HEAVY Music Interviews
Unfinished Business With BEN BARLOW From NECK DEEP

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2025 17:54

Interview by Kris PetersIn the little over a decade since Neck Deep formed in the Barlow brothers' spare room in Wrexham, Wales, a lot has changed. From the scrappy, naively hopeful beginnings that define the starting of so many teenage bands, the pop-punks have gone on to be one of British Rock music's most successful global exports in recent memory: top 5 records in both the US and UK, global touring, viral hits and over a billion streams just some of the fruits of ten years spent mastering their craft. For the new self-titled record, the band, completed by Ben's older brother and bassist Seb, guitarists Matt West and Sam Bowden and drummer Matt Powles, took ‘doing their own thing' – and only their own thing – to the next level. Eschewing a keen list of collaborators and producers eager to work with one of rock's hottest properties and choosing, instead, to write and record in their own warehouse space, mere miles from where they grew up. Old school, just like it used to be.This April Australian fans get to taste the excitement, when Neck Deep return for The Dumbstruck Dumbf!*k Tour with special guests Albany New York pop punk act State Champs.HEAVY caught up with Neck Deep vocalist Ben Barlow for an entertaining chat ahead of the tour. It's been a couple of years since their last visit, so we start off by asking what has changed with Neck Deep since then."Not much, I don't think," he measured. "But we're very settled into this record, very settled into playing these songs live now. We're approaching the - or I think we're in the 10-year anniversary year of our seminal breakout record, Life's Not Out To Get You. And so, yeah, doing little bits and bobs with that and just planning ahead for the future still, you know, thinking forward even to the next record. Getting the ball moving with that."Then Barlow was struck with a sudden realization he may have forgotten something important."Oh, actually, what's changed?" he asked me in return. "Bloody hell, I got married this year, which is very nice (laughs)!"In the full interview, we discussed Neck Deep's upcoming tour in Australia, set to begin on April 21, while reflecting on their experiences since their last visit. Ben shared insights into the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of their breakout album Life's Not Out To Get You. He highlighted the band's positive dynamics and their excitement for new music, acknowledging the need to promote their self-titled album while also focusing on future projects. The conversation touched on their writing process, with Ben noting that they prefer to create music at home but are open to inspiration while on the road.We also delved into the song Dumbstruck Dumbfuck, which Ben described as a humorous take on modern masculinity and relationships. They emphasized the high-energy yet sentimental nature of Neck Deep's live performances, expressing enthusiasm about touring with State Champs due to their close friendship and compatible musical styles, and more.Full interview www.youtube.com/@HEAVYmagazineBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Robert Coyle and Alex Stewart of Mascots! Established in 2014, Mascots is a pop-punk band from Cincinnati, Ohio. Over the years, they've shared the stage with the likes of Hot Mulligan, Tiny Moving Parts, Everyone Leaves, Microwave, Life Lessons, A Story Told, and A Will Away, among others. In 2017, they also won the opportunity to play the main stage at the Vans Warped Tour in Cincinnati alongside the likes of Beartooth, Neck Deep, and Hands Like Houses. In 2016, Mascots released their debut EP entitled Nothing To Lose, which was followed by EPs The Good In Me and Time To Time in 2017. Both The Good In Me and Time To Time were recorded with Seth Henderson (Real Friends, Homesafe, Knuckle Puck) at Always Be Genius Recording Studio. Since that time, Mascots has persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic, and continued to release and work on new music. In April, they dropped a new single entitled "Slipping In The Dark," alongside an accompanying music video. Mascots followed up that release with their latest single "Vertigo," which dropped in May. On June 28th, Mascots is set to release their new EP entitled Bad News on a Beautiful Day.  On this episode, Robert and Alex talk with Mike about how they got into music, Mascots' formation and Cincy roots, developing their sound, working with Seth Henderson, what it was like getting to play the main stage at Warped Tour in Cincinnati, persevering through the pandemic, the resurgence of pop-punk and emo, and more. This episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman also features the aforementioned "Vertigo" from Mascots, available where you get your music! Follow Mascots on Instagram @mascotsoh. We had the pleasure of interviewing Real Friends over Zoom video!Illinois-based band REAL FRIENDS have released their brand new EP 'There's Nothing Worse Than Too Late' out now via Pure Noise Records. The EP, features previously released singles 'Tell Me You're Sorry' and 'Always Lose', was produced by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, Neck Deep) and mixed by Kris Crummett (The Callous Daoboys, Knuckle Puck.)Speaking about the new EP the band said "‘There's Nothing Worse Than Too Late' was written and recorded over the last year and half. We went back to some of our earlier influences for it. When writing, we kept referencing more timeless bands like The Starting Line, Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World and many others. It has always been important for us to write songs that are timeless, but that was in the front of our minds more than ever when compiling TNWTTL. We want our fans to go back and listen to these songs in five or ten years and still feel something. Lyrically it touches on depression, death, cutting long lasting ties for good and many other heavy subject matters. At the end of it all, if our fans feel less alone because of these songs then it's a success in our eyes."The band spoke on the latest single from the EP and said "‘Six Feet' is a song about longing to be loved and appreciated while you're still here. I always see and hear good things said about people after something bad happens to them or after they pass away. I think we all need reminders to appreciate our loved ones that are alive, healthy and right in front of us. This song is that reminder to ourselves and our fans."About Real Friends:For as much as the world has changed since Real Friends first emerged in 2010, the band's mission hasn't. They continue to bleed without apology and write songs that make it okay to feel everything: the ups, the downs, and anything else in between. Rather than shy away from emotion, the group runs right towards it with distortion cranked and hearts opened, tightening their careful distillation of pop and punk on each subsequent release. When the band—Dave Knox [lead guitar], Kyle Fasel [bass], Eric Haines [rhythm guitar], and Brian Blake [drums]—welcomed vocalist Cody Muraro in 2020, the goal stayed the same as they crafted new music for Pure Noise Records.Over the years, Real Friends has forged and strengthened a deep connection with fans. The group's 2014 full-length debut, Maybe This Place Is the Same and We're Just Changing, marked a turning point. Rock Sound named it one of the “Top 50 Albums of the Year.” 2016's The Home Inside My Head maintained this momentum with further acclaim and sold-out shows. In 2018, Composure incited applause from Music Connection, Alternative Press, Substream Magazine, New Noise, and Billboard who described it as “raw.” To date, they've also amassed over 100 million streams and counting. We want to hear from you!
