Two craft beer lovers, born and bred in the Mecca of Microbrews: Southern California, are serving up an un-jaded and pretension-free review of a different Brewery each and every week on their endless quest to cut through trendy terminology and elitist B.S. to answer the simple question: is this Brew…
The boys return after an almost year-long hiatus to “ketchup” on the state of cervezas in the world, all while cracking a few random brews from the back of the fridge and beyond. Disc Golf and bodily fluids are discussed, of course, while sipping someSome Modern Times stouts, some random back-o-the-fridge ales - and a holiday ale brewed by Black Hole Supply Company artist and friend of the show: Dorsh Gorner.
We’re living in quite extraordinary times, and our favorite brewery, Modern Times, has released a thematically linked line of quarantine beers as their standard monthly releases have marched on in the face of revenue destroying tasting room closures. Thrillon McGillon (aka Dillon) joins us again to sip all of the May 2020 special release beers and let you know if they’re “good drinkin’ beers” or “a little too chemically.” We guzzle down Extraordinary Times Dry-Hopped Pilsner, Extraordinary Times Hazy IPA, Extraordinary Times Hazy Double IPA, and Extraordinary Times Doom Hawk with wild abandon, all while talking about the state of beer throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic, and Joey’s huge problems with Rick and Morty fandom - which is the most important aspect of this 3 hour podcast of course.
Today we’re pourin’ over the massive amount of changes in the Craft Beer industry during the fun little quarantine we’re all going through right now. Breweries are becoming drive-thrus, the rarest barrel aged “tasting room only pours” are being filled to the brim in crowlers and literally shipped to your doorstep - what has the beer world come to?! Our hearts go out to all the screwed over tasting room employees who’ve been affected by this, but our mandatory WFH tummies are filled with delicious brews that have never been easier to get. Also, we go into a FULL SPOILERCAST of Netflix’s Tiger King - the best thing to hit a world full of viral refugees who are sitting at home day drinking high-abv pastry stouts and need a distraction. The trials and tribulations of Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, one-armed trans-men, the Wal-Mart expired meat truck, Jeff Lowe, Doc Antle and more are probed DEEP into...as deep as the love between three male meth-heads could have.
Steve concocted a stupendous...and quite sticky...idea recently: to invite a bunch of people to his house and crack open some insanely rare, expensive stouts that he’s been aging in his kitchen cabinets for YEARS. They were practically falling out every time you opened one, say to get some Cheetos Puffs or some salty macadamia nuts. On top of that, he decided that he, Joey, former guest Thrillon, and friend of the show and first time guest Dorsh Gorner would be uncapping and upending his hyper rare, hyper high-value MT Ultra 3-pack from Modern Times to (and a bevy of other expensive brews) on Beer There, Drunk That for your listening pleasure! This might be the grandest Pre-Party sesh ever, as the boys go through SEVEN high ABV, high dollar stouts (including an Abnormal Pappy Van Winkle bottle or two) BEFORE Blackout Friday even started - then they cracked over 10 more!!! Were they all wasted by 6PM that night? Let’s guzzle down and find out!
After a half-year hiatus, the boys are back to recount their recent excursion vacation to Bavaria (southern Germany) for Munich’s Oktoberfest 2019! Many liters were drank, many lederhosen and dirndls were seen, and many PISS-FREAKS were witnessed...at least in the form of new improvised characters that Joey and Steve used to annoy Joey’s wife for the 12 day trip. What is Oktoberfest like for a couple of morons from southern California? What kind of brew varietals will you find there? Have they even HEARD of Hazy IPAs in Deutschland?! Let’s guzzle down and find out!
