How can the experience of the theatre be made more accessible to those in regional communities, lower income or living with a disability? And how do you deliver your solution when it's excluded from the existing guidelines of funding organisations? In this episode, Tammy chats with Grant Dodwell, multi-Logie Award winner and founder and Creative Director of Australian Theatre Live, about bringing the theatre to the people. Grant has combined the beauty of the arts with the technological advancements of the digital age to deliver filmed theatre productions through roadshows and streaming channels to those who may not otherwise have the experience. We hear how this innovation didn't fit with funding designed exclusively for screen or theatre. However, funding boosts during COVID-19 allowed the organisation to broaden their reach and expand their team. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Ricki Hersburgh, Executive Director of Plastic Oceans Australasia. Fuelled by data, research and their resulting facts, Ricki Hersburgh is on a mission to drive behavioural change in plastic use. With an in-house Technical Advisory Panel and public education team, Plastic Oceans Australasia has been able to pair research with delivery. In this episode, we discuss how they focus on understanding the drivers of consumer behaviour, so they can effectively intervene and reduce the use of plastics. We also discuss the value of collaboration between organisations and how this can effectively fill capability and knowledge gaps when resources are limited. As a scientifically based organisation, data collection and its use are also highlighted to understand the ‘what and why?' in analysing plastic pollution and contribute to the ‘how' in addressing the problem. Furthermore, we hear how Ricki attracts volunteers for their Technical Advisory Panel and how leaders should follow the ‘what's in it for them?' principle to help retain volunteers. Finally, you can get involved in the cause with ‘Picnics Unwrapped' - an initiative to host a plastic-free picnic and raise funds in September. Or do you have a great story on tackling a plastic-related problem? Entries are now open for the Oceans in Motion film festival, with categories available for primary to tertiary-aged students and members of the boating community in Australia or New Zealand. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Hanna Andrevski, CEO and Founder of Roundabout Canberra. From identifying a market gap whilst on maternity leave, Hanna Andrevski takes us through her evolution as a start-up charity founder. From building good boards and the value in learning from others to utilising technology as a Not for Profit. Roundabout Canberra is truly a best practice case study for a small charity. Without a background in fundraising, Hanna came to terms with her initial reservations about ‘asking for money' and how she now appreciates the value charities provide is worthy of financial support. Also related to funding, we discuss balancing a mission with financial sustainability and why the organisation has avoided the common op-shop model for their donated goods. From the rapid formation of Roundabout Canberra, Hanna acknowledges the benefits of having established ‘sister orgs' in other states to provide policy and procedural advice when starting. We also learn how Roundabout collaborates with other organisations to minimise donation waste. Finally, we hear how they used a technology grant to help them efficiently manage volunteers, inventory and orders online. Thank you for listening to the Executive with a Cause podcast. IT in Plain English Known by many names and acronyms, a Request for Tender (RFT) is common amongst many Not for Profit organisations when seeking a product or service. But this process can be time-intensive, and costly, and it doesn't allow you to determine if you can even afford the requested tender until provided. Experienced in both providing and responding to RFTs, Tammy summarises when RFTs may be suitable, such as when comparing stock items that aren't customised, and when an alternative process might be better. In this episode, Rodney offers Not for Profits advice on how they can use digital marketing more effectively in their organisations, some that cost nothing, such as Google Ad Grants. The power of LinkedIn is discussed for its ability to bring together users over shared interests and provide a ‘face', unlike more anonymous Facebook organisation connections. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Jim Lynch, founder of Zealandia, an eco-sanctuary in Wellington, New Zealand. From a pipe-dream in the nineties to creating what's heralded as the world's first ‘mainland island eco-sanctuary,' Jim takes us through the journey of turning his conservation passion into a financially sustainable park that has inspired others with his 500-year plan. Jim recognised that conservation projects often lived and died with their founder. Therefore, from the beginning, Zealandia's plan was for diverse income streams to support this long-term vision, including raising revenue and awareness through their in-person sanctuary experiences. Now expanding this conservation model, Jim hopes to apply the restoration approach to Puketahā in the Wellington region, and beyond. Thank you for listening to the Executive with a Cause podcast. Increasingly popular as software becomes more accessible, this ‘doubling up' of the IT function can pose a data and governance risk to your organisation. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Francis Owusu, Founder and CEO of Kulture Break. Kulture Break isn't your average dance studio. Instead, it breaks stigmas and builds futures for young people. Still, the popularity of its programs and growth in general has its limits. Francis takes us through the challenges of recognising when service offerings need consolidation and avoiding the temptation to create programs specifically for funding opportunities. Stretching yourself too thin is another theme many listeners will relate to in his lessons. Furthermore, online approaches that allow us to be ‘in multiple places at once' aren't unique in the COVID-era. Fortunately for Kulture Break, they adapted to online offerings prior to the Pandemic, highlighting the importance of being able to diversify and pivot for long-term sustainability. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Kelli Jackson - Head of Women's Adventure ACT, avid unicycler, Macpac Ambassador and 2022 ACT Woman of the Year. With an MBA and background in accounting, Kelli Jackson may not be who you expected to run a women's adventure group full-time. Kelli initially inherited this ad-hoc Meetup Group and then transformed it into a community of thousands of women in the Australian Capital Territory by running over 460 outdoor events, from canyoning to canoe polo and everything in between. What might appear to be just a "sporting" group for women, the flow-on effects of introducing women to the outdoors and the related empowerment from developing new experiences and skills have been surprising and immeasurable. And it all started with establishing the organisation's values upfront. There's a lot of exciting content in this episode, including tales of unicycling world records. Still, perhaps one of the most intriguing concepts discussed is utilising 'futuristic' tech for grass-roots organisations. Kelli discusses her fascination with thinking big for the future of organisational fundraising and the opportunities DAOs', or Distributed Autonomous Organisations could provide. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Cindy Reese Mitchell, the founding Chief Executive Officer and currently the Chief Impact Officer of Mill House Ventures. Matchmaking and social impact probably aren't two themes you expect in the same sentence. But in today's episode, Cindy explains how some of her many roles include being an identifier, capability builder and connector for social enterprises. Social enterprise is a relatively new term. Cindy's key objective is assisting organisations in achieving commercial viability with community impact. Furthermore, many aren't even aware operating for profit doesn't preclude an organisation from identifying as a social enterprise! Cindy also takes us through her fascinating PhD work on developing Indigenous female entrepreneurship in the Kimberley region. Supporting this discussion, she finishes with how social entrepreneurs should operate in short-term operating models rather than long-term ‘prop up' engagements to achieve meaningful solutions. In this episode of Executive with a Cause, host Tammy Ven Dange chats with Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean up Australia and their Managing Director, Terrie-Ann Johnson. When Clean Up Australia's founder, Ian Kiernan was shocked by the amount of litter pollution in Australian waters, he organised a local clean up. Over thirty years later, the organisation has become the country's ‘largest community-based environmental event', with partners including McDonalds, Coles and Sodastream. Clean Up Australia has developed a valuable data source on waste trends over time. Their data now provides input for government policy on areas such as single-use plastics and the container-refund schemes whilst remaining accessible as they believe it "belongs to the community." Technological enhancements have also improved how they capture this data. The organisation's 'Citizen's Science Project' is an example of how the team increases volunteer engagement and responds to emerging waste trends. We also discuss the importance of good partnerships and how Not for Profits should maximise the skills and resources these relationships can provide.
