This a Belgian strong ale is a big beer. Clocking in with a massive 15.5% abv, you know where all those abv points are. Finally we have a Hoof Hearted imperial stout. All My Friends Are Dead is a 13.%% double-mashed stout with roasted hazelnuts, vanilla, coffee and touch of milk sugar. It's a great way to send off the year. You want fries with that? While it’s a common refrain at your local drive-through, it isn’t often necessarily associated with beer. And by associated, I don’t mean accompanying, I mean in the beer, like in the recipe for the beer. That brings us to this week’s docket for News & Brews where we cracked open a few cold cans of Drop the Fries, yet another quirky creation from the hooligans at Hoof Hearted Brewing Co. It’s a double IPA that boldly attempts to mimic the flavors of dipping french fries into a Wendy’s Frosty and so it’s alleged recipe includes cacao nibs, vanilla, milk sugar and french fries. How does that go down? Listen and find out. Meanwhile, in other Hoof Hearted news, the brewery has expanded the hours of its 4,000-square-foot taproomin Marengo. The space, which features 12 taps and ample art from their Philadelphia-based creative director Thom Lessner (the man behind the brewery’s distinctive cans as well), is now open 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Up until this summer the space previously was open for can release events only. Owners Trevor Williams, Jarrod Bichon and Ryan Bichon renovated the taproom space last year from its more rag-tag origin to its new iteration featuring a small arcade, front and back patios and a horseshoe pit and bocce ball court coming soon. It hold around 175 total. And by associated, I don't mean accompanying, I mean in the beer, like in the recipe for the beer. That brings us to this week's docket for News & Brews where we cracked open a few cold cans of Drop the Fries, yet another quirky creation from the hooligans at Hoof Hearted Brewing Co. It's a double IPA that boldly attempts to mimic the flavors of dipping french fries into a Wendy's Frosty and so it's alleged recipe includes cacao nibs, vanilla, milk sugar and french fries. How does that go down? Listen and find out. Meanwhile, in other Hoof Hearted news, the brewery has expanded the hours of its 4,000-square-foot taproomin Marengo. The space, which features 12 taps and ample art from their Philadelphia-based creative director Thom Lessner (the man behind the brewery's distinctive cans as well), is now open 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Up until this summer the space previously was open for can release events only. Owners Trevor Williams, Jarrod Bichon and Ryan Bichon renovated the taproom space last year from its more rag-tag origin to its new iteration featuring a small arcade, front and back patios and a horseshoe pit and bocce ball court coming soon. It hold around 175 total. This week the city of brotherly love is reestablished in the borough of Brooklyn, New york as Steve’s big brother Matt joins us with a handful of east coast ales to throw into our tummy pails! A recent work trip to the hipster-laden neighborhoods of B-town resulted in a suitcase full of brews that we can’t get our hands on out in the good ol’ Califor-Nai-Ay including Interboro’s Premiere Double Dry Hoppped IPA and Other Half Brewing’s Dream Layers Oat Cream IPA and Feels Like Outer Space American Imperial (AKA Triple) IPA. These tasty suds are complimented by a bevy of brews news about recent review brewery, Trillium, and their employment woes as well as diving deep into their heavy metal-filled childhoods - leading all the way up to their recent visit to the Decibel Metal & Beer fest at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, where they crushed can releases from Hoof Hearted, Wake Brewing and a handful of others as their ears guzzled sick riffs with their noses inhaling dank spliffs! Podcast 34: The Maine Event! We're all back together and we're gonna hit it hard with some segments and anniversary parties! Abjuration and Cinderlands both celebrated 1 year this week! Shout out to @canspgh - follow them on instagram! They're posting all the can releases from local breweries so follow along and get some cans! This week's brewery of the week is Maine Beer Company! Fairly new to Pittsburgh, but you can find them at all the great spots around Pittsburgh and in Boston. Alex did his research and found out some very cool things they're a part of and how they've developed their brand. Beers: Lunch - IPA 7.0% (Jake) Another One - IPA 7.0% (Nick/Alex) Obviously we discuss the can [bottle] design and the simplicity is incredibly appealing and extremely recognizable. “Do What's Right” is Maine's motto and we discuss what that means and how they're part of the 1% to the Planet non-profit organization. Nick and Sara went to Cinderlands for their can release on Sunday after their 1 year anniversary Pajama Party on Saturday. They were first in line, btw. We discuss the can design and the anniversary glasses, which we're in love with. Saturday night Nick and Sara hit up Abjuration in McKees Rocks. If you haven't been, you need to get there. Really cool spot with super unique beers and a cool mix of independent brewing and the theatre in the building. Beers: RBWv1.1 - Rice Barleywine - 11% MIPAv1.0 - Milkshake IPA - 7.3% BA-RW v1.2 - Barrel Aged Rye Barleywine - 11.7% Abjuration still has cans of both the RBW and MIPA available. Alex wanted to make this an ASMR episode by eating a cucumber very close to the mic. So we're sorry. Sara and Nick give their reviews of the anniversary beers from Abjuration. Alex adds in his experience with Milkshake IPAs. In the mix with the milkshake IPAs we hit on Grist House's Kaboom Kandy series and how we're excited to try Kapow Kandy. Jake tells us the story of his most recent Treehouse visit. He got a new beer called Snow (a wheat double IPA) and he's really excited about it. He drank Trail Magic (German Pils) on the podcast. Jake reminisces over a year of Cinderlands and his absolute love of their beer. The next beer we sampled is called Just Baked by Hitchhiker. A beer brewed with Samoa cookies, this beer is super dark and flavorful. We launched into a conversation about our favorite Girl Scout Cookies. Lebanon, PA) released RGB triple IPA this week sparking the Triple/Imperial debate, again. Jake checked out a place called Cheeky Monkey Brewery and Cidery. Jake was pretty happy with the beer there. Jake tells us about his all day bender, mimosa flight included. Alex has a wild night with a watermelon. Beer #2 - Venus Rising - Foreign Objects (Bronx, NY) 6.8% - Citra and Calypso hops make for a bitier finish, not as good as Mercury everyone agreed. But we do endorse Foreign Objects for sure.
