Welcome to the Boozebuddy Update. For you Boozebuddies today I have - Level Up Wine, Daniels vs Spaniels, & Best Breweries Level Up your red wine drinking with these tips to get the most flavor out of your bottle. It's actually pretty amazing how flat red wine can taste if it's too chilled, you tried to drink it without aeration, and you have it in the wrong glass. Let thatwine breathe, allow the temperature to come up, and have it in the proper glass - it could be your favorite wine. Jack Daniels, who believes they are defending the trademark of their Old No 7 brand. This battle began when VIP products came out with their Bad Spaniels squeaky toy that used a similar shape, font, and black label on their dog toy to parody the whiskey with some low-brow humor. Parody is usually protected, but did this one go too far? Humility is one of those fleeting virtues in our world, and it feels like we need a healthy dose. Being comfortable with what we know and what we don't know, what we're good at and what we're not, and not trying to live in hubris and pretense. It's not easy, but it is really important. In this episode, Randy and Kyle talk about humility, pride, certainty, apophatic theology, and more. In the most humble of ways, of course. The beer we tasted in this episode is Flesh to Stone barleywine from Bottle Logic. Disneyland Adventureland Treehouse will Return with a New Look in 2023There are more details about the future of the treehouse in Adventureland at Disneyland park. When it reopens in 2023 the Adventureland Treehouse will be themed after Walt Disney's Swiss Family Robinson tree house--just as it is in Walt Disney World. This is likely because Disney is working on a remake of the 1960 movie as a new Swiss Family series on Disney+.The renewed treehouse will have new environments created among the branches of the giant tree on the shores of the Jungle River. From the mother's music den to the young sons' nature room to the teenage daughter's astronomer's loft, everything is created from found objects, natural resources, and pure ingenuity (just like the Disney fairies do). More news to come as it's released--Walt Disney World Pool Closure The Oak Manor leisure pool in Magnolia Bend at Disney's Port Orleans Resort Riverside was recently closed for a brief refurbishment.Ol' Man Island and other leisure pools around the resort will remain open and available. Episode 163 : The Beerly Week Year 2021 Nick and Sara are in the basement talking about the year 2021. We dive right into beers as Nick drinks the BAPF (Big Ass Pallet Fire) by Voodoo and Bottle Logic. Nick doubles down on False Kingdom being his IPA of the year. Sara keeps her best beers as the recent ones. Her stand out was Prototype's sour beer from Drink the Cookie Table which we can't remember the name of. We take a trip down memory lane and recap Nick's first beer of 2021 and talk more about Voodoo. Sara and Nick re-cap our guests of the year and what we learned. Sara tells a 2 sentence horror story about dropping wax bottles of beer. We praise StuntPig for their delicious food at Old Thunder's Anniversary party. Obviously we mention Bridge City Brinery. Nick claims his top beer of 2021 is Other Half's Wangies based on taste and name. We then switch gears and rave about Three Rivers Craft Beer Week and talk a bunch about how the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild absolutely crushed the TRBW. We welcomed back beer festivals in 2021 including our favorite Drink The Cookie Table. We also touched on the Barrel and Flow fest. We cover some upcoming beer fests and what kind of beer festivals we're going to visit this year. After fests, we move into our beers of the year. This conversation is a bit to follow, but it's worth it. As we wind down this episode we give our in memoriam and talk nostalgia about Roundabout and Couch Brewery. Thanks again for listening! We would like to start out by saying that we hope wherever you are, you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe during these unprecedented times. We are continuing to do what we can to provide distraction and give you a beverage related safe haven to visit. Besides these stand alone podcasts, we are also live most Thursday nights around 630PM PST at twitch.tv/AboutBeverages. That is when we record our individual episodes, but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. We interact with our audience and discuss a wide variety of topics. No matter what direction it goes, it is always fun and informative. As for this episode, we once again turn to one of our favorite categories (beer) and styles (IPA). The beverage we will be trying is the Recursion IPA version 9.0 from Bottle Logic in Anaheim, California. We have not tried many offerings from this brewery, but what we have tried we have really liked. There have been other versions of this beer (one of which Keith had tried), but this one is the culmination of the Recursion experiment and was chosen as the best version of this west coast IPA series. Recursion is a cool word and if you aren’t familiar with its meaning, we recommend that you look it up. Perhaps right after popping open a cold can of the beer which uses the word in its name. Wait, did we need a spoiler alert there? What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
Explore our favorite sports moments with us as we also explore Pizza Port, Coronado, AleSmith and Bottle Logic beers.
