Join us on our latest episode where we talk all things Bourbon County.  Not about the actual county in Kentucky, but about the glorious liquid produced once a year from Goose Island Brewery in the form of their Bourbon County Brand Stout. In this episode we talk about the upcoming releases from the Bourbon County Brand portfolio and we also revisit a past botte, 2015 Rare.  From the Bourbon County website, Back in 1979 the folks at Heaven Hill Distilleries filled a handful of new freshly charred American white oak barrels with some of their finest whiskey. It is rare for Bourbon to age in barrels for more than twenty-three years. But these barrels patiently sat for over thirty years. The extra years developed a distinct and complex character that makes them truly one-of-a kind. We filled those barrels with Bourbon County Brand Stout, and then stored them away in our Chicago Barrel House to age for two more years. With these rare barrels from our friends at Heaven Hill we believe this is one of the finest beers we have ever produced. This is Goose Island Rare Bourbon County Brand Stout for 2015Is 2015 Rare still holding up?  it worth it?  What are our thoughts on the newest releases coming Black Friday?  Only one way to find out...https://www.gooseisland.com/bourbon-county-brand-stouthttps://untappd.com/b/goose-island-beer-co-rare-bourbon-county-brand-stout-2015/1230311#newrelease #craftbeerreview #gooseisland #bourboncounty #beer #bourbon #whiskey #drinkreview #podcast #isitworthit #arsenicculture https://www.youtube.com/@arsenicculturehttps://instagram.com/arsenicculturehttps://tiktok.com/@arsenicculturehttps://www.facebook.com/arsenicculture/https://x.com/arseniccultureBourbon County 2024: Anticipating The New, Enjoying The Old-E89https://www.youtube.com/@arsenicculturehttps://instagram.com/arsenicculturehttps://tiktok.com/@arsenicculturehttps://www.facebook.com/arsenicculture/https://x.com/arsenicculture

We love the fall. The leaves change colors. The temperature gets colder. Stouts and Barleywines appear on the shelves. Autum brings so many wonderful changes. Evil Twin has brewed over a 1000 beers in their NYC brewery. How do we know? They released a beer called Batch No 1000 Brewed in NYC. This is an old ale made with maple syrup. While it's not a stout or a barleywine, it is a 13% ABV big boy. Danish brewers Bad Seed don't show up on shelves in Sweden very often. It's no surprise that Stefan found this in Copenhagen. Bourbon Barrel Aged Colossus 2023 is a English barleywine aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. It's keeping us warm for sure. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #barleywine #oldale #barrelaged

The USS Cyclops was a US Navy supply ship that went missing while sailing from Brazil to Baltimore in 1918. No trace of her was ever found and she remains missing to this day with no sign of her whereabouts or answers on the circumstances of her vanishing. This a bizarre mystery as the Cyclops was reported to have a bizarre culture, a captain who was a suspected German spy and who may have plotted against him. Could have all of this led to the Cyclops vanishing? Its all here on Brewstilled with a Bourbon Barrel Aged beer from Prairie Artisan Ales as the beer pairing.

