the end, you’re like, of course that makes sense, of course that was going to happen, [04:15.000 –> 04:22.000] and then how that then led into the final part of the final battle was really good. It kind of balanced things. I really liked it. [04:22.000 –> 04:29.000] I really liked it as well. There was one giant plot hole, which was kind of always going to be there, that really annoys me, [04:29.000 –> 04:37.000] but other than that, I thought it was awesome, and it kind of makes me want to see the team that did Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom [04:37.000 –> 04:47.000] do a smaller, more story-focused style game now, because after Breath of the Wild, I was like, I just want them to do big open world stuff, [04:47.000 –> 04:53.000] because clearly that’s what they’re good at, but this one was like, oh, they can also do just really good traditional gameplay. [04:53.000 –> 05:02.000] Yeah, I think it’s interesting, because it’s really hard to do a good open world story, because you can’t rely on anybody doing anything. [05:02.000 –> 05:10.000] Once you’ve done the tutorial, all bets are off. You could be coming to that last bit without having anything else before, [05:10.000 –> 05:20.000] and I want to watch the cutscenes for if you haven’t done certain things in the game, because obviously I’ve done almost everything. [05:20.000 –> 05:25.000] I haven’t done all of the side quests, and I obviously haven’t done all the Korok seeds, but I’ve done everything else. [05:25.000 –> 05:35.000] I’ve done all of the story bits, and I’ve done all of the shrines, and all of that sort of stuff, and I’ve done more than 50% of everything except the Korok seeds, [05:35.000 –> 05:45.000] and so it’d be interesting to see how that story changes if you haven’t done certain, but I feel like most of that would still make sense to you. [05:45.000 –> 05:50.000] You wouldn’t understand why certain things happen necessarily, but it’s not like, oh, that makes no sense. [05:50.000 –> 05:58.000] You’re like, okay, that’s a thing that apparently happens. Fine, whatever. Suspension of disbelief, I don’t need to care why that happens. [05:58.000 –> 06:01.000] It’s really hard to talk about this without making specifics, so let’s move on, shall we? [06:01.000 –> 06:07.000] I haven’t played anything else, because yesterday my Switch broke, and I’m very sad about that. [06:07.000 –> 06:17.000] I do have multiple Switches, so I can play games on other Switches, but I’m just a bit down about my Switch breaking yesterday, because all my Pokémon saves are on that Switch, [06:17.000 –> 06:19.000] and I really hope I don’t lose them all. [06:19.000 –> 06:21.000] Is it like a big break, or…? [06:21.000 –> 06:29.000] So I think, according to the error that shows on screen, all my Googling says that it is just an issue with the USB port, [06:29.000 –> 06:34.000] and they should just be able to hotswap out the USB port, and it should all just work. [06:34.000 –> 06:43.000] But, as with everything, you never know what’s happening under there, and I have heard of people sending in Switches to get fixed, and it comes back with the memory wiped, [06:43.000 –> 06:49.000] which would be very sad. Very, very sad, because I would lose all of my Pokémon games except Sword and Brilliant Diamond. [06:49.000 –> 06:53.000] Everything else would be gone on the Switch, so I would be very sad if that happened. [06:53.000 –> 06:54.000] Yeah, that would suck. [06:54.000 –> 06:55.000] Especially… [06:55.000 –> 06:57.000] Of all of the games to keep. [06:57.000 –> 06:58.000] Oh, I know. [06:58.000 –> 07:12.000] I guess I can’t get into a rant about this just now, but I’m going to, because I cannot comprehend why they think that the miniscule risk of people cheating in the game by cloning things through the save state, [07:12.000 –> 07:20.000] is more important than literally losing about 600 hours combined of Pokémon games that would happen. [07:20.000 –> 07:26.000] And I’m not going to go and redo all of them, because I do not have the time or the energy to do all of that, [07:26.000 –> 07:30.000] and it’s just going to mean that I’m going to be really disappointed for the rest of this generation, [07:30.000 –> 07:36.000] because, yeah, sure, I’ll probably play one of the games to get back into Endgame so I can do the things and do the DLC, [07:36.000 –> 07:45.000] but I will not end up enjoying it as much as I would if I had the saves that I have spent 150 hours playing since release, right? [07:45.000 –> 07:49.000] It just, it boggles the mind that they think that’s okay, but anyway, whatever. [07:49.000 –> 07:56.000] But you see, Elle, they’ve done such a good job of stopping them duplicating Pokémon in all other ways. [07:56.000 –> 08:01.000] This is the thing! It’s so easy to do these things! [08:01.000 –> 08:09.000] It’s so annoying, and it’s literally only Pokémon, right? Because even Animal Crossing has a way to back up the save, right? [08:09.000 –> 08:16.000] If I lose that, I can get that back, and every other game I have on the Switch is backed up to Nintendo Switch Online. [08:16.000 –> 08:22.000] I pay a service to do this, and I can’t use it for the game that matters most to me! [08:22.000 –> 08:31.000] And even, like, they have Pokémon Home, right? Surely it’s not that difficult to even back up the cloud save into maybe a space like Home, right? [08:31.000 –> 08:36.000] Which has all of the Pokémon and stuff anyway. I don’t know. There’s, yeah, I’m with you. There’s so many ways to do it. [08:36.000 –> 08:40.000] They could absolutely do it, because with Animal Crossing, the way it works, right, is you go, [08:40.000 –> 08:44.000] oh, I have lost my Switch or whatever, and then they give you a way to download it, right? [08:44.000 –> 08:48.000] It’s not just default, or I can do it whenever I want. You could absolutely do that. [08:48.000 –> 08:53.000] Go like, oh, these are backed up, but you can only access them by emailing us and saying, [08:53.000 –> 08:57.000] yes, my Switch broke. It was wiped. Can I please get my saves? [08:57.000 –> 09:02.000] And that massively increases the barrier to entry. You can’t just go and clone things whenever you want, right? [09:02.000 –> 09:07.000] You can still, there’s still a way to do it, but nobody’s going to do that realistically, right? [09:07.000 –> 09:12.000] They’re going to use the hundreds of other easier ways to clone Pokémon than that, right? [09:12.000 –> 09:18.000] There are literally bots on Discord you can go and message and then trade with them on the game, [09:18.000 –> 09:23.000] and it will send you back a copy of your Pokémon. That is literally a thing you can do. [09:23.000 –> 09:24.000] Anyway. [09:24.000 –> 09:26.000] Yes, agree. It’s stupid. [09:26.000 –> 09:28.000] Shall we talk about some news? [09:28.000 –> 09:29.000] Let’s do it. Let’s talk about news. [09:29.000 –> 09:34.000] Sorry, I just, it’s all very fresh. I’ve literally, it’s been like 27 hours since this has happened, [09:34.000 –> 09:37.000] so it’s all very fresh. I needed to get that rant out. [09:38.000 –> 09:42.000] So a quick preamble to this. Obviously, we’ve just had the Wholesome Direct. [09:42.000 –> 09:47.000] As you’re listening to this, it will have been out a few days ago, so you may well know a lot of what’s happening, [09:47.000 –> 09:52.000] and you may have gone and watched it. That’s fine. If you want to go watch it, we’ve got a link in the show notes to that. [09:52.000 –> 09:59.000] I’ll also put in a link to the Wholesome Games videos list, which has every trailer that they had in there, [09:59.000 –> 10:02.000] if you want to go and watch them. There are so many videos. [10:02.000 –> 10:07.000] We are not going to talk about games that just showed another trailer. [10:07.000 –> 10:10.000] Because that’s too much. We’re not doing that. [10:10.000 –> 10:14.000] There was 80 games in this trailer. We’re not doing that. [10:14.000 –> 10:16.000] We’re only going to talk about actual news. [10:16.000 –> 10:20.000] If you want to see everything, go watch the Direct. [10:20.000 –> 10:25.000] It would take us more time to discuss everything than it would be just go watch the Direct. [10:25.000 –> 10:30.000] But we will be talking about all the Farming and Cottagecore related news that came out. [10:30.000 –> 10:34.000] Okay, cool. And also, some of this news didn’t come out the Wholesome Direct. [10:34.000 –> 10:37.000] Because, as I said, it’s a busy week. There’s lots of stuff. [10:37.000 –> 10:38.000] So we’re just going to get into it. [10:38.000 –> 10:44.000] So I’ve chunked this up into a few different sections of different kinds of news, as I like to do when there’s lots of news. [10:44.000 –> 10:46.000] So the first section is releases. [10:46.000 –> 10:49.000] So first of all, massive news. [10:49.000 –> 10:55.000] Harvest Moon, the original Harvest Moon on SNES, is now on Switch Online outside of Japan. [10:55.000 –> 10:56.000] Woo! [10:56.000 –> 10:58.000] This is awesome. [10:58.000 –> 11:03.000] I’m not really a big one for going back and playing old games. [11:03.000 –> 11:09.000] But the ability to go back and play Harvest Moon is pretty tempting, right? [11:09.000 –> 11:15.000] We’ve talked in the past about preserving the historical nature of Cottagecore games. [11:15.000 –> 11:19.000] And this is a really little awesome step forward in that space. [11:19.000 –> 11:20.000] So this is very exciting. [11:20.000 –> 11:21.000] Absolutely. [11:21.000 –> 11:23.000] I will be going back and playing at some point. [11:23.000 –> 11:28.000] It’ll probably take me a while because this month is insane and then there’s the summer. [11:28.000 –> 11:33.000] But at some point I will go back and play it because I think it’s good for me to have played it. [11:33.000 –> 11:36.000] But I think most people won’t. [11:36.000 –> 11:46.000] But what I think is more exciting than the game itself being on is the fact that Natsume and Marvelous have managed to actually make an agreement on this. [11:46.000 –> 11:52.000] The two companies who fell out 15 years ago on this have now managed to make an agreement and say, [11:52.000 –> 11:56.000] yes, this game with this name can now go on on a service. [11:56.000 –> 11:57.000] That is huge. [11:57.000 –> 11:59.000] I honestly never thought this would happen. [11:59.000 –> 12:01.000] No, I don’t think anyone did. [12:01.000 –> 12:07.000] So, yeah, huge news, huge thing to be released. [12:07.000 –> 12:09.000] And it’s Switch Online, right? [12:09.000 –> 12:13.000] So you have to have the subscription in order to get it and then it’s free once you’ve got the subscription. [12:13.000 –> 12:14.000] Correct. [12:14.000 –> 12:20.000] And it’s just the lower priced Nintendo Switch Online because it’s SNES. [12:20.000 –> 12:22.000] So you don’t have to go for the more expensive. [12:22.000 –> 12:27.000] Next, we have a date for the early access of One Lonely Outpost and that is the 26th of June. [12:27.000 –> 12:29.000] So was that two weeks away? Something like that? [12:29.000 –> 12:30.000] Something like that. [12:30.000 –> 12:33.000] Yeah, it’ll be just about two weeks away. [12:33.000 –> 12:35.000] I’ll be totally honest with you, Johnny. [12:35.000 –> 12:37.000] I didn’t realise it was early access that was releasing in June. [12:37.000 –> 12:39.000] I thought it was the full release. [12:40.000 –> 12:48.000] I also thought this game was closer to release and I watched the new trailer and I don’t know about this game. [12:48.000 –> 12:54.000] Like, I