Marianne North (1830-1890) was an English Victorian botanical artist. At a time when Victorian women were encouraged to stay home, Marianne traveled across the globe, painting plants in their natural habitats.   For Further Reading: Things you should know about Marianne North The Radical Victorian Lady behind an Essential Collection of Botanical Art Turning Loss and Loneliness into Wonder: How the Victorian Visionary Marianne North Revolutionized Art and Science with Her Botanical Paintings This month, we're pulling back the curtain to reveal women overlooked in their own lifetimes or in our historical accounts of the eras in which they lived. We're talking about the activists, thinkers, leaders, artists, and innovators history has forgotten. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more.  Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures.  Womanica was created by Liz Kaplan and Jenny Kaplan, executive produced by Jenny Kaplan, and produced by Grace Lynch, Maddy Foley, Brittany Martinez, Edie Allard, Lindsey Kratochwill, Adesuwa Agbonile, Carmen Borca-Carrillo, Taylor Williamson, Sara Schleede, Paloma Moreno Jimenez, and Abbey Delk. I'm pleased to present one of our finest productions on the topic of unschooling. An important thread running through this conversation: the benefits of unschooling in terms of relationship with self, with family and with people in the community. Pam Laricchia is the creator of the blog livingjoyfully.ca - an amazing, well-organized resource for people exploring how to live and learn without school. She is also the author of several books on unschooling, including The Unschooling Journey: A Field Guide. Pam began unschooling with her three children back in 2002 and she has continued her enthusiastic exploration through blogging, podcasting and presenting at conferences. PAM'S UNSCHOOLING BACKGROUND * Pam's new Book What is Unschooling? The mission of her site. * What does unschooling mean to you? We focus on relationship with self and with others. * Pam's Background, her personal deschooling process, her family's transition to unschooling, what did her goals look like when she started? FOR PEOPLE EXPLORING OR STARTING UNSCHOOLING * What are the important foundations of unschooling? * How to nurture Curiosity, Being Open to Our Child's Wonder * How to foster an engaged mind, main three characteristics of real and effective learning (from your article Curious and Engaged) CHALLENGES/CONCERNS ABOUT UNSCHOOLING * the process of deschooling * How to develop and maintain the patience and proper mindset for unschooling * Mediating conflicting needs, between parent and child/children * Plus A Listener question - Thanks Jahaira! "The main idea that comes to mind is the topic of TRUST. As a parent, you want your children to have everything they need to thrive, and it's scary to leave it to "chance". It's scary to fully TRUST that they will learn what they need to learn of their own volition and of their own desire..." The Gentle Rebel Podcast
Suffering Too Much Carefulness (for the wrong reasons?)

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2017 42:15

Carefulness is an interesting thing to consider. It's possible that we can be too careful at times. I recently saw an interview with Donald Miller in which he described how carefulness can be a negative by-product of success. When he writes a book he becomes aware of the critics, as well as the pressure to live up to all the 5 star reviews from previous work. As a result he feels compelled towards carefulness because it suddenly seems like there is a lot to lose. So he would remove the fun and playful voice that was a part of what ironically created the original success, choosing instead to become careful and attempting to people please. Are you being too careful in certain areas of life? Procrastination may often come from success. What takes you there is an element of carelessness and freedom, but once you feel the pressure of expectation and a fear of disappointing people, procrastination can halt action. Of course carefulness has its place in life. It protects us from many dangers, it keeps us away from the cliff edge in many respects. But it can also keep us from acting on the things we believe in and want our lives to reflect. It can lead to procrastination that stops us from doing and being what we feel pulsing away in our deepest beings. So how can we tell if we're caught in the trap of carefulness? It can take many forms and look like a whole range of different things: Procrastinate When it Comes to Meaningful Action Feel Very Aware of The People Who are Watching, and Wonder How they Will React Think About Criticism and Are Willing to Change What You're Doing Are On The Lookout for Ways to Fit In, Rather Than Ways to Be More Yourself Want to Replicate Something From Your Past Rather than Exploring New Territory Don't be cruel. In many respects people love real carelessness, but only if it comes from a big heart. They don't want to feel manipulated, and they don't want to feel judged. Anything else is kind of open for experimentation. Donald Trump is an example of someone who became popular through his carelessness. Even those who don't like him, do enjoy the fact he's not careful. There is something compelling about him, something that people cannot take their eyes off. Don Miller says that the key to carelessness is to be kind rather than cruel. It's to have grace and positive intent. To mean well even if you don't always make great decisions. This is where Trump has found himself floudering. I imagine you know someone for whom you question, “how does he get away with that when someone else would get fired?" It comes down to integrity to oneself. If you pretend to be perfect and gaff then it costs. It you admit your non-perfection then it's a hell of a lot easier. No one believes we're that great, so if we're ourselves, non-judgemental, kind, and authentic, then no one is looking for you to mess up. The best way to ensure grace for your own slip ups is to be gracious to others when they make their own slip ups along the way. Over to You Are you being too careful? Do you recognise any of these signs in your own life and work? I'd love to hear your thoughts, please leave your response in the comments below.

This week our hosts discuss one million better names for a costume store than "Ethan's Costume Shoppe," Buffy's wonderfully concerning turn-of-the-century society lady accent, and all the things Spike could accomplish with a gang of demon children. For more Hot Chicks With[out] Superpowers you should check out:  Haley must obviously recommend you all start watching "Xena: Warrior Princess" She promises to call out all of the crossover Buffy/Xena references (there are so many guys). Also not to throw shade, but Xena did premier before BTVS the show. Emily wants to plug the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and their continued fight against wage discrimination. They've won far more international acclaim and generate more revenue than the men's soccer team but still seem to somehow make less... WONDER HOW. This New York Times article breaks it down: http://www.nyti.ms/28J6HRk  Hannah is reminding you all of one of the greatest Halloween movies "Hocus Pocus" and Bette Midler's flawless performance (along with all the other witchy ladies).
