Send us a textChristian, the lead singer and bassist for The Ritualists, stops by the show to discuss bass playing, the new album Too Pure to Cure, cooking, history, and more.*****NYC-based The Ritualists' upcoming album, Too Pure To Cure (out now) is a trip. Produced and mixed by GRAMMY-winner Mario J McNulty (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Prince), the album is packed with the band's signature mix of goth, glam, and modern rock, all wrapped up in their larger-than-life energy.Following their darkly danceable single "You Know Better", the band has recently released "The Wake" —a soaring, synth-heavy anthem inspired by classic ‘80s dark fantasy films (The NeverEnding Story, anyone?) and the shimmering hooks of the New Romantic era. Frontman Christian Dryden describes it as a reflection on childhood, resilience, and the ability to pull oneself out of tough situations. And it's already earned praise from The NeverEnding Story theme song's own (and fellow Reybee client) Limahl, who says:"I really like this—a little surreal, very melodic and with a video that has a classic early '80s vibe. The chorus asks, ‘Whoever wakes up?' — well, I just did, to The Ritualists!" Tracks on the album range from "King of Air," a surrealist reflection on feeling misunderstood, to "Every Thread," which juxtaposes cosmic insignificance with the universal pangs of love and envy. And of course, there's the title track, "Too Pure to Cure," which lead vocalist/songwriter Christian Dryden describes as less of a protest and more of a shoulder shrug—it's a declaration of knowing who you are and refusing to be “cured” of it. The Ritualists are Christian Dryden (vocals, bass), Jeffrey Andrew (keyboards), David Andreana (guitars), and Eric Kuby (drums). Too Pure To Cure is available on all streaming platforms today. *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. What if none of this were real, but instead we were in a simulation? What would that mean about life, about the notion of reality, and about our own existence?  From award-winning, Seattle-based author Daryl Gregory comes a story following two friends on a cross-country bus tour through glitches as they grapple with secrets, love, and family — issues that are not uncommon, except these take place in a simulated world. When We Were Real follows longtime best friends JP and Dulin. When JP finds out his cancer has aggressively returned, Dulin decides it's the perfect time for one last adventure: a week-long bus tour of the Impossibles, the glitches and geographic miracles that started cropping right after the Announcement that revealed our world to be merely a digital simulacrum. The outing promises to be the trip of a (not completely real) lifetime. Unlike other sci-fi hits like The Matrix or Vanilla Sky, these characters know they are simulations. Through this self-awareness, they — as well as readers — explore what it means to be human, to be alive or even real. Through a cast of colorful characters (like a pregnant influencer determined to make her child too famous to be deleted) or the stops they make along the way (like a tunnel outside of time or a motivational-speaking avatar's compound) JP and Dulin have no shortage of things to talk about as they venture toward the tour's final stop, where the travelers may find out who is actually running the simulation. When We Were Real aims to uncover the things that really matter in life, even in an artificial world. Daryl Gregory is the award-winning author of numerous novels, including Revelator, Afterparty, and Spoonbenders, a Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award finalist. His novella We Are All Completely Fine won the World Fantasy Award and the Shirley Jackson Award. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Matt Dinniman is a writer, artist, and musician (well, he's a bass player) from Gig Harbor, WA. He is the author of several books, including the bestselling Dungeon Crawler Carl series.   Buy the Book When We Were Real: A Novel Third Place Books

Predictive Justice or Rogue AI? A Deep Dive into Minority Report & I, Robot

Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast

