Guest: Toronto Star Queen's Park Bureau Chief Robert Benzie On the one hand, Doug Ford won a third straight majority (the first such feat by a premier in Ontario since the 1950s). On the other hand, he doesn't seem happy about it, because he wanted more seats. The Star's Robert Benzie explains why, and looks at the similar dark cloud/silver lining result faced by other parties (and shares former premier David Peterson's observation about why winning too big is as much a curse as a blessing). He also breaks down the results, and the turnout (NOT the worst participation rate ever, FWIW), and discusses the prospects for long-simmering issues such as health care to come to the surface now that the election is over. PLUS: Why you could consider this a “Seinfeld” election This episode was produced by Julia De Laurentiis Johnston, Ed Keenan and Paulo Marques.
I'm not sure about you, but I did not get a lot of training in self-management when I was a graduate student (but cut me some slack... I was in an EAB program!). If you're in the same boat as I am, then you're in luck. In Session 288, I'm joined by Katie Croce and Jamie Salter, and in our conversation, they provided their unique strategies for fostering self-management using the Self and Match system. We get in to how they developed their unique approach to self-management, how they've refined it over time, the relationship between self-monitoring and accountability, research supporting these practices, and lots more. If you want to learn more about this approach to supporting individuals to become more independent, sign up for their mailing list, or consider picking up a copy of the Self and Match manual. Today I'm delighted to welcome back one of The Shift's very first guests, journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon. Bryony has been a columnist on the Telegraph for over 20 years and for ten of those she has been writing candidly about her own experiences of addiction and mental illness. She is the best selling author of Mad Girl and The Wrong Knickers and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates a global peer support network that encourages people with mental health issues to connect, for which she has won several awards. She also, FWIW, ran the London marathon in her knickers. Three years after her first visit to The Shift, Bryony is back - older, wiser (yes really) - and with a new book, the pertinently titled, Mad Woman, which discusses her struggles with burnout, binge eating and, yep, you guessed it, fluctuating hormones. Bryony joined me from bed in south London to talk about maintaining a public facade when you're privately falling apart, finally learning to feed herself properly at 43, discovering all the women in her family went into menopause in their early 40s, why she's done with feeling like she's the problem and how Davina McCall saved her life! If you'd like to sponsor Bryony's Big Challenge, you can find out more here. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Mad Woman by Bryony Gordon and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Featured Musician: Magic Toaster THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things said.] --------------------- 1. Bryce Underwood and Recruiting starts at the top High-five everybody! Is he the starter next year? What does it do for the class? Guessing this means Michigan gets Derek Meadows, who was a package deal, and keeps Olesh, and can finish strong. What to make of other flip possibilities, including an OT committed to Alabama? What happened to Jaylen Williams? 2 & 3. Northwestern Preview starts at 24:19 (offense) and 35:38 (defense) Offense isn't SO bad but still quite bad. Offensive line issues are not just injuries. Mirror Michigan in that they have similar weaknesses and an OC who doesn't really know what he's doing or how to evaluate what he has. Defensively well-coached guys but few dudes. One dude they do have is a cornerback who's playing hurt. 4. Basketball vs Tarleton State and Ft Myers Preview starts at 46:57 A glitchy shooting night and a lot of fouling in a low-care blowout, but we only care about the turnover rate. Well not ONLY: Vlad Goldin needs to stop and gather when he gets the ball low in transition. Defensively the starters are so much better than other lineups. Seeing good play from Pippen—has he earned a role? Fort Myers: Virginia Tech is Not Good but also important to beat because South Carolina and Xavier would both be very good resume games we'd like to get to. Xavier is on par with Michigan; South Carolina looks like Wake and TCU. About the Featured Artist: Magic Toaster As far as I can tell we're getting in on the ground floor of this local dude—and I have to know is that a sample from Chrono Trigger at the beginning of Blue Night Oberon, which is his latest single? Magic Taster calls his music "igneous rock recorded in my basement" but it's got deep prog and rock roots. The lyrics are accessible, smart, and funny. He came up on a playlist of Indie Ann Arbor music and I wrote the last couple of articles with him on in the background. I don't know any more about him but I'm featuring and finding out and giving you a selection of three different songs that show off his range. FWIW the third one—Saturday Nite—is the one that caught my ears. Song choices: Blue Night Oberon Anything's Fine Saturday Nite Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThis week, Matt and Brian take stock of Matt Gaetz, Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard—Trump's Fanatic Four nominees to head the Departments of Justice, Defense, Health and Human Services, and the national intelligence directorate. They discuss:* Why Hegseth's personal mediocrity (C-list Fox News host) and depraved sexual conduct (pretty awful), combined with the complexity of running an organization as vast as DOD, might make him the worst of the four picks. * But also why they're all really bad and it's hard to say who's the worst!