Our first podcast Inception-style crossover episode! Welcome to Closet Knowledge, our topical podcast where we come out of the knowledge closet and go deep...very deep...about something we’re both into, something a guest is into, or something one of us is into. We’re crossing over to pull our love of Beer out of the knowledge closet, with all the basic factoids to give you a pretty good baseline on what the hell beer is, what it’s made of, the difference between Lagers and Ales, Stouts and Porters, Pale Ales and India Pale ales, all that sudsy shit. Let us know what you think in the comments of your favorite podcast service, and for more content like this, join our Patreon at patreon.com/probingancientaliens, which exclusively houses bonus podcasts like Adventurous Ghosts, our Ghost Adventures podcast, and Probing Deeper, which discusses the paranormal and other content out put in the ancient aliens-verse. What’s this? What’s this? There’s white things in the air! That’s right little skellingtons Joey recently drove up to the land of Ultimate White Stuff: Mammoth Lakes, CA for a family getaway full of blow in the snow. Of course he took a trip over to what used to be the only brewery in town - Mammoth Brewing - to grab a grip of their in-line bottles and a couple seasonal special releases to bring back to his best (suds) bud Steve to sample everything this long standing staple of post-boarding brew lovers has to offer, including Golden Trout Kolsch, Yosemite Pale Ale, Double Nut Brown, Epic IPA, IPA 395, Charley’s Revenge Olde Ale, and a few special releases. Does Mammoth Brewing Company shred the slopes as well as the locals that fill it’s bar stools every evening after the mountain shuts down? Or is it’s popularity simply due to the defacto monopoly it’s held on the entire Mammoth Craft Beer Scene for more than two decades? We give some honorable mentions to brand new rival brewery Black Doubt (soon to be Distant) Brewing as well, so it’s a bit of a double black diamond episode if we do say so ourselves! Let’s guzzle down some ice cold Mammoth Brewery beers bro
The boys have quite the treat on today’s episode - all the way from the Far East, Hong Kong specifically, are beers from Young Master Brewery - a true delicacy for some Cali surfer dudes! We pit them against a duo of brew houses from the Far East...of America: Florida, where they sip some suds from Orange Blossom Brewing Co. and Hidden Springs Ale Works! How do these southern-fried fermentations fare against the far-flung brew-jewels of the Orient? You’ll just have to gape those ear-holes and find out! Yee-haw and Nihao to you good sirs and madams!
This week the city of brotherly love is reestablished in the borough of Brooklyn, New york as Steve’s big brother Matt joins us with a handful of east coast ales to throw into our tummy pails! A recent work trip to the hipster-laden neighborhoods of B-town resulted in a suitcase full of brews that we can’t get our hands on out in the good ol’ Califor-Nai-Ay including Interboro’s Premiere Double Dry Hoppped IPA and Other Half Brewing’s Dream Layers Oat Cream IPA and Feels Like Outer Space American Imperial (AKA Triple) IPA. These tasty suds are complimented by a bevy of brews news about recent review brewery, Trillium, and their employment woes as well as diving deep into their heavy metal-filled childhoods - leading all the way up to their recent visit to the Decibel Metal & Beer fest at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, where they crushed can releases from Hoof Hearted, Wake Brewing and a handful of others as their ears guzzled sick riffs with their noses inhaling dank spliffs! Let’s guzzle down and drink in the memories of these brothers from the same mother!
Boston-born beer makers Trillium Brewing Company have been winning their fair share of awards in their five years of existence, mostly in the hop forward IPA categories but making a sweet splash with their experimental pastry stouts. The boys’ good pal Thrillon returns from his beer-trading escapades with a bevy of dark brews to sample and review on the show - a rare treat out here in sunny southern California - including their Tiramasu Imperial Stout, Coconut Pecan Pie Imperial Stout, Nanaimo Imperial Stout, and Affogato Imperial Stout. How did the boys enjoy their first sips of this sought after bastion of east coast beer excellence? How did each desserty delight fare against each other? How drunk do the boys get on air as they share 4 26 oz bottles between the three of them? You better guzzle down with them to find out ya wannabe Mass-hole!
Bootlegger's Brewery finally opened its newest location in Costa Mesa, CA and you better believe Steve and Joey skittle-skattled on over to test the new digs! How did this newest take on one of their oldest favorites compare to their Fullerton locale? Were these brand new taps pumping out the same quality Knuckle Sandwich, Rocco Red, Pumpkin Ale, Valencia Orange (and more!) that the boys were used to? Have their hazy IPA's benefited from a change of scenery or are they still lackluster gut busters? As a bonus, the guys throw in their review of Bottle Logic's Harry Potter-themed Tri-Wizard Trivia Tournament! It's the brewery's third, and the boys' second, go-around with this event, and there was an amazing assortment of exclusive beer to be had, from Butterbeer to The Grim to Paisley Cave Complex, Fundamental Observation, and their always solid New England IPAs like Roots of Muir. How did teams Patranus and Mung-dungus Feltcher fair in the contest? Guzzle down, listen, and find out!
