The Duke Basketball Roundup rarely tries to break news but when our sources told us about this piece of info, we just had to share it. It is not yet confirmed yet, but we have learned that Tyler Thornton is joining the Duke staff as an assistant coach. It is so exciting to be bringing a former captain back and to get a guy who gave it 100% every single time he stepped on the floor. Time to cue up that Kansas game tape! After the break, Jason and Donald dive into the ACC's schedule release. Duke is taking on all comers in the non-conference and now it seems they will face the toughest schedule the ACC could give them. Bring it on! Learn more about your ad choices. It was a weird week in Columbus with rainouts and promotions and callups. Logan Allen was called up to make his debut with the Cleveland Guardians Sunday, so on this week's episode, we get into his debut and where's been first. While talking about the Clippers we also talk about Tanner Bibee's first start where he "struggled" by his standards and what's next for him. We also get into:- Jhonkensy Noel's slow start and struggles - David Fry's future - Brayan Rocchio's brief call-up - The Touki Toussaint Experiment - Micah Pries slowing down after a strong start We also check in on Akron to talk about another dominant start by Gavin Williams, the decision to designate Bryan Lavastida for assignment, Tanner Burns' most recent solid start At Lake County, also discussed is Juan Brito looking like a good hitter that belongs right away, a live look at Trenton Denholm for the first time, Joe Lampe's hot start and Tyler Thornton's stuff. The DMV has been a pretty good recruiting base for the Blue Devils over the years, with guys like Johnny Dawkins and Grant Hill coming from D.C. to Durham. Two of the more recent products, Andre Dawkins and Tyler Thornton, reflect on their shared journey, dating all the way back to AAU, as well as talk about how Tyler is now Coach Ty, working alongside former Blue Devil Kenny Blakeney at Howard. Josh Hairston played basketball at Duke from 2010-2014 and then played professionally overseas from 2015-2019. He talks about growing up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, how he got into basketball, the high level of basketball in the DMV, and playing AAU with several future teammates at Duke. Josh describes his first three years of high school at Cortland where he won a state title and was named the Virginia Player of the Year, and his senior year of high school where he transferred to Montrose Christian and won Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland. He details his recruiting process, why he picked Duke, and coming in with Tyler Thornton and Kyrie Irving. Josh then talks about his highlights at Duke, some of the shortcomings, what it was like playing for Coach K, and playing in Cameron Indoor Stadium. He discusses playing professionally overseas after graduating in Switzerland, Sweden, Israel, and Italy, his decision to retire in 2019, his recent marriage, and how he is working to become an agent.
Coach P is gone, who will replace her and what does the coaching search tell us about how Duke may someday replace Coach K? Plus, we talk about a former Dukie landing a history-making recruit and how Coach K has stepped up his social justice message. And you are guaranteed to get a few laughs out of our conversation about Jordan Goldwire and Tyler Thornton. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“This isn't going to go the way you think” With only 7 days until The Rise of Skywalker, podcasters from across the galaxy assemble for the ambitious task of reliving the thrills of all 8 films in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is controversial, because Rian Johnson boldly decided to tell a story that subverts expectations. All of our submission except for one were generally positive. Our only negative submitter did not include an intro and therefore was not included in the episode. Despite being a HYPE podcast we totally welcome criticism, but oh well. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is a very pretty film, with great action, acting, music choreography, CGI, cinematography, and totally rips off episode IV, but in a good way. Duke Basketball Corner The Annual Duke Basketball Tree Pod: 2019 Edition (With Joe Gaudio) (2018-19, Ep. 29) The deep dive of all deep dives! It's tiiiiiiiime to check in with all the ex-Dukies in basketball roles. Spoiler, it's a long list. Whether it be current players, coaches, and front office personnel in the NBA or college coaches, the sheer amount of highly successful ex-Duke players (and Mike Brey) does a great job of representing how impressive the program really is. For this monumental task, I brought on Joe Gaudio to help out, a huge Duke fan based in New York who you may very well hear from again on future pods. **The audio issues from Joe's audio end are unfortunate and no fault of his. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to fix them post-recording, though I did improve the quality as best I could through editing. I apologize, will do everything possible to prevent that from happening in the future, and appreciate everyone's understanding. 0:00 Pre-Intro: Episode Overview + overlooked and extended branches of the tree (Marques Bolden, Contracts, Ingram health, JJ fun fact, DT defense, co-host) 5:34 ***Quick Audio Explanation*** 5:54 Intro + Joe’s Duke Fanhood 12:15 A crazy start to free agency 13:35 General thoughts about the Nets (Kyrie and Durant heading to New York but not the Knicks) 21:00 Achilles tears/ruptures 25:20 The New Orleans Pelicans aka The Peldevils aka The Devilcans aka Duke South aka Duke West aka Duke Southwest aka Blue Orleans (Zion, JJ, Ingram, Jah, Frank, Trajan) 31:45 RJ Barrett 34:35 Cam Reddish 36:35 Austin Rivers 37:45 Rodney Hood 39:50 Gary Trent 41:40 Trevon Duval 43:15 Amile Jefferson 45:50 Jabari Parker 47:20 Quinn Cook 49:15 Luol Deng (Real estate mogul!) 53:25 Marvin Bagley 55:50 Harry Giles 58:05 Wendell Carter 62:25 Grayson Allen 69:30 Jayson Tatum 75:45 Justise Winslow 80:45 Mason and Miles Plumlee 82:55 Honorary Dukies (Shaun Livingston and Semi Ojeleye) NBA Coaches, NBA Front Office, College Media 82:35 Quin Snyder, Dahntay Jones, Jay (it’s Jason!!)
