October 19, 2022 - Season 13, Episode 34 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about the latest news concerning the Pittsburgh Steelers and that includes talking about recent transactions, injuries, and other topical subjects. We spend extra time talking about rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett being expected to start Sunday night against the Miami Dolphins.Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly press conference on Tuesday and as usual, Alex and I parse all the key talking points to come out of that. We talk about Tomlin's comments on the alleged Week 4 locker room incident between quarterback Mitch Trubisky and wide receiver Diontae Johnson. We also talk about a few other things that Tomlin commented on during his presser. Will the Steelers make any trades before the deadline? We discuss that hot topic once again in the middle of this show. We also talk about wide receiver Calvin Austin III possibly playing on Sunday night against the Dolphins. We quickly cover a few things that defensive tackle Cameron Heyward had to say during his latest podcast episode.Alex and I then move on to talk more about the Steelers' Sunday win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the heels of us both fully digesting the all-22 tape from that contest. We spend a lot of time talking about the defense before moving on to the offensive side of the football. We spend extra time discussing one throw that Pickett did not make on Sunday on the heels of former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch saying that he made the right decision not to. We discuss running game on offense from Sunday and more. After grinding up the tape from Sunday's win quite a bit, Alex and I move forward to answer several more questions we received from listeners via the email machine.

FOOTBALL FRIDAY dress rehearsal. The Steelers play the Lions on Sunday in the preseason finale. Mitch Trubisky will start. What are we expecting? Mike Tomlin said Najee Harris and every healthy starter will play. The guys hate the idea of Harris getting carries and touches. Do we need to see any of the bigtime regulars like Harris, TJ Watt, Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick?  Former Steeler Charlie Batch joined the show. Even while impressing, Charlie isn't ready to make Kenny Pickett the starting quarterback because of his lack of work with the starting receivers/tight end. Charlie said outside of injury, the only thing that would get Kenny into QB1 for week one is if Mitch Trubisky absolutely bombs in the game on Sunday. Charlie talked about how this change of scenery for Trubisky is worth seeing to the end. Charlie referenced the time in 2010 when Ben Roethlisberger was out for the first 4 games and there was a QB room featuring Charlie, Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon. The guys asked Charlie about the stars playing in the game on Sunday and how smart of a move it is. Charlie walked through the QB rotation for Sunday and said Mason Rudolph could see the entire second half to showcase his skills for a potential Steelers trade partner.  Some fireworks from today's Fan Morning Show.

Josh thinks the market could still be out there for Rudolph because he has impressed in the preseason and camp. On the offensive line, Josh said if Kendrick Green wasn't drafted in an early round, he would not be on this team in a few weeks. It seems that Mason Cole is the only member of the offensive line that hasn't been a complete disaster through two preseason games. 57 - The Pro's Weigh in on NCAA's NIL Guidelines with TJ Lang and Charlie Batch

Mentors and Moguls Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2022 40:17

In this episode, I sit down with former pro and college football players, Charlie Batch, TJ Lang, and Brett Petersmark to discuss the big debate around NIL (name, image, and likeness) in NCAA sports. The NIL is an agreement set by the NCAA for student-athletes to have the right to monetize and profit from their brand, which consists of their name, image, and likeness. College athletes can sign sponsorship deals with corporate brands that charge money for autographs and even create their brand or an E-commerce site.  Inside of the discussion of the NIL, there are several smaller issues that exist, such as “Girls vs. Boys.” When it comes down to it, it is better for the girls because the funding for females is not equal to the males and thus NIL allows for opportunities to open up for females. Some of the issues are, for example, that if you get a sponsorship from a specific corporation, you can't show up wearing their brand. It's very difficult for athletes because they're not allowed to use one image or logo that everybody associates with you and their popularity and fame.  Additionally, TJ mentions that Universities have beer advertisers but restrict athletes from ever consuming it. The NCAA has no choice but to try to get involved and regulate it at some level. They always try to have this moral ground right where it's no gambling, no casinos, no liquor, no beverages, but pretty much every university has some sponsorship.  In regard to recruitment, there is a portal for recruiters where players can put their names in, and the recruiters can decide to recruit you. The system allows players to get one transfer without sitting out the rest of the season.  For Charlie, the NIL would have made his life much easier after high school and college. The paradigm shift wasn't about money because he could have decided based on how he was compensated. He says he would have been able to help his family financially. Charlie also identifies that there is a lot of a gray area in the recruitment aspects for bigger schools. Some athletes play for bigger schools and then transfer to minor schools because they want to pursue a specific academic program that the bigger school doesn't have. That is just one of the loopholes that is happening with universities right now.  TJ says the NIL will keep growing until something boils over.  Student-athletes could end up earning millions of dollars! Links: Charlie Batch: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charliebatch/ https://www.instagram.com/charliebatch16/ TJ Lang: https://twitter.com/TJLang70 Brett Petersmark: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brett-petersmark-89a257a/   Things you'll learn: How the NIL Agreement affect today's student-athletes What opportunities the NIL Agreement brings to student-athletes How the Recruitment Process for Student-Athletes has Evolved How student-athletes can take advantage of the NIL Agreement
