Following on from last week's podcast with the daunting fact that on average you have 4,000 weeks (if you are lucky and live to 80), combined with lots of chat in the Equiteam Connected group, Equiteam's Lou Gillings set about researching different goal setting methods, which she used for the base of her blog 'How hard are you willing to work'. Lou explored different methods outside the traditional SMART goal comfort zone and came across WOOP and ACID goal setting which spiked her interest as it got her thinking about the possible obstacles, and also how much she really wanted her goals. I'm immeasurably uplifted by some Trade Me data. Could it be we are finally getting the message on rural or provincial New Zealand? Job data increasingly shows we're looking to the regions for work. More people (68%) are prepared to move, supposedly. Always be careful of surveys because what people say versus what they do doesn't always equate. But at least some of the 68% must actually pull the trigger. There has been a 12% month-on-month search increase in job ads. The likes of New Plymouth is up 40%, Invercargill is up 37%, and Palmerston North is 23%. I have said for years, if you can do what you do anywhere, why would you do it in a place you can't afford to live in? A lack of money makes life miserable. It limits choices, makes us stressed, and closes financial doors. Too many people are stuck in places like Auckland. Auckland is disproportionately large and the salaries that this country pays, on average, do not support a decent life in a place like Auckland, or Queenstown, or possibly even a large slice of the Bay of Plenty. But there are a lot of jobs where the wage is the same no matter what the location. In fact, one of the most glaring pieces of intel is your average wage and it's broadly the same in most places in the country. It's a little higher in Wellington because of the public service, but overall, between $70,000-80,000 is where we sit on average. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that if, as a couple, you earn two lots of $70,000-ish a year, $140,000-ish together, it goes a hell of a lot of further in Nelson than it does in Auckland or Queenstown. The house on the West Coast is nothing like the north of the country. This land is festooned with amazing provincial cities that have a lot of the big city access and choices. Even Christchurch, which is booming, is still comparatively affordable and by the time you get to small town New Zealand you are rolling in it in your $500,000 house, no commute, later get-up, less stress, and all the while doing the same job. So I hope the stats are real and the move is on. There is a lot of New Zealand that has never been fully utilised or appreciated. If your lot is too hard, move. You won't know yourself. Therapist Jo Robertson says this technology could be useful - but it's important to also discuss these issues with an actual human being too. Most people overcomplicate leadership. They're looking for the next framework, trying to do technical leadership that just doesn't work. Paul Adamson spent 25 years sailing yachts around the world—including two years circumnavigating with Eddie Jordan on an Oyster 885—and he learned that leadership isn't about theory. It's about making decisions without all the information, leading from the front, and remaining calm when the pressure is on. Then he walked into Oyster Yachts (the manufacturer of those luxury yachts) when it went into administration, won it out of admin by deliberately breaking the rules, and rebuilt it from zero to a £200M order book with 700 employees in four years. In this episode, Paul reveals why great leaders are energy-rich (not uninspiring boring managers), why you can't KPI great leadership, and why the three levers of state management—focus, inner dialogue, and movement—underpin everything in business. He shares his Virgin Atlantic story about blagging a gold card, getting upgraded to upper class by a flight manager who knew when to break the rules, and how copying Richard Branson into an Instagram post led to a phone call that changed everything. He also opens up about being diagnosed with lymphoma two weeks after leaving Oyster, how he applied everything he'd taught for years to his own health challenge, and why that gift led him to help raise £3M for follicular lymphoma research that could unlock cures for pancreatic cancer, leukaemia, and other incurables. What you'll learn:⚡ Why great leaders are energy-rich and how to manage your state (focus, inner dialogue, movement)

