This week, Emily and V look at the brilliant life and tragic death of the Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was murdered by the president of her national fan club. While Selena's life was cut way too short, the amount of genius and joy that she exuded onstage and offstage is the most important part of her story. Emily skillfully guides us through Selena's life, her music, and her fashion, and V is along for the very sad ride. We also reference other stars who were killed by people claiming to be their fans, such as John Lennon, Rebecca Schaeffer, and Christina Grimmie, so please only listen to this episode if you are in the right mindset to be sad. Yolanda Saldívar, who shot and fatally wounded Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez almost 30 years ago, has been denied parole. In other news, Frisco police say they are investigating after a bullet struck a school Thursday morning, though they don't believe the campus was targeted. An officer responded to “a suspicious circumstance” at Hosp Elementary just before 9:30 a.m. It said the officer found a shattered classroom window and subsequently what was believed to be bullet fragments; insurance giant Geico announced plans to add 1,000 jobs and a new 165,000-square-foot building in Richardson; and the Allen City Council on Tuesday approved $5.5 million in downtown improvement funds to buy and clean up a 7-acre parcel along U.S. Highway 75, just north of Main Street. No specific projects have been proposed but “commercial is the only kind of use” the city would consider. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Farmworkers and their supporters held events across California today. They used Cesar Chavez day, the state holiday commemorating the late labor leader to bring attention to a bill they say would help them unionize. And it has been 27 years to the day since the death of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, “The Queen of Tejano.” The pop star's life and music continue to have n impact on conversations around Mexican-American identity. Plus, the Russian invasion of Ukriane is causing food prices around the world to rise. The repercussions of this could lead to a humanitarian crisis among the world poor. Next, the city of San Diego has a massive backlog of broken streetlights. Why does it take an average of just under a year to fix each one? Then, environmentalist Bill Mckibben, founder of 350.org, says renewable energy is getting cheaper and easier to generate. And it is ready to replace fossil fuels in our warming world. This week on Hashtag History, we are discussing Selena Quintanilla Perez, an American singer, businesswoman, and fashion designer that would be credited as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time at a time when the Tejano music industry was largely dominated by male artists. She would break through this glass ceiling and become by far one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers to ever exist. Tragically, on March 31, 1995, when Selena was only twenty-three years old, she would be shot and murdered by a friend of hers' that had managed her fan club. Following her tragic death, her English crossover record, titled Dreaming of You, would reach the top of the Billboard 200, the first Latin artist to ever do so. Since then, nearly 18 million Selena records have been sold and several movies and shows have been made to document Selena's life, namely the 1997 film that starred Jennifer Lopez as Selena Quintanilla that would propel Lopez, also a Latin American artist, into the spotlight in a major way. Selena Quintanilla-Perez first stepped into the Tejano music scene in South Texas in the early 1980s. A Mexican-American from Texas whose first language was English, Selena's dedication, hard work, and incredible family bond helped her breakthrough national, cultural, and language barriers in a music genre that was previously always dominated by men. She was the total package: stunningly beautiful, with a powerful singing voice, incredible dance moves, and a sense of humor that disarmed everyone. She was proving herself to be a capable businesswoman and entrepreneur making a name for herself in the fashion industry. And she did all of it before she was senselessly gunned down only two weeks before her 24th birthday. Join us as we discuss the music, fashion, and cultural icon that was Selena in this special two-part series.Sources:Colloff, P. (2010, April). Dreaming of Her. Selena Quintanilla Perez was at the peak of her career when her friend and business partner shot and killed her. Selena was able to accomplish so much in her short time on this Earth but her legacy lives on. She is just as famous now as she was when she was alive. She has influenced people like Beyoncé, J-Lo, Keke Palmer, etc. and she continues to be influential to so many to this day. This case is a personal one to me, I grew up listening to Selena and watching her performances on TV and her murder was my first introduction to murder and understanding why people kill other people. If you do not know who she is, I recommend seeing some videos of her on YouTube and listen to a few of her songs to see what she was like for yourself. I also give a personal opinion at the end.... Abraham please do not sue me!!!! Join Lisa O'Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for State of Texas v. Yolanda Saldivar. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a vibrant and exceptionally talented performer and fashion designer, whose life was cut short by Saldivar on March 31, 1995. Saldivar was suspected of embezzling money from both Selena's fan club and Selena's businesses in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas. At some point, either after she was confronted about missing funds, or as a means of covering her scheme, Saldivar removed business records and resisted returning the records, which were necessary to prepare the business' tax returns. We'll pay tribute to Selena's life and legacy, including dispelling some of the myths about Selena's career, her family and her marriage. Finally, we'll talk about the evidence against Saldivar, her trial, direct appeal and unsuccessful state and federal post-conviction claims.