like the idea of what it’s trying to do, you know, where you’re establishing a colony on a new planet. [12:54.000 –> 12:59.000] I think that’s an interesting twist on the traditional farming game. [12:59.000 –> 13:04.000] And then, you know, they’ve just got like fishing and look, I don’t want to rant about fishing again. [13:04.000 –> 13:08.000] But why does every game need fishing? [13:08.000 –> 13:14.000] We are on another planet and we still just have, like, the fishing to look different, which, cool. [13:14.000 –> 13:20.000] But I just want real, like, innovation. [13:20.000 –> 13:24.000] Yeah, I think that’s the thing is you watch the trailer and it starts out really interesting because you’re like, [13:24.000 –> 13:30.000] oh, you’re literally alone on this planet and then you’re trying to create an outpost and that’s really interesting. [13:30.000 –> 13:39.000] And I do like the idea of, like, slowly kind of terraforming, which does lead to more standard farming stuff once you get to that point. [13:39.000 –> 13:45.000] And then it’s like, oh, you have to, like, hire new people to come to the colony, blah, blah, blah, blah. [13:45.000 –> 13:48.000] So then they introduce the relationships again for some reason. [13:48.000 –> 13:54.000] But then it kind of goes into an interesting, like, oh, there’s maybe more to this than seems. [13:54.000 –> 13:59.000] Like, maybe there are other people on this planet because, like, there’s a point where it says we were told we were the first or something like that. [13:59.000 –> 14:03.000] So it kind of sounds like there’s a mystery element to it, which I’m intrigued by. [14:03.000 –> 14:07.000] Yeah, and yeah, the mystery part does seem intriguing. [14:07.000 –> 14:15.000] But there was even a weird thing, like, and maybe this is why I’m so irate at, like, the fishing person, is they showed you meeting her and she’s like, [14:15.000 –> 14:21.000] I’m the local fisherperson around here. And it’s like, what? What do you mean, like, ugh. [14:21.000 –> 14:28.000] Yes. But anyway, there was implications of some bigger story going on that does seem interesting. [14:28.000 –> 14:34.000] And, you know, I’m sure there’ll be a number of our listeners who are excited to try this when it comes to early access. [14:34.000 –> 14:39.000] The other thing is, obviously, this was the game where the developer changed, like, maybe a year ago or something like that. [14:39.000 –> 14:48.000] And a lot of people are disappointed with the change in art direction since then, which I’m going to be honest, I have no visual memory. [14:48.000 –> 14:54.000] So I have to go back and look at what it was and compare it. But I just, that’s a thing. Like, some people are disappointed. [14:54.000 –> 14:58.000] I am on board with people that are disappointed in the art direction. [14:58.000 –> 15:00.000] Just in general. [15:00.000 –> 15:13.000] No, well, in general, but for this game in particular, I think it looks, I just don’t like the style that they’ve landed on versus what was shown in some of the earlier screenshots and trailers. [15:13.000 –> 15:18.000] I’d need to spend more time looking at the two side by side because, as I say, I literally have no idea what it looked like before. [15:18.000 –> 15:22.000] Right, like, I cannot visualise that at all. [15:22.000 –> 15:25.000] Next, we have a release date for Fae Farm. [15:25.000 –> 15:29.000] So this was one that was first announced in a Nintendo Direct last year, I think. [15:29.000 –> 15:37.000] I’m surprised it’s coming out this early, but there we go. We’ve got the 8th of September this year and a new trailer. [15:37.000 –> 15:47.000] Yeah, exciting to see this one get a release date because, like you, this was very much in the definitely going to be 2024 bucket in my mind. [15:47.000 –> 15:58.000] New trailer looks fun. I can’t remember if that said whether or not they were going to have co-op, but co-op is confirmed for this one, which is cool. [15:58.000 –> 16:05.000] I think that was a kind of fundamental thing about it, I think. Not required, but that was one of their big things was, yeah, it’s a co-op game. [16:05.000 –> 16:09.000] Yeah, because it was definitely all over this trailer. [16:09.000 –> 16:15.000] Yeah, and the first trailer in the Nintendo Direct last year was, like, multiple of them bouncing around. I think they made a big thing. [16:15.000 –> 16:23.000] Yeah, it looks cool. I think I talked about this last time, but I’m a little bit over the whole, like, you know, it’s farming plus witches sort of thing. [16:23.000 –> 16:32.000] I don’t know that this one’s really doing enough for me to be like, yeah, I really want to check it out, but it does look like a good version of one of these. [16:32.000 –> 16:44.000] The art style to me is very reminiscent of, like, you know, the sort of Disney or Pixar-ish style games from, like, the early 2000s just scaled up for sort of modern times. [16:44.000 –> 16:49.000] And I do love the backflip that the character does, where they do, like, the double jump or whatever it is. That’s kind of great. [16:49.000 –> 16:55.000] Yeah, it looks like the movement is fluid and fun, which is very rare in farming games. [16:55.000 –> 16:59.000] Like, normally it’s just like, oh yeah, you just move forwards and backwards and yeah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. [16:59.000 –> 17:08.000] So it does look like a fun movement game. But yeah, I think I need to, I was going to say, I think I need to look into it more before I decide if I’m going to buy it and play it. [17:08.000 –> 17:18.000] But no, that’s my job. That’s what I’m doing. I’m going to play it and tell you. I can’t remember, did I get, was that a Kickstarter one or not? I need to double check. I have too