There are four orders in the āśrama: there's brahmachari, grihastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa. Each one of these is very specifically to give facility at different eras, periods in one's life so that one can give one's full attention to Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's service. As Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā (BG 2.41): "vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām." The idea Kṛṣṇa gives here is that unless you're fully dedicated to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and keep your mind fixed in one place on Kṛṣṇa and his service, then many branch. Varieties, apparently although sort of false varieties, everything's recycled in the material world. So this brahmachari āśrama is a special facility to give you full attention on your service and also to inspire others who see you and note that this is your only interest in life. You have no other business going on; you only have Kṛṣṇa's business in your life. As enrollment levels for traditional-aged college students decline, credit for prior learning has become a vital topic of conversation within higher education. Awarding credit for previous work or certifications offers a promising strategy to boost enrollment numbers. In this episode, Dr. Sara Cunningham explores how organizations like the American Council on Education (ACE) can collaborate with universities to standardize prior learning. Dr. Cunningham is the Executive Director of One Dupont Ventures, leading initiatives to improve learner mobility and success as part of ACE's Education Futures. She joined ACE's Learning Evaluations team in 2018 to help develop digital learner records and promote credit for prior learning. She previously served as the Chief Student Success Officer at Unity College in Maine after teaching in their Captive Wildlife Care and Education program. She received her PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and continues to use her understanding of animal behavior in a surprising number of endeavors. There is a longtime rule for local governments to award contracts to the lowest bidder, and now Oakland is being accused of violating that rule. An Alameda County grand jury has released a scathing report criticizing the Oakland City Council over the way it awards contracts. The report says the city ended up approving a contract for billboards with a non-profit group even though Clear Channel Outdoor had submitted a bid that would have been more beneficial to the city.