So, the guys decided to put it all together by drinking the Dragon's Milk White, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout from the New Holland Brewing Company (https://dragonsmilk.com/dragons-milk-white). Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy (http://eatdrinksmokeshow.com) host Eat! Drink! Smoke! (http://facebook.com/eatdrinksmoke) recorded live at Blend Bar Cigar (http://blendbarcigar.com) in Indianapolis, IN. Along with the Dragon's Milk White, the guys smoked The American cigar from J.C. Newman (https://www.jcnewman.com/the-american-cigar/). There's a bipartisan movement in Congress to get the FDA out of regulating premium cigars. Tony explains why this is a great idea that is long overdue. A North Carolina restaurant has added a 20% gratuity called a ‘Fair Wage Service Fee' to every bill for dine-in customers. The restaurant owner sees the fee as a method to close the wage gap between staff who did not make tips and those who did. Will customers go along with this new fee? Should they? Meanwhile in Texas, a restaurant chain is offering teenagers the opportunity to earn $50,000 as an attempt to lure workers to seek gainful employment. The process involves hiring teens and training them in-house to move into management. Will this be the new way business hire people? There is a new weight loss tool which gets wired into a patient's mouth that looks like some sort of torture device. The fellas describe it, and list the many reasons why it's a bad idea. About Beverages posted its first podcast way back in 2009, but its origins go back farther than that. We had discussed doing a beverage-based podcast as far back as 2007, based on the fact that we loved talking about beverages of all kinds. The beverage that was the original source for these early discussions is coffee. Back in the mid 90’s we were both working in the gourmet coffee industry, learning about how to evaluate coffee and discovering all of the amazing flavors and aromas that the palate is capable of detecting. We realized that these skills transcended all beverages and also included food. It took a few years, but this eventually led to the birth of About Beverages. We mention this because for this episode, we will go back to the beverage that inspired us all of those years ago, but with a twist. We will be trying Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee. This combines two of our favorite things. We have already mentioned how we feel about coffee, but we also have an appreciation for the many nuances bourbon has to offer and Blanton’s has long been at the top of the list. Andrew happened to see a post for this one night and and acted quickly to order some. We don’t know too much about the coffee, so any additional information you may have to share will be greatly appreciated. What did we think? What do you think? Alex Lee is now officially the Kiepersol Winemaker! On this episode, we talk about Kiepersol Bourbon Barrel-aged Merlot, the 2016 vintage of the Bourbon Barrel Merlot and how unique it is to have a Winery, Distillery and Vineyard all on the same property. "If anyone orders a Merlot, I AM NOT **** DRINKING MERLOT." - Sideways (movie from 2004) Sideways the movie gave Merlot sales such a bad wrap for many years, but Merlot is a really a high-quality grape and wine throughout the world. At Kiepersol, we especially love our Merlot and what the East Texas Terrior expresses in our wine! Kiepersol Merlot is not as bold as Cab Sauv, but has very fruit-forward characteristics. This makes for a bottle of very delicious wine and it pairs so well with a nice dinner meal. Kiepersol Wines are made to be very comfortable wines and highlight fruit-forward characteristics. Since we've had such success with our Merlot, we've embraced it by taking our Kiepersol Bourbon Barrels, which aged Jimmy's Bourbon and started aging our Kiepersol Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in those barrels! This allows for the marriage between the Kiepersol Merlot and the bourbon soaked barrels which add flavor to the wine in a wonderful way. With the Holidays coming up, this wine pairs really well with those smokey meats and hearty meals. Come visit us or purchase this wine online: shop.kiepersol.com

Put Cider in the Penny was recorded at SILO Distillery in Windsor, Vermont in August of 2019. I had been wanting to catch up with Nicole LeGrande Leibon, every since she moved on from making cider at Farnum Hill Cider in Lebanon, New Hampshire.  She arrived at SILO to make cider in late 2018. She quickly got SILO set up with a Semi dry cider (sold in cans) and a Bourbon Barrel Aged cider (sold in 750ml bottles). In additon to her role as cidermaker, she has also stepped into the role of assistant distiller under Erin Bell. Erin Bell began working at SILO working the marketing end of things, but found herself distilling in 2015. Erin Bell and Nicole LeGrande Leibon | SILO Distillery   SILO was founded in 2012 and is situated in the Artisan Park, that is also home to a number of craft producers, like Harpoon Brewery (which also has City Roots Cider) and Blake Hill Preserves and Vermont Cheese Company. The location is right off of Interstate 91 and there is a Tasting Room that is open year round. In this chat we learn a bit about Erin’s background and approach to distilling along with how Nicole has integrate the copper still into helping her with reductive cider. Reductive cider will often smell eggy and though there is nothing wrong with the cider, the eggy off smells must be removed. One solution to removing the off odor is to add a copper penny to one’s cup. For a cider maker like Nicole who is managing a whole lot of cider, the SILO copper still came in very handy for removing the off odor. Federalist Bourbon Barrel-Aged Red Blend