many Kickstarters. [17:19.000 –> 17:31.000] My Time at Sandrock. So this is the, just in case you’re not aware, this is the sequel to My Time at Portia, currently in early access, full release, 1.0 release, sorry, coming 26th of September. [17:31.000 –> 17:43.000] Al, I think I’m ready to get burned again. I was so excited for My Time at Portia and I played like five minutes of that game and hated just about every second of it. [17:44.000 –> 17:49.000] And then I watched the trailer for My Time at Sandrock and it looks really good. [17:49.000 –> 17:54.000] Oh, Jonny, Jonny, Jonny, Jonny. Well, you can do that episode then. [17:56.000 –> 18:05.000] I just, I don’t know. Like I hated the crafting in it and I’m sure that’s going to be all over this version. Maybe I need to watch someone play the early access so I can get it out of my system. [18:05.000 –> 18:16.000] But, um, I don’t know. It looks really cool. And I like the whole sort of Western vibe for it. Again, like it seems like September is going to be a bit of a busy month. [18:16.000 –> 18:24.000] Not just September, the 26th of September, because that is My Time at Sandrock. It’s also Mineko’s Night Market, which we already knew about. [18:24.000 –> 18:32.000] And there’s another game coming out in the 26th of September, which I’m now moving up the list because that works, is Paleo Pines is coming out on the 26th of September. [18:32.000 –> 18:36.000] Three farming games coming out on the same day. [18:43.000 –> 18:53.000] Okay, I’m not playing My Time at Sandrock, probably ever. Paleo Pines I definitely want to play, but I’m sorry. Mineko comes first. Mineko’s Night Market comes first. Sorry, Paleo Pines. [18:53.000 –> 18:59.000] Yep. Yep. I was like, it sucks to not be Mineko’s Night Market because I think that’s the top of everybody’s list. [18:59.000 –> 19:05.000] There wasn’t an Echoes trailer in the Wholesome Direct, but technically no news. [19:05.000 –> 19:08.000] I believe it was on the Wholesome Direct pre-show. [19:08.000 –> 19:11.000] Oh, don’t get me started on this, Johnny! [19:11.000 –> 19:14.000] You had to know I was going to get you started on this at some point. [19:14.000 –> 19:20.000] This thing, the Wholesome Direct, was scheduled to start at 5pm My Time. [19:20.000 –> 19:24.000] And you tune in and it’s like, oh, here’s the countdown. Okay, fine, whatever, the countdown. [19:24.000 –> 19:31.000] And then what you think is the direct starts. And then halfway through they’re like, oh, and the last thing of our pre-show. [19:31.000 –> 19:36.000] And I’m like, I’m sorry, what now? This isn’t the show! Why is this not the direct? [19:36.000 –> 19:41.000] Why is this a pre-show that was meant to happen before the scheduled time for the thing? [19:41.000 –> 19:48.000] Like, it’s not, ugh. I just don’t understand. Why is that not just part of the thing? [19:48.000 –> 19:53.000] How are these things? It’s like they were like, oh, we can’t fit these ones into the direct. Let’s put them before the direct. [19:53.000 –> 19:58.000] But let’s put them at the scheduled time for the direct so that everybody sees them anyway. [19:58.000 –> 20:04.000] So they may as well have been in. It’s like, if you’re going to do a pre-show, do a pre-show. [20:04.000 –> 20:08.000] Don’t do a pre-show at the time that the show is meant to be. [20:08.000 –> 20:12.000] Also, what even is a pre-show when it’s just a YouTube livestream? [20:12.000 –> 20:17.000] Yeah, it wasn’t even a livestream. If it was a livestream it would make sense, right? [20:17.000 –> 20:22.000] Because then it’s just like a livestream starts and then at some point the pre-show happens and then the show happens. [20:22.000 –> 20:29.000] It was a premiere. It was just a video that they upload to go live at a certain time and everybody watches it like it’s a live show. [20:29.000 –> 20:31.000] But it’s not. It’s just a YouTube video. [20:31.000 –> 20:35.000] Oh my god, yes. So that makes absolutely no sense. [20:35.000 –> 20:39.000] It’s, you know, not like people are sitting there like, oh, message your friends, you know, it’s started. [20:39.000 –> 20:44.000] The pre-show’s starting. You’ve got to get it now. Like, it’s just a YouTube video. Come on. [20:44.000 –> 20:50.000] There was another one that I was watching yesterday, the Future of Play direct, which, stupid name, but whatever. [20:50.000 –> 20:58.000] They did it as a premiere as well. They had an hour long inside the premiere before the actual show. [20:58.000 –> 21:03.000] So if you tuned in when it went, oh, it’s going live now, you click on it, there’s an hour to go! [21:03.000 –> 21:10.000] Right, okay, fine. But the worst bit is, now, if you go to that YouTube video, it just has that hour of nonsense at the beginning. [21:10.000 –> 21:17.000] You have to forward on it. You have to go scroll through an hour of this hour and a half long video to see anything. [21:17.000 –> 21:24.000] I don’t, hey, pro tip, right, to all the people out there, and realistically, these people should know, [21:24.000 –> 21:28.000] because it was, I can’t remember, it was IGN, I think, that had this video up. Pro tip to IGN, [21:28.000 –> 21:34.000] I don’t know if anybody on your team knows this, but you can actually edit YouTube videos after they’ve been published [21:34.000 –> 21:39.000] to, like, trim down the beginning. You can do that. It’s a thing you can do, just to let you know. [21:39.000 –> 21:45.000] Also, you don’t have to do that. Don’t give it an hour long, like, it’s just, just make it go live. [21:45.000 –> 21:51.000] When you say it’s going to go live. Also, another thing, YouTube premiers have a countdown on the front of them. [21:51.000 –> 21:55.000] You don’t need to add your own countdown onto your video, because they