Joey’s back from his Italian honeymoon where he sampled many a beer from the land of noods and sauce. He shares his thoughts on the burgeoning Italian craft beer scene - aka “birra artigianale” - as it’s said with your fingers together and hand moving back and forth with each syllable. He went beyond the pale...ale...during his stay in Zurich, Lake Como, Venice, Florence, and Rome and sucked down many a brew in each little corner of the homeland of his heritage. How is Italian Craft Beer different from American Craft Beer? How is Italian Craft Beer different than Southern California’s suds, specifically? It’s all a very “bene” conversation I assure you - and as a big wet treat for you listeners out there, he and his wife packed away six different Italian brews that he guzzles down with Steve on the air, so that the sexy, single Signore can also get a taste of the hops that sprouted throughout Joey’s honeymoon.
The boys bro-down in sailor-ville this week: Southern California’s import/export mega port, San Pedro, to visit recently exploded (haven’t we all been there before!?) Brouwerij West! Formerly only known for sours and wild ales, this quirky, yet consistent brew house is riding a new wave of popularity thanks to excellent local distribution and dipping both feet into the world of Hazy/New England IPAs. What sets them apart is equally obsessing over their malts as well as their hops, and an amazing set of flavor shapes thanks to running these cloudy bad boys through a centrifuge so they’re all killer and no filler. What did Steve & Joey think of their massive former military warehouse brewery space and subsequent suds like Tahiti Substation, Dig My Earth, FA Really, Picnic Lightining, Super Collider, Popfuji, and a smattering of stouts and sours? You’ll have to guzzle down with us to find out, sailors! Yankers awaaaaaay!
Things get dark and infected (what else is new, huh?!) on this week’s episode, as the boys welcome their favorite trade mule, Dillon - aka Thrillon - back to the show with a bevy of brews from Ohio’s Jackie O’s Brewing! Each barrel aged stout has the potential to be infected by wild bacteria due to a 2017 snafu, which apparently pissed off a lot of their fans, since their stouts are highly coveted and generally delivered a high quality brew. But Steve & Joey are just stoked to be guzzling down some suds they’ve never sipped before, and telling you all about the potential tongue-tang that are the telltale signs of tainted beer. Grab your balls and get ready for the long haul, babyyyyyy!
Ol’ Stevey-poo took one for the team and procured a goodly amount of decidedly UN-local brews from Berkley’s Fieldworks Brewing Co and Salinas-based Alvarado Street Brewery on a recent trip to the Bay Area. The boys settle in for an on-air “Taste of the Bay” event the likes of which the world has never seen, sampling Hazy Train IPA, Cloud Control, Champagne Hopi, Shred Red, Grower’s Pale Ale, and All Absolutes Triple IPA. Do the brother-proclaimed “Hazy Boys” appreciate their bay area brew brethren over their sumptuous socal suds...or do they shit in the very bay that produces overpriced real estate, today’s top tech, and the world’s most presumptuous people. Let’s gear up and guzzle down these pretty cool cans!!!
The boys take a trip to old town Pasadena - just like a little old lady they might have met along the way - for Alien Con 2018. But beer, as always, was at the forefront of their minds, so they sought out the small Stone Brewery tasting room/filling station at the Pasadena train station to sample more of the mammoth craft brew giant’s consistent selection of west coast IPA’s, including the new Impeach and Idolotrous. Night 2 we prayed at the altar of the Cathedral-themed Congregation Ale House - a small franchise in southern California that brews its own beer, serves fine sausages (which you know we love sucking down) and has a plethora of guest libations to pour over. Is Pasadena worth a visit when playing the craft brew game of life? Is the Stone gargoyle petrifying in it’s risk averse offerings west coast styles during the hazy revolution? Do we truly understand bacon canyon udder sputter from grammy’s old teets? Guzzle down with us and find out!