* How career civil servants should respond (or not) when confronted with corrupt or abusive orders. Then, behind the paywall, a longer discussion of why Trump has picked scandal-plagued individuals for these roles, and how Democrats in Congress can and should exploit their liabilities. Why are prominent Democrats like Cory Booker, Chris Coons, and Jared Polis setting the tone by kissing up to RFK Jr? Does Hakeem Jeffries really believe that Trump's potential cabinet officials are distractions, not worth commenting on? Is the best we can “hope” for that these people shamble their way into crises that leave the administration discredited? All that, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. The year is 2025. Department of Government Efficiency dons Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have broken ground on their new taxpayer-funded palace, the architectural plans of which look suspiciously like a Cybertruck. HHS Secretary RFK Jr. has received a standing ovation from Congress after announcing that children will be given brain worms at birth instead of vaccines. Attorney General Matt Gaetz has just announced that people who successfully stand their ground will be mailed a sticker from DOJ. How did we get here? To help us break down the results of last week's elections, and to offer a sounding board to Sam and David's hot takes, joining the pod is New Yorker staff writer and political reporter Benjamin Wallace-Wells. We start off by discussing swing voters, the failures of the Democrats and the Harris campaign, and what the election results hint about the future of the Republican party. (FWIW, we recorded before the Hegseth/Gabbard/Gaetz nominations.) We work through how the election was shaped by local concerns including perceptions of crime and disorder all the way to big international topics like the Russia-Ukraine war. Putting their heads together, Sam, David, and Wallace-Wells come up with a grand unified theory of local, national, and cultural politics in America today. Listen to find out everything you need to know about the election—and let us know if we got it right. This podcast is generously supported by Themis Bar Review. What's Your Baseline? Enterprise Architecture & Business Process Management Demystified
I know that this might be a cultural issue, but I don't see a lot of planning when it comes to projects anymore. Everything is "Agile" and I don't see that things are seen through that often.Which is bad, because one of the promises of EA (and BPM) is that someone understands how things are wired up and what to change, so that you accomplish your objective - which should always be business-driven FWIW.From my perspective this is a step back in the maturity of the discipline of Enterprise Architecture. And given the fact that the maturity was never high to start with, this is not a good development. To help a bit in this situation J-M and I talk about EA use cases to give you some direction what you can do when you decide that this is a capability that you want to implement in your organization. In this episode of the What's Your Baseline Podcast we talk about: Short (-ish) review of Episode 70 "BPM Use Cases" Recap of Episode 70 to set the context App/IT portfolio mgmt / rationalization Roadmapping Project portfolio mgmt / rationalization (looking at capabilities) Mergers & Acquisitions Operational resilience and disaster recovery Strategy Roles of architects Please reach out to us by either sending an email to hello@whatsyourbaseline.com or leaving us a voice message by clicking here. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whatsyourbaseline/support

A new poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris with a three-point lead over former President Donald Trump. Ravi kicks off the show by delving into the latest data and what it reveals about shifting dynamics in key battleground states. He also examines how independent Dan Osborne could shake up the Nebraska Senate race, whether Elon Musk's appearance at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania this weekend will boost Trump's standing, and how Harris's decision to engage with alternative media like the ‘Call Her Daddy' podcast has resonated with voters. Next, Ravi is joined by Kyle Tharp from FWIW, a weekly newsletter that breaks down the digital strategies shaping elections. They explore how social media, digital ads, and online fundraising have transformed the presidential race and the ways the campaigns have strategically leveraged platforms like TikTok and Facebook. They also explore the rise of online misinformation online and how it could influence the election. After a long break the world's most famous, in-demand podcast is back. The dozens of listeners left stranded came unmoored as they desperately attempted to find a replacement podcast only to realize there was nothing that came close to FWIW. Most alternative podcasts are run by those who leave the "About" tab empty. People who are compromised in one way or another, and would like you to know as little about them as possible. Adding or speaking about who they are might impact their analytics which serve as their primary guiding light. But this podcast host talks about what other hosts only talk about in private because he doesn't care about numbers, data, metrics, or analytics. He cares only about camera gear and film types.