We recorded a mammoth session at North Brewing Co with head brewer Seb, head of marketing Sarah, co owner / founder Chris, as well as the Premier Hop team and our great friends @thebeerdedbeerbloke and @beerd__af in the brewery. Our conversations were supported by big ass stouts from Other Half, Bottle Logic, The Bruery, Trillium, J. Wakefield as well as brand new beers from North, Emperor x Northern Monk. We talked for over 3 hours so this is part 1 of 2. The beer that we brewed (A Triple IPA, obvs) is going to launch in April. It was going to be at Hop City but we all know what’s going on and why. There will be plenty to go round so we will all have something to drink when we are self quarantined. Cover art is kindly supplied by the one and only Refold Hope you enjoy the show! If you are a part of the Arizona craft beer scene, you know Justin Evans. And if you somehow don’t know Justin, you know his bar, The Wandering Tortoise. Oh, and if you don’t know the Tortoise, you may have heard of The Sleepy Whale, which Justin and some others are opening in Chandler in April. If none of that rings a bell, then Hops on Birch, a craft beer institution in the pines of Flagstaff, should. Recently, Justin and his group purchased that spot, too. Not bad for a guy who at one time thought he would go into law after attending Anthem College. “I got a paralegal degree from there,” Evans told TapThatAZ. “That’s when I thought my career path was going to be being a lawyer. “Then I got through two years of school and I realized that’s not what I wanted to do.” Evans went on to say he had been in the food and beverage industry before, and the idea of sitting behind a desk just didn’t appeal to him. He said the “freeness” of the food and beverage industry did, but across various stops in that field came to the realization that he wanted to one day have his own spot. Following stops at OHSO Arcadia and the Pig’s Meow (now The Whining Pig Arcadia), Evans – along with Shay Gau, whom he met at the Pig’s Meow – looked to open what became the Tortoise. Many people have at one time considered the idea of starting a business, but Evans, Gau and the other partners, put up their own money, took out the loans and started looking for a place. They found one in the Sprouts parking lot, but that fell apart due to the grocery chain not wanting another beer seller in their area. “So we wasted about three months trying to negotiate that deal, we were really drug around on that,” Evans said of the Sprouts lot. “And we rushed to find something else with a couple of stipulations: We wanted to be on Indian School, we wanted to be west on Indian School. “And somewhere still appealing to my customer base at Pig.” Eventually, Gau found on a location off of 24th Street and Indian School with about 1,200 square feet of space. Evans was uneasy at first because of its lack of parking, but after about three days the lease was signed. Within a year they expanded even more, and since then they added a parking lot. All of it proved to be necessary because of not only the atmosphere created in the space but the amazing beer list that has been consistently provided. That, of course, does not happen by accident, with Evans and his team building relationships not only across the Valley but throughout all of Arizona and even into other markets. “You know, the first time we got Pueblo Vida in there…it still blows my mind to this day,” Evans said. If Evans is amazed by the beers he can get, imagine what everyone else thinks. Much of that success is directly due to the relationships Evans and his team have built. Be it Pueblo Vida, Arizona Wilderness or Dark Sky, or others like Modern Times, Pure Project or Bottle Logic, if it’s highly thought of, there’s a good chance you’ll see it at the Tortoise. And lately you are even starting to see beers named after the Tortoise’s pets, such as King Koda, Super Duper King Mr. and Good Girl Pearl, which are named after Evans’ and Gau’s dogs and made by The Shop and Wren House, respectively. Those are not the only collaborations the Tortoise has been a part of. They even had one with Modern Times, Technodrome, which was the first collaboration the brewery had ever done with a beer bar. “We did it on the L.A. system,” Evans said. Indeed, it’s not just about Central Phoenix. As noted, the Tortoise will soon be joined by the Sleepy Whale and Hops on Birch, with the former being in the East Valley and the latter in Flagstaff. “That was a space that I was approached about,” Evans said of the Whale. “I looked at it and was like, ‘this is just fantastic.’ I couldn’t say no to that.” Evans said he wasn’t in any rush to open another place, but instead this was just a matter of something seeming right. As for Hops on Birch, Evans said that was a “dream come true” but one he said he took advantage of only after he got his wife’s approval. That last line came with a laugh, but Evans – who also has a new baby daughter -- admitted there is plenty on his plate these days. But if history is any indication, while it may mean a lot of work for Evans, it will also mean plenty of good beer for even more people who live in the 48th state.

