With the sunshine we head to California and learn that brewing, like any other profession, can take us on a journey we might not have planned for. When Dylan Mobley (pictured far right) left his role at Stone Brewing in Escondido, California, to improve his work/life balance, he already had his next role mapped out. Instead, he'd spend the best part of the next five years helping create and refine some of the most revered and sought after beers in the modern US scene at Bottle Logic Brewing. But now, the California native is focused on his new venture at Rad Beer Co. Due to open this spring, Rad Beer Co is a a brewery and tasting room concept that will allow Mobley to brew a range of lagers and clean German Pilsners that complement the team's Rad Brat food offering. In this podcast, we speak to Mobley about his exciting plans for Rad Beer Co. We look back at his career to learn more about how he grew as a brewer during his four years at Bottle Logic Brewing. We discuss the level of quality control required when brewing and packaging the array of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stouts that remain so sought after across the globe, and also the on-going popularity of hop-forward hazy Pale Ales and IPAs.

Orctoberfest by Bottle Logic Brewing has malty sweetness with a hint of toast met by a soft, balanced bitterness. Bottle Logic Brewing started during brewmaster Steve Napolitano’s years at Chapman, where he practiced some elementary home brewing as a way to unwind between the stresses of studying law. Before long, this passion drew in some friends, who would later become his business partners and co-founders, and with their help, Napolitano’s hobby was elevated to the majestic brewery we have today. We would like to start out by saying that we hope wherever you are, you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe during these unprecedented times. We are continuing to do what we can to provide distraction and give you a beverage related safe haven to visit. Besides these stand alone podcasts, we are also live most Thursday nights around 630PM PST at twitch.tv/AboutBeverages. That is when we record our individual episodes, but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. We interact with our audience and discuss a wide variety of topics. No matter what direction it goes, it is always fun and informative. As for this episode, we once again turn to one of our favorite categories (beer) and styles (IPA). The beverage we will be trying is the Recursion IPA version 9.0 from Bottle Logic in Anaheim, California. We have not tried many offerings from this brewery, but what we have tried we have really liked. There have been other versions of this beer (one of which Keith had tried), but this one is the culmination of the Recursion experiment and was chosen as the best version of this west coast IPA series. Recursion is a cool word and if you aren’t familiar with its meaning, we recommend that you look it up. Perhaps right after popping open a cold can of the beer which uses the word in its name. Wait, did we need a spoiler alert there? What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
Episode Notes Episode 75: Bottle Logic Brewing’s Hanamachi Rice LagerIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at Hanamachi Rice Lager by Bottle Logic Brewing in Anaheim, CA. Will this one be naughty or rice? Let’s find out!Hanamachi pours pale and lagery—just as advertised—into my glass. It’s such a pale gold color there’s almost no color at all. Giving it a sniff, the rice is very apparent in the scent If you’ve ever had a whiff of a bottle of sake, you know exactly what I’m talking about here. It’s just a little cidery with some crisp green apple notes. Fresh and clean. But what about the taste? It’s almost completely like a traditional light lager in this department. There’s no bitterness to speak of and everything is clean and crisp. But there’s also that little bit of rice wine flavor as it appeared in the scent with its trademark just slightly sour notes. It’s just enough to color this beer as something different from your average pale lager and it definitely makes it a standout in the pale lager category as far as I’m concerned. It feels good and crisp in the mouth, without anything at all to weigh it down. This sentiment is furthered by its nice prickly carbonation that helps keep the whole thing lifted into a very light direction. This is a neat little spin on the pale lager. It’s got plenty of flavor and character from that rice and there’s a lot of cereal goodness in there from the other grains as well. Interestingly, I believe this beer would pair as well with a good hamburger as it does with sushi—and make no mistake I think this would be an amazing sushi beer! Hanamachi Rice Lager is 5% alcohol by volume and is available in cans as well as on tap at their Anaheim location. Get out and grab some and let me know what you think! That’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as we take a look at Pliny the Elder Double IPA by Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa, CA. Episode Notes Episode 74: Ordnance Brewing’s White Crow White StoutIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time again where we take on that massive craft brew aisle to find the hidden treasures waiting for us there. This week we’re taking a look at White Crow White Stout by Ordnance Brewing in Boardman, OR. What exactly is a White Stout, anyway? Let’s find out!First thing’s first. Although Ordnance Brewing’s operation is based in Boardman, they also have a taproom in Wilsonville, Oregon. I got to visit this