Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide, mental health crises, and a recent shooting. In this profoundly important episode, Bethany Lewis speaks with Laura Dyer about the tragic loss of her brother, Greg, due to CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Laura, a registered nurse and healthcare leader,  shares their family's difficult journey, from Greg's successful football career at the University of Utah to the onset of debilitating symptoms like paranoia, aggression, and psychosis that were misdiagnosed for years as mental illness. They delve into what CTE is, how it differs from a single concussion, and why it can only be diagnosed posthumously. Laura provides crucial insights from the forefront of CTE research, including the critical role of sub-concussive hits, the stages of the disease, and the ongoing work of the Concussion Legacy Foundation. This conversation is a powerful call for awareness, compassion, and change. While the topic is heavy, Laura emphasizes hope—hope for future diagnostics, hope for better player safety, and hope for individuals and families navigating similar challenges today. If you or a loved one has a history of contact sports or repetitive head trauma, this episode is an essential listen.SummaryThis episode provides a comprehensive and heartfelt exploration of CTE through the personal story of Laura Dyer and her brother, Greg. Key points discussed include:What is CTE? CTE is a degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive head trauma, including both concussions and, crucially, hundreds or thousands of sub-concussive impacts over years.Greg's Story: A talented football player, Greg began experiencing unexplained symptoms in his twenties, including hearing voices, extreme paranoia, impulsivity, and aggression. He was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, as his football history was never considered a factor by treating physicians. The Diagnosis: CTE can currently only be diagnosed after death by examining brain tissue. Laura details the process of donating her brother's brain to Boston University for research and the relief and validation the subsequent diagnosis brought the family.Symptoms and Stages: CTE manifests differently; in younger individuals (20s-30s), it often appears as mental/behavioral issues (anxiety, depression, impulsivity), while in older individuals (50s+), it can resemble dementia. Greg was diagnosed with Stage 2 CTE.A Message of Hope and Action: Laura stresses that a CTE diagnosis is not a death sentence and that many people live full lives while managing symptoms. She urges anyone concerned—whether athletes or family members—to seek support, use available resources like the Concussion Legacy Foundation, and believe loved ones when they share what they are experiencing.Advice for Parents and Athletes: The key takeaway is to be aware of the risks of repetitive head trauma in contact sports, take head injuries seriously, and prioritize brain health. While football may not disappear, awareness and safety protocols are improving.Resources Mentioned:Concussion Legacy Foundation: https://www.concussionfoundation.org/ (Includes a helpline and resources for support)Boston University UNITE Brain Bank / CTE Center: https://www.bu.edu/cte/Podcast Episode with Dr. Diane Spangler on Mental Health & Concussion: Watch on YouTubeBethany's Free Guide: "The 5 Best Ways to Support Your Loved One Dealing with a Concussion" - Available at www.theconcussioncoach.comThe episode concludes with Laura's hope that Greg's legacy will be one of raising awareness and improving the lives of future athletes, emphasizing that support and resources are available for those who need them.

This summer we are collaborating with Dr. Xiumei Pu in her Project, "Mountains and Stories: Building Community Among Asian and Pacific Islander Refugee and Immigrant Families in Salt Lake Valley," with the support of a Whiting Public Engagement Programs Seed Grant (https://www.whiting.org/scholars/public-engagement-programs/about). Anchored in the theme of mountains, the project consists of a twelve-part podcast and a documentary, a storytelling-conversation cultural event (June 26, 2021), and a group hike in the Wasatch Mountains (October 23, 2021). It is our hope that these efforts will amplify the environmental voices of Asian and Pacific Islander refugee and immigrant communities, and spark more public interest in thinking about the connection between culture, identity, and the natural environment. You can listen to previous episodes here (https://podcast.mountainresearch.org/) on the IMR Podcast website. At the heart of the project is a podcast series featuring the life and work of twelve storytellers who come from a range of age groups, occupations, and ethnic and racial backgrounds. Some of them are born in the United States; many of them are born in another Asian country or Pacific Island and immigrated to the US at a young age. Their stories show fascinating complexities of immigration routes and histories, incredible cultural richness and resilience, and long-lasting contributions of the Asian and Asian Pacific Islander communities to the social life and cultural landscapes of Salt Lake Valley and the broader Utah. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1fa521c0-f451-41ad-b95a-11b649737210/OTyc50-U.jpeg Kripa Thapa recently graduated from the Master's program in geography and Geographic Information Science master's student from the University of Utah (UofU). Over the two-year run, she worked under the supervision of Dr. Summer Rupper. During my first year, she was recognized as a Graduate Fellow under the Global Change and Sustainability Center (GCSC) at the UofU. In her second year, I was engaged as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for Geography Department. Currently, she is working as a Research Assistant (RA) at the Snow and Ice Lab, UofU. Besides these engagements over the past two years, she conducted my research titled "Assessment of mountain water supply and storage at sub-basin scale in Nepal". The study aims to elucidate the primary drivers of water vulnerability in the mountain ecosystems of Nepal and provide a framework to help combat potential water scarcity that will be of interest to policymakers and researchers in the long run. In August, Kripa will be pursuing an internship – with the Software Products Team at ESRI, one of the world's leading GIS software companies Jeff Nichols and Brent Olson co-direct the Institute for Mountain Research (http://mountainresearch.org) and our 2018-2019 Mountain Fellows are Katie Saad and Naomi Shapiro. Our theme song is “Home” by Pixie and the Partygrass Boys. (https://www.pixieandthepartygrassboys.com). As Naomi likes to say, “They are awesome and you should check them out.” The Institute for Mountain Research is located on the ancestral and traditional lands of the Ute, Goshute, and Shoshone Peoples. Amy Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today we're going to discuss an essential text from the middle of the 19th Century, the transcript of a speech delivered at a Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio in 1851. The speech is entitled “Ain't I A Woman,” and it was delivered by the great Abolitionist and Women's Rights activist, Sojourner Truth. But before we dive into the speech, I'd like to introduce my reading partner for this episode, Rayna Clay MacKay. Hi, Rayna! Rayna Hi, Amy!  Amy Rayna is a wife, mom, and Obstetric Anesthesiologist. She married a dreamy Scotsman for much more than his accent and gained two fantastic bonus kids as a result. They added three more kiddos to the mix, including identical twin boys, and A daughter. They also have the best Cavoodle in the world named Hamish!   She's a traveler by nature and has lived in over a dozen cities (thanks to medical training) across the United States. She moved from Massachusetts to Tampa Bay almost three years ago and loves the indoor-outdoor lifestyle of Florida. It's also the midway point between the California family and her husband's family in the UK. She grew up in California and Utah, which shaped her outlook on life in general. As the daughter of a single AA mother in UT, she constantly felt a sense of being other. This permeated her HS, college, and medical school (UofU) experience. While she cherishes the relationships she developed in Utah, the culture didn't mesh, and she finds that the California culture of acceptance (of all genders, religions, people, sexuality, etc.) was more aligned with her values.   Speaking of values, she values her family above all, but also loves pretty things! That includes her obsession with home renovation and decor, kids' birthday parties, and cooking beautiful, delicious food. They try to indulge their love of travel to pretty places as often as possible. She thinks this hails back to her taking a certain scripture to heart as a kiddo, "if there is anything [lovely], of good report, or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."   Her other core value is justice and equality. She is a firm believer that differences are what make us great, and they should be applauded and supported. As she's gotten older and wiser, She's found her voice becoming louder championing for the injustices in the medical system, and society as a whole. Her hope is that the future is more glorious with a rainbow of differing people and opinions that are equally acknowledged.   On any given day (outside of the hospital) you will find her hanging with the family, playing the NYT crossword or flipping through HGTV magazine while watching a British crime drama or The Crown. Can you talk a little about that? Rayna Amy Thank you so much for being here, Rayna! So before we dig into this text, let's set the stage by talking a bit about Sojourner Truth, and the context in which she lived. Rayna, maybe you can take the first half of her story and I'll take the second half. Biography of Sojourner Truth  Rayna Isabella Baumfree, known as “Belle,” was one of the 10 or 12 children born to James and Elizabeth Baumfree. A man named Charles Hardenbergh bought James and Elizabeth Baumfree from slave traders and kept their family at his estate in a big hilly area called by the Dutch name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swartekill,_New_York (Swartekill), in the town of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esopus,_New_York (Esopus, New York), 95 miles north of New York City. Charles Hardenbergh inherited his father's estate and continued to enslave people as a part of that estate's property.   When Charles Hardenbergh died in 1806,...
