Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Hook (0:21). The Interview (1:47). Turning nothing into something, overcoming your surroundings, exhibiting incredible perseverance, have all served as major components to the stories of hip-hop's greats throughout the years. Today I am joined by someone who absolutely fits that bill. Someone who has succeeded with his integrity and authenticity intact. That man is Vic Spencer, who's 2022 has been stellar, dropping great records in Still Here with Doc da Mindbenda, Mudslide with Small Professor, and most recently, Psychological Cheat Sheet 3 with August Fanon. If you're interested in feeling inspired or enlightened right now, this conversation with Vic Spencer is for you! And if you're not into that sort of thing, that's cool too. I think DJ Akademiks has exactly what you're looking for! Vic speaks on how he remains so unapologetically authentic in his music (3:02). Vic speaks on how he avoids the ‘crab in a bucket' mentality that many other rap artists fall victim to (8:02). Vic dives into his challenging childhood, and how he turned his group home experiences into a positive (16:30). Vic speaks on the elevated sense of purpose in his recent records, and giving back to the youth (25:25). Vic details why he likes the 1 producer-1 rapper structure for an album (29:05). Vic provides insight into the unique 8-year long creative process for Still Here with Doc da Mindbenda (34:11). Vic illustrates why he wanted to showcase more of his lighter side on Mudslide with Small Professor (40:12). Vic details the deep connection he shares with August Fanon, and the inspiration behind the deeply personal Psychological Cheat Sheet series (43:29). Vic details the meaning behind some of the most powerful lines on a Psychological Cheat Sheet gem, “Tear Duct Tape” (57:50). Vis details upcoming projects to look out for (1:16:07). We are blessed to be joined this week by some old and new friends of the program that are making vital rap music right now. First up we have a group interview with Wrecking Crew, a conglomerate that consists of producer Small Professor and MCs Zilla Rocca, Curly Castro and Prem Rock. They are all return guests on DBRP and are here to tell us a bit more about their recent album Sedale Threat. Make sure to tap in with the Wrecking Crew and all of their affiliated projects including their podcast Call Out Culture. We consider Call Out Culture to be kind of like a sister program, we are all thinking and talking about similar music, and in fact that is where we became aware of our next guests, the incendiary duo Brian Ennals & Infinity Knives. The Baltimore-based Ennals is one of the most incisive dissectors of the issues facing America today and he relays his angry yet well written lyrics over production from the classically trained composer Infinity Knives. The result is a new sound, a refreshing take on issue-oriented underground hip-hop that makes us think of groups like The Coup. but stands on its own as a new thing entirely. Dad Bod Rap Pod is a proud part of the Stony Island Audio network.
Vic Spencer's latest album 'Mudslide' with Small Professor is now available on all streaming platforms. Vic discusses working with Small Professor, MC Tree G, whether he likes Sean Kemps, his memories of Sean Price, the inspiration for "Pirate Gold" & "Canadian Tuxedos," his favorite features, & more. Your hosts this episode: Patrique OptimalAudio After a needed break for a terrible year the LOBT pod is back to recap the year in music! In this episode they cover it all from the politically powerful products of Billy Woods, the similar attempts made by Denzel Curry, Drake going off the rails in terms of style, and just not being up to hating that much this year (though there's certainly still plenty to talk about in that regard). As well, the podcast leaves the realm of Rap to also discuss Animal Collective and Beach House's recent great output and Charli XCX slightly slipping this year. Dynamic dous have always held a special place in rap history. We needn't rattle off the iconic rapper/producer combos because we all know the potential alchemy that exist between rhyme spitter and the beat maker. On their newest collaboration Mudslide, Chicago rapper Vic Spencer and Philadelphia producer Small Professor come together and tap into that legacy of one rapper one producer magic. We were fortunate to have both Vic and Small Pro on the show this week to talk about the new album, annoying rapper trends, and more. Hosts Nate LeBlanc, David Ma, and Demone Carter also eulogize the Chaco Taco, praise the new Mykah 9 book My Kaleidoscope, and recap a recent live performance by Devin The Dude in San Jose. Dad Bod Rap Pod is a proud member of the Stony Island Audio podcast network! Shout out to the big homie Open Mike Eagle.