Anto Yeldezian is a Tāmaki-based artist of Armenian heritage, who works amongst an expanded painting practice that often leans into methodologies of printmaking. Utilising methods of monoprinting, and stencils, along with a playful use of paint and material exploration. Within his current solo show Desert Island on at Coastal Signs, Yeldezian presents a series of 7 large scale works on raw loose canvas. Installed in a manner in which the works almost engulf the gallery walls, and bring the space into a continuous field of symbols, and marks.  The works themselves harness this heavy use of motifs, and symbols as a kind of centering point to the show. The references include camels, palm trees, oil pump-jacks, Homer Simpson's thirsty bird'; ancient fossils, the triple Gs of Canterbury Clothing Company, union jacks and logos of American defence and oil companies.  Through the making of the work Yeldezian takes these symbols and applies them to various painterly techniques that almost pull them away from their own inherent meanings/references and into this place of a pattern-like language with its own set of meanings. Maya caught up with Anto about the show as well as his overall practice.

In this episode, we listen to words of consolation, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 197, penned by Maamoolanaar. Set in the ‘Paalai’ or ‘Drylands landscape’, the verse etches the domain with a heartwarming simile. In this trip to this domain, we get to hear the confidante say these words to the lady, at a time when the man remains parted away, having left in search of wealth: “Your eyes, akin to dark flowers, have lost their hue; Akin to a pillow that has lost its plumpness, your arms have thinned; The beauty of yours, celebrated by your good friends, have lost the old state! With the sorrow of realising all this, do not suffer ceaselessly, my friend, may you live long!  The one, who parted away, making your neat row of bangles slip away, left to the terrifying drylands, which makes one shiver, where akin to the scene in a home, when upon the chest of a strong man, lying down embracing his naive woman, with darkness-like, thick tresses that fall beneath her arms, his young son, with coarse hair, crawls down, on the body of a male elephant, one of a herd, having white tusks, which had been embracing its naive and fully pregnant mate, its calf would climb up and descend down. Indeed, he has parted away, without any grace, with a heart that was pressing him to go on his mission through the drylands, near the soaring mountains, filled with golden shower trees, having radiant flowers. Always chasing away those who dared to rise in opposition, Kannan Ezhini rises with furious strength, wielding a courageous army. Even though your man has crossed the honey-covered, ancient peaks of his, he shan't delay any longer!” Time to tread the scorching spaces again! The confidante starts by describing how the lady’s eyes, her arms and her beauty had lost their old state. After acknowledging these changes, the confidante asks the lady to not keep worrying so. Then, she describes the drylands path where the man is traversing, and to do that, she zooms on to a scene in a home, where a little boy would be crawling on the chest of his father, as that man lies embracing his wife with long tresses. Then, the confidante connects this scene to that of a male elephant and its pregnant mate and the way, an elephant calf would be playing, climbing on its father’s back and rolling down. Doesn’t seem like a scary place to me! In any case, that’s how the confidante says this place is, and talks about how the man walks through these lands, crossing highlands with golden shower trees, and walking beyond the peaks of a courageous king named ‘Kannan Ezhini’. The confidante ends by saying while all that is true, the man wouldn’t dream of staying there one moment longer than necessary and would be back soon with the lady.  That scene with the bonding elephant family must be the confidante’s way of projecting the image of future happiness the lady is going to experience once the man returns. Utilising the effective techniques of acknowledging the pain of the present, and visualising the pleasure of the future, this expert ‘psychologist’ of Sangam times heals her languishing friend!

