Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2022 54:25 Very Popular

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians who both suffer from the effects of LSD—that's lead singer disease—Stuart Murdoch and Ramesh Srivastava. Ramesh was and is now again the lead singer and chief creative force behind the Austin, Texas band Voxtrot, which burned bright but maybe too quick in the early 2000s. They released a series of rapturously received EPs and one LP that were beloved by fans of deeply British institutions like Sarah Records and The Smiths. But the band had split by 2010, and Ramesh went on to release a pair of solo albums that didn't quite have the impact his band did. For a while, he was content to leave Voxtrot in the past, but gathering material for two reissues gave him the spark to get thing going again. The next few months will see the release of both Early Music—which gathers the band's beloved EPs—and Cut from the Stone, which features rarities and B-sides. And then, like some unstoppable force of nature, Voxtrot will tour the U.S. again. Dates can be found at voxtrot.net. And in case you're not familiar, here's a great Voxtrot song called “The Start of Something.” Do you hear a bit of Belle and Sebastian in that song? They're a pretty clear influence on Voxtrot, and Srivastava met Stuart Murdoch while living in Glasgow in his younger days—you'll hear about their meet-cute in this conversation. Belle and Sebastian, of course, have had an incredible career over the past quarter century or so. They started life as a school project for Murdoch, a shy young man whose feelings spilled out into his gentle songs in a way that seemed then—and now—to be almost magical. Over the years, Belle and Sebastian developed from a sort of bedroom-pop project to a massive pop machine, while never losing that spirit of playfulness and sincerity that Murdoch has always projected. The band recently released their ninth studio album, called A Bit of Previous. The title is a bit tricky in that it seems to reference the good old days but also Murdoch's longtime interest in Buddhism, which he explored in greater depth during the pandemic. In this conversation, you'll actually hear a bit about how both Ramesh and Stuart approach spirituality, both Christianity and Buddhism. You'll hear how being a “gay brown person” pushed Ramesh away from religion for a long time. They talk about the aforementioned “lead singer disease,” and how that affects everyday life. And we get to hear about a young Stuart Murdoch making his way to the London flat of one of his musical heroes, but then deciding not to actually knock on his door. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ramesh Srivastava and Stuart Murdoch for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite social channels and check out talkhouse.com for lots of great written pieces, too. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time.

He quotes his therapist when describing his latest album. It's a conflict of external vs. internal wanderlust. Ramesh Srivastava spent the last several years exploring the former, but Eternal Spring charts his time with the latter. His second solo record since the dissolution of indie darlings Voxtrot finds the singer getting deeply personal in a way that didn't come naturally in his earlier career. He's spent the years working on music, waiting tables and getting to know himself. It makes for a good conversion, and Srivastava is eager to discuss it.

In what is now a yearly tradition, EPISODE #61 of Random Old Records is a special 5/10/15/20 edition. For a little over an hour, I jump into the time machine and travel back to 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 to take a look around and sample the top jams of those particular years! This time, I start off in 1997 with the stone-cold classic title track from Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out LP. Then, you'll hear a selection of 97's finest pop-punk and emo from the Get Up Kids and Promise Ring. Zipping right along to 2002, there's ripping punk from the Buff Medways and Idlewild, then a jump into 2007 for some rough and raw garage rock from The Ponys, Willowz, and Blitzen Trapper, before ending up in 2012 with Best Coast and Gentleman Jesse. Today marks the first episode of the newish format focusing more on my guests' childhoods, and I couldn't have asked for a better guest, the wonderful musician and writer Larry Livermore. Originally from Detroit, Larry began to get involved with the San Francisco punk scene in the late 1970s. After playing in a number of bands, he co-founded Lookout! Records in 1987 which was the home of numerous bands including Green Day, Op Ivy and Rancid. Larry's also written for Maximum Rocknroll, Punk Planet, and most recently Don Giovanni Records published his memoirs Spy Rock Memories.A few weeks ago, Larry stopped by my Harlem studio and we got in deep about childhood enemies, learning not to be a smart aleck, stories from WWII and The Depression, autos as status symbols, working class consciousness and being on the run from the FBI in late '60s NYC. Plus, in the epilogue, I learn about current day warzone-ish Detroit from my fiancee, stand-up Naomi Ekperigin.A big thanks, btw, to Matt Cohen and Eric Silver for their thoughts on how to further develop the show!Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava  of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Ah yes, the Hypecast, so called because some of the discussion on the Chvrches thread made me think about what it is I really dislike about the concept of hype, and why I mistrust it. It's an area where I struggle to be consistent, honestly. I abhor hype, but I seem to recall being very much caught up in the mystery and excitement around Silver Columns, for example. And I spend most of the Rough Guide to Self-releasing an Album exhorting bands to be more prepared and more organised, and yet I get funny when bands are too organised, and start wondering if they're really there to be a band or just want to get famous. And then I get annoyed at people getting too excited about the excitement itself, but would still accept that it's probably the most effective way for a DIY band on a tight budget to actually generate basic levels of awareness when they can't afford to carpet-bomb the world into submission with PR like major label bands often do. And then there's always the far more traditional and straightforward old chestnuts that I hate feeling press-ganged into liking something because I just a bloody contrarian, whether the crowd are right or not, and of course that I am always mortally offended when other people are Wrong About Music.  So many opinions out there, and none of them correct except mine - it's a heavy burden to bear, I promise you! 01. Today on Snacky Tunes, Darin and Greg Bresnitz are in the studio with Ramesh Srivastava, formerly of Voxtrot and now making music under the moniker Ramesh. Tune in to hear about songwriting, collaborating with other musicians, and the recording process. Ramesh discusses working on music after Voxtrot, and the dangers of taking a career in music for granted. Also, Luke Jackson and Justin Warner from Do or Dine come in and talk about starting a restaurant in Bed Stuy. Hear about Do or Die’s love of puns, pickle back balls, and deep-fried deviled eggs. This episode was sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “Pickle-backs are much older than the fad would suggest. It’s a cowboy drink. It was a pro-active medicinal approach to avoiding a hangover and also a way to mask the taste of the [bad] whiskey at the time.” –Luke Jackson of Do or Dine on Snacky Tunes