In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, the hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, wrap up their month-long discussion on science fiction by delving into two early 2000s science fiction films: I, Robot (2004) and Minority Report (2002). While both films explore futuristic technology and its implications on society, they do so in fundamentally different ways. The hosts analyze their themes, effectiveness as adaptations, and how they compare in their depictions of technological advancement and moral dilemmas. The conversation also touches on their experiences with researching and watching these films, highlighting how science fiction often presents advancements with built-in flaws. This aligns with the genre's tendency to reflect real-world systemic issues and question the unintended consequences of human progress. Though Meghan expresses exhaustion from deep-diving into sci-fi for the month, both hosts agree that these films provide engaging discussions on technology's role in society.I, Robot (2004): A Blockbuster Take on Asimov's IdeasAdaptation and Source MaterialI, Robot is loosely based on Isaac Asimov's collection of short stories published between 1940 and 1950. The stories were later compiled into a single volume in 1950, unified by the perspective of Dr. Susan Calvin, a robo-psychologist at U.S. Robotics (USR). The book introduced Asimov's famous Three Laws of Robotics, foundational rules designed to govern AI and robot behavior. The film, however, takes considerable liberties with the source material, transforming it into an action-driven blockbuster. The hosts acknowledge that this shift likely contributed to mixed critical reviews. While some viewers criticized its departure from Asimov's philosophical exploration of robotics, others appreciated it as an entertaining sci-fi thriller.Film Reception and Cinematic StyleThe film holds a 57% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 70% audience score, reflecting its divisive reception. As the hosts point out, it was never meant to be a deep intellectual study of AI but rather an action film with engaging visuals. Will Smith's performance as Detective Spooner embodies the early 2000s "quippy action hero" archetype, making the film more accessible and humorous compared to more serious sci-fi adaptations.Visually, the special effects, particularly the design of the humanoid robot Sonny, hold up surprisingly well 20 years later. The film's high-budget production ($120 million) and its impressive box office return ($346 million) solidified it as a commercial success. The hosts compare it to the sleek, stylized action movies of the era, noting how it mirrors the aesthetic trends of films like The Matrix.Key Themes and ComparisonsOne of the film's central themes is AI autonomy - whether artificial intelligence can develop free will and what that means for humanity. The AI antagonist, VIKI, adheres to the Three Laws of Robotics but interprets them in a way that leads to dangerous authoritarian control, believing it must restrict human freedom to protect them from themselves. The hosts draw comparisons to more recent films like M3GAN and Subservience, both of which explore companion AI going rogue. They highlight how I, Robot predates these discussions but shares the same anxieties about AI taking over essential human roles.Minority Report (2002): A Philosophical Examination of Fate and JusticeAdaptation and Source MaterialMinority Report is based on Philip K. Dick's 1956 novella of the same name. The hosts note that while the adaptation stays true to the novella's core concepts, the film expands the world significantly, emphasizing ethical and philosophical dilemmas over action. The story revolves around "precrime," a law enforcement system that arrests individuals before they commit crimes based on predictions from three precogs - mutants with precognitive abilities. The protagonist, John Anderton (played by Tom Cruise), becomes the target of the system he upholds when the precogs foresee him committing murder.Film Reception and Cinematic StyleUnlike I, Robot, Minority Report received widespread critical acclaim, holding an 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 80% audience score. The hosts attribute its success to Steven Spielberg's direction, Tom Cruise's performance, and the deeper philosophical questions it raises about free will and determinism.Visually, the film employs a distinct overexposed aesthetic, a stylistic choice that contrasts with the darker, grimy tones typical of Philip K. Dick adaptations like Blade Runner. The hosts find this visual approach interesting but also note