Back in October of 2023, The US Supreme Court heard a case involving an electoral map that has been proven in a court of law to be racist. That was in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. Since the nation's highest court failed to deliver an expedited ruling in, South Carolinians are going into the 2024 election with this racially gerrymandered map. The consequences of a ruling in this case could not only change the course of the 2024 election, but it could undermine democracy itself. Listen as we explore a decades long effort to chip away at the 14th amendment and the Voting Rights Act in an effort to strip minority communities of their political power. The US Supreme Court will soon be deciding if violent domestic abusers can legally own and possess guns. Unfortunately, you read that right… The defendant in the case United States v. Rahimi is clearly a violent individual. In 2020, a judge issued a restraining order against him on behalf of his ex-girlfriend after he threw her onto the pavement of a parking lot, dragged her into his car, and then shot at a bystander he noticed nearby. The restraining order barred him from possessing firearms. Still, he carried out five different shootings around Arlington, Texas. After all that, cops searched his home, found guns and ammo that he wasn't supposed to have, pressed charges, and Rahimi was convicted. It was an open and shut case - until it wasn't. Listen to find out how the Supreme Court kicked the door open for a violent individual such as Rahimi to potentially legally own and possess guns. After Roe was overturned, anti-abortion activists funded by right-wing billionaires got right to work - constructing and funding a lawsuit that would go after Mifepristone, a pill that is used in nearly two-thirds of abortions in the United States. The Supreme Court of the United States is now on the cusp of a decision that could decide the future of the medication. The case is FDA v. the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. In the first episode of this limited series, hosted by Lisa Graves, Grave Injustice charts the path of this case to the high court and uncovers the actors and groups behind the scenes that manufactured it and what else they have in mind. On this episode.... - 5 Takes - Your takes and low-keys - Should he stay or should he go - Falcons prioritizing mediocrity - What do we need to see in May? 1: To the left to the left, everything we had was going down the left. Points for trying, but nothing really threatening came of it. Grant it we are missing Xande but even with him in the XI we haven't been able to create any attacking threats and that continues to be the case. 2: In the voice of Paula Cole Where is our set piece threat? Why can't we score a goal? Where have all our free kicks gone? Seriously, we use to be somewhat productive from free kicks and corners and now we get very little from either. 3: We still look incredibly shaky on dead ball situations and resets in play. Literally with any stoppage in play we just don't look ready when play resumes and the scouting report is out on that aspect of this team because we're seeing more and more teams take free kicks and throw ins quickly. 4: We looked really good in the last 20 minutes. If we could just figure out the other 70 we might really have something. It continues to be a total mystery as to why we cannot play with urgency and attacking dynamism over the course of an entire 90 minutes. Clearly we can do it in moments. We just should be able to replicate that over an entire match. 5: We can't count on our counter press. We don't look in sync at all when we try to win the ball back. The players just look confused as to what the trigger for the press is. Credit to Slisz and also Dax, who we need to see more of FWIW, for individual efforts but it has to be more about the collective than one or two players. On this episode....
