Dr. Onsby Rose from Dordt University joins us this week to share his unique perspective as a Composer and a Conductor.Dr. Onsby C. Rose is currently the Director of Instrumental Studies and Associate Professor of Music at Dordt University. In this position, he conducts the premiere instrumental ensemble, the Dordt University Wind Symphony, in addition to conducting the Dordt Campus-Community Band, and guiding all aspects of the Dordt Instrumental Ensembles and Instrumental Music Education programs. He is also the General Manager & Executive Director of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra and has accepted an appointment as the Principal conductor of the orchestra beginning in the 2020-21 season. Prior to Dr. Rose's arrival in northwest Iowa, he attended the University of South Carolina as a music education major and in 1997 he was accepted as a trombonist for the U.S. Marine Corps fleet bands. During his 11-year Marine Corps career he served as a trombonist and conductor with bands in Albany, GA and New Orleans, LA as well as on staff at the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA. He also served for two years as a baritone bugler with "The Commandant's Own" U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps in Washington, D.C. Dr. Rose completed his Bachelor of Music at East Tennessee State University in 2005. In 2007 Onsby was honorably discharged from the USMC. He then freelanced as a trombonist and worked as a railroad freight conductor in the eastern U.S., before returning to music education in 2012 as Director of Bands at Hampton HS and MS in Carter County, TN. In 2016, Dr. Rose completed his Master of Music in conducting at Appalachian State University. Immediately following he completed his in D.M.A. in conducting at The Ohio State University where he studied with Dr. Russel C. Mikkelson. Dr. Rose has studied conducting with Russel C. Mikkelson, John Ross, and Kevin Richardson with additional conducting studies with Jerry Junkin, Kevin Sedatole, Frank Battisti, Charles Peltz, Eugene Corporon, Donald McKinney, and Steven Peterson. Dr. Rose's outside academic pursuits encompass writing and music composition. Having studied with the late Dr. David Maslanka, Dr. Rose's musical compositions have been performed by many of the premiere military bands in Washington D.C., the Wheaton Municipal Band, numerous college and high school bands in the United States, regional orchestras, as well as internationally in Australia, Japan, Guam, and Germany.  Although Onsby views himself primarily as a teacher and conductor, he thanks God for the gift of composition. Onsby and his wife Jessica live in Sioux Center, Iowa with four of their five boys, Timothy, Caleb, Elijah and Colin. Dr. Rose is a member of numerous professional organizations to include the CBDNA, WASBE, NAfME, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. During his time at NYCB Jarod and his team of 16 artisans have created 18 world premiere ballets and are preparing for 3 more for this coming Fall and Winter seasons. Before working at NYC Ballet Jarod was the Assistant Designer and Shop Manager at Halsey Onstage, a costume production company in Chicago, IL. There Jarod worked alongside the late Travis Halsey to create over 250 custom costumes that have been worn on stages such as Sea World San Antonio, Papermill Playhouse, Houston Ballet, Vero Beach Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and for YAGP. They also created costumes that have been worn in various ballets, musicals, tv shows, and operas across Canada, Australia, and France.   Before beginning his career in costuming, Jarod grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky where he began his journey working in the performing arts by receiving his BA in Music at Morehead State University and continued education of Music Production and Technical Theatre at Troy University. Jarod has performed with various music groups on stages such as Universal Studios in Orlando, FL, the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra in Pensacola, FL, and on an international orchestra and percussion ensemble tour in Beijing and Tianjin, China. In this first episode of two with Jarod Lewis, the manager of the New York City Ballet costume shop, join host Joanne Carey as she dives into the intricacies of costume making for the New York City Ballet and some behind the scenes and stay tuned for Part II of our converstaion where we talk all things NUTCRACKER! Jarod shares his unique journey from a small farming community in Eastern Kentucky to managing the costume shop at one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world. He discusses the intricate art and science of costume making, the importance of communication in a diverse workplace, and the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jarod emphasizes the attention to detail required in costume design, including dyeing fabrics to match dancers' skin tones, and the collaborative effort involved in bringing a ballet to life. Evan VanDoren is a freelance arranger, composer, and educational consultant. As the owner of VanDoren Music, Evan is commissioned each year to create works for concert and marching ensembles. He has arranged and orchestrated award-winning marching shows for numerous high school bands across the country. Evan is an active clinician, presenting for Drum Corps International, the Music Educators National Convention, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and Music for All. He regularly consults with band programs around the country. Additionally, Evan is an active adjudicator with Bands of America, the University Interscholastic League, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. Evan is the brass arranger for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, from Santa Clara, California, as well as the leadership faculty of SASI Leadership, based in central Texas. Before devoting his life to creating music, Evan was a band director at Cedar Park High School, in Cedar Park, Texas, during which time the band was awarded multiple marching state championships and national recognition. He received a Bachelor in Music Education with Honors from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Currently, he lives in Cedar Park, Texas, with his wife, Katie, and their dog, Cooper.