CheapWineFinder Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2019 9:52

The StoryThe Federalist Bourbon Barrel-Aged Red Blend 2016 is 76% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Carignane sourced from vineyards in the Mendocino County AVA of Northern California. This blend is aged in American oak casks for 6 months (35% new oak) and then transferred to Bourbon barrels (they do not specify the whiskey brand) for another 6 months. American oak has a more open grain than French oak and can impart more oak seasoning to wine, wine purists say it adds too much oak flavor. They say French oak is more subtle and nuanced and easier to control and is almost always used with wines that are meant to be aged. For drink-it-now wines, American oak, especially wines that are aged in oak for a shorter period of time, can add more flavor in less time.Which leads us to wine barrels versus bourbon barrels. When wine oak barrels are produced the cooperage flames the inside to toast the interior of the barrel. Different levels of toast impart different flavors according to the winemaker's specification. Bourbon barrels are charred, whiskey has stronger flavors and higher alcohol content and more aggressive flavors are needed to add complementary notes. So lightly toasted American oak is too much for "fine wine drinkers", charred whiskey barrels is about 10 steps too far. Since the barrel previously contained Bourbon, those whiskey flavors have seeped into the oak and they too will be imparted into the wine. The flavor profile for Bourbon Barrel-Aged should have flavors added that are not typically present in regular bottlings. If the winemaker has a delicate hand in putting these elements together this should be an interesting experience. The alcohol is 14.5%.The Tasting NotesThe color is dark, but see-thru garnet reb with black highlights. The nose is more subdued than I expected, toasty vanilla, baking spices, red berries, a touch of smoke, bacon fat, blackberry, there is a lot going on, but the aromas are laid-back. The Bourbon flavors are well integrated with the Red wine flavors, this is a big, bold Red, but not over the top. It tastes of blackberry, mocha coffee, pepper, spice, coconut cream, vanilla, and orange zest. The mid-palate offers tart cranberry, tea, milk chocolate, and exotic, slightly rough spice. There are many flavors to find in this Red blend. Considering all the American oak and the Bourbon influence this still tastes like a Merlot/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The finish is large and long. The Summary * Bourbon Barrel-Aged red wine is an acquired taste, not everyone will enjoy the added flavor. I enjoy it, it is a nice change of pace, a fun experiment. I don't think I would place it in the regular rotation, but it does have a place on my wine schedule. * There seem to be several Bourbon Barrel wine brands on the market at the moment. My advice is don't go too inexpensive, there are several offerings around or under $10. These wine usually don't have a budget for regular oak wine barrels and get their oak influence by alternative means, which probably indicates they get their bourbon barrel influence by other means (staves, oak chips, flavored oak powder). Stick with wine in a price range that uses decent oak barrels, around $15 is a good start.

