Duke Basketball Corner UVA/State Reaction + The Most Dangerous 13-17 Team Ever? 2019-20, Ep. 26 24-6 (14-5) I run down Duke's impressive responses to adversity this season, express my lineup abandonment issues against Virginia, and finish up with a bemusement/amusement combo regarding the general response to Duke's zone success vs NC State. Plus there's ACC Tourney seeding scenarios, because nothing gets me amped more than seeding scenarios. Also, I'M CALMER THAN YOU ARE ABOUT FACING A 13-17 TEAM WHICH POSES NO THREAT AT ALL TO DUKE NOPE NONE WHATSOEVER. -68:48- fin ***** Questions/Comments/Paid Inquiries: dukebasketballcorner@gmail.com Co-Host Inquiry (email dukebasketballcorner@gmail.com with *serious* interest) ***** Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner WF Reaction: Glass Half Full, Glass Half Empty, Or a Glass Case of Emotion? 2019-20, Ep. 25 23-5 (13-4) The blown lead sucked, but my concerns about Duke's loss to Wake Forest go well beyond a late-game collapse. -95:23- fin *I made a point about Duke's struggle against the Wake zone, and want to be clear that point was related to the first half (scored on just 5 of 23 zone possessions ) and not the second half (scored on 7 of 13 possessions before Wake stopped zoning) or overtimes (no zone). Overall, in the halfcourt, WF played zone on 23 of 35 possessions in the first half, 13 of 34 second half possessions, and 0 of 7 overtime possessions. I want to make that clear in case it sounds like my point comes across as Duke struggling against the WF zone for all 50 minutes. ***** Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner Wofford/General Non-Conf Reaction + Reunited and it Feels So Good (With Ray Holloman) 2019-20, Ep. 11 10-1 (1-0) A bit of background on on the structure of this epside: Ray Holloman is my guest on the ep, but I don't even like calling him that considering he was for a while as close as I've ever come to having a permanent co-host. Long story short, his job and family life just didn't give him the abililty to consistently record, and when we were able to arrange time, it usuall occured late at night, like really late, and ended up wrecking havoc on our sleep schedule after each, more so him than me since I don't need much sleep in general. While scheduling could be and mostly was an issue during the DBC Ray era, the ep you're about to hear reminded me of of exactly what is so great about recording with him and what's also frustrating for me, because the thing is, Ray and I love to talk Duke, like looooove to talk Duke, and we love all the details and stories and context of it. I've never been a natural play-by-play guy, always more of a color commentator, so while I've become used to playing both roles at the same time over the years, I was always tested more handling the play-by-play aspects with Ray, because I find every story he tells about something Duke-related to be worthy quality and great entertainment. The issue is the length, which coming from me is funny. Often our recording sessions would be marathons, and we'd just keep chatting after it was officially over. Often I'd have to edit out 75% of each ep's material, because I'm not going to post a four hour episode each week, whether it's split up or not. So overall, I always found it tough to cut him off and eliminate topics and do whatever I could to trim time, because if I didn't, we'd just keep going. If it sound like I'm blaming him consider the fact that I equaled out to 50% of the people recording, and I controlled the topics, so I'm not blaming anyone, and am holding myself accountable. So to sum it all up, since I cover everything current as far as news, notes, analysis, and projects each week, I just wanted him on to chat about Duke, and hopefully others would find our conversation interesting. I wanted the topics based around current Duke (and hopefully a 2010s decade ep we'll record next weekend) but more free-flowing. Basically I dind't want to get in the way. So what happens? We record for 45 minutes veering off into all sorts of territory before actually being able to focus on the first current topic, which is Wofford haha. While Ray and I do discuss key topics such as Joey Baker's role as well as the major team factor I promised last ep, I'd actually say the first 45 minutes or so is peak Ray and I, which I couldn't love any more. I'm hoping others enjoy that as well, because I recognize it's a big change of pace as far as the format. It was originally intended to give an overview of nonconference and talk about moving foward, It's not worth listing all every minor detail I had to leave out because of time, but do want to give a shoutout to my favorite overall type of shot so far this season, a shot which has existed in as pure a form as now since the day he arrived at Duke, he sunk one in