Ice is on excursion this week so naturally, things got weird. In the midst of X-Men fever, AJ and JJ host the first BS watchalong for episode 7 of the series. It's an interesting experiment to say the least. (FWIW, the cue to begin the episode is at the 6 minutes and 35 second mark of this show.) Once the mutant mayhem plays out, the guys touch on the latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, which apparently everyone but AJ is dodging like the plague. Of course, the NBA playoffs are in full swing, as is the WNBA pre-season (go figure) so the boys have you covered there as well. And if that weren't enough, the guys are finally safe to speak honestly and freely about the recent troubles facing America's tech sweethearts, Apple and Tesla. It's enough to make you wanna chuck your AR glasses from the window of your runaway EV. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/badslant/support

These days, it seems that Facebook, Instagram and other major social media platforms would much rather deal in cat videos than politics - perhaps political talk is too much trouble to moderate, or maybe too intellectually challenging to be much fun for much of their attention-addled audiences. In this second of two full panel discussions from this year's Unified Jam in Austin, Unified Head of Partnerships Brian Smith discusses the current collision between politics and social media with two power players in the digital political messaging space: Shaniqua McClendon is VP of Politics for Crooked Media, the producers of Pod Save America, Lovett Or Leave It and a whole array of great progressive podcasts and digital products, and Kyle Tharp is Managing Director of the political news platform Courier Newsroom and the author of the popular weekly "FWIW" newsletter. I recently tried a new humus recipe and it turned out like a soup. So I made some pasta, poured this roasted red pepper chickpea sauce on it, added some roasted tomatoes and a little homemade Italian salad dressing and boom, it is now a pretty darn good pasta salad. Maybe add some roasted chicken to it. The possibilities are endless... And now after writing this, I could have made a soup too. It can be frustrating to make something that doesn't turn out like you want, but to me it's more frustrating to throw good food away. Today I'm delighted to welcome back one of The Shift's very first guests, journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon.Bryony has been a columnist on the Telegraph for over 20 years and for ten of those she has been writing candidly about her own experiences of addiction and mental illness. She is the best selling author of Mad Girl and The Wrong Knickers and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates a global peer support network that encourages people with mental health issues to connect, for which she has won several awards. She also, FWIW, ran the London marathon in her knickers. Three years after her first visit to The Shift, Bryony is back - older, wiser (yes really) - and with a new book, the pertinently titled, Mad Woman, which discusses her struggles with burnout, binge eating and, yep, you guessed it, fluctuating hormones.Bryony joined me from bed in south London to talk about maintaining a public facade when you're privately falling apart, finally learning to feed herself properly at 43, discovering all the women in her family went into menopause in their early 40s, why she's done with feeling like she's the problem and how Davina McCall saved her life!If you'd like to sponsor Bryony's Big Challenge, you can find out more here. • If you loved this episode, you might also like my conversations with Sharon Blackie and Ruby Wax.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Mad Woman by Bryony Gordon and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Environmental allergies are curable? (Sublingual immunotherapy), published by Chipmonk on December 27, 2023 on LessWrong. I used to have severe environmental allergies to cats, dogs, and the outdoors. As I kid, I woke up crying most mornings because of my allergies, and I would occasionally wake up with croup and difficulty breathing. I even had to be taken the hospital once. Anyways, I cried enough that my mother found and enrolled me in a study for an experimental treatment called sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). For the next two years I took under-the-tongue drops, and I presume the drops were formulated with small amounts of the allergens I was reactive to. My allergies have been nearly non-existent since then. I'm sharing this post because I keep telling people about sublingual immunotherapy and they're very surprised. No one seems to know about this treatment! I'm mad about this. Maybe my improvement was unusual? I don't know. A few random studies. Please share additional information in the comments. To be clear, I still have a few mild symptoms: If I pet a dog and then rub my eyes, my eyes get slightly itchy. If a dog licks me, I get mild hives in that area. But that's all! (And I haven't observed any side effects, either.) FWIW, I might also go back on sublingual immunotherapy at some point so I can pet dogs without worry. (Because maybe my treatment was stopped too soon?) Other details: My mother says the particular drops I took costed $25 a week. They weren't FDA approved, but they were still available for purchase. From a quick brief search, I found a few that sell sublingual immunotherapy in the US: Wyndly, Curex, and Quello. I looked a few months ago and I couldn't find any significant reason to prefer one brand over the others. Please comment you have a recommendation. Note: SLIT has been available for longer in Europe than in the US, so the European brands might be better if you have access to them. Thanks for listening. For more on each of them, including