already have a countdown. [21:55.000 –> 21:59.000] See, when you tune into a video, and there’s a countdown, and then the countdown stops, and then there’s another countdown, [21:59.000 –> 22:05.000] that’s very annoying. Just saying. No matter how lovely your countdown is, and Wholesome Games, your countdown was lovely. [22:05.000 –> 22:12.000] It was lovely, lovely to watch. But you know what, it’s six minutes past five, I want to be watching the thing now. [22:12.000 –> 22:15.000] I’m so pleased with how this went. [22:15.000 –> 22:22.000] Moonstone Island is releasing this summer. It’s really funny when it’s like, oh, here’s a, here’s an update on a release window, [22:22.000 –> 22:28.000] and it’s like, summer. Okay, fine. It’s summer now. Where’s the game? I don’t, just. [22:28.000 –> 22:33.000] I don’t even remember what Moonstone Island is. There were so many games showing this. [22:33.000 –> 22:36.000] I think there’s Flying Islands in this game. I lose track. [22:36.000 –> 22:39.000] Yeah, this is like the one with the Baba Yaga house. [22:39.000 –> 22:42.000] Which is a funny thing to hear now. [22:42.000 –> 22:47.000] Flying Islands, how original. [22:47.000 –> 22:50.000] Creature collecting life sim, this one is. [22:50.000 –> 22:55.000] It’s definitely, floating island is definitely the thing of the day, and creature collecting as well. [22:55.000 –> 23:01.000] Like, this one is kind of like just using all of the buzzwords of the day, and yet it still looks really good. [23:01.000 –> 23:06.000] Like, it’s got a nice pixelated art style. I don’t know, I’m really into this game. [23:06.000 –> 23:13.000] Yeah, me too. Their Steam page says Q3, which is not exactly the same as summer, [23:13.000 –> 23:16.000] no matter what definition of summer you use, but whatever, fine. [23:16.000 –> 23:21.000] Look, I think we’ve learned this year that summer is a very flexible word. [23:21.000 –> 23:31.000] I just, right, I want, I want game developers and publishers and PR people to stop using those words. [23:31.000 –> 23:37.000] Stop using spring, summer, winter, autumn, fall, whatever. Stop it. [23:37.000 –> 23:43.000] Use Q’s, right, because Q2, we all know what Q2 is. Cheers. Do that. [23:43.000 –> 23:48.000] Do we all know what Q2 is, Al? You might be assuming a lot of things about a lot of people. [23:48.000 –> 23:51.000] Well, you know what Q2 is. Don’t even pretend like you don’t know what Q2 is. [23:51.000 –> 23:54.000] I mean, I know what Q2 is, but, you know. [23:55.000 –> 24:02.000] Do not do the whole, oh, is it a Gregorian calendar year or is it a financial year? [24:02.000 –> 24:05.000] No, I don’t care. No, stop it. [24:05.000 –> 24:08.000] You cut me off before I even get started, Al. [24:10.000 –> 24:14.000] There was a new trailer for that as well. The game looks good. The news is it’s releasing in the summer. [24:14.000 –> 24:16.000] There’s nothing else new. Moving on. [24:17.000 –> 24:26.000] Smushy Come Home, which, by the way, I looked at the title and, wait, I know what that game is. [24:26.000 –> 24:33.000] That wasn’t the name, was it? Like, it’s impressive having a name for a game, and I didn’t see anything else. [24:33.000 –> 24:38.000] I just initially saw, oh, Smushy Come Home is coming out, because I saw that before the Direct started. [24:38.000 –> 24:43.000] They announced it just before the Direct. I was like, I do know what game they’re talking about, right? [24:43.000 –> 24:48.000] It’s the toad guy that’s, you know, going around and delivering mail and stuff, right? Fine. [24:48.000 –> 24:52.000] But that wasn’t the name, was it? And no, it wasn’t. Turns out it wasn’t the name. [24:52.000 –> 25:04.000] They had to change their name because they got cease and desist from a company with the same name as what they originally had, which was Shumi. [25:04.000 –> 25:07.000] So it was Shumi. Now it’s Smushy. [25:07.000 –> 25:09.000] Smushy. Smushy’s a great name. [25:09.000 –> 25:17.000] They say the name is Smushy, and then they try and describe the name of it, like, where’s the description? [25:17.000 –> 25:24.000] Pronounced S-M-U-S-H-Y. And I’m like, I’m sorry, the thing I’m not sure about is not there’s a Y at the end, right? [25:24.000 –> 25:29.000] The thing I’m confused about here is, how do you pronounce the U sound? Is it Smushy or Smushy? [25:29.000 –> 25:32.000] I assume it’s Smushy, right? Because it’s mushroom. [25:33.000 –> 25:36.000] Oh, okay. Yeah, we’ll go with that. [25:36.000 –> 25:42.000] But I just thought it might be U because presumably it was Shumi, the original name, right? It wasn’t Shummy, right? [25:42.000 –> 25:47.000] So I thought maybe we could see the consonant sound. Yeah, exactly. See, this is the problem. [25:47.000 –> 25:51.000] This is the problem. If you’re going to give us a pronunciation gain, give us a proper, record yourself saying it. [25:51.000 –> 25:56.000] That’s the best way to do it. Record yourself. All good. Anyway. [25:56.000 –> 26:00.000] Sorry, yes. Smushy come home is out now. [26:00.000 –> 26:05.000] That’s the news. It’s out now. Two days ago they were like, oh, big news coming Saturday. [26:05.000 –> 26:11.000] Not just big news, big thing. This is good. This is a good way to release a game. Just go, hey, out now. [26:11.000 –> 26:17.000] What was very funny is, in the trailer for this, the developer, because I believe it was developed by, [26:17.000 –> 26:24.000] I can’t remember their name, but I believe they developed the full game except for the music. [26:24.000 –> 26:31.000] I think it was just one guy, basically, yeah. And when he introduced the trailers, you know, did a bit of a, [26:31.000 –> 26:35.000] and wait till the end for, you know, like, make sure you watch to the end. [26:35.000 –> 26:38.000] And