The boys are back in town after their Northwest excursion, and hit up the newest location of one of their favorite beerarias: The Downtown LA based Dankness Dojo from Modern Times Brewing. They sip on some crazy hazies, of course, like Atomic Drop, Mortal Cloak, Game Impact, Fountains of Paradise, Mountain Voice, Dual Monarchies, and more; plus, they’re pleasantly surprised by the drinkability of the usually-divisive Barley Wine: Oblivion Ring, as well as the sheer yumminess of Deads and Exploits and raspberry Devil’s Teeth stouts! The boys also chat about rat sex, tiny pee pees, and how you eat your Reese’s mixed in with all the brewy gooey goodness - so let’s get started and guzzle this fucker down!
Description: Bachelor party weekend part deux is finally catalog on this cream-filled episode! After their day trip to Eugene, the boys head back to Portland, OR and hit up lots of brew pubs and eatin’ holes, but most notably Oregon standout Great Notion Brewing and Modern Times new Belmont Fermentorium - with a few quick shoutouts to Deschutes Brewery, Burnside Brewing, Sparky’s Pizza, Sizzle Pie, Hele Pele Tiki Bar, Pine St. Biscuits, and many other touristy-ass spots around PDX. Many beers were drank, with the most notable being Modern Times Outside Worlds Hazy Double IPA, Great Notion’s Juice Box and Super Ripe Hazys, and Hoof Hearted’s Girth Brooks - perhaps the best stout we’ve ever guzzled! Let’s brew down, boys and gals!
The boys are out in Eugene, Oregon as part of a two part Oregon Brewery special, with the 2nd part: Portland, coming at ya soon! Joey’s Bachelor party was a brewhouse buffet, and they kicked if off in Eugene by visiting a long time favorite of the Italian groom-to-be: Ninkasi Brewing! There weren’t many surprises at the teal-hued home of great beers like Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout and Tricerihops IPA, but Ninkasi is truly geared for quality and widespread distribution, so it was still a great bucket list checkmark. After a big pastrami bonanza at Falling Skies Brewery (filled with old world styles and cask ales) the gaggle of greasy geezers set off to Oakshire Brewing. A new logo and a great open environment set things off right, and Joey might have found one of his new favorite beers of all time! And, as always, the great search for Hazys was in full effect, and we sure found some doozies in the Pacific Northwest!
Steve & Joey head to Huntington Beach once again to hit up RIIP Beer Company, nestled virtually sand-side right off the famous Pacific Coast Highway. RIIP represents your classic home-brew rags to riches story, with too friends (Spencer Colman and Mike Baccaro, in this case) starting with some basic equipment in their garage, then having the innovative idea to become the “milkmen of craft beer” by buying, and delivering with, a 1931 Helms Bakery Coach van, to now having a permanent - and expanding - spot surf city, USA. The boys get flights of almost the entire tap list, including Chok Ya Later American IPA, ShiQi American IPA, Iron Lung Dry Stout, Dan-k IPA, Gate Keeper Nitro Porter, Rye OG Pale Ale, and Jetty Water Blonde; but does RIIP manage to carve its own beer-scented path...or does it simply rip off ideas from better brew-houses?
Steve & Joey head to Orange, CA’s parrot-bearing purveyor of pints, Green Cheek Beer Co. this week. Young in name only, this burgeoning brewery has the lineage of Noble Ale Works’ in its DNA, with the brewmaster jumping ship and buying the old Valiant Brewery building in Spring 2017. The industry experience definitely shows, with sophisticated and experimental offerings that focus mostly on the Hazy side of things, while still churning out high quality executions of other well-known varieties. The boys arrived just in time for the release of their newest New England Double IPA: the double dry hopped and pineapple/tangerine forward “More Spacier,” as well as a bevy of other brews for review: Guava Berlin Berliner Weisse, Gram Worthy Hazy Cream IPA, Chocolate Spumoni Chocolate Milkshake IPA, Nondescript Kolsch, Cherry Spumoni Cherry Milkshake IPA, Radiant Beauty West Coast IPA, Walter Hazy IPA w/ White Tea, and German for Dark dunkel bier. So does Green Cheek live up to the hype? Or does it need to step out of the spotlight with its green cheeks turning red with embarrassment? Let’s guzzle it over and find out!