Navigating Leadership: The Six Styles for Situational Success

In this episode of the People Performance Podcast, T2 consultants James Cooper and Spencer Locker, deep-dive into leadership styles based on the situational leadership model used by T2. The key takeaway is that effective leaders must be able to adapt and deploy the most appropriate leadership style for a given situation and the mindset of the person they are leading, rather than relying on a single, default style. The six leadership styles discussed are:Visionary : Getting people behind the long-term dream or "flag on the hill". It sells the why without giving day-to-day steps. Deploying it inappropriately can be ineffective if people are missing strategy or need immediate answers.Amiable : Focuses on peace, harmony, and promoting trust within the team and environment (psychological safety). Coaching : Utilising coach-like skills for development and improvement. It involves helping people find their own ways to address strengths and weaknesses. It is deployed when people are open to development but may not be performing as desired.Collaborative : Proactively bringing people together to be inclusive and involve them in decision-making, especially in newly established but knowledgeable teams. This style can establish a collaborative culture where the leader may eventually step back to be just the decision-maker.Pace Setting : Setting high standards and moving at pace, but only when appropriate and with competent people. It should not be mistaken for micromanaging; it is about providing high-quality intelligence and giving people the freedom to apply themselves. It is used to challenge and push people beyond competency to avoid complacency.Directive : Characterised by a lack of ambiguity and absolute clarity, not aggression or confrontation. It's a "call to action" and is appropriate in critical situations, like emergency services, where clear instructions are paramount. In a performance context, it gives a clear choice with consequences for growth or further conversation.Social Links Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/peopleperformancepodcast/LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/t2-thepeopleperformancepeopleTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@peopleperformancepod

Nick welcomes media expert Omar Hamdi from Dubai to discuss the evolving landscape of media coverage, publicity, and public relations.  With a rich background in traditional media and a passion for technology, Omar shares insights on how businesses of all sizes can leverage media tech to enhance their visibility and authority. The conversation delves into the importance of strategic intent behind media engagement, the role of verification in building trust, and the complementary relationship between personal branding and media coverage KEY TAKEAWAYS Before engaging with media, it's crucial to define the purpose of the PR efforts. Understanding what you want to achieve and who you want to reach can significantly enhance the effectiveness of media coverage. The landscape of media has evolved with technology, allowing businesses of all sizes to access PR opportunities. Utilising media tech can streamline the process of matching stories with the right publishers, making PR more accessible. Leveraging media coverage can enhance a business's authority and credibility. When reputable publications endorse a brand, it adds a layer of trust that can influence potential customers' decisions. Consistency in media engagement and content creation is essential. Building a brand's presence takes time, and results may not be immediate. It's important to trust the process and remain committed to long-term strategies. BEST MOMENTS "If you use technology in the right way, you can make PR accessible to businesses of every size." "The point of the media is in the verification... That's why it's such a letdown when... an esteemed organisation like the BBC edits an interview." "You need to be doing multiple things. You need to be leveraging the sources that align with what your goals are." "The biggest mistake is doing it without any of those things, not knowing why you're engaging with the media." In July 1985, music legends Mick Jagger and David Bowie were asked to perform a duet with a twist at Live Aid, the biggest concert in pop history. Utilising the latest satellite technology, Mick would perform on the US stage in Philadelphia, while David would perform on the UK stage at Wembley Stadium. As the technical issues were being discussed, it soon became obvious that a half-second delay in the link between cities would prevent the live performance from happening, so a recording was planned instead. A short list of songs was discussed before the duo finally settled on the Motown classic Dancing in the Street. Live Aid press officer Bernard Doherty tells Des Shaw how the duet and video were recorded in just 18 hours and became a highlight of the benefit concert on 13 July 1985. Send me a messageIn this episode of the Sustainable Supply Chain podcast, I'm joined by Gary Loh, CEO of DiMuto, who brings a refreshing perspective on fixing the fractured agri-food trade. Gary's insights shine a light on the 30% of food wasted globally and how digital tools like AI, IoT, and blockchain can help us reduce that figure. We discuss why traditional silos, where growers, packers, shippers, and retailers rarely share data, need to be broken down. Gary explains how DiMuto's approach aligns economic incentives for everyone in the supply chain, driving transparency and reducing food waste. He also delves into how real-time data is empowering smallholder farmers, opening up access to trade financing and reducing costly claims. We also touch on the impact of US tariffs, shifting climate conditions, and FSMA 204 compliance, and why digital transformation is no longer optional. Gary's journey from finance to agriculture shows that real change comes when you address the incentives and give farmers and buyers the tools to see the full picture. If you're serious about building a transparent, resilient supply chain, or just curious how aligning incentives, AI and data can cut waste in our global food system, this episode is worth a listen.Elevate your brand with the ‘Sustainable Supply Chain' podcast, the voice of supply chain sustainability.Last year, this podcast's episodes were downloaded over 113,000 times by senior supply chain executives around the world.Become a sponsor. Elise Campbell is a multimedia artist based in Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia. Working primarily with wool, silk, and other natural fibres, she creates sculptural pieces that push traditional craft boundaries and the limits of wool as a medium by exploring human-nature relationships through textural forms, histories, and surface design. Utilising both contemporary techniques such as needle felting and nuno felting alongside the traditional craft of wet felting, she creates work that reflects narratives of ecological movement, weaving in themes of environmental stewardship. Inspired by both found specimens and botanical watercolour illustrations, Elise's body of work is growing from fungi and algae/kelp to include historical and currently relevant ecology specimens. Elise's dedication to elevating wool fibre to fine craft is evident in her commitment to innovation and collaboration. Her work has garnered recognition and support from prestigious institutions such as the Canada Council for the Arts, The Robert Pope Foundation, and the Denis Diderot Grant, and has been showcased in galleries across Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Ontario. Through her creative endeavours, residencies, and an international felting study, Elise strives to both inspire and embrace innovation and collaboration, fostering a collective responsibility to protect and cherish our natural home, Earth. We talked about our first time meeting through an art jury, her love of felting and why she only recently started identifying as an artist. We also talk about a very raw and beautiful documentary that she starred in called Hold Fast | A Tattoo That Fits and Flows. In this award winning short film by tattoo artist, Chad Harrington Elise generously shares the journey to getting her first tattoo.