like the way that makes it seem like it’s going to be some really lame announcement. [26:38.000 –> 26:43.000] And then it’s just like all of a sudden and like kind of small text like out now. And I was like, wait, what? [26:43.000 –> 26:48.000] Out now? You should make that a much bigger deal. Much, much, much bigger. [26:48.000 –> 26:53.000] Yeah. Yeah. I really like the look of this game. I think it’s really cute. [26:53.000 –> 26:58.000] I’ll be interested to see how it actually plays. But yeah, it’s out now. Go play it if you want to play it. [26:58.000 –> 27:04.000] It’s out now on Steam and Switch. Wow. No, no Switch coming later. That’s impressive. [27:04.000 –> 27:05.000] That’s very impressive. [27:05.000 –> 27:11.000] Yeah. And so it’s on launch sale with 20% off. So good time to buy it. [27:11.000 –> 27:17.000] That’s all the release date information. Next, we have some updates and DLC. [27:17.000 –> 27:22.000] So the first one is the new Disney Dreamlight Valley update. The forgetting update is out now. [27:22.000 –> 27:27.000] Yeah, this looks, this is kind of the biggest update to date. [27:27.000 –> 27:32.000] If you’ve played through Disney Dreamlight Valley already, [27:32.000 –> 27:37.000] this is where they finally put someone into the pumpkin house that’s been there since this game released, [27:37.000 –> 27:40.000] I believe, with nobody living in it. [27:41.000 –> 27:48.000] And I mean, it just seems like I haven’t played much since we did the episode on Disney Dreamlight Valley, [27:48.000 –> 27:56.000] but the amount of cosmetic stuff that they have been putting into the game with every release that comes out is pretty absurd. [27:56.000 –> 28:00.000] So if you haven’t played this game in a while and some of the customization was a reason why, [28:00.000 –> 28:06.000] because when it first launched, it was very light. It’s getting absurdly deep with the amount of customization. [28:06.000 –> 28:10.000] So worth jumping back into for some of that stuff. [28:10.000 –> 28:17.000] Yeah, no, absolutely. I need to get, I think I’m going to wait until the 1.0 release just because I’m like, [28:17.000 –> 28:22.000] I don’t want to actually pay money for it and I was playing on Game Pass before and my Game Pass runs out in like two weeks [28:22.000 –> 28:26.000] and I’m not paying for Game Pass just now because I have too many games as it is. [28:26.000 –> 28:31.000] So, yeah, and I was getting a bit frustrated with the streaming of it. [28:31.000 –> 28:37.000] But I think once this goes 1.0 and free to play, I am going to get lost. [28:37.000 –> 28:42.000] Yeah, we might need to do another follow-up episode once it goes 1.0 because I’m in that same bucket. [28:42.000 –> 28:46.000] Once it goes 1.0, that’s when I think I’ll be ready to jump back in. [28:46.000 –> 28:50.000] Yep, yep, yep. There aren’t many games we’ve done that for. We did it for Ooblets. [28:50.000 –> 28:54.000] We’ve done it for anything else. I don’t think we’ve done it for anything else, but I plan to do it for more. [28:54.000 –> 28:57.000] Definitely want to do it for Coral Island. Definitely wanted to do it for Dreamlight Valley. [28:58.000 –> 29:03.000] Spirit of the Island have got a new free DLC, which is interesting. [29:03.000 –> 29:08.000] So it’s a DLC because it’s like a separate thing that you get from Steam rather than just an update. [29:08.000 –> 29:15.000] But why if it’s free? I don’t understand why you would do that, but I don’t care enough to argue about it. [29:15.000 –> 29:20.000] I wonder if it’s like a little marketing thing because it’s a new product. [29:20.000 –> 29:24.000] That’s a good point. Maybe it bumps up lists and stuff like that. Could be. [29:24.000 –> 29:31.000] It’s also possible that they want to have paid DLC later and this is just like getting people used to the idea of DLC. [29:31.000 –> 29:35.000] Yeah. Either way, more free content is always good. [29:35.000 –> 29:40.000] Yep. It’s out now. Sorry, I was just adding it to my content library there because I do own the game. [29:40.000 –> 29:43.000] I don’t know if I’ve played it, but I do own it. [29:43.000 –> 29:49.000] And an update rather than the DLC because this game hasn’t hit 1.0 yet is Orange Season. [29:49.000 –> 29:56.000] The Frostfall update, which if you couldn’t figure out, adds a bunch of stuff for Autumn and Winter. [29:56.000 –> 30:00.000] I’m not sure why they called it Frostfall and then said with Autumn and Winter season. [30:00.000 –> 30:04.000] It’s like, come on, get on your consistency there. Are you going to call it Fall or are you going to call it Autumn? [30:04.000 –> 30:07.000] Although I guess Frost Autumn doesn’t really sound as good, does it? [30:07.000 –> 30:20.000] Is Orange Season… Yeah, Orange Season is kind of the Stardew Valley clone that has yet to show off anything that actually stands out as a sort of unique selling point. [30:20.000 –> 30:32.000] But it does have a better name than it originally did because this was the one that was called Fantasy Farming Orange Season and then they just changed it to Orange Season, which is an infinitely better name. [30:32.000 –> 30:35.000] It is definitely better. I will not commit to it being infinitely better. [30:35.000 –> 30:42.000] I think it’s infinitely better because Fantasy Farming Orange Season is possibly the worst name they could have chosen. [30:42.000 –> 30:55.000] Blah, blah, blah. Anything to say about this? No, it’s an early access update. If you play the game, go get it. If you don’t play the game, by now you’re probably waiting for 1.0. [30:56.000 –> 31:03.000] And if you’ve played the game and you think it’s decent, let us know because I would be interested to hear. [31:03.000 –> 31:10.000] Sometimes you look at these games