Tim Newman explores how communication is an essential pillar for success and the challenges that students face in developing vital skills, particularly in the context of contemporary educational environments. Tim expresses a pressing concern regarding the shortcomings of the current educational system, particularly its fixation on grades over genuine learning. He underscores the importance of fostering self-esteem and encouraging students to engage actively in their educational journeys, thereby empowering them to advocate for their own learning. With over two decades of experience as a college professor, communication coach, and podcast host, Tim has dedicated his career to helping people find their voice and use it powerfully. Whether you're speaking to a packed room, hosting a podcast, or pitching your next big idea, my goal is simple: to help you become a communicator who captivates, inspires, and makes an impact. He has also developed The Formula for Public Speaking, a proven, step-by-step course that transforms nervous speakers into confident presenters. This program equips you with the skills to speak with clarity, conviction, and purpose, whether you're on stage or online.Takeaways: Effective communication is essential for achieving success in both personal and professional realms. The current education system often prioritizes grades over genuine learning and understanding. Fostering self-esteem and open communication is crucial for empowering students in their educational journey. Students should take responsibility for their education by engaging with their teachers and advocating for their needs. Educators must adapt to the changing needs of students to prepare them for the modern workplace. Welcome to the 14th episode of WAB Podcast Season 5! In this episode, we have invited two Grade 4 students, Gayi and Matteo to join us, along with their teacher Suzie Sizemore, and WAB's Curriculum Coach and PYP Coordinator Jenny Jin. Together, they explored the world of the Unit of Inquiry and their current unit Sharing the Planet. From understanding environmental issues to participating in hands-on experiments like building generators and wind turbines, they reflect on their inquiry, their critical thinking journeys, and the key takeaways from this unit. Jenny elaborated on the essence of the PYP framework, structured around six transdisciplinary themes, each housing a Unit of Inquiry (UOI). She highlighted that UOIs provide students with a chance to explore real-life challenges. These inquiries seamlessly integrate multiple subjects within a contextual framework, including Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts and Physical Education. Our Grade 4's current UOI is Sharing the Planet. Suzie introduced this unit by emphasizing its relevance in letting students understand how their daily lives intertwine with the environment and the broader world. Through this unit, students not only discover the origins of energy but also actively engage in hands-on experiments, fostering critical thinking and a realization that each individual can play a part in shaping a sustainable future. Grade 4 student Gayi shared that through the exploration of this unit, she felt she had enhanced her ability to differentiate between various energy sources such as solar power, muscle power and wind power. She prefers using renewable energy in her daily life. During a discussion on sustainable innovations, she also shared how she was inspired by a girl who created biodegradable plastic from banana peels Her peer Matteo shared he liked the process of constructing a wind turbine, recounting the challenges of crafting a sturdy base using Lego, building the blades using different materials and precisely measuring them at 14 centimeters high. He shared that after the exploration of unit, he could now distinguish different power sources, like wind power and water power, and try to stay away from using fossil fuels to make electricity. To learn more about how our students comprehend complex environmental issues, and ignite creativity and nurture critical thinking, tune in to this episode for an exploration of their UOI adventures.

We're taking a closer look at how student-led IEPs can foster genuine ownership and essential life skills and exploring ways to help students feel like active participants rather than passive attendees.Highlights:Emphasize “Nothing about me without me”—students should be spoken to directly about their goals and strengths to build trust and confidenceAll students, regardless of communication style or cognitive ability, can meaningfully participate in their IEP meetings with the right supports in placeSupport non-verbal students by practicing introductions, offering choice-based questions, or creating visual slide decks to share their inputMany students report initially feeling confused about their IEP meetings until they understood that their voices mattered, shifting their perception of the processStarting student-led IEPs early helps develop key life skills such as communication, collaboration, decision-making, and self-advocacy over timeYour challenge: Whenever your next scheduled meeting is, turn over a little bit of control to the student. School safety is more important than ever, and empowering students to speak up can make all the difference. Safe 2 Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Brittney Klein, Program Director of Safe 2 Say, says this program was created in 2019 and is mandatory that every school in the state participates. “The primary mission of this program was actually developed to avert school violence. It was developed to prevent afterschool violence in that a student, if they see something or hear something, either in school or on social media or just in talking with friends, that they can actually report it to us anonymously without any judgment or any questions.” The office soon realized after launching the program that the program did more than prevent school violence. “It actually became a program that would take a lot of steps geared toward mental health concerns among students, whether it's actually for themselves or for others. So, a lot of our top tip types that we actually receive are actually geared towards mental health concerns of our students. Since it’s launch in 2019, the program has had a huge impact on community and the schools in Pennsylvania. “I can safely say that we have averted potential school shootings through intervention and collaboration with police in our schools, and that was based off of threats that were received by another student who reported it to us. I can also say that we have five students who actually were considering suicide, and we were able to intervene and get students’ help in their students who were obviously struggling. And somebody else reported that they had concerns. So, we were able to intervene in that way as well. Our program continues to be a national leader of school safety, said one. We've received over approximately 170,000 tips and so on for the program.