Arian is solo this episode, but it's a long one. Hold onto your butts and see what you think. Could this be a false confession? Could a child abuser still be free? Or are they already behind bars? This episode features the case of a mom of 4, pregnant with the 5th, convicted of murdering her best friends baby. She claims her confession was not true and she only said what she said because she thought it's what the police wanted to hear. The day after Thanksgiving 2009 was the last day a 25 year old man was seen alive. His family said that he was acting strange. Even after a doctor visit, he did not get better before he ran out of his family home. Not only did he just run away, but he ran out in the middle of a snowstorm. No keys. No shoes. No coat? Nothing to help him with the cold. I could hardly do that on a dare before turning tail and running back inside. Not Larry. He vanished. His father said it was like the earth had swallowed him whole. As a parent, I cannot imagine this feeling. Knowing that he had to still be somewhere, but not having any idea where to look. It wasn't until 2019 that we find out what actually happened to Larry. This episode goes over his discovery and what is believed to have happened. I Engrave Stuff is our sponsor this week. Check out there awesome website and get your hands on one of their cute pieces. Alaska has way more missing persons than any of the lower 48 United States. Alaska is a huge state that is largely wild. The wild attracts those who want to adventure or even just be left alone. How many serial killers do you think there are in the world that we still don't know about? Well there is (or was) possibly one near Aiken, South Carolina in the late 80's and early 90's. Depending on what you would consider his "MO", there could be three, four, five... who knows how many victims. And when you look at all the possible murders that could be connected in the area, how many people fall into the criteria of "possible suspect". It will be interesting to know "who done it" when these stories are finally solved. But, for now - here are the stories of 4 Aiken County murders and a few possible suspects. February 9th is a pretty significant day for two separate families for the same reason. 2006 a 29 year old mom was found murdered. Then 2008 a 57 year old mom was found murdered in nearly the exact same way. Still unsolved to this day… but what do police know now, that will break this wide open? Sonia Mejia was 29 in 2006 and had taken her 8 year old son to school. She was a small lady, only 5’ 3” and 125 lbs. She was also six months pregnant. Someone had seen a latino man holding a bottle of Coke and a bag of chips leaning against Mejia’s door and talking to her. The same witness told police the man then HIT her on the side of the head, pushed her into the apartment and kicked the door shut. What????Mejia’s common law husband came home around 6pm to find her dead in the bedroom. He found her partially nude on the bed with a dark blue bandana around her mouth and a WIRE around her neck; there was an orange substance consistent with the color of Cheetos on her right breast. Mejia’s husband later found a bag of Cheetos and a Coke bottle inside the front doorway. Husband said the bandana and wire did not belong to him. 4 things were believed to be stolen; heart shaped Ruby ring, Diamond ring, medallion of Our Lady of Guadalupe on a gold necklace, and her Gray 1998 Ford Escort keys. Her car was found 5 days later, 12 blocks away in a motel parking lot.Damiana Castillo was 57 in 2008. There are different reports. One says that Castillo’s son had gone to check on her after she didn’t show up for church, the other says he was going to pick her up for work. So maybe it could be both? Either way she was found by her son. No one answered the door so he found the extra key and let himself in. He said the apartment was a mess and she was laying on the ground, partially covered by a pillow. Records state that their death’s were similar so even though it doesn’t go into detail about Castillo’s complete state at the time of her death, I can imagine it probably had to do with the same elements as Mejia’s death. On February 9, 2006 Sonia Mejia was found sexually assaulted and strangled to death in Taylorsville, Utah. On February 9, 2008 Damiana Castillo was found strangled in West Valley City, Utah. Even though it happened in different cities, these only happened 1 mile apart. The same DNA was found in each crime scene. The DNA was not in the system at the time. In 2009 a task force was created and it was found that these two were linked and they were likely dealing with a serial killer. The Anniversary of the slayings prompted extra patrol officers in the area to prevent a 3rd slaying. Recently in November 2018 an article was released stating that they know who the killer is. They do not want to release his name in case he becomes a flight risk and tries to flee. He is currently serving time in another state and does not know that he is being charged in Utah. His current release date is unknown, or at least that is what they have told reporters so we can’t figure out who it is. Charges were filed 1 day before the statute of limitations was reached in 2010 with two counts aggravated burglary and a count of aggravated sexual assault for the two women. They were charged to John Doe but they wanted to make sure they could put a name to those charges eventually. They will submit an amendment to the charges to replace “John Doe” with his name as a way to get around the statute of limitations. Support the show (http://patreon.com/letstakealook)
A summer morning in a small Alabama town was the last place a 12 year old girl was seen in 1984. Did Sherry ever get the soda that she intended to buy with the dollar her step-father had just given her while he ran in the bank. He asked her to be back in 15 minutes, but how many minutes did it take for their world to be turned upside down? She also adored her step-father. When he was leaving to go into town to go to the bank, she came running outside with her shoes in hand begging to go with. Raymond (her step father) went into the bank to sign papers, he gave her $1 to go get a soda. One article said it was from a vending machine, another said it was from a Chevron gas station. Raymond told her to meet him back at the truck in 15 minutes. She was last seen crossing the street towards the Chevron gas station at 9:30 am. She didn’t come back after 15 minutes and Raymond began to get frustrated. It was not like Sherry to be late or disobey. After another 10 minutes he called Betty at her job at the local Waffle House to see if she happened to have gone over there to say hi. Betty said that Sherry was not there. Raymond then called the cops and that began the nightmare her poor mother has endured her entire life since then. 12 years after a set of remains were found off a frontage road in Utah, DNA comparisons to a family member of a missing woman confirmed their suspicions of the identity of the remains. But, how she got there and who put her there remains unanswered. This case originally was an unidentified found remains case known as “Saltair Sally”1.5 miles east of a local concert hall named “The Great Saltair”. Duck hunters found “badly decomposed remains. A skull with rotting teeth and waist length hair, 26 bones, a purple beaded necklace ,and an oversized T-shirt in the mud off of an I-80 frontage road in a field. Based on the location of the body, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said it was likely a homicide. Running theory is that she was killed along I-80 and or her body was dumped there. Having traveled on I-80 I can say that this is very very likely. I don’t know how much I want to get in to, just incase family may listen, but my husband and I have taken advantage of how much… privacy you can find on that long boring highway through the salt flats. In October 2012, “Saltair Sally” was given a name. Through DNA comparisons to a family member, it was found to be Nikole Bakoles. Only 20 years old and a mother of a young daughter at the time of her disappearance and death. An unknown person then crept onto the Investor in the darkness and executed every person on board with what police believe was a .22 caliber pistol or rifle. It was near the final days of the commercial fishing season for that year. Mark was said to be ambitious, hard-working and well liked Skipper. “Everyone of his crew wanted to be like Mark, he was one of the best skippers around.” Said one of the deckhands brothers. It was also said that he was a “rising star”. “He could be really tough, really aggressive.” But as any growing business owner knows… you kind of have to be. Mark had just become the proud owner of one of the most expensive ($850,000), high-tech commercial fishing boats of it’s kind in the region at that time. In 1986, John David Morris left several of his possessions with his friend, Newel Sessions. Of those possessions was a WWI/WWII era footlocker. Newel stored this footlocker for six years in his shed before he decided to open it. Inside that footlocker were a set of bones that would end up being given a name. The details of this story are suspicious from beginning to end. Does the family truly know what happened? Or are the authorities correct in leaving this case unsolved?