that it feels very "early 2000s," drawing comparisons to films like Vanilla Sky.Key Themes and ComparisonsThe ethical implications of precrime serve as the film's central focus. Can people be justly punished for crimes they haven't yet committed? The hosts discuss how the film blurs the lines between security and personal freedom, mirroring real-world discussions about surveillance and predictive policing.Unlike I, Robot, which deals with AI's potential for autonomy, Minority Report questions human agency - whether fate is predetermined or if individuals always have the capacity to choose differently. The precog Agatha insists, "There is always a choice," reinforcing the idea that no future is absolute. The hosts find this concept compelling, drawing comparisons to religious debates on predestination versus free will. One particularly interesting discussion revolves around how the precrime system can be manipulated. The film's antagonist exploits "echoes" in precognition - where a violent crime is foreseen more than once - using this loophole to commit murder. This introduces the idea that even seemingly foolproof systems have flaws that can be exploited.Comparing the Two Films: Different Approaches to Sci-Fi DilemmasAI vs. Human ControlBoth films examine the relationship between technology and human control but from different angles. I, Robot presents an AI-driven dystopia where machines gain too much control, whereas Minority Report explores how humans misuse predictive technology to justify authoritarian measures.Ethical Questions and Their Real-World RelevanceThe hosts discuss how I, Robot anticipates today's AI debates, especially with modern advancements in machine learning and robotics. The film speculates on AI's role in decision-making, much like contemporary concerns about automation and artificial intelligence shaping human lives.Meanwhile, Minority Report resonates with contemporary issues of mass surveillance and data collection. Predictive policing, which attempts to forecast crimes based on data analysis, has become a real-world practice, raising ethical concerns similar to those explored in the film.Entertainment vs. DepthWhile both films are engaging, I, Robot leans into entertainment value with its action-heavy approach, while Minority Report is more thought-provoking. The hosts agree that Minority Report offers a richer intellectual experience, but I, Robot remains a fun, visually impressive blockbuster. In ConclusionThe discussion concludes with reflections on how both films remain relevant today. I, Robot speaks to AI ethics, while Minority Report highlights the dangers of overreliance on predictive technology. The hosts note that while the sci-fi genre often exaggerates technological advancements, many of its concerns are now reality, making these films valuable cultural texts. As the sci-fi month ends, Meaghan and Arthur appreciate the genre's ability to provoke thought and entertain. They hint at upcoming podcast topics, including a more relaxed approach to book discussions for February. Their enthusiasm for future sci-fi explorations suggests that their interest in speculative storytelling remains strong while this month's theme is over.

Filmmaker Pascal Plante (director of Red Rooms, one of our favorite movies of the year) joins to discuss Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar's 1996 debut, Thesis. While riveting simply at the topical level of its tense genre thrills, the movie also metatextually concerns itself with the moving image as a mediated reflection of our corporeal realities, the push-pull of commercialism and artistry, and the ethics of satisfying a violent culture's sublimated desires for shocking, exploitative imagery. We discuss Amenábar's preternatural capacity behind the camera; how his ability to mystify with the language of cinema allows viewers to recognize their complicity in the film's graphic scenarios as spectators while never sacrificing the raw thrills of moviegoing. Then, citing Michael Haneke's writing, we discuss the nature of violence in media, the responsibilites of the artist, and the morbid concept of mindless entertainment. Now, that lost documentary is arriving for the first time in cinemas. The Oscar-winning director joins Tom to discuss his first film, his early life as a rock journalist, his upcoming Joni Mitchell biopic, and how Neil Young was originally cast in “Almost Famous.”