Canada summer of 2018. and that's Joey Baker's shot face, one dribble, rise and fire. I need to specify, I think I mentioned Baker had played in 18 lineups from Georgia State through Wofford. I was actually talking about his 18 most played. Overall he's been in 42 different lineups and 35 filtering out garbage time, much more than 18. I was strictly referring to Duke’s 18 *most played* lineups during the time period involving Joey Baker. I stated last ep Jack White would be my choice for most underrated Duke player, then proceeded to barely talk about him, and don’t even think I mentioned him for more than a sentence on this episode. Perhaps he wouldn’t be as underrated and/or under the radar if folks like me consistently would give him more shine. Shame on me. Last thing, which I actually talked about in-depth with Ray before than I somehow blanked while recorded, I've mentioned Tre's completely re-worked form and release constantly. It's nuts to imagine how much work he put in over the summer to re-work it to such an extent. I'm done telling people what I'm going to write or hoping to write. It's been a struggle to find time and motivation, but it’s worth stating that the Tre feature is the one article I mentioned over and over, plus even offered to send anyone who requested via emial a video I’d completed showing his made non-layups during the season. It really does blow my mind that the centerpiece player of Duke completely re-worked his form and release and it’s not only not being showcased and highlighted, it’s [from what I’ve seen and heard] not even being acknowledged. Duke deserves the highest quality coverage imo, and it’s a shame the type of coverage which ends up occurring instead is focused on lazy clichés, narratives, and generalities. Feel free to email me if you’re the type who enjoys reading, because it doesn’t take much motivation to get me going if I feel like there’s a demand for it. Okay, I've rambled long enough. Hopefully everyone enjoys the holiday season doing or not doing whatever makes you happy. Hopefully you'll also get another ep in a week with Ray and I giving thoughts on the 2010s decade. If there's anything you'd like included, email Duke basketball corner. Co-host inquiries, email duke basketball corner at gmail. Keep in mind I put in the time to make this pod the best option anywhere for Duke analysis, and that includes every platform both paid and unpaid. All I've ever asked for is a bit of promo. Writing a review takes 30 seconds at most. RTing a pod post on twitter or writing your own tweet promoting the pod takes 30 seconds at most. Thanks, and enjoy the episode. Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner GSU & 2KC Reaction + Projecting Duke's Go-To Lineup 2019-20, Ep. 8 6-0 Topics Include: Georgetown Overview Virginia is going next-level Virginia Zone (GSU & Cal) Coach K Facts Georgetown Breakdown Standout Strengths Rotation Weekend at Vernies Second Half Stan Hey Coach K, Please Help Tre Helping Tre Helps the Team PROJECTING DUKE'S GO-TO LINEUP More insight into two of my choices Standout Issues Closing Topics (Luka Appreciation + Scouting Rant + Joe & I complain about our crappy NBA teams + UNC's tough upcoming schedule) *Clarification: When I mentioned Tre's first PnR around 3:15, I should have made clear it was the first PnR in single coverage. As a whole, he did recieve solid (not optimal, but solid) PnR opportunities, and no matter how they occured, Duke thrived. Before going scoreless on two possessions with under three minutes left, the Blue Devils (directly or indirectly) scored 24 points on 14 possessions in which Tre received PnR at any point, an absurd 1.71 points per possession. Stats can at times be misleading without context, such as Jones getting credit for PnR at 6:25 of the 1st half (while true that Tre did pass out to Vernon, it's much more Carey simply iso-ing from above the break and driving in for a goaltended basket) but eitheir way, the bigger question is why Tre isn't getting even more PnR considering the difference in Duke's overall offensive efficiency with and without it occuring. Duke Basketball Corner Blue Collar Blue Devils? Reacting to Duke's Season-Opening Win Over Kansas 2019-20, Ep. 6 1-0 Duke's big Champion's Classic win over Kansas was eerily similar to the Blue Devils' previous trip to Madison Square Garden, which means plenty of turnovers and an alpha glue guy performance by Jack White! There's lots to talk about, and contrary to what widespread college basketball coverage leads you to believe, it's possible to do so without cliches and hot takes! *For those personally offended by non-aesthetically pleasing Duke victories, feel free to check out my very heartfelt, very serious letter to Quinn Cook I wrote back in the summer of 2012, and consider it dedicated to you.