Family begun, and family run 4 Sons Brewing of Huntington Beach, CA, is, coincidentally enough, only four years old as of 2018, but it’s become a sleeper hit throughout the OC since its inception: appearing in restaurants and bars, winning multiple festival awards, and even opening up its distribution into Tennessee. Steve & Joey sample a bevy of brews from the house that Duke, Daune, Deven, Derek, Drew, and Dustin built: Coco Nutorious Amber Ale, Land of Hoppertunity Blood Orange IPA, Nightmare on Gothard Street Chocolate Coffee Stout, The Great One Imperial IPA, Surf City Pale Ale, and even their special release gose and sour stouts. Do these proprietors of “Real Family. Real Ingredients” deserve the top spot as Surf City, USA’s most supreme beer boarders? Or do they completely wipeout, drowning in the competition? Let’s guzzle it over, fuckers
The oft-mentioned “Thrillon” (Dillon) joins Steve and Joey as their special guest this week, and he comes bearing some mighty fine gifts: ten pale-variety beers from Massachusetts-based Tree House Brewery for us to share and sample on the air! After this extended suds-bud session, the boys talk about their experience at the recent 7th birthday party for Noble Ale Works, which underpromised and overdelivered in a MAJOR (nelson) way! Their 2nd Canniversary Triple Hazy IPA was a big hit, as were its variants, and the biggest (and most pleasant!) surprise was their wide variety of Lactose infused Cereal Beers, flavored with Apple Jacks, Golden Grahams, Froot Loops, Reese’s Puffs, Crunchberries, and Cocoa Pebbles. We also try out our new portable recorder for the first time, so you can witness us getting more and more drunk and idiotic as the day went on.
Santa Ana based brew house, Cismontane (French for: “Side of the Mountains”), is on display this week, with the company’s own website claiming: “Since 2009 we have been focusing on brewing great beers with real intention. There is no particular style or creedo in our line but just quality no matter what we are making.” A bold, yet non-committal mission statement, uncommon in the generally bombastic and audacious world of craft beer, and one in which Steve and Joey explore the validity of by sipping the likes of Coulter IPA, Hop Dumpster Double IPA, Black’s Dawn Stout, Blacks Dawn on Nitro, Side of Toast (second run of Black’s Dawn), Down by Law Double IPA, Strawberry Letter 23, Reverend Roscoe Sour Blonde, as well as their Almond Joy-esque cask night offering. Did the boys dig the throwback, Pine-forward flavor profile of this almost decade long Orange County staple...or is it time to burn that evergreen forest to the ground?
In what seems to be a rising trend of Gastropub/Brewery hybridization, San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company claims to be the first on the southland’s scene in 1989, making lofty statements such as “...{we} became home to more breweries, many of whom got their start {here}”. Steve, Joey, and our guest Craig (@wottoartist) head to a the recently remodeled Costa Mesa location to sample new school experiments like Boat Shoes New England IPA, Fergs Red IPA, Padre Porter, and 29th Anniversary Ale; as well as some classics like Wreck Alley Imperial Stout, Red Trolley (and it’s Red Wine Barrel Aged variant), and Pintail Pale Ale. They savored some apps and entrees as well, and pondered whether Karl Strauss’ claims of shepherding in the highly influential world of San Diego microbrews hold water, or if they leave us thirsty for something a bit more satisfying.
The boys’ original review of Bottle Logic Brewing was such a hyper-specific themed affair, that they decided to head back to those mad scientists of the Anaheim beer scene, and give them a more thorough taste. Paring their selection down to basically IPA’s and Stouts, the style selection is limited, but, as you’ll hear, very varied in flavor. Steve & Joey guzzle down Cobra Attack WCIPA, Hammond’s Amber Ale, Jungle Hunt WCIPA, Upon Further Review Coffee WCIPA, Hyborian Age Hazy IPA, Pallet Treasure Imperial Chocolate Salted Nut Roll Stout, Sonic Rings Hazy IPA, Robots in Disguise Hazy DIPA, and Red Rover Imperial Red Ale. Now doubling down more on nerd culture over pulp science, does Bottle Logic earn the street cred with these two beer geeks...or end up just another poser trying to be an O.G.?