During FOBAB week I got a chance to do an episode with Bottle Logic while they did a collaboration beer at More Brewing. Well, while doing that, Mike Pallen from Mikerphone happen to walk into the More taproom, so I asked for a minute of his time as well. What happened was an awesome 1 hour conversation between Shaun Berns (More Brewing), Mike Pallen (Mikerphone Brewing), and Brandon Buckner (Bottle Logic Brewing).
Thanks to Shaun at More Brewing, I got to piggy back on his collab with Bottle Logic and get a conversation in with Wes, Dylan, Brandon, and Steve from BL! Their beers are legendary in the secondary and trade market, so talking to them during FOBAB week just seemed to make sense. Just an awesome group of humble guys who are still having fun after 5 years!
For the first time the gang is all here! We all join forces to tackle some big maple stouts by Transient, Pure and Bottle Logic, and Blake brings some serious maple syrup knowledge. Visit www.snobeery.com for more photos and info on this episode!
It feels like Orange County has more and more good liquid to go around. We express some concerns for my first brewery love, celebrate some brewery anniversaries, and love on Bottle Logic just a little more.

(NSFW) This episode finds us in Goleta, California with the boys from 12 West and Grand Canyon Brewing. The fine folks at Captain Fatty’s Brewing invited them out to brew up a couple collabs, and they were nice or crazy enough to invite us along. After a hell of a road trip, checking in on the So. Cal craft scene to see what Bottle Logic, Monkish, Phantom Carriage and a few other fine breweries were up to, we made our way up the coast to Goleta near Santa Barbara. We sampled more beers, soaked in the amazing hospitality and were treated to some amazing tacos. This was a super fun trip, and resulted in a super fun episode, join in and listen to the awesomeness that goes into a collab when some incredible brewers hook up and do their thing! This week's featured artist is Josh Emrich. We came to learn of Josh and his business through the work that he has done for Bottle Logic and many other breweries in the craft beer space. Learn of Josh's love of movie covers, hard work and how he tells stories through his imagery and branding. A great story of work-life balance and priority that resonated with me and is an example to many out there. Really proud of this episode, its message and to be able to learn from Josh. An extremely talented designer with great perspective and passion that I am sure you will enjoy. This episode pairs great with hot pockets, NES video games and grilled cheese sandwiches. Cheers.
We are on our second stop in the great state of California on a tour of some great breweries. This episode highlights 3 breweries in the Los Angeles area. We kicked it at Bottle Logic for a day of their Week of Logic. We also stopped by the much acclaimed Monkish Brewing Company and also The Bruery and The Bruery Terreux. Want to send a special shoutout to Mr. K's Liquor Mart on Orangethorpe Ave. Cheers!
The boys’ original review of Bottle Logic Brewing was such a hyper-specific themed affair, that they decided to head back to those mad scientists of the Anaheim beer scene, and give them a more thorough taste. Paring their selection down to basically IPA’s and Stouts, the style selection is limited, but, as you’ll hear, very varied in flavor. Steve & Joey guzzle down Cobra Attack WCIPA, Hammond’s Amber Ale, Jungle Hunt WCIPA, Upon Further Review Coffee WCIPA, Hyborian Age Hazy IPA, Pallet Treasure Imperial Chocolate Salted Nut Roll Stout, Sonic Rings Hazy IPA, Robots in Disguise Hazy DIPA, and Red Rover Imperial Red Ale. Now doubling down more on nerd culture over pulp science, does Bottle Logic earn the street cred with these two beer geeks...or end up just another poser trying to be an O.G.?
