If you are like most band directors, nobody ever taught you how to build wealth. Over the course of the podcasts, Josh has shared with you his ongoing strategy to invest his money such that he has the ability to retire well. This episode is an update from the last episode (Nov. 2020).Josh's suggestion on investing: 1. Invest in your company's matching 401k if available (Or continue to contribute to your state's teacher retirement pension fund).2. OPEN UP A Roth IRA! DO THIS NOW!!!!!! Once your Roth IRA account is open, invest your money in a target retirement index fund. (Josh is invested in two funds, VTIVX target retirement 2045 and VTSAX total stock index fund). Max this out every year.3. Always save and invest a large portion of your side hustle money. Only spend the interest, never lose your principal. The pandemic caused chaos, stock prices fell, panic in the market hit, so Josh stuck to the plan. As a result, he saw a 29% increase in wealth over the last year. This episode has been particularly hard to make. I apologize for the delay in content for my show. My school and the surrounding community was hit by an EF4 tornado, one of the largest on record for the state of Georgia. It damaged 1700 homes and left the high school where I teach with extreme damage. In the middle of the chaos, there is hope! It finally happened. I was in the room with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and now I am out of the classroom and teaching virtually. This episode is about what I am doing. I hope it helps. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/directingband/supportSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/directingband)
In this podcast, we discuss an idea first coined by best selling author John Maxwell. The idea is to "walk slowly through the halls." We talk about what this means to band directors. Band directors have to remember that "all band politics are local." We often forget this and start believe that national accolades equal local respect. These two ideas are discussed in this podcast. One of the hardest things that we have to do is "Let go of Good to make room for Great." This idea was covered in Jim Collins' best selling book, "Good to Great." We discuss it here as it applies to practical ways we can use this pandemic time as a means of discovering "sacred places and sacred spaces" that we can let go of in an effort to find better ways of doing things. In this episode we have special guest Andrew Lightner from Lightnermusic.com to discuss how he set up our virtual band room. Our band room is currently setup so that we have 12-15 students in-seat with another 12-25 students participating live online. Andrew has it set up so that we can see the students online just like we can see the students in-seat. We can interact with them. They can hear what is going on in the classroom. The students in-seat and online can talk to each other and interact. We are working on literature together and doing the same fundamentals that we would be doing if we were all together. This includes using the Yamaha Harmony Director, a Dr. Beat, and more. He discusses the microphone setup, google meet settings, as well as the hardware needed to make it happen. In addition, we discuss how we are using web based tools such as Practice First, Flat for Education, Soundtrap, and Musition in our classroom. To get in touch with Andrew Lightner visit his website at: https://lightnermusic.comThe show notes for this episode, including to all of the hardware mentioned in this episode can be found at: https://www.directingband.com/podcast/episode-012-andrew-lightner-and-setting-up-a-fully-interactive-band-roomCheck us out online: https://www.directingband.com or consider donating to our podcast at https://anchor.fm/directingband/support--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/directingband/supportSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/directingband)

We have been doing virtual band for two weeks now, and we are finally in a routine. The system that we developed seems to be working nicely. We have simulated a large ensemble experience online. Furthermore, we will soon start bringing students back to school in groups. This means that half of the band will be in-seat and the other half will be receiving their instruction online (in real time). Our current virtual setup is going to work great in our efforts to start transitioning to the new model.