Steve & Joey welcome their first guest, Welder and Graphic Designer, Cody, of A3 Workshop to sip on some suds from the pared down Huntington Beach, CA location of Beachwood Brewing and BBQ. Much lauded in the SoCal beer scene in recent years, the boys come to some surprising conclusions about the restaurant-turned-brewhouse after sampling styles like Citraholic IPA, Amalgamator IPA, Hop Ninja IPA, Tovarish Imperial Stout, Mounds of Joy Imperial Milk Stout, and El Verano Belgian style Saison. Is Beachwood worth their weight in the thousands of pounds of meat served up each year...or do they succumb being a jack of all trades, and master of none?
Steve & Joey head to Anaheim, California’s Unsung Brewing Company this week, lured in by sampling a few of its festival beers in months passed and being intrigued by their high level of experimental beer recipes. Nestled in a burgeoning hip hangout spot near the Packing House and Disneyland, they took to the gravel-strewn beer garden with butt-sweat seats to sip on Nebuloid: Cat’s Eye Hazy IPA, Mt. Magma Imperial Red Ale, Buzzed Man Mutant American Ale w/ Hidden House Coffee, Anthia IPA, Metaplex IPA, Naturia Double IPA, Propeller Head Amber Ale w/ Hidden House Coffee, Brose Oatmeal Stout, Green Bullet Pale Ale, La Windsor Belgian Dubbel, and a tiny taster of their Plum Sour. Did these unsung heroes burst through our burning pallets and save us from the dastardly doldrums of boring beer? Or did these adventurous concoctions turn into villains, most foul?
Only a few years into its existence and already expanding to multiple locations along the west coast, San Diego’s Modern Times Beer has embraced the craft beer world, and the craft beer world has more than embraced back. For good reason too: this employee-owned brew house claims to make some of the most supremely drinkable concoctions in their fermenting tanks and barrels, but does it live up to the hype? Steve & Joey head down to a special event - then the brewery, proper - to find out if styles like Ghost Train Hazy IPA, Monster’s Park Imperial Stout, Bourbon Barrel Aged variants of Devil’s Teeth Imperial Stout, Finally in L.A. Hazy IPA, the much-anticipated special release of Barrel Aged Modem Tones, and many, many more justify the hype around Modern Times...or if it’s best left in the past.
The boys are tackling a pillar of the west coast craft beer industry, and, arguably, the craft beer industry as a whole: Ballast Point. They take in some libations and guzzle down some grub at their new waterfront Long Beach location, taking in the beautiful view of the majestic Pacific Ocean...who’s imagery and wildlife are the very inspiration for Ballast Point’s nautical branding. Sold to Constellation Brands for 1 Billion dollars in 2015, is the now nationwide giant simply a “sell-out?” Or have they continued their commitment to experimentation and quality post corporate buy-out? Let’s dive into the likes of Sculpin IPA, Victory at Sea Stout, Fathom IPA, Grunion Pale Ale, and some experimental selections from the R&D section of their menu.
Steve and Joey head to one of the hipper little corners of central Orange County: Costa Mesa, to sample the brews of Barley Forge Brewing Co. A few years old, and known locally for its “The Patsy” Coconut Rye Stout, the boys wanted to put a more critical eye on a brewery that tends to be on the periphery of their tasting room rotation. With a full service kitchen, a perpetually long bar line, and fairly cramped quarters, the question must be asked: Does Barley Forge want to be a gastropub, or a Brewery? During the discussion of Donkey Guard Double Red Ale, Fusty Pucket Winter Warmer Brown Ale, Karl Hungus Schwarzbier, XPA extra Pale Ale, Black Dahlia Belgian Dark Ale, and Future Tripping Double IPA, they ponder if these brews make it worth the less-than-ideal setup, and they also introduce a new segment: Grossery Grabs!
Steve & Joey venture to Old Towne Orange’s Chapman Crafted Beer this week, which has become much-talked-about in the OC brewery scene. After being lured in by the Slow Riser (a Red Ale w/ Coffee on Nitro) at some recent beer fests, it was decided that a deep, intimate exploration be had with this no-frills, simply branded brew house. They sample almost the entire menu during their stay, and then gorge on some big tasty weiners to unwind and unload their thoughts on their experience. Is Chapman Crafted Beer truly a sleeper hit...or just a snooze?