So yeah, Random Old Records Podcast has been coming out like clockwork every second Wednesday of the month for like a year or so now, but my plans got derailed in the last few days. I had the playlist finalized on Sunday, then came home from work on Monday to find that my computer had taken a dump. LAME! After a couple hours of shopping online and several more hours of staring at progress bars, I had a brand new machine loaded with jams and cracked software and whatnot, so here's Random Old Records Podcast #34, approximately a day late and eight hundred dollars short. It's got roughly an hour of my favorite songs from the past month, and I'm hoping at least some of you faithful readers and listeners will enjoy them, too.Last month, I spoke a bit about being bored with new music, and judging by the stuff coming out lately, it seems like bands across the land are feeling the same way. My ears have gotten burned out by listening to nothing but lo-fi garage rock for awhile, and after hearing like fifty bands dealing in sounds of the sixties and seventies, the only logical place to go is the eighties. I just can't get down with all those sweater-vested weiners aping Talking Heads, but bands ripping off Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and The Cure get an immediate pass in my book. So this episode features a ton of classic tracks from the eighties by The Sound, The Comsat Angels, and Morrissey's band, along with songs by The Fresh And Onlys, Voxtrot, and Pernice Brothers that remind me of that post-punk time when bands slowed down and got all jangly and noisy and weird.Speaking of new music and old music, Captured Tracks has become my favorite label of the last few months. On this episode, you'll hear tunes from Soft Metals, Widowspeak, and Hoop Dreams, which bring back the sounds of the late eighties so perfectly that listening to their records might put you into a time warp. If you like dark dance, gothic country, or nervy college kid pop, then you're gonna love this stuff as much as I do. That Mike Sniper guy has a singular vision for his label that rivals Tony Wilson in his prime. Believe it!If you're a bit confused and are thinking "Well damn, I started listening to Random Old Records because it has a bunch of crazy garage rock n' roll jams every month" then I've got you covered, too. Random Old Records #34 finishes up with the best feral garage pop I've heard in the past month from the new Black Lips LP, The Happy Thoughts, Apache Dropout, and more! This one goes all over the place and back again, and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had putting it together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Before his recent Dallas show, I had the chance to pull Red aside for an expansive interview and an impromptu recording session, which resulted in two single-mic performances of some of his most beloved songs, "Red Sun" from Peter and the Wolf and Adventure from MTV2's Wonder Showzen.Red Hunter isn't like most musicians I've talked with over the last year. Maybe that's because he's so willing to ponder, detail, even perform, his many diverse interests. He will tell you about playing shows in graveyards and dressing up like a Vet for a case study in audience reaction. He will tell you about jokingly suggesting he and a peer tour in a sailboat. He will cite Chomsky and address the perils of media propaganda and, in a twist, tie it all -- and convincingly so -- to independent music. He will offer perspectives, ideas, and insights that only hint at why he's one of the more compelling figures in underground music Peter and the Wolf - Red Sun (IndieInterviews) (mp3) Red Hunter - Adventure (Wonder Showzen cover) (Indie Interviews exclusive mp3) Upcoming Peter and the Wolf Dates7.06 San Diego, Scolari's Office7.07 Los Angeles, The Echo7.08 Los Angeles, Il Corral7.09 San Francisco, Hotel Utah 7.12 Portland, Towne Lounge 7.13 Seattle, S.S. Band/Artist: Ramesh Srivastava (Voxtrot)Date: April 21th, 2006 Venue: 95 Corolla Studios Location: Denton, TX Taped by: Garrison R.Transferred by: Garrison R.Setlist1. Shayla (Blondie Cover)After interviewing the band in January and seeing their performances in Dallas and in Austin at SXSW, I stayed in touch. As they entered Denton on this past Friday (after a day of uncertainty caused by van problems), we were discussing a follow-up interview and also a possible song request for that night's concert at Hailey's. I had suggested "Union City Blue" since it's one of my favorite songs off Eat to the Beat. It was a song Ramesh was familiar with but not possible for the entire band. We met up at the show, talked and he realized the song I was thinking wasn't the same song he was. The song he was thinking was "Shalya" -- another amazing track from Eat to the Beat. We went to my car and listened to the song a few times through. Ramesh went looking for an acoustic guitar. I returned into the venue. Within minutes, he said he had found one. I said "where were you thinking we'd record?", and he replied "there's probably enough room in your car." I had no complaints and we went to the quietest place to record -- 95 Corolla Studios as it will forever be called. This is the output.