what changed and the security fixes they each contain (including their CVE scores regarding urgency of concerns), see the Oracle resources I list below. Oracle calls them "critical patch updates" (yep, CPU), but they are in fact scheduled quarterly updates, so that "critical" nomenclature may sometimes be a bit overstated. And as is generally the case with these Java updates, most of them have the same changes and fixes across the versions as each other, though not always.https://www.carehart.org/blog/2023/4/18/java_updates_Apr_2023 4/18/23 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - An interesting pair of anniversaries for my blog: 600 posts, over 17 years this monthAfter I posted my last entry, I happened to notice that it was exactly my 600th post here at carehart.org/blog. How about that? And in that time I've had 3,645 comments from folks. I do write mostly for you all, so thanks!I also noticed that it marks my 17th year of blogging here, almost to the day with my first entry posted this same week back then, Apr 15 2006. That's "pretty darn interesting", as Ray Camden might say.FWIW, I'd also blogged elsewhere--yes, on CF--prior to starting this one. And the first of those posts were in early 1998--so technically it's my 25th anniversary of blogging about CF. :-)https://www.carehart.org/blog/2023/4/18/celebrating_600_posts_and_17_years 4/18/23 - Blog - Ortus Solutions - Get ready to code; Into The Box's 10th edition is just 1 month Away! Our biggest Into the Box conference is around the corner; Big shoutout to everyone already signed in and of course to all the amazing leading companies supporting the event; we're excited to learn alongside you at our 10th anniversary! If you haven't registered yet, what are you waiting for? On today's episode, we go hard in the other direction, talking about the much less mythical -10x engineer: those engineers that seem to actively work in opposition to the greater good, holding unnecessary meetings and flooding the team with a massive amount of documentation. This discussion was directly inspired by the post, How to be a -10x engineer.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4451-working-code-podcast-episode-123-negative-10x-developers.htm 4/24/23 - Blog - Ortus Solutions - Into the Box - Hackathon added to Happy BoxDuring the first day of Into the Box Conference 2023; on May 18th, we're hosting a Happy Box Party where attendees can connect and network with one another. It's a hot take on building complex systems by systems theorist, John Gall. The law resonates deeply with me; and, I wanted to pull it out into its own post so that I could share it more easily:A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true: a complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a simple system.— John Gallhttps://www.bennadel.com/blog/4452-john-galls-law-on-building-complex-systems.htm 4/24/23 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - New look for CArehart.org, especially better for the blog on mobileOK, so in my last post (celebrating my 600th post and 17th year blogging here) I happened to admit that the site still looked like it was from 2006--that's actually the year of the blogcfc 5.005 version that I based it on...and I never really changed the "look and feel" much.Until this weekend...and it may not be noticeable to all, but I suspect some things will stand out to regular readers, starting with....https://www.carehart.org/blog/2023/4/24/new_look_for_site_and_especially_mobile 4/25/23 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - Delighted to be speaking at CFCamp 2023I'm delighted to announce that I've been selected to speak at CFCamp 2023, in Munich this June. For much of the early season, there was an intense focus on the performance of Anthony Davis, and how it wasn't bad, exactly, but was definitely disappointing and not nearly at the level the Lakers need to be successful this season. But over the last seven or so games, that has definitely changed. Meanwhile, LeBron James hasn't just struggled with his health, dealing with a series of maladies (including an ankle issue that could keep him out of tonight's game against Portland). He's been pretty ordinary on the court, as well. At least by his standards, and the standard to which the Lakers will need. The effect has been particularly noticeable on offense, where LeBron's rating trails his other name brand teammates (Davis, Russell Westbrook). He's been particularly disappointing in fourth quarters, exemplified by Monday's 2-8 showing. So what do the Lakers do about it? Can they get him going, assuming James can stay on the court long enough to find a rhythm? What can LeBron do, and how hard is it to make those adjustments after 20 years of basically uninterrupted dominance? The James problem is at least tangentially related to the Westbrook problem. Because while Russ has certainly found a niche as a sixth man, it's still pretty clear he and LeBron are a really bad combination. It was the case last year, and judging by the two-person net rating for this season, it hasn't gotten any better. So when Darvin Ham plays him in the fourth - which happened Monday, a night where Ham was criticized more vocally for his rotation choices than he typically has been this year - sometimes bad stuff happens. (Westbrook's Q4 net rating is a disaster, FWIW...)And finally, Monday's loss puts a serious premium on tonight's game against Portland, because the Lakers are in real danger of giving back most of the gains from their five-wins-in-six-games burst of competence.