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING Beginning of Episode (0:49). In Episode 107, we were joined by the esoteric, abstract, and incredibly smooth rapper from Seattle, AJ Suede. Suede has delivered two of my absolute favourite albums of this year, in his Televangel-produced collaborative album, Metatron's Cube, and his collaborative album with Small Professor, Hundred Year Darkness. AJ is a very thoughtful individual with a special kind of voice that both came through loud and clear in this conversation. Suede gives us some insight into the hip-hop scene in Seattle (2:00). Suede details the influences that have shaped his artistry (5:24). Suede dives into his attraction to spirituality and philosophy (11:21). Suede details how he approaches writing to a song (15:12). Suede provides guidance on how artists can define a signature style for themselves (17:53). Suede talks which comes more naturally, beat-making or rapping, and the differences between producing his own music and working with outside production (21:41). Suede details how Metatron's Cube is reminiscent of the classic loud rap sound, but with a boom-bap twist (28:56). Suede expands on the idea of cube worship (38:22). Suede explains how him and Small Professor approached the sound for Hundred Year Darkness (41:30). Suede shouts out some other producers that he'd love to work with in the future, and upcoming projects to look out for (49:38). BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the ZILLA ROCCA and CHONG WIZARD interview session! This Phildelphia MC and Vancouver DJ/producer have been on their own individual tears the past few years. Zilla with his work with RAY WEST and ALASKA, as well as putting in work with THE WRECKING CREW, which counts CURLY CASTRO, PREMROCK and SMALL PROFESSOR as members. Chong just wrapped up his 6-part INFINITY STONE series and is at the helm of his own record label, with recent physical releases from CHRIS CRACK, LORD JUCO, NAPOLEON DA LEGEND, RANSOM and NICHOLAS CRAVEN. This fall, Zilla and Chong come together for MIDNIGHT SONS, a conceptual album loosely inspired by the comic supergroup of the same name. We talk about the genesis of the project, how features from NATURE, BILLY WOODS, LORD JUCO, CURLY CASTRO, ALASKA, DENMARK VESSEY and PREMROCK came to be and why J-ZONE unknowingly ended up shaping the entire sound of the album. The duo also break down the significance of having MALIK B (RIP) on the record, who unfortunately passed this summer very soon after recording his verse, and how RALPHIIE REESE came through in the clutch to get the verse recorded. You know what it is, Vangardians - so cap off a hectic week with your guys Doe & Meeks, light it up, pour it out ‘cause it’s that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live November 1, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
This week we focus in on the idiosyncratic rap stylings of MC Paul Barman. We've been following Paul's career since his life-changing collaboration with venerable producer Prince Paul in 2000. Paul's intricately written rhymes have consistently improved over the course of many releases and he is one of hip-hop's most unique characters. We were very pleased to speak with Paul and he proved himself to be a wily and active participant in the conversation. So please sit back and enjoy this slightly off-beat interview and some discussion and analysis of Paul's place in hip-hop culture and a bit of talk about some recent live-streamed performances we enjoyed. Beats for this week's show were submitted by Small Professor, who has a collaboration with MCPB dropping soon. Dad Bod Rap Pod is a proud part of the Stony Island Audio podcast network.
