He shares the joy of growing up in his small city of Riverside, New Jersey and the incredible friends and family that shaped his life. Deron's work ethic and commitment to excellence, be it professional football or community service is nothing short of inspiring. We gladly share more of Deron's history. Deron Cherry played exclusively for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1981 to 1991. He attended Rutgers University and graduated as a biology major. He played football there as a starting free safety and punter. In 1979, he was named the team's MVP. In 1979 and 1980, Cherry earned the Associcated Press All-state honors. Deron is regarded as one of the best free safeties to have ever played the game. He was a six-time Pro Bowl selection from 1983 to 1988, starting five of them in his 11 years with the Chiefs. Few other Chiefs players have been selected to this number of Pro Bowls. He had six 100 tackle seasons in his 11 years as a member of the Chiefs, with a career total of 927 tackles. In 1987, he won the Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year award. This award annually recognizes one player who goes above and beyond to perform community service in his hometown and team city. Other recipients include Bart Starr, Gayle Sayers, Floyd Little, Archie Manning, Roger Staubach, Franco Harris, Gene Upshaw, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Prior to receiving this award, he was the Chiefs NFL Man of the Year selection in 1987. This is the most prestigious award given by the NFL Players Association. The off season has hit August and with it has come news of Division III Fall Championships being canceled for the same reason Winter Championships were derailed and Spring Championships pulled earlier this year: COVID 19 Pandemic. The decision came on the heals of a vast majority of DIII institutions curtailing fall sports and many pushing winter sports starts on their campuses until January at the earliest. What does this mean for the 2020-21 season of college basketball? Specifically what does it mean for Division III? Will there be a basketball season? Will it be a six-week-or-so-sprint? Or is there a way to adjust things? On the Mid-Summer edition of the Hoopsville Podcast, we try and get some answers to those questions. We talk to one coach who actually has put together a proposal to start the season in January, with some changes to make it work including crowning a champion in April. And we talk to an administrator who also serves on the DIII Management Council to better under stand the decisions made to cancel championships and if shift a season like basketball is even possible. Plus, we honor the best of the best in the last decade of Division III women's basketball. Gordon Mann joins us to discuss how the 2nd D3hoops.com Women's All-Decade came together (and hints of work on the men's list). Guests include: Philip Ponder, Oglethorpe men's coach Jason Fein, Bates Athletics Director and DIII Management Council member Gordon Mann, D3hoops.com Senior Editor And of course, there is always the Hoopsville Notebook. A few things we take note of that have made headlines since the beginning of July. We also tip our hat to a few of those who have always helped the show be it's best.

This show starts off by recapping the Seahawks news from the past two weeks, including the sad news of former Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson passing away this week. In free agency news, Seattle continues to add to the offensive line by bringing back Mike Iupati. What does this mean for the team in terms of how they approach the 2020 draft and which players are going to be competing for which positions? With the draft beginning next week, we discuss the similarities and differences from previous drafts. Even though there are some glaring needs on defense, the team could continue to look for weapons to surround Russell Wilson with early on in the draft. With the offseason being very different this year, it could also change the way teams may want to think about their rookie players going into next season. The Seahawks recently posted a video on the tight ends position room where Greg Olsen was introduced to the current group of Seattle tight ends. To say that he'll bring a higher level of maturity to the group is an understatement and we have the clips as evidence. We also clue Luke Willson into why a grizzly bear would obviously win a fight with a gorilla. Adam has ranked the 2020 class of quarterbacks and has decided that only two rise to the level of providing a team with a quarterback who gives a team a legitimate shot at the playoffs. In the second half of the show we dive into some clips from the Mysterious Universe podcast that explores some of the origins of Pete Carroll's coaching philosophy. If you want to check out their full podcast, you can tune in around the 1:12:25 mark of their show. We also discuss a listener email that talks about just how lucky the team would be to find a pass rusher who can provide an immediate impact late in the first round or into the second round of the draft. Closing out the show, we talk about an Air Force program that combines two of the most terrifying terms to come from sci-fi films into a single program that should sound alarm bells for anyone familiar with the Terminator and Star Trek series. Kam Chancellor is snubbed from a list of All-Decade team snubs. A politician in Washington State has decided to give up politics to serve the public in another way and science and medicine tells us all why it was better for humanity that the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year. Get ready to debate! It wasn't easy putting together an All-Decade team, but all four of us came up with our own teams which of course leads to plenty of arguing and plenty of fun along the way ... We start with the infield (7:30) with Catcher being the easiest call. Then we take some time to explain our methodology for selecting this squad, but the debates really begin at 1B (16:00), 2B (20:26), 3B (24:55) and Shortstop (31:40). Did Paul Goldschmidt make the cut? Was Nolan Arenado a slam dunk? How much did steals matter? ... Getting to the OF (39:05) and DH (47:15). Mike Trout was an easy call, but Ryan Braun sparked controversy. In fact we had a lot of disagreements at these positions ... At SP (52:50), Adam gets shamed into putting Chris Sale on the team. Does Madison Bumgarner deserve a spot? And RP (58:10) was fairly easy ... Your emails at fantasybaseball@cbsi.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