The entire crew is together for a dive into beer destination vactions (beercations). First, we review the best beers we drank this week and what's going on in craft beer at the moment. Then we taste beers from Oregon breweries deGarde and Great Notion, California breweries Bottle Logic and SARA, and taste brews from Hill Farmstead and Trillium. It's good to have everyone together! Anaheim Breweries; Part Two - Beer Harder. After the ghost crew gave Anaheim breweries a good tongue lashing in the Disney beer nugget, they decided to give the city a chance to redeem itself in the ears of beer drinkers everywhere. This whirlwind day of SoCal suds started off at Unsung Brewery, a newcomer to the Anaheim scene with a bitching comic book theme and some throughly tasty brews. Then we move over to Bruery Terreux where they make a good beer, and then ruin it by putting a bunch a random shit it in. And the finale of the day was at Bottle Logic, which drew in Engineer Bob with some Star Wars themed beers and won everyone over with their delicious, delicious offering. All and all, not a bad day for beer. That'll do, Anaheim. That'll do.

Season 3, Episode 45 – This week on the show, Temecula’s Beer Ambassador, aka John Ryti, joins us with some new stuff from Ironfire Brewing and Relentless Brewing, and we also try a little beer named Space Trace from Bottle Logic Brewing. This week, we are happy to welcome back our good friend and beer geek, John Ryti. He brought us some new beers from Relentless Brewing Company (first time on the show, by the way) and a hop-bomb from Ironfire Brewing Company that was tapped right off of the bright tank, so you know it’s fresh. Growler Tags from Relentless Brewing Company Temecula is quite the hot spot in the Inland Empire brewing scene, and if you have yet to visit and check out the breweries around the area, you’re totally missing out. Ironfire has been a mainstay for us locals over the past few years, while Relentless is the new kid on the block who’s already proving to be a must-visit brewery. Bottle Logic Brewing – Space Trace (photo: Jessica Rice McNew) We wrap up the show with Bottle Logic Brewing’s newest barrel-aged-beer-geek-bomb called Space Trace. This beer is their barrel-aged German Chocolate Cake Stout (which we also drink on the show this week) and DUDE, it is amazing. Much thanks to Matt Robertson at Bottle Logic for hitting us up and giving us a bottle. (It’s so fuggin’ good…) BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 3, Episode 10 – We’re back with part 2 of our visit to Bottle Logic Brewing in Anaheim, California, and this week, we’re saddling up some unicorns. Get your Four Brewers “Metal Logo” shirt!Available for a limited time: fourbrewers.com/metal Before we get into the beers, it should be known that Greg’s cask ale festival called “Firkfest” is going down on March 19, 2016 in Anaheim, California. We’ve been promoting this event for good reason—it’s a unique festival to Southern California, featuring 30 breweries and 50 cask beers, ranginga from the more traditional cask conditioned beers to firkins with chocolate, peppers, or whatever else brewers want to add to their standard release and one-off beers. Get your tickets at firkfest.com. Barrels at Bottle Logic Brewing We kick off the show right where we left off with part 1, drinking some German Chocolate Cake. The beer lives up to its namesake, and we find out that this beer is also what runs through Nagel’s veins (he’s German…bad joke). This beer is served on both nitro and CO2 at Bottle Logic’s tasting room, which is a common practice of Bottle Logic. Good idea for those who don’t enjoy nitrogen infused brew. While we’re drinking this beer, we discuss the unique technique that Bottle Logic employs to add ingredients like cacao nibs, vanilla, and even wood to their beers while they’re still in the fermentor. Moar Barrels! Next up is a beer that has yet to be released, Bottle Logic’s brettanomyces brew, Some Assembly Required. The bottle we had on the show was midway through its bottle conditioning and a bit warm, so it was a bit explosive. This didn’t stop us from thoroughly enjoying the beer. Definitely a unicorn worth capturing when Bottle Logic releases it. Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, a barrel sample of the renowned Bottle Logic barrel-aged stout, Fundamental Observation. This beer rocks! This was only a barrel sample we had on the show—it was flat and room temperature—and it was already amazing. F.O. is no hype-whale, it’s the real deal, from what we could taste, and this was only a single barrel sample. While enjoying this beer, we talk about how Bottle Logic designs a beer that is destined to be barrel-aged. It’s not as simple as making a stellar stout and throwing in a barrel. Big, BIG thanks to Wes and Brandon for having us at Bottle Logic. They’re off to a great start for a two year-old brewery, and we couldn’t be more proud to have them brewing their beer in Southern California. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Beers From Bottle Logic Brewing Shooting each other in the junk with laser beams sounded like fun at the time, but drinking Bottle Logic Brewing beers in their barrel room seemed like a better idea. Speaking of shooting each other in the junk with lasers, it turns out that She Shot First with galaxy, citra and centennial in our gaping, carbonite mouths. Although hoppy wheats may be known for their modern unfortunate landmass times, this beer was birthed on the homestove of Bottle Logic Master Brewer Wes Parker. “Juicy,” says Four Brewers’ Jason Harris, otherwise known as Internet’s Golden Brett, in a nasally, high-pitched voice. Zerø Day juices our mouths with Vermont-style IPA cloud beer. Juice profiles are dialed in, maximum hoppage is achieved, targets are hit, and montages are played with sweaty Bottle Logic brewers listening to “I Need a Hero.” The beer looks like a yellow pair of Juicy Couture sweat pants got dipped in freshly dry hopped beer and wrung out into pint glasses. But, oh if it ain’t juicy and supremely delicious. Wes Parker, Brewmaster at Bottle Logic Berliner Equation w/ Blueberries is next. It’s kettle soured and bursting with fruit. 350 pounds of berries tie our tongues into a quadratic equation, nearly turning us into Violet Beauregarde. Thankfully, we got rolled to the juicing room for squeezing, doopity doo. Expansion for sour beer? Yes! Bottle Logic is creating a sour/brett beer facility. Oh, and spoiler alert. Recursion 8.0 is next. This IPA is surprising software, with 2.5 hexadecimal pounds of dry hop per gigabarrel. Dank.exe is compiled with no bugs. Pee.bat is called. We wrap up part 1 of the Bottle Logic visit with medal-winning Cobaltic Porter. Details are then leaked about their anniversary Week of Logic: Hint: it’s space themed. Season 2, Episode 40 – This week we’re drinking some GABF medal-winning beers. Every year, beer drinkers from all over the United States and the world descend upon Denver, Colorado for the Great American Beer Festival. It’s one of the biggest beer festival we know of, and two of the Four Brewers got to attend this year. 2015 GABF Medal-Winning Beers While the draw and the allure of GABF is the seemingly endless beers available to sample, many people and breweries especially focus on the awards on Saturday morning. Winning a bronze, silver and/or gold medal at GABF is quite prestigious to say the least. The panel of judges at the festival is comprised of the best brewers, beer drinkers, beer writers, and beer enthusiasts from all over the country. Winning a medal at GABF can really catapult a brewery into the stratosphere. Southern California is no stranger to winning metal in Denver. Breweries like Pizza Port, Societe Brewing Company, Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, and countless others from SoCal have dominated in recent years. This year, SoCal took home many medals, even though the landscape of winners outside of California seemed to be much more diverse. This week, we’re focusing on some local breweries that took home some medals. Taps Fish House and Brewery at GABF 2015 First up are two beers from local Orange County and Inland Empire superheroes, Taps Fish House and Brewery. They took home four medals, and also won Mid-Size Brewpub and Mid-Size Brewpub Brewer of the Year for their brewery located in Corona, California. Today, we’re drinking the bronze medal-winning Amend This! and silver medal-winning TAPS Kellerbier. Bottle Logic Brewing Company at GABF 2015 Next up is a brewery that’s fairly new to SoCal but is already a favorite of many local craft beer drinkers, Bottle Logic Brewing from Anaheim, California. Bottle Logic scored two gold medals this year for their dark lager named Lagerithm, and their Baltic porter, Cobaltic Porter, and we’ve got them BOTH on the show. Hells. Yes. Firestone Walker Brewing Company at GABF 2015 Firestone Walker Brewing Co. is definitely no stranger to the stage at GABF. FW really killed this year at the GABF awards, winning five medals and Mid-Size Brewing Company and Mid-Size Brewing Company Brewer of the Year. Thanks to Matt, we were able to get our hands on the bronze-medal winning Sour Opal. 21st Amendment Brewery at GABF Next up is Toaster Pastry from 21st Amendment Brewery. This beer kinda took everyone by storm over the last month, and for good reason—it’s awesome! The hop aroma that comes from a freshly poured pint of this beer is just stellar. The whole room filled with the danky aroma that came from