School's just about out for the summer - now what? Many parents will have signed their kids up for numerous camps and enrichment experiences by now, making sure that they won't have to hear the dreaded “I'm bored!” refrain repeated endlessly. That makes sense since kids are often passive receivers - of entertainment that both their technology and many toys that are made for children provide. They are also often passive recipients of education. Most are required to go to a formal school setting whether or not they want to, where they tend to be externally motivated by systems of rewards and punishments to do what adults tell them to do and learn what they're told to learn and when. This means that many kids these days don't have or take as many opportunities to create their own fun or decide what to do with their time as they once did. Furthermore, high-pressure academic environments can leave kids feeling anxious and depressed about where they fall in grade rankings - or that their scores are worth more than they are. Rather than developing a love of learning, these kids can end up developing the false idea that how they “perform” their learning means more than the learning itself.Transcript: https://project-parenthood.simplecast.com/episodes/5-ways-to-encourage-a-self-directed-summer-encore/transcriptSources: What Is Self-Directed Education? A huge part of the shifts we want to see in schools and in education more broadly is more agency, choice-making and self direction for young people. There is an increasingly compelling story about why this is important for them, as well as for the kinds of challenges we're facing in local communities and national and global society. But sometimes what isn't highlighted is the impact of not having those things. What toll does it take on youth well-being and mental health? So this week I'm joined by renowned clinical psychologist and educator Dr Naomi Fisher to help me find out.Naomi is a clinical psychologist, author and EMDR-Europe Accredited trainer. She specialises in trauma, autism and alternative ways to learn. She has worked for the Metropolitan Police and third sector organisations. She now works in private practice with adults, adolescents and children. She runs self-help webinars for parents on how to help their children with common mental health difficulties.Naomi is the author of several books on psychology, mental health and alternative education. In this episode of Radical Learning Talks, we talk about what culture creation is and why we find it to be one of the most important things to focus on when choosing to walk the unconventional path of Self-Directed Education. Culture creation is about putting words on what is important for everyone, and consciously embodying those values. This link is often what's missing for most people who want to make the paradigm shift from conventional schooling to SDE. Whether your family is unschooling or you're running (or thinking about starting) an SDE learning center, it's crucial to understand WHAT exactly you're walking away from so that you don't copy/paste those systems in the new path forward.

Are you worried that more kids today feel scared or sad? Do you think how we raise and teach kids might be part of the problem? It's not just phones or computers that might be hurting kids. Being too protective or having too many rules can also cause trouble. When kids don't get to play freely or do things on their own, it can slow down how they learn to think and feel. If we change how we think about raising and teaching kids, we might find better ways to help them. This could help kids become stronger, braver, and better at learning independently. In this episode, meet Peter Gray, a renowned psychologist and researcher who has significantly contributed to our understanding of play, education, and child development. His advocacy is self-directed education, and he has criticized conventional schooling methods. Tune in to learn more about parenting, fostering children, flaws in conventional schooling methods, the power of using technology, and more! Quotes: "We're not allowing them to do what children have always needed to do to grow up, which is to have time to play, to explore, to daydream, to mess around." – Peter Gray "We trust children because we've trained them on what to do, where to go, where not to go, who to talk to, how to talk to them, what they are capable of. And we trust them and believe them, and they stay rise to the occasion every single time." – Matt Beaudreau "We live in an era of technology; if you're not allowing kids to use this technology until a certain age, you're depriving them of a very valuable learning experience." – Peter Gray Takeaways: Let free play be unstructured for kids to develop creativity and problem-solving skills while boosting emotional development. Question the negative impact of overscheduling and too much adult oversight can have on worsening anxiety and depression in young children. Promote developmentally appropriate independence and risk-taking in children's play to spark self-assurance, grit, and bravery. This method helps empower kids with important life skills and strong self-esteem. Focus on engagement-driven, interest-based learning with a departure from hard age stage gates, especially for foundational skills like reading. The solution is not just to shelter children's use of digital technology but instead guide them towards responsible usage as good citizens in the real world. Conclusion: Kids need time to play freely without too many rules. This helps them grow and learn. Too many schedules and always watching kids might make them worried or sad. Let kids try new things independently, as long as it's safe for their age. This helps them become braver and stronger. Games and technology can be good for kids' minds if used the right way. When kids learn about things they like, they often learn better. This can even help them choose jobs they'll enjoy later. Don't protect kids too much. Trust that they can do more than you might think. If we change how we help kids grow up, we can be better parents and teachers. This way, kids can become more confident and capable.