There's a line from the movie Vanilla Sky that I've always loved. It's when Tom Cruise's character realizes: “The little things... There's nothing bigger, is there?” That's often true in attraction too. So many people are looking for the huge epiphany, instead of the subtle-yet-powerful changes to their behavior that can skyrocket their results. As you'll learn in this episode, making a deeper connection doesn't have to be complicated. We'll highlight the top 5 New York landmarks featured in movies, then delve into Spike Lee's powerful drama 25th Hour (2002), followed by a nostalgic look at the animated series Gargoyles.Top 5 New York Landmarks in Movies:Statue of Liberty - Featured in countless films, the Statue of Liberty is perhaps most memorably portrayed in Planet of the Apes (1968), where it delivers one of cinema's most iconic final shots.Empire State Building - A symbol of New York's skyline, this building stars in King Kong (1933) where the giant ape climbs it, creating one of the most enduring images in film history.Central Park - Central Park is a versatile backdrop in films like When Harry Met Sally (1989), offering a slice of nature amidst the urban environment, perfect for pivotal scenes.Times Square - Captured vibrantly in Vanilla Sky (2001), Times Square is depicted in its full, chaotic glory, often symbolizing the energy and pulse of the city.Brooklyn Bridge - This landmark is crucial in films like Once Upon a Time in America (1984), where it not only serves as a scenic backdrop but also as a symbol of transition and connection.Directed by Spike Lee, 25th Hour follows the last day of freedom for Montgomery Brogan (Edward Norton) before he starts a seven-year prison sentence. Set against the post-9/11 New York backdrop, the film not only explores personal redemption and despair but also captures the mood of a city in trauma. It's a poignant examination of choices, consequences, and the human capacity for adaptation.Switching gears to a lighter, yet still poignant narrative, Gargoyles is an animated series that beautifully blends mythical elements with modern settings. Set in New York City, the show features ancient creatures adapting to the 20th century and protecting the city that mirrors their castle of old. It's renowned for its dark tone and complex storylines, unusual for a children's cartoon.Whether you're a fan of dramatic tales of personal reckoning or animated adventures that blend history with fantasy, today's episode offers a rich exploration of New York City's iconic presence in cinema and television. Tune in as we traverse from real city streets to animated skylines, uncovering the stories that make New York a perennial favorite in storytelling.

News and Notes About "A Very Merry Mix-Up" This movie originally premiered on November 10, 2013. Jonathan Wright directed “A Very Merry Mix-Up” and it was his second directorial project for Hallmark. He has since gone on to direct a total of 23 movies, a majority of them for Hallmark which include “True Justice: Family Ties,” “A Not So Royal Christmas” and “Family History Mysteries: Buried Past” as of recently. Barbara Kymlicka wrote the script. She currently has 67 writing credits and has written many Hallmark and Lifetime movies. The last couple of projects Kymlicka wrote included last year's “The Secret Gift of Christmas” and all four episodes of “The Love Club.” Alicia Witt stars as Alice. Witt has a staggering 90 acting credits which started in 1984 at the age of 7. She has appeared in the TV series “Cybill,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Nashville.” She is not only a TV actress, she's appeared in theatrical movies like “Vanilla Sky” and “Two Weeks Notice.” Fun fact: Witt is a professional singer-songwriter and pianist. She released two Christmas songs in 2020 that appeared in a Hallmark movie she starred in called “Christmas Tree Lane.” In 2023, she appeared on “The Masked Singer” but was sadly eliminated after the second episode. Mark Wiebe plays Matt Mitchum. He has 16 previous acting credits including appearances in the TV series “Nikita” and “The Handmaid's Tale.” This movie was his second project for Hallmark, having previously appeared in the 2011 movie “Christmas Magic” as the waiter. Scott Gibson plays fiancé Will Mitchum. Gibson currently has 69 acting credits with appearances in a bunch of Lifetime movies like “The Perfect Stalker,” “My Mom's Darkest Secrets” and “My Husband's Worst Mistake.” Susan Hogan plays not-future-mother-in-law Penny. Hogan has 129 acting credits, recently appearing in “Tipline Mysteries: Dial 1 for Murder.” Lawrence Dane play Matt's grandpa Charles. Having appeared in 150 projects, this 2013 movie was the second to last on his resume. Dane passed in March 2022 at the age of 84. Mimi Kuzyk plays Will's mom Judith. With 141 acting credits, Kuzyk has appeared in “Hill Street Blues,” “Blue Murder,” “Workin' Moms,” and “UnREAL” - to name a few.  According to IMDB, the role of Alice was originally written for Jennifer Lopez. We continue our Camp Cinema season in our fourth episode covering To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) and Magnolia (1999)Special Guest: Returning Guest, Rotten Tomato approved film critic, Natasha Alvar from Cultured VulturesWhen watching To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, there is an overriding sense of what could have been. Coming out in the mid 1990s, a surprisingly much more open time in American culture, Wong Foo went to number one at the box office. It was a modest hit, but clearly well received by the general public. If this movie was made today, everyone involved would get more death threats than residuals checks. Culture doesn't always move forward, sometimes it backslides.Magnolia is a controversial pick for Camp Cinema. To me, it is the paradigm of what Susan Sontag called Naive Camp in her 1964 essays Notes on Camp. Magnolia is a manically ambition film with a passionate and serious tone. Paul Thomas Anderson, like Cameron Crowe in Vanilla Sky, strived to reach the artistic heavens, but all he did was take on a tour of the sad and lonely people of the San Fernando Valley. Chris and Natasha offer some good counterpoints to my stance.