Hailing from Perth Amboy, NJ, Juan "Carlito" Mendoza is a seasoned musician with over 25 years of experience. A classically trained percussionist, he excels in playing the marimba, timpani, orchestral snare drum, vibraphone, drum set, and hand percussion. Juan obtained his BA in Music Education from New Jersey City University in 2004 and earned his MA, summa cum laude, in Music Education in 2013. His musical journey has been enriched by studying under renowned instructors like Nicholas Cerrato (Timpanist for the Tony Award-winning Broadway show "Cats"), marimba expert Greg Giannascoli of the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra, and Brazilian percussion maestro Guillerme Franco.Juan's musical prowess was evident from an early age. At 13, he won Best Soloist at the national Maid of the Mist competition in Niagara Falls, Canada. His competitive spirit continued through various drum corps engagements. He performed with the esteemed Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps from Hawthorne, NJ, in 1997 and 1999-2001. In 2002, he joined the Syracuse Brigadiers, contributing to their victory at the Drum Corps Association World Championship and securing the best percussion title. That same year, Juan outperformed 35 other contestants to become the Drum Corps Association Snare Drum Champion.Juan's talents have also led him to feature in Pat Petrillo's educational DVD "Learning to Read Rhythms" by Alfred Music, where he recorded all the musical examples and appeared as a featured soloist. His crowning achievement came in 2012 when he outshone over 5,000 competitors to win the Guitar Center Drum Off Grand Champion title. Every step is planned out, but there's always room for flexibility and growth. That kind of stuff that is so streamlined and normal in the choral classroom is something we can really learn from in the instrumental world." - Micah LairdShelby Laird is from Hays, Kansas and has grown up entrenched in the choral world. Throughout her education she has had the privilege to work and learn from some inspiring and brilliant conductions including Dr. Judy Bowers, Dr. Anton Armstrong, Simon Carrington, Helmuth Rilling, Kim Ritzer, and Dr. Edith Copley. She was a Young Artist for the Ad Astra Music Festival in Russell, KS, in 2015 and now serves as their Festival Manager and sings on select projects. Shelby graduated from Northern Arizona University in December 2018 with a degree in choral music education. While at NAU, she performed with Shrine of the Ages Choir, High Altitude, Handbell Choir, and Women's Chorale, and student conducted University Singers. Additionally, Shelby served as NAU's Student Chapter President of ACDA and planned the Student Symposium for the state of Arizona in 2017. She was awarded the Outstanding Future Choral Educator of the Year for the state of Arizona in 2018 and has sung with the Sedona Academy Chamber Singers for numerous exciting projects including recording GRAMMY nominated composer Michael Hoppé's Requiem and singing backup for Josh Groban. Shelby taught choir in the Independence School District at William Chrisman High School for three years outside of Kansas City. Currently, Shelby is pursuing a master's degree in choral conducting at the University of Oregon and working with Dr. Sharon Paul. In her first year, she sang with the UO Chamber Choir and conducted the Repertoire Singers ensemble. Shelby joined the Eugene Symphony Chorus for a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and then served as Eugene Symphony Chorus Manager for Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe. This summer Shelby is singing with the University of Oregon's Chamber Choir as a part of the renowned Oregon Bach Festival. Micah Laird is a graduate of Northern Arizona University where he obtained a degree in Instrumental Music Education as the Outstanding Senior in the School of Music. During his time at NAU, Micah was an active member of the School of Music, performing with numerous instrumental and vocal ensembles including the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. While in college, Micah also toured the country with the World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps in 2015 and 2016. Micah lived and taught in Blue Springs, Missouri, where he was the assistant