A couple of years ago I was watching a session of the Alliance for Self-Directed Education's online conference by unschooling advocate Idzie Desmerais. At some point she dropped a quote into her presentation that I jotted down but didn't think much of at the time: What if your ideas about politics were just your ideas about childhood, extrapolated? I returned to my notes some months later, having spent much of that time immersed in writing the first draft of the book, the quote almost took my breath away. There, right in front of me, was a single sentence that encapsulated so much of what I'd been thinking and writing about. On the surface, it may seem as though these topics are completely unrelated but they are actually intimately connected. We use politics set up systems that support the culture we want to live in. We create systems that make it harder to vote because we don't think everyone should be able to vote - especially if you aren't White, male, or at least middle...

A common question about unconventional educational models, and especially about self-directed ones that put young people in charge of their own education, is how do kids turn out? To help answer that question I've invited Evan Hughes, who attended the renowned Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, MA for his childhood and adolescence, and now sends his son there as well.  Sudbury Valley was founded in 1968 and has since inspired the creation of dozens of Sudbury-model schools around the world. It prioritizes non-coercive, self-directed education within a democratically run community where adults and children have equal say in school operations, rule-making and enforcement, hiring and firing decisions, and so on. There are no adult-imposed classes, no grades, no curriculum or top-down evaluative measures. So how exactly does a person learn in this environment? *** Sign up for Kerry's free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.

In episode 37, Chris and Emma talked with Marni Kammersell, a 2e adult, doctoral student at Bridges Graduate School, and parent of three 2e children in Colorado. We started this episode by discussing our concerns about how overexcitabilities are sometimes interpreted in the gifted community. Parents of gifted and 2e children sometimes discover the OEs and stop there without exploring the types of neurodivergence that may be present in their children. We talked about the reality that it's possible to have a healthy neurodivergent identity without pathologizing oneself. Marni shared experiences from her journey as a 2e parent of 2e kids who have never attended formal schooling. She broached the idea that people should get to decide for themselves which words apply to their experiences and which communities they choose to associate with. Emma had freshly read Dąbrowski's book Psychoneurosis is Not an Illness when we recorded this episode and talked about his pioneering work as a clinician who was neurodiversity-affirming before that term existed. In his work, there is a clear message that being different doesn't mean you're defective. We learned about self-directed education, what that means, and how at its core, it is based on trusting children—and trusting all humans because, ideally, we should all become self-directed learners by the time formal schooling ends. Self-directed education and unschooling are grounded in children's rights and youth liberation, while traditional education operates top-down with a power over dynamic rather than power with. Marni also talked about the difference between homeschooling and unschooling. At the end of our discussion, we also discussed self-directed education in adulthood. Peter Gray is a research professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College who has conducted and published research in behavioral biology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education. It stultifies a child to bring down his world to the child's level.” To help me understand the educational value of the the natural home environment, I've invited Dr Peter Gray on the podcast today to discuss his experience and research in this area. This episode is part 1 of our conversation. We cover topics like why a classroom environment does not foster meaningful learning, why children learn better from from real life experiences, why public schools were started (and how they operate), and why the classroom environment actually nurtures anxiety, stress and bullying. Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology at Boston College, joins Tim to talk about whatever happened to free play among children. This is a problem in society. The fact that kids aren't playing in the same ways or as much as they used to. And what it all means. Peter has conducted and published groundbreaking research in the area of play in human evolution. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Peter_Gray_-_Play_auphonic.mp3 If I were to say the word, “play” to you, what would that make you think of? Would you wonder if I'm talking about playing a game, or playing a sport? Would you think I'm talking about tennis or golf? What if I were to talk about kids at play? What would that make you think of? Close your eyes. Do you see a group of kids at play? Is there an adult in the picture? Or, are they just playing amongst themselves? These are critical questions. And believe it or not, play, is a very important topic. In preparing for today's episode, our guest, Peter Gray, shared a paper he wrote recently for the Journal of Pediatrics. In it, Peter and his co-authors, dig deep into a problem in society. There has been a decline in what they call “independent activity” and it's hurting kids. That “independent activity” is otherwise known as play. Peter makes the case that the rise of anxiety and depression among kids of school age, and of teenagers in the U.S. is at an all-time high. They draw a correlation between this trend, and a steady decline in the chance for kids and teens to play in ways their parents did when they were kids. In ways their parents may have taken for granted. The first thing I wanted to ask Peter was, “What's the difference between playing on an organized baseball team or a soccer team, and the kind of play that he says is on the decline?” Links Peter Gray's Substack - Play Makes Us Human The Play of Animals, by Karl Groos (Amazon) The Play of Man, by Karl Groos (Amazon) Peter Gray TED Talk on Play (YouTube) Peter Gray, Boston College Free to Learn, by Peter Gray (Amazon) It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, by Dana Boyd (Amazon) Let Grow (website) Free Range Kids, by Lenore Skenazy (Amazon) Freedom To Learn, Psychology Today blog, by Peter Gray About this Episode's Guest Peter Gray Psychologist Peter Gray, faculty emeritus, photographed to accompany a story about his new book, "Free to Learn," which concerns the importance of play for children's healthy development and ability to thrive. Self-directed education is a tough concept for many people to grasp. It challenges the ways in which many of us were educated, and the ways many of our children continue to be educated, by flipping the entire idea of education as a top-down model of coercive schooling to a bottom-up model of individual agency and self-determination. My 2019 book, Unschooled: Raising Curious Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom, details the history and philosophy of non-coercive, self-directed education tied to one's individual interests, goals, and life pursuits.  One place that has become a beacon for parents and educators interested in the philosophy and practice of self-directed education is the Sudbury Valley School, that I write extensively about in Unschooled. Sudbury Valley was founded in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1968 and continues to flourish today more than 50 years later. It has also inspired the creation of dozens of democratic, Sudbury-model schools around the world, as well as various unschooling programs. If you remember back to episode 39 in October, I interviewed Sudbury Valley School cofounder, Mimsy Sadofsky, and explained why my husband and I decided to send our children there instead of continuing with homeschooling. But today I thought it would be interesting and insightful to hear from another parent, Nick Warren, who pulled his two children out of public school in 2021 and enrolled them at Sudbury Valley. Like us, Nick and his wife drive a long distance each way every day so that their kids can attend Sudbury Valley, but it's totally worth it. We talk more about why that is in today's show.  Sign up for my free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.