Duke Basketball Corner Kansas + UNC Beat Reporter Intel (With CJ Moore & Brant Wilkerson-New) 2019-20, Ep. 5 I very rarely do any sort of game or opponent previews, but considering seasoning-openers are more roster breakdowns rather than actual previews unless both teams are experienced, I hit up CJ Moore to chat about the upcoming Duke-Kansas Champion's Classic matchup, followed by Brant Wilkerson-New for UNC talk (because if there’s one team I figure Duke fans are interested in no matter what, it's UNC despite the fact their first matchup of the year isn’t for three months). Before the game discussion, I chat with CJ for 20 minutes on various topics such as Duke's 2018 elite 8 loss game that still makes me angrier than any Duke game in my lifetime, as well as Snoop Dogg’s Night at the Fog and why Kansas, similar to Duke, doesn’t play secret scrimmages. If you want to go straight to the current team and game-related topics, skip ahead 20 minutes from the start of the conversation, though I think it’s all very worth it and consider him one of the best beat reporters in the biz. With Brant, we get straight into the nitty gritty of what the current team looked like in its final scrimmage against Winston Salem State, a roster breakdown, and expectations headed into this season led by Cole Anthony. Spoiler, Roy’s already pretty dadgum angry at the Heels. Duke Basketball Corner 2019-20 ACC Preview + Pre-CTC Thoughts (2019-20, Ep. 1) With CTC (Countdown to Craziness) about to introduce the new Duke team followed by nonstop episodes focusing on the Blue Devils. it seems right to use the first episode of the season to learn about many of their upcoming opponents. Duke Basketball Corner Duke All-Decade Teams Under K (80s-90s-00s-10s-Overall) (With Joe Gaudio) 2019 Offseason, Ep. 3 When a coach has excelled throughout 40 years at the same school, creating all-decade teams becomes quite the task. Joe Gaudio and I grind out our individual choices for the 1980s, 90s, 00s, and 2010s, plus an all-time team under K. For each decade we give a 1st and 2nd team, or if easier it could be thought of as a 10-man rotation with 5 starters and 5 bench players (though if we're being honest, we all know K would never go 10-deep). For those whose career crossed over into a different decade, we go with the decade when they played more seasons, and if split evenly, we chose the decade in which the player had more success. Some of our choices coincided, some choices differed. More than anything, we gained insight into the way we view the impact of the players on some of our favorite teams, thus leading to choices that some may find surprising. After the all-decade and all-K teams, the episode finish up with each of us giving a list of our top 10 favorite Dukies (which for me is a long overdue update to an episode from 2015). We also include an all-one-and-done team. I may eventually post our choices on twitter and update this written podcast description, but I feel like it'd be more fun for a listener to not know what's coming as well as to listen to our descriptions, because as always, the how and why is just as if not more interesting to me than the what. Duke Basketball Corner (2019 Offseason, Ep. 1) Shades of Grayson Despite typically rooting for all players in general, I've always done my best to evaluate individuals on the pod based on actual basketball analysis, meaning Grayson Allen's "extracuricular activities" have been avoided other than my expert opinions such as "stop doing that!" after each. Unfortunately his most recent incident with Grant Williams in Summer League (yes, SUMMER LEAGUE) finally convinced me to discuss his timeline of "events," though in as rational a way as possible i.e. polar opposite of damn near every other Grayson conversation out there. If you're listening for confirmation bias, don't bother. If you want hot takes with an us vs. them (duke/non-duke) mentality, don't bother. Viewing Grayson through a prism of extremes, despite the popularity of doing so, doesn't interest me. His behavior has definitely framed him as extremely polarizing (to his own admission) but he's still a human being, and people are complex. I'm not judging, defending, or suggesting some sort of definitive solution, and in discussing the topic, there's no goal to be right or wrong. Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner The Annual Duke Basketball Tree Pod: 2019 Edition (With Joe Gaudio) (2018-19, Ep. 29) The deep dive of all deep dives! It's tiiiiiiiime to check in with all the ex-Dukies in basketball roles. Spoiler, it's a long list. Whether it be current players, coaches, and front office personnel in the NBA or college coaches, the sheer amount of highly successful ex-Duke players (and Mike Brey) does a great job of representing how impressive the program really is. For this monumental task, I brought on Joe Gaudio to help out, a huge Duke fan based in New York who you may very well hear from again on future pods. **The audio issues from Joe's audio end are unfortunate and no fault of his. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to fix them post-recording, though I did improve the quality as best I could through editing. I apologize, will do everything possible to prevent that from happening in the future, and appreciate everyone's understanding. 