and you’re like, are people just bad at advertising their product? Because many times they are, right? [31:10.000 –> 31:15.000] Particularly when it’s small indie developers and they’re not advertising, they’re just game developers. [31:15.000 –> 31:23.000] So sometimes these things, we may be overly harsh if you’ve actually played the game because we’re just looking at a trailer or something like that. [31:23.000 –> 31:27.000] And a lot of these people are not marketers by trade. Yep, absolutely. [31:27.000 –> 31:33.000] And we can’t play all the games because there are too many games, as we said before. [31:33.000 –> 31:37.000] Okay, so we’re now getting into some slightly meatier stuff. [31:37.000 –> 31:48.000] So, Grimoire Groves, I think is how it’s pronounced, their Kickstarter is now live, which means, Johnny, we actually have some information about this game now. [31:48.000 –> 31:54.000] Like I think previously it was like, oh, here’s a piece of art. And that was basically it. [31:54.000 –> 32:03.000] So they’re calling this a cozy magical gardening adventure, grow cute plants and friendships with your witch magic. [32:03.000 –> 32:07.000] And then there’s a big long Kickstarter with a whole bunch of information. [32:07.000 –> 32:14.000] They’re also saying it’s a cozy roguelite dungeon crawler, which to me feels like a contradiction in terms. [32:14.000 –> 32:22.000] Well, I agree. But looking at the trailer, it didn’t give off strong combat vibes and maybe more like exploration. [32:22.000 –> 32:32.000] I assume it’s like, you know, maybe once your mana depletes or something to that effect, then that’s when you get kicked out rather than a sort of when you die. [32:32.000 –> 32:41.000] That was the impression that I got, which I think is a really interesting take if it’s like, yeah, more exploration based roguelite rather than a combat based roguelite. [32:41.000 –> 32:49.000] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because it says a cozy roguelite dungeon crawler that will transport you to a world of wonder and excitement. [32:49.000 –> 32:59.000] In this game, you’ll play as a young witch who grows cute plant creatures and discovers the secrets of the grimoire groves, a forest inhabited by mythical creatures and powerful spirits. [32:59.000 –> 33:05.000] And it might be because it looks like the plants are walking around after you’ve grown numb. [33:05.000 –> 33:10.000] So it could be if there is combat that your plants do the combat, like maybe it’s a plants versus zombies type thing. [33:10.000 –> 33:18.000] Yeah, it’s hard to know. But what sort of stood out to me is in the Kickstarter page, they sort of list the games that they were heavily inspired by. [33:18.000 –> 33:23.000] And they list Animal Crossing, Hades, Stardew Valley, Moonlighter and Wizard of Legend. [33:23.000 –> 33:29.000] Now, I have not played Wizard of Legend, but I have played the other four games and I love all four of those games. [33:29.000 –> 33:38.000] So when I saw that, I was very excited because they’re four like quite different games to have together as your inspiration. [33:38.000 –> 33:42.000] But the fact that I like them all, I am very excited by this. [33:42.000 –> 33:54.000] Yeah, I’m definitely willing to see how it goes because Cult of the Lamb I was very suspicious of combining the kind of roguelite stuff with farming, which worked really well. [33:54.000 –> 34:01.000] But I certainly wouldn’t say that was cozy. It didn’t feel cozy. It was still stressful. That’s the thing, right? [34:01.000 –> 34:06.000] And this looks cozier than Cult of the Lamb. At least it gives off cozier vibes. [34:06.000 –> 34:12.000] Yeah, no, absolutely. I agree. Like the colour palette and all of that, it definitely screams cozy. [34:12.000 –> 34:17.000] Oh my word, there’s a massive axolotl dragon type thing. I want an axolotl dragon. [34:17.000 –> 34:18.000] That does sound amazing. [34:18.000 –> 34:20.000] His face, so derpy. [34:20.000 –> 34:32.000] Yeah, the whole vibe of this game is very cute. I haven’t back to Kickstarter in ages and I’m kind of getting tempted to back this one because it looks cool. [34:32.000 –> 34:40.000] And I know that I said I’m very over sort of the witchy magic thing in farming games, but not for this one. This one is okay. [34:40.000 –> 34:49.000] And the Kickstarter is fully funded as of recording and there’s still 30 days to go. So it’s happening. [34:49.000 –> 34:53.000] Yeah, I’ve already backed it. I backed it as soon as it went live. [34:54.000 –> 34:57.000] I found another paragraph in the Kickstarter that gives us more hints. [34:57.000 –> 35:02.000] So this game being a rogue light means that you will die a lot, right? Don’t worry. [35:02.000 –> 35:06.000] The worst thing that can happen is falling asleep after spending too much magical energy. [35:06.000 –> 35:12.000] And even if that happens, each time you play, you’ll unlock new abilities and upgrades that will help you get further on your next. [35:12.000 –> 35:19.000] So it definitely does sound like it’s more like a kind of standard rogue light than Cult of the Lamb. [35:19.000 –> 35:30.000] It doesn’t sound like you have a base that doesn’t change. It sounds like the rogue light part of it is your gaining of upgrades and new ways to do things for the next playthrough, like Hades. [35:30.000 –> 35:38.000] Yeah, but even with Hades, there was like a central hub. And you upgraded things at the hub. [35:38.000 –> 35:45.000] What does the hub look like? Does it actually mean anything or is it basically just like a glorified menu? [35:45.000 –> 35:49.000] Well, there’s lots of characters that you could interact with at the hub. [35:49.000 –> 36:01.000] Like in many respects, it was a bit of a glorified menu, but there