Great show this week, we are joined in the first segment by writer and host of the Serious Rap Shit Podcast, John Morrison. John is a music lover and an excellent writer and we had him on to share some of his recent news on projects we're excited about. After that we have one of the best interviews ever on the show, a deep talk with Detroit's Sterling Toles, producer of Manger on McNichols with Boldy James. Manger is a very unique album with an incredible backstory and Sterling is an inspiring person to talk to. Really just can't recommend listening to this highly enough. Beats this week are by friend of the program Small Professor from his excellent instrumental album A Jawn Supreme Vol. 1This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

Small Professor is on the mic this week to put me on game on his extensive family tree to extends to musicians, singers, and poets. His new body of work A Jawn Supreme (Vol. 1) is showcased (Vol. 2 coming) during these modern civil rights movements but the best part just might be that we're due to hear more very soon. Vol. 1 is available now, with Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 due out later this year. You can hear how this album reflects these days and times, especially during the hellscape that is 2020, on nearly every cut. It's all being released through Small Pro's Beat Goliath imprint via Coalmine Records, which previously worked in partnership on projects like his Highway Robbery collaboration with Guilty Simpson, and 2019's acclaimed 86 Witness LP with the late Sean Price. Duke Basketball Corner WF Reaction: Glass Half Full, Glass Half Empty, Or a Glass Case of Emotion? 2019-20, Ep. 25 23-5 (13-4) The blown lead sucked, but my concerns about Duke's loss to Wake Forest go well beyond a late-game collapse. -95:23- fin *I made a point about Duke's struggle against the Wake zone, and want to be clear that point was related to the first half (scored on just 5 of 23 zone possessions ) and not the second half (scored on 7 of 13 possessions before Wake stopped zoning) or overtimes (no zone). Overall, in the halfcourt, WF played zone on 23 of 35 possessions in the first half, 13 of 34 second half possessions, and 0 of 7 overtime possessions. Duke Basketball Corner DBC Deep Dive: Duke @ UNC February 8, 2020 2019-20, Ep. 21 21-3 (11-2) Time for a DBC Deep Dive to cover all aspects of a truly epic Duke-UNC game. As Jay Bilas said during the game, it always delivers, and he was right on a higher plane for what we were fortunate enough to witness on Debruary 8, 2020. Duke Basketball Corner The Big Louisville Reaction Pod 2019-20, Ep. 17 15-3 (5-2) The fourth straight single-game reaction pod is here after Duke's second straight loss, and considering I stated back in October how the season wouldn't *officially* begin until January 18th vs Louisville, this episode is extra packed with takeaways both from the game and overall. ***** The Louisville game coverage I've read and heard was underwhelming to say the least, packed with soft narratives, and I do my best to make sure each DBC episode contains far and away the best Duke MBB analysis you'll get anywhere. Duke Basketball Corner Wofford/General Non-Conf Reaction + Reunited and it Feels So Good (With Ray Holloman) 2019-20, Ep. 11 10-1 (1-0) A bit of background on on the structure of this epside: Ray Holloman is my guest on the ep, but I don't even like calling him that considering he was for a while as close as I've ever come to having a permanent co-host. Long story short, his job and family life just didn't give him the abililty to consistently record, and when we were able to arrange time, it usuall occured late at night, like really late, and ended up wrecking havoc on our sleep schedule after each, more so him than me since I don't need much sleep in general. While scheduling could be and mostly was an issue during the DBC Ray era, the ep you're about to hear reminded me of of exactly what is so great about recording with him and what's also frustrating for me, because the thing is, Ray and I love to talk Duke, like looooove to talk Duke, and we love all the details and stories and context of it. I've never been a natural play-by-play guy, always more of a color commentator, so while I've become used to playing both roles at the same time over the years, I was always tested more handling the play-by-play aspects with Ray, because I find every story he tells about something Duke-related to be worthy quality and great entertainment. The issue is the length, which coming from me is funny. Often our recording sessions would be marathons, and we'd just keep chatting after it was officially over. Often I'd have to edit out 75% of each ep's material, because I'm not going to post a four hour episode each week, whether it's split up or not. So overall, I always found it tough to cut him off and eliminate topics and do whatever I could to trim time, because if I didn't, we'd just keep going. If it sound like I'm blaming him consider the fact that I equaled out to 50% of the people recording, and I controlled the topics, so I'm not blaming anyone, and am holding myself accountable. So to sum it all up, since I cover everything current as far as news, notes, analysis, and projects each week, I just wanted him on to chat about Duke, and hopefully others would find our conversation interesting. I wanted the topics based around current Duke (and hopefully a 2010s decade ep we'll record next weekend) but more free-flowing. Basically I dind't want to get in the way. So what happens? We record for 45 minutes veering off into all sorts of territory before actually being able to focus on the first current topic, which is Wofford haha. While