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers blew a huge game Monday, and have turned Wednesday into about as must a must-win as you can have in November.SEGMENT 2: LeBron James has not played to his standard. Hey Culty listeners, here's part 2 of our chat with Evan Rachel Wood. If you haven't listened to part one of our chat, stop what you're doing and back that ass up. And while you're at it, make sure you watch the HBO Max mini-series Phoenix Rising if you haven't already. It chronicles Evan's fight to break away from an abusive relationship with the rocker formerly known as Brian Warner, who categorically denies being a love bombing, gaslighting, controlling, rapey, Nazi-obsessed nightmare. (FWIW, we allegedly categorically deny thinking that he's a total fuckwad.) Please note: Conversations like the one you're about to hear can be traumatizing for abuse survivors. Today, Matt & Niki delve into verbal communication - our primary means of communication as a coach, both in-person & online. While this may seem straightforward, many steps occur to correctly communicate to our clients & get them to move correctly. This begins & 3-part series of sorts where Matt & Niki will explore communication, beginning with verbal & touching on tactile & visual (and the differences between in-person and online). No video this week for YouTube viewers. We tried a new recording platform & lost the video. Bear with us while we try to improve our logistical & technological systems. Thanks! Verbal Communication on the Platform What has to occur for effective communication to occur on the platform? The coach must first see the lift, process that information, and compare what he sees to the model in his head (which may be imperfect). Following this, he must understand any deviations from the model, prioritize them, understand how to correct them, and deliver information to the lifter in the form of a cue (e.g. "knees out"). That's a lot. But communication involves two people and is a two-way street. Hearing the cue, the lifter must then understand it (each word and the words together). The lifter takes that information and use it to attempt to change her movement in light of that new information. Then the lifter moves. The coach returns to the picture, and the process is repeated. Did the lifter fix the error (and potentially additional errors)? Was there an overcorrection? Did nothing change at all? Don't worry, though, while much is involved, we can simplify this process and accelerate your effectiveness as a coach. Teaching Versus Cueing Typically, a coach takes in information regarding new lifters, to understand those lifters' backgrounds. This helps the coach determine his approach with their first interaction. Coaches may perform a teaching progression, which both gets the lifter moving correctly while including certain words & phrases that will likely inform cues that the coach may use during the lifter's sets. It can be a good idea to walk lifters through the teaching progression, especially if you're a newer coach. For online coaching, teaching may involve some how to videos demonstrating proper form. Articles and podcasts that address lifting basics may begin to deepen the lifter's understanding. Understand that in order for a cue to be effective, it must be understood. Teaching should first focus on the "how"s. Teaching enables better understanding of cueing and coaching during the sets. As teaching progresses - as the lifter & coaching relationship lengthens and deepens - the focus of teaching moves from the "how"s to the "why"s, and this is often why good coaches are born as clients, because as they improve as lifters and learn the "why"s from a good coach, they consider coaching themselves. Practical & Effective Verbal Cues Let's move past the theoretical and come to the practical. What should you do on the platform? Some basic principles of good cueing can help steer you in the right direction. Cues should be: Brief - keep cues short *Confident - don't portray doubt *Loud - cues must be heard Clear - avoid big words Positive when appropriate - a "good" communicates that the lifter is correctly performing the movement *Note: loud & confident does not mean yelling (necessarily) - deliver appropriate cue for environment & lifter Cues must be understood, and more words means more words that can misunderstood or not heard. Keep cues short and use short words. If you're a new coach and not 100% sure about the cue, act like you are. Don't deliver a cue with doubt or like it's a question. Give the cue and evaluate and re-evaluate based on the lifter's movement. Lastly, seminars and powerlifting meets can skew cue volume. Cues must be heard, but they don't have to be yelled. Furthermore, increasing the volume tends to increase the confusion. If you deliver a cue, nothing changes, and deliver it again more loudly, okay. But it needs to end there. A typical bad interaction goes something like this: lifter lifts incorrectly, coach delivers cue, lifter repeats the error, coach gets louder, lifter repeats error, coach delivers the cue again, this time yelling and getting frustrated and angry, lifter is beginning to tune the coach out. If you find yourself in this situation, stop. Shift your angle. Think about a different cue. Don't get frustrated. It's possible that this set gets away from you. That's okay. Keep observing, thinking, and coaching as best you can. Control the Platform, Control the Emotions Controlling the platform doesn't mean channeling your inner drill sergeant. You might feel frustrated and be terrified that Matt Reynolds is 5 feet behind you observing the lifter (which, if he's 5 feet behind you, you might take that as a suggestion to move 5 feet back, FWIW). Pay attention to how your lifter is responding to you and your cues on the platform. If you're frustrated, the lifter is likely frustrated and confused. Breathe. Slow things down. Encourage. Teach between sets. Think. This is how you'll become a better coach. The only way you can fail is to give up. GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE!
