Episodes of Alive Again are available now. Search for Alive Again and listen now. ---- Before the fall, he was chasing a dream. After the fall, he found his sound. Musician Blair Crimmins was spiraling—caught between fading dreams, destructive habits, and an unshakable feeling that something needed to change. Then one night, after a day of drinking and being dragged behind his dog on a skateboard, he cracked his skull on the pavement outside his apartment in Atlanta. He nearly died. He lost his sense of smell. He lost himself. But that accident became a turning point. In this episode, Blair shares the long and uncertain road to healing—physically, emotionally, and creatively. From vestibular therapy to olfactory training, from depression to the rediscovery of music through piano, banjo, and ukulele, Blair found his way not back, but forward. He left behind the rockstar dream and built something entirely new: a vibrant, genre-defying sound that would become Blair Crimmins and the Hookers. This is a story about injury, isolation, and rebuilding—not just a career, but an identity. It’s about how the worst night of your life might just be the one that wakes you up. Links: Mandarin Blueprint: https://www.mandarinblueprint.com/ My blog: imlearningmandarin.com -- On today's episode, I interview Phil Crimmins. Phil is one of the two minds behind Mandarin Blueprint, a Mandarin learning course with over 4000 videos taking learners step-by-step all the way to Mandarin proficiency. Phil's journey with Mandarin is fascinating. He graduated from Sichuan University in China with a bachelor's degree in the Chinese language. But he left unsatisfied with the traditional methods of learning Chinese he'd been exposed to. So together with his business partner Luke, they created Mandarin Blueprint. Before exploring how the blueprint works and the thinking that went behind it, I was keen to find out more about Phil's personal experiences of learning Mandarin.

Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textWhat if the bustling corridors of a prestigious opera house concealed a dark secret? This episode unravels the haunting mystery of Helen Minkus, a brilliant violinist whose life was tragically cut short at the Metropolitan Opera House. We chronicle Helen's extraordinary rise from a humble farm in British Columbia to her celebrated performances at Juilliard and the Met. The story takes a harrowing turn on July 23rd, 1980, during a Berlin Ballet intermission, when Helen inexplicably vanished, only to be discovered dead and nude in a ventilation shaft the next day. Amidst thousands of unsuspecting spectators, her absence went unnoticed, painting a chilling picture of her untimely and enigmatic demise.Join us as we dissect the relentless investigation that ensued, focusing on the meticulous police work that led to over 800 interviews and zeroed in on 21-year-old stagehand Craig Crimmins. We explore how his intimate knowledge of the opera house and missed performance cue raised alarms, ultimately linking him to the crime through specific knots and a telltale handprint. The narrative reaches a spine-tingling climax when Crimmins, drunk and spurned, confesses to the horrific act, offering a disturbing glimpse into his disturbed psyche. Musikfest 2024! Our fav 10 days of the year are back and we return to providing daily guidance on what bands to see each day along with bringing on a guest or two. Thank you so much to Godfrey Daniels for letting us set-up for these special 10 days to use as homebase for these livestreams. In this episode, a bunch of Hoookers stop by! Since 2000, the United States Global Change Research Program has periodically published a report on its assessment of the climate crisis, its current impacts, its potential threats, and the solutions available to mitigate the worst impacts and adapt as quickly as possible. Last week, the interagency program published the Fifth National Climate Assessment. Despite accounting for just 4% of the world's population, as a result of burning fossil fuels for more than a century, the US is responsible for approximately 17% of the global warming the planet is facing today. And while US emissions are falling, they're not falling fast enough to meet the 2050 Net Zero target established by the Biden Administration. The report explores the health, economic, environmental, and social impacts of the climate crisis that Americans are experiencing now and it clearly states that all of those will get worse if America and the world doesn't start cutting greenhouse gas emissions immediately. Allison Crimmins, the Director of the Fifth National Climate Assessment, joins the show to discuss the report's main findings, the extraordinary costs of the climate crisis that Americans are already facing, and the positive benefits that could be achieved today as soon as we start deploying sufficient mitigation and adaptation strategies.