This week, we bring you two cases looking at women who assassinated (or attempted to assassinate) celebrities. Rachel starts off with the story of Sara Jane Moore. Sara looked like a typical American housewife, in reality she was anything but. Sara planned to assassinate President Gerald Ford as he exited his hotel in San Francisco, California. Luckily she was using a faulty gun and missed the president. She was tackled to the ground by a passerby and swiftly arrested. While in prison, Sara made an attempt to escape but was eventually caught by the police and returned to a high security institution. In spite of all of this, Sara was released from prison in 2007. Nathalie then tells the story of Yolanda Saldivar, former Selena fan club president turned killer. After attending on of Selena Quintanilla-Perez's concerts, Yolanda became obsessed with the singer. She contacted Selena's father about starting a fan club in San Antonio. The club quickly grew and Selena allowed Yolanda to help manage her clothing boutiques, Selena Etc. Selena's family discovered Yolanda was embezzling money from the fan clubs and the boutiques. They swiftly fired her and requested that she turn over the financial records. Yolanda waited until she had Selena alone in a hotel room and shot her, she would later die in the hospital from blood loss. On March 31, 1995, Mexican-American Tejano singer Selena, was shot and killed at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was 23 years old. The murderer was her "friend" and President of the Selena Fan Club, Yolanda Saldivar. Selena died due to massive blood loss from her injuries. Saldivar was sentenced to Life in prison with possibility of parole after 30 years. She's eligible for parole on March 30, 2025......... But FUCK Yolanda Saldivar.
Ed Sheeran went on Instagram to post a childhood photo of himself in a Ipswich Town FC jersey to announce that he has been signed on as next season's shirt sponsor. The design that is going to be featured on the jersey's that they play at home games has a bunch of math symbols on it which sound about right since Ed Sheeran likes to name his albums things like “divide” “x” and “+” BUT there the design includes a minus and an equal symbol. A lot of fans believe that this could be the sign of one or even two new albums from the star? The design also says the word Tour which just adds to the confusion. Harry Styles wrapped up the filming of the movie Don't Worry Darling with Florence Pugh and directed by Olivia Wilde and now he is working on “My Policeman”. The story is about how Harry's character starts a love affair with another man which they have to hide since it takes place in the 50s when being gay was illegal. Megan Thee Stallion is getting her own reality series on Snapchat. The show is going to be called “Off The Leash” with Megan Thee Stallion and its going to feature her hanging out with celebrity friends and their pets and the show is going to be produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Season 2 of the show Selena: The Series has come out on Netflix which is all about the life of Selena Quintanilla- Perez and her rise to fame. In season 6 of the new season there is a scene where a young Beyonce with her mom and sister see Selena at the mall and get star struck - since the show is based on a true story a lot of fans wanted to know if this is something that actually happened or just put in the show as a storyline. Well it turns out this did in fact take place. Beyonce has talked before about the incident saying that she got tongue tied when she saw Selena and just gave her a quick hello. SAN ANTONIO - “Hush, dad. I'm talking.” Selena to Abraham. On the bus. In Austin. She was in control. Says Joe Nick Patoski, the man who wrote the book “Selena: Como La Flor.” At the time, Patoski was writing a story on Selena's burgeoning stardom for Texas Monthly. And the book… that wasn't even on the radar; that only came after her death. Patoski spoke to News 4, along with many others close to Selena Quintanilla-Perez, in reflection of her passing. [Editor's note: Patoski spoke to us just before the pandemic.] In this interview, Patoski reflects on Selena's rise in the music industry, but also explains her other dream and all that was lost in March 1995. He also describes how Yolanda Saldivar, still imprisoned for Selena's murder, befriended the Tejano singer. The aftermath of Selena's death revealed a lot about Texas, says Patoski. Those who didn't know her. And those completely devastated by her sudden passing. Patoski has written about Texans for decades. He's also written books on Steve Ray Vaughan and Willie Nelson. Patoski was a staff writer at Texas Monthly for 18 years and has also written for the Texas Observer, People Magazine, National Geographic and The New York Times.