We continue our Camp Cinema season in our third episode covering Sugar and Spice (2001) and Vanilla Sky (2002)Special Guest: Good friend and frequent guest, MollyThe early Aughts was a bizarre time in American culture. The heady surge of the late 90s into Y2K was quicky benzo'd by 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our two selections for the 2000s were written and produced before the big comedown, and they both definitely have a "we can do anything" vibe. Sugar and Spice deftly somersaulted through the byzantine development process at New Line Cinema, who were likely distracted by their massive production of Lord of the Rings trilogy at the time. What could have easily been a teen movie cash-in is a rather spunky, satirical, and fun mess. Does it work? No, but it is sassy enough to not care. Vanilla Sky is not fun. Here Cameron Crowe's grandiose vision was blinded by his fiery ambition. Coming off his best film, Almost Famous, Crowe decided to tackle a remake of Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 Spanish film Abre Los Ojos. Vanilla Sky does not align with the traditional definition of camp, but it certainly seems to be the bullseye of what Susan Sontag called Naive Camp. It is a film so devoutly serious about something so frivolously stupid.

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Guitarist and songwriter Nancy Wilson is one half of the rock band Heart, along with her older sister Ann Wilson. Nancy and Ann have been the face of the band since the mid-70s. Heart's first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released in 1976 right as the band was making traction opening for big acts like Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees. Soon their songs, like “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You,” started to take off in the States, and Heart quickly became a headlining act. Nearly 50 years since their debut album, Heart has experienced career highs—like a string of chart-topping hits and an induction into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame—as well as their fair share of personal and professional adversity. Today Ann and Nancy remain steadfast in continuing Heart's legacy. This month they embarked on a world tour—their first in five years. To celebrate Ann and Nancy Wilson's massive contribution to rock n roll history, we will feature conversations with both sisters over the next two weeks. Today we'll hear Leah Rose talk to Nancy about how the popular drugs of the ‘70s and ‘80s influenced Heart's sound. She also describes how being accepted by the musicians of Seattle's grunge scene helped her overcome Heart's fraught experience recording power ballads in the ‘80s. And she describes the lo-fi setup she used to score the soundtracks of her ex-husband Cameron Crowe's hit movies: Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry McGuire. This week, Drusilla and Josh discuss Lucio Fulci's gloopy, grody classic, The Beyond (1981). From wiki: “The Beyond (Italian: …E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà, lit. "… And you will live in terror! The afterlife") is a 1981 Italian Southern Gothic[6][7] supernatural horror film directed by Lucio Fulci. It is based on an original story created by Dardano Sacchetti, starring Catriona MacColl and David Warbeck. Its plot follows a woman who inherits a hotel in rural Louisiana that was once the site of a horrific murder, and which may be a gateway to hell. It is the second film in Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy after City of the Living Dead (1980), and was followed by The House by the Cemetery (1981).[8]”  But first, Josh watched Krull (1983) and Death Walks at Midnight (1972). Drusilla watched some mainstream hits, including Vanilla Sky (2001.) They discuss all things Cameron Crowe, The Sentinel, The Evil Dead, Bridget Fonda, and do some horror gossiping.  NEXT WEEK: And Soon the Darkness  Follow them across the internet: Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/ Joshua Conkel https://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/