0:00 Pre-Intro: Episode Overview + overlooked and extended branches of the tree (Marques Bolden, Contracts, Ingram health, JJ fun fact, DT defense, co-host) 5:34 ***Quick Audio Explanation*** 5:54 Intro + Joe’s Duke Fanhood 12:15 A crazy start to free agency 13:35 General thoughts about the Nets (Kyrie and Durant heading to New York but not the Knicks) 21:00 Achilles tears/ruptures 25:20 The New Orleans Pelicans aka The Peldevils aka The Devilcans aka Duke South aka Duke West aka Duke Southwest aka Blue Orleans (Zion, JJ, Ingram, Jah, Frank, Trajan) 31:45 RJ Barrett 34:35 Cam Reddish 36:35 Austin Rivers 37:45 Rodney Hood 39:50 Gary Trent 41:40 Trevon Duval 43:15 Amile Jefferson 45:50 Jabari Parker 47:20 Quinn Cook 49:15 Luol Deng (Real estate mogul!) 53:25 Marvin Bagley 55:50 Harry Giles 58:05 Wendell Carter 62:25 Grayson Allen 69:30 Jayson Tatum 75:45 Justise Winslow 80:45 Mason and Miles Plumlee 82:55 Honorary Dukies (Shaun Livingston and Semi Ojeleye) NBA Coaches, NBA Front Office, College Media 82:35 Quin Snyder, Dahntay Jones, Jay (it’s Jason!!) Duke Basketball Corner NBA Post-Draft Rundown (With David Gardner) (2018-19, Ep. 28) *Originally posted Wednesday, June 26th but there were issues with the pod not showing up on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and blah blah blah no one wants to hear about my drama but just wanted to make clear that it was completed and intended to be accessible sooner. I thought it would be fun to record an episode with a focus on conversational topics, so I brought on David Gardner (Bleacher Report) to chat about some interesting NBA storylines. We mostly focus on the draft, but also discuss other NBA takeaways from the Finals, the way the NBA is covered, upcoming free agency, and more. Enjoy Follow David on twitter. The podcast will now officially be under the title/channel of Duke Basketball Corner rather than Comarow's Corner. It makes sense in general and will definitely make it easier to find. The podcast homepage is now dukebasketballcorner.podbean.com I've changed the feed on the podbean site, so hopefully apple podcasts pick it up and transfer subscribers. If not, I'll do it manually on the Apple Podcasts site. Fingers crossed it also updates successfully on Spotify. Everything is good to go on Podbean, so uploading this recording is more a test for Apple Podcasts/iTunes and Spotify.
Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 27) Duke Draft Prospect Scouting Reports (With Mike Gribanov) I love projecting draft prospects and am always looking for a excuse to nerd out on them. Well, there's no better reason than now to do so with the NBA draft next week! I'm joined by one of the best draft prospect evaluators out there, Mike Gribanov from the Stepien, and he's kind enough to let me take the lead on the Duke portion of our conversation before I differed to him on the non-Duke prospects (that portion of our convo will be released separately from this episode). Enjoy! Follow Mike on twitter and subscribe to The Stepien Draft Podcast. 0-5:30 Intro + context of applying Duke's 2018-19 offensive system to the prospects. 5:30-32:00 Zion Williamson 32:00-48:30 RJ Barrett 48:30-54:00 Zion 54:00-57:10 RJ 57:10-74:50 Cam Reddish 74:50-78:30 Marques Bolden 78:30-80:49 Where to find more of Mike's work + Outro Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 26) A Deep Dive to Wrap Up 2018-19 (With Brant Wilkerson-New) (32-6) I've done an ACC season in review episode, and for Duke I've done an MSU/NCAA Tournament overview as well as a chronological Duke season in review, so now let's tie a bow on the 2018-19 Blue Devils with a deep dive of the program. Thanks so much to News and Record Triangle Beat Reporter Brant Wilkerson-New, who again is kind enough to tolerate my *always entertaining* Duke rants. Those with a serious interest in potentially co-hosting the pod next season should definitely listen to the intro and email dukebasketballcorner @ gmail ASAP! Follow Brant on twitter! Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 25) A Chronological 2018-19 Duke Season in Review (With Brant Wilkerson-New) (32-6) I've done an ACC season in review episode, I've done an MSU overview episode (though limiting it to simply MSU seems kinda ridiculous tbh but MOVING ON) so now it's time look back at Duke's season in a shockingly organized way going all the way back to August 2018 in Canada. I'm joined by News and Record Triangle Beat Reporter Brant Wilkerson-New to help me remember our feels throughout the different portions of Duke's schedule and recall our thoughts/opinions/analysis at the time. This was fun! Those with a serious interest in potentially co-hosting the pod next season should definitely listen to the intro and email dukebasketballcorner @ gmail by May 15th. Next up will be a Duke season/program deep dive, so keep a lookout for that plus please give an honest listen to the intro, (it's not the same recording each time) and review on iTunes to help promte the pod if you'd like it to continue. Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 24) Freeform Thoughts: Was MSU an Outlier or a Valid Representation of Duke's Season? (32-6) With the hot takes in the rearview and most already having moved on to next season, it feels like a good time to give my own thoughts on MSU for this episode, with a 2018-19 season deep dive soon to come. I discuss everything that happened in the MSU loss. What if anything was understandable?W hat's some good historical context? Should we have seen this coming? What was the most frustrating aspect about the game? Should we blame RJ Barrett? (HELL NO). Was the strategy solid and the execution the problem? The reverse? Not enough experience? Should Coach K be fired and replaced immediately by Mike Buckmire? All this and much more is discussed, though maybe not the last part about Buckmire... should it have been?
Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 23) ACC Team-By-Team Season Thoughts (With Lauren Brownlow) Exactly what the title of the pod suggests, it's time to give season-ending thoughts on all the ACC teams. I'm joined by ACC beat reporter Lauren Brownlow to help give insight, with extra focus given to the national champion 2018-19 Virginia Cavaliers as well as the three triangle teams. Enjoy! 0-11:50 -Cold Open -Intro -Should the NCAA Tournament be used as a referendum on the season? 11:55-26:00 Virginia 26:00-35:40 Duke 35:40-43:45 North Carolina 43:45-44:55 *forgot to mention Tre staying at Duke 44:55-54:40 NC State 54:40-58:50 Virginia Tech 58:50-62:20 Florida State 62:20-65:55 Louisville 65:55-69:40 Syracuse 69:40-72:00 Wake Forest 72:00-75:30 Clemson 75:30-78:15 Georgia Tech 78:15-80:00 Miami 80:00-83:00 Boston College 83:00-85:30 Notre Dame 85:30-87:30 Pittsburgh 87:30-92:45 -Last thoughts on the 2018-19 ACC season + how next season looks from a general standpoint. -Random NCAA Tournament Quiz Question! -Outro Thanks for listening! Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 22) Va Tech Sweet 16 Reaction + MSU Elite 8 Preview (32-5) Duke's halfway through the bracket, and while there's worrisome trends worth pointing out, the bottom line = survive and advance. A bit overly stat-reliant since I hadn't seen much Michigan State this season, but did as much cramming as possible on the Spartans to at least get something out there for you guys resembling quality. Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 18) Bracket Talk: Will Duke Feast on the East? (With Jordan Livingston) (29-5) Let's Dance! It's officially NCAA Tourney time, and I'm joined by Duke fan Jordan Livingston to discuss Duke's East Region as well as other tourney storylines, plus interesting teams/matchups/players worth keeping an eye on. Also, we make predictions for the final four, title game, and pick a champion, because we're both *EXPERTS.* Since nothing proves whether someone's an *EXPERT* like filling out an NCAA Tournament bracket, please judge us both by our *EXPERT* picks and nothing but our *EXPERT* picks for the rest of our lives. Thx!
Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 17.5) ACC Tourney Champs! (With Jordan Livingston) (29-5) Duke takes out Florida State to win the ACC Title, and while there will be plenty of NCAA Tournament talk, it would be blasphemy to gloss over a huge achievement by the Blue Devils, thus necessitating a short but sweet add-on to the previous ACC Tourney episode. Duke fan Jordan Livingston joined me for the upcoming bracket episode, and he was kind enough to also contribute here for a quick recap of the tourney championship. Follow him on Twitter! Duke Basketball Corner (2018-19, Ep. 14) Deep Diving with Jordan Sperber) (23-3, 11-2) *Zion blew through his shoe (New Nike Slogan: Just Blew It) 36 seconds into the Duke-Carolina game, and it was mostly rough times from there. With so much being unknown right now as to Zion's health, I thought it would be fun to make a more lasting episode, taking a deep dive into Jordan Sperber's analytics and x's and o's mind. He's carved out his own path in college basketball coverage, a path I'm hopeful others will soon join him on. *I talk to Jordan about his career, the analytics movement (along with all types of CBB analysis) Game Prep, Duke's offense, and issues with college basketball coverage. *It's a marathon, and I'm very appreciative of how much time Jordan gave on my pod.