Ray and I do discuss key topics such as Joey Baker's role as well as the major team factor I promised last ep, I'd actually say the first 45 minutes or so is peak Ray and I, which I couldn't love any more. I'm hoping others enjoy that as well, because I recognize it's a big change of pace as far as the format. It was originally intended to give an overview of nonconference and talk about moving foward, It's not worth listing all every minor detail I had to leave out because of time, but do want to give a shoutout to my favorite overall type of shot so far this season, a shot which has existed in as pure a form as now since the day he arrived at Duke, he sunk one in Canada summer of 2018. and that's Joey Baker's shot face, one dribble, rise and fire. I need to specify, I think I mentioned Baker had played in 18 lineups from Georgia State through Wofford. I was actually talking about his 18 most played. Overall he's been in 42 different lineups and 35 filtering out garbage time, much more than 18. I was strictly referring to Duke’s 18 *most played* lineups during the time period involving Joey Baker. I stated last ep Jack White would be my choice for most underrated Duke player, then proceeded to barely talk about him, and don’t even think I mentioned him for more than a sentence on this episode. Perhaps he wouldn’t be as underrated and/or under the radar if folks like me consistently would give him more shine. Shame on me. Last thing, which I actually talked about in-depth with Ray before than I somehow blanked while recorded, I've mentioned Tre's completely re-worked form and release constantly. It's nuts to imagine how much work he put in over the summer to re-work it to such an extent. I'm done telling people what I'm going to write or hoping to write. It's been a struggle to find time and motivation, but it’s worth stating that the Tre feature is the one article I mentioned over and over, plus even offered to send anyone who requested via emial a video I’d completed showing his made non-layups during the season. It really does blow my mind that the centerpiece player of Duke completely re-worked his form and release and it’s not only not being showcased and highlighted, it’s [from what I’ve seen and heard] not even being acknowledged. Duke deserves the highest quality coverage imo, and it’s a shame the type of coverage which ends up occurring instead is focused on lazy clichés, narratives, and generalities. Feel free to email me if you’re the type who enjoys reading, because it doesn’t take much motivation to get me going if I feel like there’s a demand for it. Okay, I've rambled long enough. Hopefully everyone enjoys the holiday season doing or not doing whatever makes you happy. Hopefully you'll also get another ep in a week with Ray and I giving thoughts on the 2010s decade. Duke Basketball Corner GSU & 2KC Reaction + Projecting Duke's Go-To Lineup 2019-20, Ep. 8 6-0 Topics Include: Georgetown Overview Virginia is going next-level Virginia Zone (GSU & Cal) Coach K Facts Georgetown Breakdown Standout Strengths Rotation Weekend at Vernies Second Half Stan Hey Coach K, Please Help Tre Helping Tre Helps the Team PROJECTING DUKE'S GO-TO LINEUP More insight into two of my choices Standout Issues Closing Topics (Luka Appreciation + Scouting Rant + Joe & I complain about our crappy NBA teams + UNC's tough upcoming schedule) *Clarification: When I mentioned Tre's first PnR around 3:15, I should have made clear it was the first PnR in single coverage. As a whole, he did recieve solid (not optimal, but solid) PnR opportunities, and no matter how they occured, Duke thrived. Before going scoreless on two possessions with under three minutes left, the Blue Devils (directly or indirectly) scored 24 points on 14 possessions in which Tre received PnR at any point, an absurd 1.71 points per possession. Stats can at times be misleading without context, such as Jones getting credit for PnR at 6:25 of the 1st half (while true that Tre did pass out to Vernon, it's much more Carey simply iso-ing from above the break and driving in for a goaltended basket) but eitheir way, the bigger question is why Tre isn't getting even more PnR considering the difference in Duke's overall offensive efficiency with and without it occuring. Duke Basketball Corner Blue Collar Blue Devils? Reacting to Duke's Season-Opening Win Over Kansas 2019-20, Ep. 6 1-0 Duke's big Champion's Classic win over Kansas was eerily similar to the Blue Devils' previous trip to Madison Square Garden, which means plenty of turnovers and an alpha glue guy performance by Jack White! There's lots to talk about, and contrary to what widespread college basketball coverage leads you to believe, it's possible to do so without cliches and hot takes! *For those personally offended by non-aesthetically pleasing Duke victories, feel free to check out my very heartfelt, very serious letter to Quinn Cook I wrote back in the summer of 2012, and consider it dedicated to you.
In today's show we talk about Offset's apparent ducking of Chris Brown's fade invitation, and Dame Dash's lackluster apology to end his hate tour. Despite being disappointed, as usual, we had to discuss the Grammy's. They were surprisingly deep in some rap categories, but still made plenty of mistakes. And they managed to still offend us by cutting off Drake's acceptance speech and having J Lo do a MoTown tribute. Also, Cardi B and Offset seem to be back together. If you're surprised, you're not paying attention... For new music, we discussed: Stalley - Human Joell Ortiz, The Heatmakerz, and Fred The Godson - Gorrilla Glue Sean Price and Small Professor - 86 Witness Please review the show and share it on all of your social media. Thanks!