Nestled between the OC’s two major sports stadiums, Noble Ale Works’ popularity is on the rise. With consistent, limited releases of New England/Hazy/Juicy IPA’s like 48K Juice, Creature from the Murk Lagoon, and The Juice is Out There; as well as massive stouts like Whoomp! There It Is, 2017 has been this formerly solid, if a bit unexceptional, brewery’s second coming out party, with widely sought-after can releases powered by a new Head Brewer, and a hard-earned expansion to it’s facility and taproom coming soon. Does this recent spike of hype justify them as the noble ruler of the Anaheim, CA beer scene? Guzzle down with us to find out!
Steve and Joey make a harrowing journey through downtown LA’s skid row on a search for the much sought after Mumford Brewing. Were the bevy of brews worth the grueling slog through endless Tent Tenaments, Sidewalk Sleepers, and Piss-smell Powerhouses?! Well you’ll just have to guzzle down their thoughts on So Hot Right Now Pilsner, Splendido NE IPA, Meff IPA, Skidrokyo Porter w/ Stumptown Coffee, Re:Define Dry Hopped Keller Bier, Fully Engaged Mixed Fermentation Saison, Bending Gravity Russian Imperial Stout, Medium Difficulty American Stout, and Daaaannng Imperial Black Saison to find out!
Fullerton’s Bootlegger’s Brewery has a special place in Steve and Joey’s hearts, being the place in which they broke their “beer lover’s” cherry, so to speak. They come back to review its wide range of beer after a few-year hiatus, wondering if the beloved - but perhaps a little stagnant in terms of trends - Orange County tap room is moving into the future with gusto...or stumbling along the way. We go in-depth on Fuzzy Black Ninja IPA, Pumpkin Old Ale, Tropikaleidescope Belgian Pale Ale, Tropical Thunder Hazy Pale Ale, Thai Tea Far Out IPA, Haze Go By Hazy IPA, and Cloudware Hazy IPA; then, some quick shout-outs to Bootlegger’s classics: Rocco Red, Palamino Pale Ale, Chongo Mexican Lager, Black Phoenix Stout, Mountain Meadow, Golden Chaos, and, of course, Knuckle Sandwich.
Only a year in existence, Costa Mesa’s Gunwhale Ales brewery is pushing blends of old European farmhouse styles with the citrus and hop-forward brews of the west coast; which they’ve dubbed “Coastal Ales.” Steve and Joey dive into their thoughts on Bait Ball IPA, Hopped for Mama Farmhouse IPA, Pau Brah IPA, Majordomo Citrus Farmouse Ale, Savage Season Unfiltered IPA, Flooded Fields Summer Saison, Sgt. Gun Dry-Hopped Saison, and a shoutout to their Oyster Stout: Shellmaker.
Steve and Joey sample Signal Hill’s newest brewery: Ten Mile Brewing Company, a family-owned establishment specializing in historically accurate recipes. Beers on tap in this review: Discovery Well Amber Ale, Citrallenial American Pale Ale, Hidden Hollow Kentucky Common, Dark Side of the Moo Milk Stout, Trail Maker IPA, Maggie Mae Blonde Ale, Das Unkommoner Dunkels Bock, and Orange Limey British Golden Ale, and Segway to Munich Helles Munich Lager.
The boys take on five breweries from the rapidly growing beer scene of L.A.’s South Bay: Smog City Brewing Company, Monkish Brewing Co., The Dudes Brewing Company, Cosmic Brewery, and British-inspired Yorkshire Square. And boy, do they have some opinions with a capital O!
Steve and Joey head to Bottle Logic Brewing’s Harry Potter-themed Triwizard Trivia Tournament, and try their seven magical beers brewed exclusively for the event: Butterbeer, Alohamora, A Gaunt and Silent Spectre, Felix Felicis, The Cruciatus Curse, Rubeus Rubeus Rubeus, and The Grim.
Two craft beer lovers, born and bred in the Mecca of Microbrews: Southern California, are serving up an un-jaded and pretension-free review of a different Brewery each and every week on their endless quest to cut through trendy terminology and elitist B.S. to answer the simple question: is this Brewery (or bunch of brews) great, garden variety, or gross?