was a lot of interaction stuff and added a lot of color and flavor to the world of Hades. [36:01.000 –> 36:07.000] So it’s definitely not fair to say it was just a menu, but like that was the primary function that it served. [36:07.000 –> 36:13.000] Like there wasn’t huge gameplay elements. It was more like after each run, here’s a five minute break before you start the next run. [36:13.000 –> 36:21.000] See, this is what I liked about Cult of the Lamb is that your hub was a farm that you were building up, right? That was the farming bit of it. [36:21.000 –> 36:29.000] And even if you died, you would respawn in your farm the way the farm was and what you lost was what you had on the journey. [36:29.000 –> 36:34.000] Whereas it sounds like this is more like your standard rogue lights like Hades and… [36:34.000 –> 36:41.000] Oh, what’s the… atomic crops? Where, yeah, sure, you have a hub, and there are people there and stuff. [36:41.000 –> 36:45.000] But the point of that is just to upgrade stuff and then keep going on your thing. [36:45.000 –> 36:52.000] Whereas Cult of the Lamb was, this is the place you’re spending most of your time, or I want to go get some stuff, let’s go out into the rogue light aspect. [36:52.000 –> 36:57.000] Well, there is a demo out, so potentially we could try and find out. [36:57.000 –> 37:01.000] Come on, Johnny, I don’t have time for demos! [37:01.000 –> 37:05.000] If I can’t make a podcast episode on it, I’m not doing it. [37:05.000 –> 37:08.000] That is entirely reasonable. [37:08.000 –> 37:15.000] Yeah, okay, cool. That’s probably enough on that one, but it looks great. I have already backed it, linked to the Kickstarter if you want it. [37:15.000 –> 37:21.000] Next, we have Fields of Mystria. So, again, this was a game we didn’t know much about before. [37:21.000 –> 37:26.000] We knew it was a farming game of some kind, but that was all we really knew. [37:26.000 –> 37:37.000] We have a trailer, and we have a lot of new stuff, so the Steam page has a bun
On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about how to introduce your children to video games, specifically RPGs.We're far away from the 1980s, back when most parents saw video games as a “fad” or “waste of time.” Instead, parents nowadays see games as a legitimate form of entertainment at worst and an art form at best. So, how should parents today introduce their children to the world of video games? Jimmy explored this question in his recent feature, A Parent's List of the Best Introductory RPGs for Kids, and we're going to dive even deeper with the help of two other parents on staff, Monica and Wes. Also, childless Jono is here to “helpfully” provide his clueless point of view on parenting!Featuring: Jono Logan, Wes Iliff, Monica Rose, James Turner; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:A Parent's List of the Best Introductory RPGs for KidsBug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling ReviewKingdom Hearts ReviewPokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl ReviewCostume Quest ReviewDragon Quest Builders ReviewMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope Review

The game was released on 28 January 2022 and was announced as part of the Pokémon 25th Anniversary event alongside Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It is that time of year again where we find this podcast celebrating a nerd holiday that wraps February: Pokémon Day. EstoBro celebrates this show with the biggest nerds around with Izzy Takamono and Rob the Noob of the 4Nerds1Podcast with TV still trying to get a hotspot from his Arc Phone. The show begins with new hot video games that are out and how the nerd collective has way too much backlog to even purchase video games right now. The Gents start focusing on the topic by giving a full review of Pokémon Legends: Arceus...however because of how much these guys love talking, they bounce around all over the place (11:35). After a good month of gameplay, the Gents know how to recognize and point out the flaws that continue to harm Game Freak's final product. This also follows with the other demands that the Pokéfans have demanded over the course of the franchise, which to EstoBro's knowledge that the answer has been resolved for some time now (18:30). More of the argument leads to Izzy Tokomono educating the masses on where Pokémon has been ripping off Digimon, the other monster collector franchise (33:45), and nerds as a whole need to be more appreciative of this other major franchise and need to give it a chance if they have not already. After breaking down other elements that make a strong franchise after trading card collecting, merchandise, and anime; EstoBro's final resolution is that there needs to be a dedicated cornerstone of the Pokemon franchise that needs to grow up with the original fans (46:40). EstoBro brings up the attention of all the accolades Pokémon made during its 25th anniversary (65:35), while the Gents make a full tailored review of what games were released for the year with NEW Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Unite, and the Gen IV remakes of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. With those titles backing the year 2021, 2022 is off to a great start with Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Gents finally make their first impression take on the Gen IX reveal of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet versions dropping by this holiday season (85:15). EstoBro celebrates the internet for being cordial for the review, which could only lead to optimism on what the future of the Pokémon franchise has to hold for fans. It was such a delight to hear the 4Nerds on podwaves once more, we hope we hear more from them on future shows in collaboration.