this beer as we opened them in the 4B studio. This beer won a silver medal at GABF, and now we know why. Damn, this is good! 21A took one more silver medal this year for their session beer, MCA. Well, done, 21A! Ritual Brewing Company at GABF 2015 Last, but certainly not least is the new jewel of Inland Empire breweries, Ritual Brewing Company from Redlands, California. Ritual has always kind of flown under the radar, but their beers have always been spot on. The brewery is beautiful, and the folks at Ritual couldn’t be cooler people. They really deserved to win some metal this year. Ritual took home TWO gold medals this year for their imperial stout, Big Deluxe, and for the beer we have on the show today, their barleywine-style ale, Fat Hog. The Great American Beer Festival was great this year. The Brewers Association expanded the available floor space for breweries and attendees, which made for even more beer to choose from and guaranteed that every brewery that wanted to attend, could attend. Our hats are off to the Brewers Association. Really, they did a superb job this year. The complete list of medal winners and award winners at GABF this year can be found here. Hope to you next year! One of the newest additions to the Anaheim area is Bottle Logic Brewing and with the great beer coming out of this location it was a no brainer for us to stop by and talk beer. Sit back, relax, and listen as we talk Milk Stouts with the Owners are Bottle Logic.
Season 1, Episode 21 - This week on the show, we’re all up in the 2014 Great American Beer Festival. The Great American Beer Festival is America’s largest beer festival, and is held once a year in Denver, Colorado. Greg and John were up there for the festivities this year, and needless to say, they were not dissapointed. On the show this week, we’ll be drinking three award-winning beers from three southern California breweries who all won medals this year at GABF for the first time. GABF 2014 Award-winning SoCal Breweries We start the show with Saint Archer Brewing Co.‘s White Ale. The beer took home a gold at GABF this year, and it’s easy to see why–this beer is delicious. This light, clean, and dry witbier bursts with that signature witbier yeast aroma, and is backed up by a refreshing burst of citrus flavor. Saint Archer is a relatively new brewery out of San Diego, California, and they came running out of the gate with some truly great beers. Seeing them win at GABF was no surprise. Next up is Rocco Red from Bootlegger’s Brewery out of Fullerton, California. This beer, along with their Galaxian Barleywine, won bronze at GABF this year. This was also Bottlegger’s first time winning some metal at the fest. Rocco is their Amber ale. It has a quite dominant caramel flavor that hits your palate up front, but is balanced with a nice dryness, so it doesn’t come off too sweet or cloying. It has a pleasant pine characteristic to the aroma, and is an overall excellent beer. Cheers to the Boots team for the win! The final winner from SoCal that we managed to get our hands on is Bottle Logic Brewing‘s Lagerithm, which is an American-style dark lager. It’s pretty rad to see Bottle Logic win gold with this beer style–it’s not an easy beer to brew. Bottle Logic has been pumping out some awesome beers since they opened in February, from their Double Actuator double IPA, to their Tattered Prince French-style saison, and their Hanamachi Japanese-style rice lager. Big cheers go out to the crew at Bottle Logic! A big shoutout also goes to Beachwood BBQ & Brewing for bringing home a gold for Mocha Machine (sooo good!), a silver for Un Atout, and winning the award for Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year. Beachwood continues to impress and dominate at GABF, and we couldn’t be more proud of them. One of the more notable things about the fest for the last couple of years is the My GABFapp (iOS/Android). Every brewery and every beer at GABF this year is in the smartphone app, and the Brewers Association really went above and beyond with the overall design and functionality of the app. Some more excellent news is that there will be an additional 90,000 square feet of floor space added to the festival next year. This means more breweries, more beer, and more beer fans–a win all the way around. John’s photos from this year’s GABF 2014 can be found here. Also, the complete list of medal winners and award winners at GABF this year can be found here. We can’t emphasize enough how rad the GABF experience is, how cool it was to see some old friends, and our gratitude to the Brewers Association for having us GABF this year. It was a blast, and is something every beer drinker should experience. Cheers also go out to all of the winners at the competition this year. Cheers!
