The guys are joined by Terence Sullivan and Byron Wetsch from Sierra Nevada for what turns into a long and highly enjoyable chat. Don't forget that if you're in Melbourne we can deliver you a tasting slab for $90 that contains 24 beers including all of the ones that we discuss in this episode. A reminder too that if you haven't already joined us on Facebook and instagram then you might be missing out on getting the heads up on future episodes that you can be part of! In part 1 of the interview we discuss the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Hazy Little Thing, Wild Little Thing and the 40th Anniversary Ale. We hear about the breweries early failures, but also of the high standards that they have set themselves right from the beginning. We have a frank discussion about current trends in the brewing industry, and whether a brewery like Sierra Nevada feels compelled to follow them. We learn that June 2020 was the breweries biggest month ever, the struggles they had to perfect a hazy and Davydd repeatedly demands to know why Ruthless Rye isn't made any more!
The boys drink and review Sierra Nevada's 40th Anniversary Ale, then talk about the Moon. Why do we always see the man in the moon? Doesn't the moon spit on its axis? If so, why do we always see the same side? The boys discuss this and other interesting features about the moon and the solar system. And where did the moon come from?

1:05 - We're drinking Ommegang's 21st Anniversary Ale - a spiced saison ale co-fermented with New York apple cider. Fun fact: Ommegang, out of Cooperstown, NY, is a sister brewery of Duvel.5:00 - We're jumping back into "Birth Day," season 1 episode 2 of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. We're back in the birthing room and Janine is in the throes of labor.8:30 - In comes the train of ridiculous wives and a Naomi joins Janine on the two-seater birthing stool. 8:50 - It's not lost on Janine or any of us how absurd it is that Naomi is pretending to be in labor. How many wives have been punched by their laboring handmaid by pulling this nonsense.10:33 - Madeline Brewer is brilliant in this labor scene. It is so believable. 14:16 - Why is there no medical interventions available for these precious babies?15:09 - Gilead's extreme fundamentalist mentality regarding the medical care available for newborns feels like an intentional mirroring of the anti choice Christian fundamentalist of today. They're pro birth not pro life.26:07 - The sound of the wind carries us from the present Gilead to a flashback of June in the hospital, waking up to see that Hannah is missing.33:45 - The handmaids are in the birth mobile and heading home. Ofglen is not discreet. Roxy makes a great point that she was drinking spiked punch.36:11 - Back at the Putnam's it's feeding time for baby Angela. 43:05 - The bells toll back at the Waterford's and it's time for Offred to meet Fred.45:20 - Offred is outside the office door and the writing in June's monologue is brilliant.51:48 - Fred wants to play a game with June. Isn't this secret meeting game enough for him?53:48 - Offred gets the first move in scrabble and Roxy has a great take on the nuance of this scene.1:01:59 - We look at all the words they played on the Scrabble board1:08:04 - Fred and Offred say their goodbyes. Offred retreats to her room and the absurdity of the situation hits her.1:10:30 - The upbeat music as June strides out of the house and down the driveway. They really want you to feel good and let your guard down for just a second. But this is Gilead, it's never safe.1:11:42 - The joy comes to a screeching halt as we meet New Ofglen and everything feels a lot more like Gilead now.1:16:55 - Margery points out some of the scenes from the first two episodes of season are almost identical to scenes from season 3 and wonders if this could be a signal that season 4 is going to shift gears in some way. Episode Notes Episode 51: XXII Anniversary Ale by Firestone WalkerIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review! I’m Andrew Burkum, and once again I’m your companion as we face down that massive craft brew aisle in search of the hidden treasures we’ve been missing out on all along. This week we’re taking a look at Anniversary Ale 22 by Firestone Walker brewing in Paso Robles, CA. Is this one worthy of a pedigree of twenty two years? Let’s find out! This special release ale pours dark but not completely opaque with dark browns and ruby reds showing when light is placed behind the glass. There is very little carbonation, which means this one is likely very, very strong. The smell is immediately of molasses. The oak barrels in which the ale is aged are very far forward in the nose, along with plenty of brown sugar and pure malty goodness. Oddly enough, all the way in the background I detect something I can only describe as grape soda. No doubt this is a complex and intriguing beer. But what about the taste? 22 is powerfully sweet and keeps that molasses that I detected in the scent all the way up front. In fact, this concoction might actually be too sweet for someone who isn’t experienced in barrel aged strong ales. The prominent flavors, as the sip develops to swallow are caramel, malt, toffee and definitely some bourbon. There are multiple layers of sweetness here, but it’s like walking into a candy store and sampling one of each. My experience with the beer leaves me wanting just a bit more bitterness, overall. I’m not even getting ay grain character through all the sugar in my mouth. If I had to use this beer for something, I think I would reduce it down and make it into a nice sauce with which I could cook something desserty, like a bread pudding. But although it is a complex and intriguing blend of flavors at the end of the day it’s just too darn sweet for me to recommend it based on my own flavor preferences. This anniversary ale is sold in twelve ounce bottles and contained within a fancy box just like the Velvet Merkin that we tasted last week, and it even contains a nice lengthy writeup inside the box, talking about the creation of the beer and the different brews that were mixed to make it up. Again, this is a premium offering from Firestone Walker—that twelve ounce bottle will run you about thirteen dollars—and it’s available in limited supply, so if you’re intrigued enough to check it out I would hurry up and do so. And be aware that it’s a 12.7% ABV, so you’ll definitely want to sip and not guzzle when you sit down with this one. Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I celebrate an anniversary of my own—the one year birthday of the Two Minute Beer Review! To mark the occasion, I’ll be doing a quickfire review of my experience and some brews from an interesting experience I had in San Francisco this last week, when I took a beer walking tour with a fine guide from SF On Tap. What happens when the tasting team walks to three different San Francisco hot spots to taste the latest and greatest that the City by the Bay has to offer? We’ll find out next week. Oh, and to celebrate our anniversary we’ll be doing a little giveaway too, just to show listeners how much we appreciate you. Stay tuned next week for details! Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes. Don’t forget to let me know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Tweet me @2minutebeer with the number two or drop me an email at 2minutebeer@gmail.com. And if you’re listening to the show on your favorite podcasting app, be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode and leave a review to help other people find the show. That’s all for now, but I’ll see you next week as we continue on our quest to taste all the beer!Have you supported the Phoenix Creative Collective and the Phoenix Podcast Network through Patreon yet? Despite this being a birthday episode, Al is definitely not our Overlord (or is he…..). That being said, pretty good movie talk here. Or, at least hopefully, since one of our hosts is a bit hazy on his memory of this episode. Allegedly, we discussed a kick-ass war movie, what we’ve been watching, MCU timeline quirks, Prime benefits, Once Upon a Deadpool, and much more. It’s exciting stuff, but hopefully not so exciting you snap your own neck firing it up! Movie: Overlord (Movie starts at 0:46) Beer: Cape May Brewing Co. Anniversary Ale 7.0
A beer named Sue and a new place to brew for Yazoo Yazoo Brewing Co. founder Linus Hall left the exciting world of tire engineering to found his brewery in 2003. Currently in their 2nd home, Yazoo is in the process of moving to a new, much larger location in Madison, TN. We sample a few of Yazoo's beers, including the new 15th Anniversary Ale brewed with Sabro hops, a new (a very tasty) variety. Hall shares some of the legal challenges Tennessee brewers have faced over the years and why he had to get a distillery license to brew his smoked beer, Sue. Brian digs in on the Nashville Hot Chicken scene and the "laws" that surround it and we discuss Yazoo's Embrace the Funk sour program. ALLO all! This week on Friends Drink Beer, we try ‘Mongo’ by Port Brewing based out of San Marcos, CA. This Double IPA affectionately named Mongo takes on the flavors of the four types of hops used to make it: Columbus, Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe. It carries a resinous aroma and also has citrus flavors that are finished with a piney bitterness. Today we drunk dial Andy Kong, a California based musician with over 100,000 listeners per MONTH on Spotify. We chat about his new single, “Harbor In A Hurricane,” and take a listen to the song to wrap up the episode. This week on FDB - we discuss a woman who wins a conch-blowing contest, dating someone who refuses to take off her swim goggles, and answer advice on traveling! In what seems to be a rising trend of Gastropub/Brewery hybridization, San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company claims to be the first on the southland’s scene in 1989, making lofty statements such as “...{we} became home to more breweries, many of whom got their start {here}”. Steve, Joey, and our guest Craig (@wottoartist) head to a the recently remodeled Costa Mesa location to sample new school experiments like Boat Shoes New England IPA, Fergs Red IPA, Padre Porter, and 29th Anniversary Ale; as well as some classics like Wreck Alley Imperial Stout, Red Trolley (and it’s Red Wine Barrel Aged variant), and Pintail Pale Ale. They savored some apps and entrees as well, and pondered whether Karl Strauss’ claims of shepherding in the highly influential world of San Diego microbrews hold water, or if they leave us thirsty for something a bit more satisfying.

That’s right it’s the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. So because we love the Star Wars Saga so much, and because Star Wars day was this past weekend (and no other reasons, definitely not anything schedule related or because we couldn’t see all the movies we had planned to see. Trust us), we decided to spend some time discussing one of our favorite movies (although as Anthony alleged this one is no one’s favorite Star Wars). And we talked about some stuff in the rest of the Star Wars universe as well because we wanted to. It’s our show we’ll do what we want and you’ll like it. This discussion was made possible by the most fitting beer companion: Newburgh Brewing 5th Anniversary Ale. It’s an Imperial Cream Ale, so between references to empires and anniversaries, this beer was a no brainer. Plus when have you known us to turn down a new offering from Newburgh? Please enjoy our celebration of these important dates in history, here on Flix & a Six, only on The Spinchoon!
In this first episode I sit down with Michael Marquess from Mother Road Brewing Co. Mother Road Brewing Co. has long been my favorite brewery in all the land so it’s only fitting to feature them in the very first episode. Mother Road Brewing Co. is located on the original Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Located in an old laundry building the brewery embodies the hardworking mentality of those traveling across the old Route 66 in search of the American Dream. When I arrived for the interview I was greeted by owner Michael Marquess and tap room host Cedar. I began with a pint of their 5th Anniversary Ale, an amazing strong Double IPA. Michael then took me on a tour of their brewing facility. I absolutely love local craft beer but know nothing about how it’s made. But now I do. Kind of. Not really. But it was cool to see how it all goes down. Lots of science and whatnot. Something I really love about Mother Road Brewing Co. is the local feeling. Being a little off the beaten path it’s not a place that people just happen to stumble upon. People come here with a purpose. Over the years that I have been going there I have always noticed a good blend of newcomers wanting to check out this highly rated brewery as well as a steady flow of locals but on this visit the local presence was more obvious to me. I got there right when they opened up and so did many of their loyal customers. Donning Mother Road Brewery Co. hats, t-shirts, and hoodies I thought that some of them were actually employees. Nope, just the local people who love the brewery and its beer who were there to get their Saturday growlers filled up before the place got jumping. That says a lot about the place. The next time you are in Flagstaff be sure to take a detour onto old Route 66 and check out what Mother Road Brewing Co. has to offer. Whether it’s the fantastic beer or the great staff you are sure to be pleased. In the meantime enjoy the show!