This conversation comes at an interesting time in the broader context of the future of education. In the wake of progress 8 results in the UK and NAEP scores in the United States, there appears to be a narrowing of educational possibilities toward a very particular model of schooling, or at least a model whose proponents have been the loudest in proclaiming victory. It has has gone by many names over the years but recently solidified under the umbrella of #ResearchEd or the “science of learning”. The claim here is that we understand and agree upon the ends of education - that is to raise standardized achievement scores - and it's simply a matter of aligning the means around “what works” to close gaps, raise scores - and at least in the context of pandemic schooling since 2020 - combat & reverse “learning loss”. “What works” of course, is the reiteration of adult authority with a laser focus on high expectations and results, the centrality of explicit/direct instruction, and above all a strict approach to school discipline. It's a model listeners in the United States might associate with Doug Lemov's Teach Like a Champion and listeners in the UK with Katharine Birbalsingh's Michaela School, where I imagine the notion of a self-directed education would be greeted with the same incredulity as geocentrism. Bolstered by these measures of success in national contexts, this model is increasingly decontextualized and exported as the solution to educational ills the world over.GUESTSDr. Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist and mother of two self-directed learners. The Sudbury Valley School is legendary in alternative education and unschooling circles. Founded in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1968, Sudbury Valley has become a beacon for parents and educators interested in non-coercive, self-directed education, and has inspired the creation of dozens of Sudbury-style schools around the world.  Our guest today is Mimsy Sadofsky, one of the original founders of the Sudbury Valley School who continues to work at the school as a full-time staff member.  This episode is also personally very special because I wanted to share with you our family's journey toward enrolling at Sudbury Valley School. School's out for the summer - now what? Rather than developing a love of learning, these kids can end up developing the false idea that how they “perform” their learning means more than the learning itself.Sources: What Is Self-Directed Education? The Essential School Sucks, #5 of 50 Theme One: The Real Problems With Public School Dr. Peter Gray was a research professor of psychology at Boston College, and author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (https://amzn.to/3sJOtcu). Peter serves on the Organizing team for the Alliance of Self-Directed-Education. He also runs a blog on Psychology Today called Freedom to Learn, where he regularly explains and promotes self-directed education from a variety of angles. Today Peter and I discuss creativity and critical thinking - two skills we agree are left underdeveloped (or even damaged) by public school and college. On critical thinking, Peter has referenced studies and surveys that reveal about 50% of employers are dissatisfied with entry-level, college graduate employees (PayScale Inc.) and that college does little to improve higher level thinking (Academically Adrift: Limited Learning On College Campuses - 2011). On creativity, Peter wrote a piece called As Children's Freedom Has Declined, So Has Their Creativity. Peter informs us that there are actually quantitative studies, including the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, that show a marked decline in children's creative capacity since the 1980s. We discuss the causes of this decline in detail. We finish with a friendly disagreement (then agreement) on the educational merits of video games. In part one we discussed the biological foundations of self-education. LISTEN HERE (https://www.patreon.com/posts/podcast-542-gray-16951940) In part three we'll talk about Peter's vision for self-directed education in the future.