Episode Notes It’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum, and once again I’m your companion as we face down that massive craft brew aisle in search of the hidden treasures we’ve been missing out on all along. This week we’re taking a look at Velvet Merkin Bourbon Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout by Firestone Walker brewing in Paso Robles, CA. Does this one cover all the necessary. . .areas? Let’s find out!Velvet Merkin is a limited release from Firestone Walker—so fancy that it comes only in a 12-ounce bottle concealed within its own cardboard box. Removing it from the box and pouring it into the glass we find a black and creamy beer that swallows all light that attempts to pass through it. Sniffing the beer I smell charred wood and deep caramel with ton of malt backbone and a little bit of vanilla. The scent is complex, intriguing and makes me want to dive right in. But what about the taste? Velvet Merkin comes on a little less aggressively that I was expecting based on that powerful aroma. There is coffee and some nuttiness right up front. These two flavors resolve into something that resembles a dark toffee flavor with maybe just a little bit of chicory in the background. The beer drinks smooth and not overly thick, which is a pleasant surprise as well. The oatmeal keeps it nice and smooth so that it’s not dense, just mellow enough to drink the full twelve ounces without needing to stop for a rest break. It’s also not too sweet which is a nice surprise considering all of the candied notes that are present throughout. It’s also not acidic, though there is just enough coffee bitterness to keep the beer balanced throughout. Velvet Merkin is a luxury beer. Drinking it is like driving a really nice car—it’s going to be hard to go back to your old ride after this one. That being said, it also comes at a luxury price. It will run you about ten dollars for the twelve-ounce bottle. But if you’ve got a little extra coin to spend, this is hands down one of my favorite stouts of all time. There is a strange little discrepancy in terms of the ABV. Firestone Walker’s website lists it as 8.5% but the bottle I drank listed it as 7.8%. Either way, it’s exactly strong enough. It appears that this one is going to be around a bit longer, though the “vintage” will change as the batches are barrel aged for one year. Nonetheless, don’t sleep on it and grab yourself a bottle before it’s retired again! Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I stay with Firestone Walker to try out their XXII Anniversary ale. Does this one stand up to the pretention of being named with Roman numerals? We’ll find out next week. Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes.Don’t forget to let me know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Season 2, Episode 7 - The time has come. The moment has arrived. This week is part one of our epic blind tasting of bourbon barrel-aged stouts from across the United States. We’ve been hyping these episodes for a few weeks now, and they have finally arrived. Here’s the premise of these shows: Episode 7 (part 1) is going to be the introduction of the blind tasting, and why the beers were selected. We’re going to drink four of the nine beers, and rate them according to aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and then a final overall rating. Episode 8 (part 2) will feature the final five beers and the results of the blind tasting will be revealed. But, let’s take a step back and briefly discuss how this came about. The Blind Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout Bout Back when Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout (BCBS henceforth in this post) was released in 2014, beer geeks on the internet went apeshit trying to find this beer. Our friends on social media posted pictures of this beer being purchased by the case, and Black Friday officially became known as BCBS day for all of us (beer geeks). The ironic part about all of this is that Goose Island Beer Co. is owned by AB-InBev (ABI henceforth in this post), who to many beer geeks, is the “enemy” of the craft beer movement. They are owned by a macro brewery, to put it in simple terms. BCBS is a macro beer. Sure, it’s still made by the hard working and passionate folks at the Fulton Street Brewery (Goose Island Beer Co.) in Chicago, Illinois, but that brewery is exactly what ABI purchased back in 2011, along with the Goose Island brand. Now, before you write us a nasty email telling us that “ABI didn’t buy the Goose Island brewpubs, and that’s where the beer is made, so technically it’s not a macro beer”, go ahead and pump your brakes, homeboy. This beer is brewed at Fulton Street, and it’s a macro brew. As long as you’re willing to concede to the fact that by purchasing BCBS that you’re purchasing an ABI product, then we’re all good. Just because Goose Island Beer Co. is now owned by ABI doesn’t mean that BCBS is now a “quality compromised” beer. ABI actually bought Goose Island Beer Co. to help expand the brewery and essentially, get more BCBS to the masses. BCBS is still a great beer. Hell, Goose Island was the first brewery to put stout in bourbon barrels, and they’ve pretty much perfected it at this point. ABI bought this company to get a leg in the craft beer door as it were, and screwing with this beer would be, well, idiotic. That being said, this beer brings a lot of hype along with it, and that’s precisely why we decided to do this blind tasting. Does this beer live up to the hype? Let’s find out! We picked nine bourbon barrel-aged stouts. We tried to keep this tasting as pure as possible by eliminated any beers that have known adjuncts in them, such as vanilla, coffee, and cacao nibs. We wanted stout aged in bourbon barrels. That’s what BCBS is, and you can’t compare this beer fairly to others made with adjuncts. We also wanted fresh examples of each beer. As fresh as possible, anyway… In no particular order, here are the beers we chose and were able to acquire: · Firestone Walker Brewing Co. – Parabola, 2014· Goose Island Beer Co. – Bourbon County Brand Stout, 2014· Hangar 24 Craft Brewery – Pugachev’s Cobra, 2014· The Bruery – Black Tuesday, 2014· Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Narwhal, 2014· Dark Horse Brewing Company – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Plead The 5th, 2014· Bell’s Brewery – Black Note Stout, 2014· Bottle Logic Brewing – Darkstar November, 2014· Avery Brewing Company – Uncle Jacob’s Stout, 2012 We have a special guest pouress for the next couple of shows, who is also a 4B Patron on Patreon, Ms. Dana Parker (@MissTurkeyBowl). Dana is the only one at this point who knows which beers are which. The beers were kept outside of our studio, and she brought them to us randomly. We’re not going to list the tasting notes on the blog post, but you can view them on this week’s show outline. Next week in episode 8, we’ll drink the final five beers and announce the results of the blind tasting. So, until then… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Special shoutouts go to “Cougar” Steve Saavedra for hookup on the Michigan beers, and Scott McElhone for inspiring the titles of episodes 7 and 8. Four Brewers Patrons get 50% off Firkfest tickets!