Imagine there are two computers. One computer is a standalone connected to nothing but the electrical supply. The second one is connected to a network of computers. Which of the two is likely to be more useful to you? A similar concept applies to learning. People with a greater database are almost always seen as “more talented”. A database is something we can control, and learning how to use it makes us more “talented”. Here's where you start on the journey.

New Talk Art special episode!!!! We meet leading artist Alvaro Barrington, presented by BMW.We explore his work since we last met him on the podcast a few years ago, his current, epic solo 'Grace' at Tate Britain's Duveen Galleries, as well as a very cool recent collaboration with BMW at Frieze Seoul. Inspired by the BMW Art Car Collection and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artist has paint over seven miniature i7s, drawing inspiration from video games and music.Barrington's practice explores interconnected histories of cultural production. Considering himself primarily a painter, Barrington's multimedia approach to image-making employs burlap, textiles, postcards and clothing, exploring how materials themselves can function as visual tools while referencing their personal, political and commercial histories. Barrington is interested in how the vehicles of the future will have the potential to recognise our moods, emotions and schedules, and as such adapt to them accordingly. The artist explores the future of cars reimagined as self-driving entertainment units and places for meeting that can help bridge different cultures through new technologies such as instant language translation. Utilising artificial intelligence, cars will go far beyond their purely transporting function and instead help us foster new connections and fulfil our daily needs. For this project, Barrington looked into video games centered around cars, which were not only important as play and entertainment, but also as platforms for music and culture. Exploring the history of cars and other vehicles that enable travel and movement, the artist has focused on the intersection of cars and culture and the way they have influenced one another. Merging these references, the artist created 7 unique cars, each featuring a drawing from a film, music video or portraying a cultural figure, which remain influential in Barrington's life and practice. For his Tate Britain commission, Barrington's personal exploration of identity and belonging is a journey in three parts honouring his grandmother, sister and mother. He draws from personal memories across time and place, from his grandmother's Caribbean home where a thunderstorm hammers on the corrugated tin roof, to the exhilarating energy of Carnival. Tate Britain's Duveen Galleries are transformed into a space alive with sound, colour and texture. This is Barrington's poignant celebration of the people and places that make us feel we belong.'GRACE is the constant reimagining of Black culture and aspirational attitude under foreign conditions. GRACE here explores how my grandmother, my mother, and my sister in the British Caribbean community showed up gracefully.' - Alvaro BarringtonGrace runs until 26 January 2025 at @Tate Britain, free entry.