taproom over the holidays and spent some time enjoying several of their beers. It was my intent to do a quickfire review as I usually do on my brewery visits, hitting all the beers that I tasted that day—and don’t get me wrong, I still intend to devote an episode to that. But when I tried their White Crow I knew that I was going to have to do a whole show featuring this beer. Pouring this beer into the glass I had no idea what was going on. It was listed on the wall as a stout but the color is a pale straw yellow. If you poured this and set it in front of me I’d swear I was looking at a pilsner. But then I smelled it. Absolutely amazing. Out of this pale yellow brew I got a ton of coffee and a little chocolate as well as just a hint of vanilla. There’s also a little bit of a cereal scent in the very back that rounds it out and reminds you that this is a brewing operation owned and operated by an Oregon farming dynasty. But what about the taste? White Crow is sweet around the edges with a good strong coffee bitterness. It’s full of roasted, toasted flavors that again I did not expect based on what I was looking at in my glass. You get both that little bit of chocolate and that little bit of vanilla that shows up in the scent. It also has a little touch of that unique stout sourness in the very back of the swallow which rounds the whole thing out and bring it home stout style. The feel of the beer in the mouth is very clean and pillowy soft but not at all chunky like you might expect from some stouts. It’s almost refreshing because of how clean it drinks. I went into this tasting expecting a gimmick beer—a stout that was pale instead of dark. But that’s selling White Crow extremely short. This is a lovingly-crafted stout with all the flavors I love and expect out of the style, but with a unique spin that adds to the fun of drinking it. White Crow is 5.8% alcohol by volume. Based on their website it appears that Ordnance currently distributes to Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho. I’ve reached out to them for more information and I’m waiting to hear back—I hope to have more details on how you can get your hands on this and the rest of their beers soon. But for those of you living within the distribution area—or who know people who can ship or smuggle you a bottle across state lines—this is an absolute must-try beer. We’re making it a Two Minute Beer Review Recommendation. The boys’ original review of Bottle Logic Brewing was such a hyper-specific themed affair, that they decided to head back to those mad scientists of the Anaheim beer scene, and give them a more thorough taste. Paring their selection down to basically IPA’s and Stouts, the style selection is limited, but, as you’ll hear, very varied in flavor. Steve & Joey guzzle down Cobra Attack WCIPA, Hammond’s Amber Ale, Jungle Hunt WCIPA, Upon Further Review Coffee WCIPA, Hyborian Age Hazy IPA, Pallet Treasure Imperial Chocolate Salted Nut Roll Stout, Sonic Rings Hazy IPA, Robots in Disguise Hazy DIPA, and Red Rover Imperial Red Ale. Now doubling down more on nerd culture over pulp science, does Bottle Logic earn the street cred with these two beer geeks...or end up just another poser trying to be an O.G.?

Season 3, Episode 45 – This week on the show, Temecula’s Beer Ambassador, aka John Ryti, joins us with some new stuff from Ironfire Brewing and Relentless Brewing, and we also try a little beer named Space Trace from Bottle Logic Brewing. This week, we are happy to welcome back our good friend and beer geek, John Ryti. He brought us some new beers from Relentless Brewing Company (first time on the show, by the way) and a hop-bomb from Ironfire Brewing Company that was tapped right off of the bright tank, so you know it’s fresh. Growler Tags from Relentless Brewing Company Temecula is quite the hot spot in the Inland Empire brewing scene, and if you have yet to visit and check out the breweries around the area, you’re totally missing out. Ironfire has been a mainstay for us locals over the past few years, while Relentless is the new kid on the block who’s already proving to be a must-visit brewery. Bottle Logic Brewing – Space Trace (photo: Jessica Rice McNew) We wrap up the show with Bottle Logic Brewing’s newest barrel-aged-beer-geek-bomb called Space Trace. This beer is their barrel-aged German Chocolate Cake Stout (which we also drink on the show this week) and DUDE, it is amazing. Much thanks to Matt Robertson at Bottle Logic for hitting us up and giving us a bottle. (It’s so fuggin’ good…) BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 3, Episode 27 – This week, beers from AleSmith Brewing Company and Bottle Logic Brewing. Happy Independence Day! This week, we’re keeping the blog post short and sweet. There are vegan hamburgers to be grilled and beers to be drank. This week, we’re drinking some pretty hefty beers from Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic. Before we get too deep into it, we’re gonna start with a trip inside the 4B Mailbag with some Founders Backwoods Bastard. Speaking of which, we’re asking for your beer haikus. Feeling creative? Send us yours at feedback@fourbrewers.com. Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic Brewing Next up are three beers that really showcase what’s going on in the SoCal beer scene. AleSmith Brewing Company’s Private Stock Ale and Mexican Speedway Stout are first up. Private Stock Ale is an Old Ale that was made for aging. AleSmith even encourages you to do this. Why? Because, man, IS IT HOT! So much booze on this beer, it’s crazy! But, that’s by design. AleSmith knows what they’re doing and when they tell you to age this beer, you should. Buy a few bottles and open them over the course of five or six years. The booziness should mellow out over time, allowing the beer to really shine. Drink a bottle fresh as a baseline for comparison and then another in a year or two. Hell, buy a case and really geek out with cellaring… AleSmith makes killer stout—probably the best in the world, according to certain folks. Speedway Stout is a classic coffee stout that lends itself well to barrel aging. This version, Mexican Speedway Stout, is a blend of fresh Speedway Stout and tequila barrel-aged Speedway Stout with cinnamon, Mexican coffee and Mexican Chocolate. The balanced of these particular ingredients in beer is critical, and AleSmith nails it—this beer is fantastic. Bottle Logic Brewing – Fundamental Observation We end the show with a beer that needs no introduction, Bottle Logic Brewing’s Fundamental Observation. This beer is the whale-iest of SoCal whales. It’s a fantastic blend of barrel aged stout that literally smells like alcohol infused brownies. While drinking this beer, we talk about beer geeks and beer culture in general and how the scene has changed over that last five years or so. Spoiler: John goes on a rant… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 3, Episode 10 – We’re back with part 2 of our visit to Bottle Logic Brewing in Anaheim, California, and this week, we’re saddling up some unicorns. Get your Four Brewers “Metal Logo” shirt!Available for a limited time: fourbrewers.com/metal Before we get into the beers, it should be known that Greg’s cask ale festival called “Firkfest” is going down on March 19, 2016 in Anaheim, California. We’ve been promoting this event for good reason—it’s a unique festival to Southern California, featuring 30 breweries and 50 cask beers, ranginga from the more traditional cask conditioned beers to firkins with chocolate, peppers, or whatever else brewers want to add to their standard release and one-off beers. Get your tickets at firkfest.com. Barrels at Bottle Logic Brewing We kick off the show right where we left off with part 1, drinking some German Chocolate Cake. The beer lives up to its namesake, and we find out that this beer is also what runs through Nagel’s veins (he’s German…bad joke). This beer is served on both nitro and CO2 at Bottle Logic’s tasting room, which is a common practice of Bottle Logic. Good idea for those who don’t enjoy nitrogen infused brew. While we’re drinking this beer, we discuss the unique technique that Bottle Logic employs to add ingredients like cacao nibs, vanilla, and even wood to their beers while they’re still in the fermentor. Moar Barrels! Next up is a beer that has yet to be released, Bottle Logic’s brettanomyces brew, Some Assembly Required. The bottle we had on the show was midway through its bottle conditioning and a bit warm, so it was a bit explosive. This didn’t stop us from thoroughly enjoying the beer. Definitely a unicorn worth capturing when Bottle Logic releases it. Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, a barrel sample of the renowned Bottle Logic barrel-aged stout, Fundamental Observation. This beer rocks! This was only a barrel sample we had on the show—it was flat and room temperature—and it was already amazing. F.O. is no hype-whale, it’s the real deal, from what we could taste, and this was only a single barrel sample. While enjoying this beer, we talk about how Bottle Logic designs a beer that is destined to be barrel-aged. It’s not as simple as making a stellar stout and throwing in a barrel. Big, BIG thanks to Wes and Brandon for having us at Bottle Logic. They’re off to a great start for a two year-old brewery, and we couldn’t be more proud to have them brewing their beer in Southern California. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Beers From Bottle Logic Brewing Shooting each other in the junk with laser beams sounded like fun at the time, but drinking Bottle Logic Brewing beers in their barrel room seemed like a better idea. Speaking of shooting each other in the junk with lasers, it turns out that She Shot First with galaxy, citra and centennial in our gaping, carbonite mouths. Although hoppy wheats may be known for their modern unfortunate landmass times, this beer was birthed on the homestove of Bottle Logic Master Brewer Wes Parker. “Juicy,” says Four Brewers’ Jason Harris, otherwise known as Internet’s Golden Brett, in a nasally, high-pitched voice. Zerø Day juices our mouths with Vermont-style IPA cloud beer. Juice profiles are dialed in, maximum hoppage is achieved, targets are hit, and montages are played with sweaty Bottle Logic brewers listening to “I Need a Hero.” The beer looks like a yellow pair of Juicy Couture sweat pants got dipped in freshly dry hopped beer and wrung out into pint glasses. But, oh if it ain’t juicy and supremely delicious. Wes Parker, Brewmaster at Bottle Logic Berliner Equation w/ Blueberries is next. It’s kettle soured and bursting with fruit. 350 pounds of berries tie our tongues into a quadratic equation, nearly turning us into Violet Beauregarde. Thankfully, we got rolled to the juicing room for squeezing, doopity doo. Expansion for sour beer? Yes! Bottle Logic is creating a sour/brett beer facility. Oh, and spoiler alert. Recursion 8.0 is next. This IPA is surprising software, with 2.5 hexadecimal pounds of dry hop per gigabarrel. Dank.exe is compiled with no bugs. Pee.bat is called. We wrap up part 1 of the Bottle Logic visit with medal-winning Cobaltic Porter. Details are then leaked about their anniversary Week of Logic: Hint: it’s space themed.