Corpus Christi based producer Svani Quintanilla (Principe Q) is noted as one of the founders of “Screwmbia”, pioneered by his duo Royal Highness (with DJ King Louie). "Screwmbia" is his modern take on cumbia, blending trap drums with slowed down cumbia rhythms. Bringing cumbia in to the modern times is an homage to his aunt, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, who also did so in the 80's and 90's. He is the oldest son of Kumbia Kings founder A.B. Quintanilla and has recently decided to carry on the cumbia torch with his band TRiPpY CHoLo.
Twenty-five years after her death, Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez enjoys rare staying power among generations of fans who love her music, fashion and performances. A new hit Netflix series about her rise to stardom builds on that legacy. Selena grew up singing Tejano music with her family band, Selena y Los Dinos, and was a platinum-selling artist when she was murdered in 1995 at the age of 23. Today, Selena’s level of fame, influence and commercial success is still rare for other American-born Latinas in music and entertainment to achieve. We discuss why Selena remains so relevant and her evolving role as a Mexican-American icon.

This week we review the Jennifer Lopez star vehicle based on the life of Mexican-American pop icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez. This is a movie that is so prevalent in Latinx culture that it has colored much of how we view the late Tejano singer, and it a great snapshot for first and second generation Americans and how we try to maintain connection with our roots. Along with the review of this film, Angel gives some thoughts on the new Netflix series, and we dip into True Crime land by going over the details of Selena's murder.

Today in music, I'm thinking of Selena Quintanilla. (Singing Song)All the fans still think of you SelenaSelenaWhy did you have to go and leave us like you did?I heard your spirit say that it is not a curseSelenaThe voice of your goodbye is hello in reverse.........I'm thinking of Selena Quintanilla Perez today; raised as a Jehovah's Witness. A songstress that brought us songs like Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, I Could Fall In Love, Dreaming of You, I'm Getting Used to You, Missing My Baby, and more.Selena left us on March 31, 1995. I believe that those that are absent from the body and present with the Lord are not really dead in the fist place according to the things I read from the good book. Spiritual discernment is given, and when you're close to God, you can know that you have a heavenly family.Selena said, " I give thanks to God for having in Christ a companion, a true friend, and a good heart. I'm quite normal. I pay rent and eat. I love kids. I would love to have a family. But .... I have a lot of time for that. That is more .... for the future."And the best is yet to come Selena. Artist, musician, fashion icon, sister, daughter, wife, a human beam of sparkly light. She was a QUEEN in every sense of the word, more than deserving of her title. You guessed it - we’re talking about Selena! Selena Quintanilla-Perez was an insanely talented musician with an out-of-this-world fashion career ahead of her when she passed away at 23 in 1995. But her accomplishments aside (and there are MOUNTAINS of them), she also was a ray of sunshine, filled with so much joy and confidence that it seemed to radiate from her music and connect directly with the hearts of so many women and girls in the 90s and beyond. For the final week of Latinx Heritage Month, my lovely friend Elise and I are chatting about the Queen of Tejano. We discuss her background, her music, her fashion, her legacy - basically, we discuss this beautiful red rose of a human being and everything we love about her for 40 minutes. With wine. And if you dress up as our Queen for Halloween, we want to see a pic! PLEASE VOTE! Rockthevote.org Iamavoter.com
It was Friday, March 31, 1995 and there was an argument at the Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, that was getting heated. Singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez was having an argument with Yolanda Saldivar, who up until recently, was Selena’s fan club president, boutique manager, and most importantly, friend. Now, the details surrounding those final moments in the motel room are unclear. However, what we do know, is that on March 31st 1995, the world would officially lose Selena, the queen of Tejano music.

Sound mix ja edit: Eemeli Siekkinen"Leaving Home" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for State of Texas v. Yolanda Saldivar. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a vibrant and exceptionally talented performer and fashion designer, whose life was cut short by Saldivar on March 31, 1995. Saldivar was suspected of embezzling money from both Selena’s fan club and Selena’s businesses in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas. At some point, either after she was confronted about missing funds, or as a means of covering her scheme, Saldivar removed business records and resisted returning the records, which were necessary to prepare the business’ tax returns. We’ll pay tribute to Selena’s life and legacy, including dispelling some of the myths about Selena’s career, her family and her marriage. Finally, we’ll talk about the evidence against Saldivar, her trial, direct appeal and unsuccessful state and federal post-conviction claims.

Mark Blankenship on Lifetime's wrenching, but imperfect, Surviving R. Kelly: the power of the first four episodes, and the weirdness of the last two; the "tradition" of fetishizing teenage girls in rock music; the voices we heard for the first time, and the ones we still haven't heard; and whose time is up next. Then we move on to a vintage Behind The Music that's both very typical of VH1's legendary pop-gossip video mag, and delightfully off-brand, as it follows narrator Jim Forbes out of the audio bay, on camera, and into prison for a profoundly impatient interview with the murderer of Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Another year, another Valentine's Day sans valentines for the Sweeties! Welp, who the F cares because we made Selena Quintanilla Perez our valentine and watched one of the greatest biopics of all time centered around bangs and a sequined bustier! YASSS, that's right. Selena, from 1997, skyrocketed J. Lo to fame but more importantly brought Selena, the slain Tejano superstar national if not worldwide attention. We were obsessed with this movie as kids, had the soundtrack, sang along in jibberish Spanish..... and not much has changed today! We'll go over each and every song (lucky you), discuss in length Selena's outfits and fashion trends, and induct two new Sweeties into the Sweetie Club 4 Life. BIDI BIDI BOM BOM BITCHES.
