We can easily stereotype those we believe are susceptible to a scam. But the scammers are keeping up with current events and are prepared to take advantage of our basic human emotions. The impact of these frauds is underreported due to the shame and embarrassment.  Today's guest is Alan Castel. Alan is a Psychology professor at The University of California Los Angeles. He studies learning, memory, fraud, and aging. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Time Magazine. He recently published a book entitled Better With Age: The Psychology of Successful Aging. Show Notes: [1:08] - Alan shares his background and what he focuses on as a psychologist. [3:33] - We are all susceptible to scams, regardless of the stereotypes. [5:50] - Scams focus on our human nature of trying to make sense of the world and our emotional brain. Scams prey on our basic emotions. [7:34] - Scams are tailor made to expose our vulnerabilities. [8:50] - Some scams are situational and can be completely believable. [10:05] - There are people who are much more vulnerable to scams, but it's not based on stereotypes. [12:48] - Education and awareness can come from podcasts like this, but it also needs to come from people who have experienced a scam. [15:33] - Although scams don't only target older adults, the elderly tend to be more susceptible to scams that target their need to help others. [18:19] - There are some phrases that aren't always recognized as false because they sound scientific. [20:48] - There are websites and organizations that support scam victims, and it is highly recommended that you report anything that happens. [22:32] - Alan admits that he has fallen victim to a scam on a website, entering his credit card information to purchase something. So roughly between 60 to 74, it is at its peak and before you retire and throughout your adult working phase, it starts out pretty low in early to late twenties, but it's steadily increases and increases so that as you get settled into your career and become senior and established, you tend to on average leave your career on a high note. You're flourishing, but it gets better. And that's the point I want to make, that it's the first decade at least of retirement. People are doing really well on average. It's the problems that come with if we live long enough. And by that I mean roughly past the age of 75 plus and more and more of us are. We see a downturn in flourishing and an increase in languishing towards the end of life." On Activities That Promote Flourishing "... five of the activities stood out among people who were flourishing, who they did more of the following. They engaged in more forms of helping behavior. It might be volunteering, helping people, or even living your purpose. Go out there and help someone or help something in the world and make it better. The second vitamin, that flourishers did more of was that they connected, prioritizing warm, trusting relationships. Relationships where they had a sense of belonging, where they were part of a community and relationships where they mattered. And by that I meant they were needed. And in my measurement of flourishing, the sense of contributing worth and value to the world is baked into flourishing. So the second thing they did more of was connect around warmth, trust, belonging, and mattering. The third was they were very active in learning something new and prioritizing personal growth.

In today's conversation with Dr. Alan Castel, we're talking about how the brain, thinking, and cognition change as we age. In this episode, Dr. Castel will discuss some of the “normal” age-related declines we can expect as we get older, at what point can we begin to discern if our decline is atypical or problematic, some of the research-proven ways we can preserve and protect the health of our brain's memory and attentional capabilities as we age, and what goes into creating a meaningful and fulfilling life according to older populations. Alan Castel is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He studies learning, memory, and aging, and is interested in how people can selectively remember important information. He lectures internationally to people of all ages, has received several teaching awards and was a Fulbright Scholar in Israel. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine. His recent book is entitled Better with Age: The Psychology of Successful Aging. Don't stick your head in the sand and pretend it's never gonna happen to you. Then you will have an advantage over most other people. Most other people are not thinking about this."   On Aging in Place "The biggest fallacy that people have when they think about retirement is they say, "I'm going to age in place" and I'm putting quote marks in for your listeners age in place. Age in place means nothing. Age in place is a way to say, I'm going  to stay in my house and ignore the world and myself changing. So if you want to age in place, you have to modify your home. You have to set aside money for internal caregivers. You have to make a plan, you have to share it with your financial advisor, your kids, et cetera. You can't just stay in your home and say, I'm aging in place - because that's not a plan. So my big message to to your listeners is no matter what age you are, assuming you're let's say over 60, make a plan, cost it out, share it with your financial advisor, your elder care attorney, your attorney, your kids and and think about that.

So, it's success criteria for, for what? To avoid ageing? To stay young.? And so if we want to really use the term Successful Aging, I think the success criteria should be more how to embrace these transitions - according to what each one of us and as individual thinks is important to us. And the four skills that I mentioned in my book, Ageing Upwards,  is to be aware of this ability to change our mindset, to see things in a different perspective and, and to be able to broaden out our awareness so that we can meet all the challenges we see with affection and self-compassion." On Mindfulness "That whole idea about being in the present moment and relaxing is a part of mindfulness. It helps us to practice our ability to pay attention to the present moment, and for some people it also helps them calm down their nervous system. But I think there's so much more to mindfulness than just being present. The true benefit from mindfulness really lies when we start to see, to gain this awareness as I explained before, so we are not just in the present moment, but we are aware of being in the present moment. It's like this extra layer of it."   On Learning to Practice Mindfulness   "Unfortunately, mindfulness is not a quick fix. I wish it was. It takes a lot of time and effort and it can also be unpleasant because we are seeing things that we might not want to see. And instead of running away from discomfort and pain, we're turning towards it and meeting it with curiosity. So that's what you have to be prepared for. And what's funny is a lot of people, whenever I teach mindfulness, they come back to me after maybe three weeks and say,

The emotional struggles and stigmas around a potential move to a community or setting up more support at home weigh on our minds.   My guest today is Catherine Owens, Owner of CLO Consulting & Author of Be Your Own Hero: Senior Living Decisions Simplified, Senior Living Industry expert, and Aging Well authority.   In her book and in our conversation today, we look at making proactive and educated decisions, rather than making decisions in crisis, and understanding the difference between aging in place and putting in place tools to age well. Catherine urges us as families and older adults to have difficult but necessary conversations so we can understand the decision process and how it can benefit families and the senior living communities that they're considering. Her background within the healthcare administration arena spans over ten years working mainly in non-profit academic medical centers as well as in the consulting arena. Her expertise includes operations, financial oversight, human resource management, and working with multiple stakeholders to drive departmental initiatives. She currently works at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center as the Director of Operations for the Center for Successful Aging. Angela received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Angela attended The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, DC to pursue her master's in healthcare administration.  The graduate program included a one-year residency in which she completed at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Professional associations that Angela is a part of include American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE).  Angela has a passion for making a difference and has held several leadership positions within NAHSE at a local and national level. She has served as the Membership & Communications Chair of the Baltimore Chapter, Co-Chair for the National Mentoring Program, Member of the National Case Competition Planning Committee, Treasurer of the Atlanta Chapter, and most recently as President of the Atlanta Chapter.She is a firm believer health is wealth!