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Have you ever followed a nudge that completely changed the course of your life? In this episode of It's a Mindset, I'm sharing the inspiring story of Aviv Palti, the CEO of Lifestyle Brands, co-founder of the Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST), and author of Empowered. Aviv and his family have had a profound impact on countless lives in Cambodia, empowering students and families to break the cycle of poverty through education. Back in 2009, Aviv's daughter was denied a life-changing school trip to Cambodia to volunteer with disadvantaged rural families. Instead of letting that opportunity slip away, Aviv and his family embraced the chance to travel to Cambodia together, volunteering to teach English at a rural school in Siem Reap province. Those two weeks would change not only their lives but the lives of thousands of rural Cambodian students and their families. Many of their students were the children of survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime and the subsequent civil war. While their parents were illiterate, they understood the incredible value of education. This experience inspired Aviv and his family to return to Cambodia several more times, eventually founding the Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST) in 2011. The trust was built on three pillars: Education, Empowerment, and Inspiration, with the goal of sustainably breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a ripple effect that continues to impact thousands of lives in Cambodia. Aviv is also the author of Empowered: A New Generation of Leaders, which tells the inspirational story of rural youth in Cambodia who empowered themselves and their families to rise from poverty to the middle class in just eight years. Key Episode Takeaways: The power of embracing unexpected opportunities when Aviv and his family decided to volunteer in Cambodia ultimately leading to the founding of CRST. The history and resilience of Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge regime and the civil war, and how education has become a vital tool for healing and empowerment. The CRST three pillars of Education, Empowerment, and Inspiration are helping break the cycle of poverty and creating a lasting ripple effect. The 5 steps to creating lasting impact - dream big, plan, act, correct, and continue—key steps for anyone starting an impactful project. As someone who has also experienced Cambodia's incredible beauty and humbling culture, I relate deeply to Aviv's mission. His family's commitment to making a difference is awe-inspiring, and I encourage you to listen and discover how we can all contribute to this transformative work. Just $25 can make a difference, and I've personally donated to this incredible initiative. About the Guest: Aviv Palti is the CEO of Lifestyle Brands, a homewares company he co-founded 40 years ago. In 2011, along with his family, Aviv founded the Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST), a non-government organisation based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Built on the three pillars of Education, Empowerment and Inspiration, CRST has sustainably broken countless cycles of poverty, and continues to create a far-reaching ripple effect impacting thousands of lives. In the ninth episode of Season 5 of the WAB podcast, Grade 11 student Chloe, Grade 8 student Luca, and Rachel George, Head of Middle School Counseling, joined us to discuss the significance of the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program at WAB. Their conversation highlighted how SEL is integral to a holistic educational approach, fostering personal growth and active student participation. Rachel explained that SEL transcends lessons; it empowers students to improve their social-emotional skills by leveraging real-life situations. She outlines five core components of SEL: self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. Rachel emphasized that these components help build a supportive environment that enhances students' sense of belonging, which in turn positively impacts their academic study. Grade 11 student Chloe shared her appreciation for the diverse perspectives within the SEL program, noting that students can learn from one another's strengths. Grade 8 student Luca echoed this sentiment, highlighting how SEL prompts reflection on social relationships and mutual appreciation among peers. Both students expressed enthusiasm for the continuous improvement of the SEL program through collaboration with external partners and student feedback. Chloe mentioned the SEL task force, which enabled students to suggest relevant topics and enhance lesson structures. Rachel reinforced the importance of student input in tailoring the program to meet their evolving needs and ensuring its relevance as students grow. Tune into this episode to discover how WAB's SEL program cultivates a nurturing environment that supports both academic success and personal development.

We start by discussing the importance of hands-on learning and how it keeps students engaged and passionate about the trade. Dorman shares his experiences in building a successful welding program, highlighting the need for modern equipment and innovative teaching methods to meet the demands of today's workforce. One of the key themes we explore is the critical role of mentorship. Dorman and I talk about how personal development and mentorship can shape the next generation of skilled tradespeople, preparing them not just for jobs but for life. We also delve into the cultural shift needed to truly value vocational education and the challenges vocational programs face, from class sizes to funding and on-site training opportunities. Dorman's unique perspective as someone who transitioned from a military background to education adds depth to our conversation. He emphasizes the importance of teaching life skills, fostering passion in students, and creating comfortable learning environments where they can thrive. We also touch on the growing skills gap in the industry and the necessity of equipping students with both technical and soft skills to succeed. Throughout our discussion, we share inspiring success stories, including women breaking barriers in welding, and talk about the role of technology and social media in making vocational education more accessible and relevant. It's an eye-opening conversation that underscores why skilled trades are vital for the future of our workforce and the energy sector. Can trying to solve every student problem actually hold them back? Join us as we explore this provocative question, inspired by Donald Winnicott's concept of the "good enough parent.” We'll dissect the instinct to "fix" and consider how stepping back can empower students, helping them build resilience, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills, ultimately fostering their independence and emotional strength while lightening your workload. We'll also challenge the unrealistic standards set by the ASCA National Model, questioning whether the relentless pursuit of perfection is truly beneficial. With only 1.1% of schools achieving RAMP status, it's clear that these high bars can create an unsustainable work environment. Instead, we advocate for "good enough school counseling," embracing imperfection and focusing on meaningful, manageable impacts. 00:00 Introduction: The Well-Meaning Instinct of School Counselors00:41 Empowering Students by Doing Less01:06 Listener Reviews and Feedback02:55 The Urge to Fix: A Common Challenge04:25 The Concept of 'Good Enough' Counseling07:54 Statistics and Realities of School Counseling10:45 Sustainable Practices for School Counselors21:54 The Importance of Empowering Students22:42 Conclusion and Final Thoughts*********************************References/Resources:Clemens, E.
