The attack on two power substations in Moore County, NC were not the first such attacks on energy facilities in the state. The North State Journal's Matt Mercer has details: On Friday, Nov. 11, a property owned by the Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) in the Jones County town of Maysville was damaged. More than 12,000 CCEC customers were without power for approximately two hours, according to a statement from the cooperative. “CCEC monitors its system constantly, and soon after the outage occurred, crews were dispatched to begin the restoration process and found that the Maysville substation had been vandalized. The Maysville substation remains off-line, but CCEC is fully able to serve all of its members through other substations,” a Nov. 11 statement reads. The total cost of the damage was expected to exceed $500,000 and insurance investigators are still working to determine the extent of the damage. The cooperative said the vandals damaged transformers causing them to leak coolant oil. Jake Joplin, CCEC CEO and general manager, stated that the cooperative “condemns this senseless act of vandalism.” The Jones County Sheriff's Department and State Bureau of Investigation were investigating the vandalism. Much like the attack in Moore County, the attacks occurred close to military installations in the state. Maysville sits 33 miles from Camp Lejeune 41 miles from MCAS Cherry Point – two Marine Corps bases with nearly 50,000 active duty and reserve members enlisted. Moore County sits just west of Fort Bragg, the largest military base in the United States. The substation attacks were first reported in Carthage, the Moore County seat which sits approximately 33 miles from the Army base. Hurricane Ian makes landfall into South Carolina, after ripping through Florida and leaving a trail of death and devastation. From NBC News: At least 12 people have died after Hurricane Ian tore across Florida with such ferocity that President Joe Biden said it could be the deadliest in the state's history. Speaking after a briefing with Federal Emergency Management Agency officials Thursday morning, Biden said that while the death toll remained unclear, early reports suggest the loss of life could be “substantial.” “I spoke with the commissioners, and they are worried,” he said. As of Thursday evening, 12 people had been confirmed dead in the storm, with seven of them in Charlotte County, an area near the stretch of the southwest coast where Ian made landfall Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, North Carolina emergency response officials are facing criticism from state lawmakers over the slow pace of reconstruction in areas devastated by Hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Florence in 2018. AP Dillon at North State Journal reports: On the four-year anniversary of Hurricane Florence landing on North Carolina's shore, a legislative subcommittee met to find out why many hurricane victims still have not been made whole. The 15-member Hurricane Recovery panel is a subcommittee of the Joint Legislative Commission on Government Operations. The formation of the subcommittee and its members were announced in July. Hurricane victims Willie Williams and his wife Geraldine, both disabled veterans with medical issues, both became emotional at times while relating their situation to lawmakers. ... Hogshead's presentation showed 4,100 applications taken since federal funds were received, but only 789 projects have been completed. According to her testimony, NCORR's current rate of construction is between five to six houses per month. Hogshead indicated the rate in 2020 was twenty-eight a month but following the pandemic in 2021 that rate dropped to fourteen a month. She added that around 1,100 applicants are currently either waiting to find a contractor willing to do the work or for work to begin. Additionally, 294 applicants are still living in temporary housing situations such as hotels or rental properties. In a column at North State Journal, Dennis Prager argues that society has largely recognized the need to control the natural tendency of boys towards physical aggression and predatory sexual behavior. However, he says we have not focused on raising girls to control THEIR natures. Specifically, girls have to learn to control their emotions. Just as the male sexual drive and violent impulses can overwhelm their conscience and their ability to think and act rationally, emotions can do the same thing in girls and women: overwhelm their conscience and their ability to think and act rationally. However, it should be obvious that at least two generations of parents — especially among the well-educated — did not teach many of their daughters to control their emotions and think rationally. The result is that women are disproportionately active in doing damage to our society.