director of bands at Brittany Hill Middle School and an associate director of bands for the Golden Regiment Marching Band from Blue Springs High School. In addition to his public-school teaching, he was on the instructional staff for the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps and the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2022 season. Micah is also a part of the administrative staff for the Ad Astra Music Festival based out of Russell, Kansas. Greg Jackson is the Director of Orchestras at South Cobb High School in Austell, Georgia, outside of Atlanta. He is currently on staff at Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps as an Ensemble Specialist. From 2017 until 2020 Dr. Jackson was Director of Bands at Saint James School. He was the Associate Professor of Percussion studies at Alabama State University for ten years. He received the Bachelor of Science degree in Performance, Specialization in Music Composition from Austin Peay State University, the Master of Music degree in Music Theory/Composition from The University of Alabama, the Master of Music Education with emphasis in Conducting from the University of Georgia, a Cerrtificat in Advanced Graduate Studies in Orchestral Conducting, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance at the University of Alabama. Greg is the Vice-Chair of the Mentoring Committee for American String Teachers Association. Several of his compositions were premiered at the ASTA National Conference in 2022. Although his primary performing instrument now is violin, Jackson had a long career as a percussionist. In the Percussive Arts Society International Collegiate Snare Competition, he placed in the top 10 four consecutive years and top 4 two years. He has also been associated as a consultant with four Drum Corps International Individuals champions and 1 PASIC Individuals champion. Greg has performed with numerous artists including Tito Puente Jr., Sō Percussion, Son Caliente, Nancy Zeltsman, Michael Burritt, Tomas Cruz, Sandip Burman, Bob Mintzer of the Yellow Jackets, Tom Wolfe, Ken Watters, Skyler Foster, and Downright. He is also the author of Mephisto's Spree Op. 84, Etudes Op. 56, The Synergy Method for Drumming volumes 1 and 2, The Synergy Method for Marimba, Phenom: Excellence of Execution, Pandora, Legendary Op. 44, The Well-Tempered Marimbist Op. 46, Etudes Op. 48, Jackson's Rudiment Dictionary and Congas Full Circle. His marimba solo, Requiem for 9/11 Op. 45, received a special acknowledgement from President Obama. Jackson travels across the country presenting clinics/masterclasses and conducting, in addition to composing. A San Francisco-based designer who creates innovative drill, staging and artistic visual projects for marching bands, winter color guards and indoor percussion ensembles around the world. Michael performed with Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard, won a WGI World Championship with State Street Review and performed with The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps for four years in the color guard. He started an independent world class winter guard called Escapade and was on the design team of Bands of America National Champion Centerville HS. Michael attended the San Francisco Academy of Art University, earning a Fine Arts degree in Computer Arts/New Media. Michael was the drill designer and visual coordinator for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps and served on the design team for all seven of their Drum Corps International World Championship titles. He currently writes for some of the top high school marching bands and winter color guards in the United States. His designs have been featured by several high school Bands of America National Champions, the most recent being the 2012 BOA Grand National Champion Carmel HS, as well as four-time WGI World Champion Pride of Cincinnati, and two-time WGI Scholastic World Champion Carmel High School. Michael's international design experience includes two-time WGI Bronze Medalist Aimachi Color Guard, and three time WGI Bronze Medalist Aimachi Percussion Ensemble from Nagoya, Japan. In 2007, Michael was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame, and in 2011 he was inducted into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame.
