In this episode of SELinEDU, Dr. Krista Leh sits down with Dr. Natalie Odom Pough, a mathematics educator and advocate for joyful, justice-centered learning, to explore what she calls the soft life. Together, they unpack the idea that learning environments do not have to be rooted in pressure, comparison, and compliance—but can instead be spaces where students feel seen, respected, and capable of growth.Through stories from her work in middle school math classrooms and her own experiences as a parent and educator, Natalie shares how identity, culture, and personal experience shape how students engage with learning. She challenges the notion that math exists in isolation, offering powerful examples of how relevance, real-world context, and student-centered design can transform both engagement and understanding. From rethinking word problems to connecting math with history and community, she reminds us that meaningful learning happens when students can see themselves in the work. The conversation also highlights the deeply human side of teaching. Natalie reflects on what it means to truly see each student—even in large classrooms—and how relationships, consistency, and communication with families create the foundation for both academic and social-emotional growth. She shares practical ways educators can support productive struggle, build classroom culture over time, and shift from comparison-driven environments to ones that honor each student's unique abilities. At its core, this episode is a reminder that social emotional learning is not separate from content—it is how learning comes to life. When we center students as individuals, treat learning as a conversation, and create spaces grounded in respect and belonging, we open the door for both rigor and humanity to coexist.Chapters00:00 The Soft Life in Education05:43 Empowering Students in Math13:01 Seeing Students as Individuals18:02 Social Emotional Learning and Teaching37:22 Productive Struggle and Discourse in the Classroom

In a recent episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Elise Stine Dolinar, the driving force behind Bright Futures Frederick/Winchester. Their conversation, happening against the backdrop of the annual "Camping for Hunger" week, delves into the heart of a community initiative that goes far beyond simply filling backpacks with food. Bright Futures, as Elise passionately explains, is dedicated to ensuring that every student—regardless of circumstance—has access to the essentials they need to succeed in school and in life. The Weekend Food Pack Program: Logistics and Love At the core of Bright Futures' efforts is the weekend food pack program. Each week, volunteers assemble over a thousand bags of shelf-stable, allergy-conscious food items. These bags are discreetly placed in students' backpacks, ensuring that children who might otherwise go hungry have enough to eat until school resumes. Elise describes the logistical ballet required to coordinate donations, manage inventory, and accommodate special dietary needs. The program's success hinges on the generosity of local donors and the tireless work of school staff and volunteers. Beyond Hunger: Clothing, Hygiene, and Dignity However, Bright Futures' mission doesn't stop at food. Elise and her team respond to a wide range of student needs, from winter coats and shoes to hygiene products and even sleeping bags for homeless youth. The organization works closely with school counselors, who act as the eyes and ears on the ground, identifying students in need and maintaining their privacy. This system ensures that help is delivered quickly and discreetly, preserving the dignity of every child. Community Collaboration: Volunteers and Donors Step Up Transitioning from logistics to community impact, Janet and Elise highlight the crucial role of volunteers and donors. Whether it's a church group packing food bags, individuals donating new coats or clearing out store shelves during sales, the community's involvement is the lifeblood of Bright Futures. Elise shares stories of last-minute shopping trips for shoes and the creative ways the team stretches every dollar, often leveraging partnerships with organizations like the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to maximize the impact of cash donations. Facing Challenges: Holidays, Snow Days, and the Unexpected The conversation also addresses the unique challenges posed by school breaks and unexpected closures. Elise explains how Bright Futures prepares special food boxes for holidays and adapts quickly when snow days disrupt their carefully planned schedules. Flexibility and foresight are essential, as is the unwavering commitment to never turn away a child in need. Empowering Students and Staff As the conversation wraps up, Elise emphasizes the importance of empowering both students and school staff. In-school food pantries allow older students to access food independently, while donations help relieve the financial burden on teachers and counselors who often dip into their own pockets to help students. The organization's work, Elise notes, is only possible thanks to the "angels in the schools" and the broader community that believes in supporting every child. A Call to Action Ultimately, this conversation shines a light on the power of community action. Bright Futures stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with compassion, creativity, and a shared vision. As Janet and Elise urge, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, everyone has a role to play in ensuring that no child is left behind. Across the U.S., students are heading back to school. But here's the reality: despite record levels of public education funding, student performance is flat—or more likely declining—in many places.Nearly twenty states have adopted near-universal Education Savings Accounts, giving families more freedom. Yet in many others, progress lags. Even where legislation has recently passed, like in Texas, the programs often fall short of true, universal choice in terms of all students, all options, and all dollars. The time for a school choice revolution is now! In this episode of This Week's Economy, I break down why education needs choice, competition, and innovation—and how those principles can transform not just the lives of individual students, but families, communities, and the future of our nation. You can catch the full episode on YouTube, Apple Podcast, or Spotify.Visit: VanceGinn.comSubscribe: VanceGinn.Substack.com

The traditional education model we've been using since the 1940s was designed for assembly line workers. But this system is failing to prepare kids for real life. This week, I'm talking to Dr. Linda Hopper, a former business coach turned classroom teacher, who turned the system upside down by bringing coaching principles into the classroom. After spending 14 years in the classroom, Dr. Hopper found that asking the right questions - rather than just giving the right answers - is the key to helping kids grow and learn. Join us today as Dr. Hopper shows us how we, as educators and parents, can empower kids to become experts on themselves. Her approach shifts the focus away from standardized tests and helps students build skills that last a lifetime. Reading has power. That's a pretty straightforward and obvious universal truth, right? Well, for students with language-based learning disabilities, literacy doesn't come easily, and for a long time, classrooms weren't equipped with strategies or programs to help. Nearly 20 years ago, Nancy Blair and Pat Roberts set out to change that. The first step was launching AIM Academy in suburban Philadelphia. The second was creating the AIM Institute for Learning & Research. Next? The duo has a book in the works, making for a timely opportunity for Women to Watch's Sue Rocco to touch base with two guests who first appeared on her show a decade ago. Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Tim Newman explores how communication is an essential pillar for success and the challenges that students face in developing vital skills, particularly in the context of contemporary educational environments. Tim expresses a pressing concern regarding the shortcomings of the current educational system, particularly its fixation on grades over genuine learning. He underscores the importance of fostering self-esteem and encouraging students to engage actively in their educational journeys, thereby empowering them to advocate for their own learning. With over two decades of experience as a college professor, communication coach, and podcast host, Tim has dedicated his career to helping people find their voice and use it powerfully. Whether you're speaking to a packed room, hosting a podcast, or pitching your next big idea, my goal is simple: to help you become a communicator who captivates, inspires, and makes an impact. He has also developed The Formula for Public Speaking, a proven, step-by-step course that transforms nervous speakers into confident presenters. This program equips you with the skills to speak with clarity, conviction, and purpose, whether you're on stage or online.Takeaways: Effective communication is essential for achieving success in both personal and professional realms. The current education system often prioritizes grades over genuine learning and understanding. Fostering self-esteem and open communication is crucial for empowering students in their educational journey. Students should take responsibility for their education by engaging with their teachers and advocating for their needs. Educators must adapt to the changing needs of students to prepare them for the modern workplace. Resilience and empowerment are key components in helping students navigate challenges and advocate for themselves.
