When it comes to our relationship with technology, be like philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and practice mindfulness. We usually think mindfulness means setting boundaries like screen time limits. However, we should think about the goals and values we want from technology, like greater human connection, improving efficiency, or driving knowledge. This introspective thinking enables us to be intentional about how and why we're using technology. Without mindfulness, instead of you driving the tech, the tech may be driving you. Nate Anderson lives by and continues to share Nietzsche's philosophies today. Nate is the Deputy Editor at Ars Technica, where he covers technology law, politics, and culture. He combined his high-tech background with a love of writing to freelance at publications like The Economist and Foreign Policy. Nate is also the author of In Emergency, Break Glass: What Nietzsche Can Teach Us About Joyful Living in a Tech-Saturated World. Satyen and Nate discuss forming positive connections with technology, saying “yes” to life, and what Nietzsche would have to say about tech.--------“Connection to other people is important. We use technology to create that connection. That might mean a Friday night game group over Zoom or Twitch or multiplayer with your friends. As long as you have the goal in mind, that's where it requires your creativity. That's where you're using the tools creatively to produce outcomes that you want in life. The problem with not thinking in a goal-directed way is that technology itself is not completely neutral. Technology has no goals of its own. It was created by people and companies who have plenty of goals and some of those don't necessarily take you to places where you would choose to go. That's why if you don't have a goal-driven approach to technology, you may find technology is actually driving you.” – Nate Anderson--------Time Stamps:*(04:25): Why Nietzsche? Legendary corporate raider and activist Carl Icahn found himself on the wrong side of a familiar battle this week when the short selling investment firm Hindenburg Research took aim at Icahn's publicly traded holding company, alleging in a new report that Icahn Enterprises L.P. (IEP) is overstating the value of its private asset portfolio, and that its publicly traded stock units–85% of which Icahn owns–are “significantly overvalued.”Icahn's fortune fell over 35%, from $18.3 billion on Monday afternoon to $12 billion as of Tuesday's market close. Icahn Enterprises units tumbled 20% on Tuesday, shaving $3 billion in market value off Icahn's fortune. Forbes then trimmed Icahn's estimated net worth by another $3.6 billion, after it was revealed that Icahn had pledged over half of his IEP shares as collateral against unknown personal debts.Hindenburg is a short selling activist hedge fund run by Nate Anderson who is most famous for having released a video of Nikola's electric truck prototype being towed up a hill in order to be pushed down to make a promotional video showing that the technology was fully operational. He claims that Icahn Enterprises has a Ponzi-like economic structure. Nate Anderson - He is a senior editor at Ars Technica, where he covers technology law, politics, and culture. He holds an MA in English literature from the University of North Carolina. He is also author of “In Emergency, Break Glass: What Nietzsche Can Teach Us About Joyful Living in a Tech-Saturated World” – joins Tavis for a conversation about his text.
Friedrich Nietzsche is famous for espousing a philosophy that may be a help in wrestling with existential angst and finding meaning in life.My guest would say that Nietzsche's philosophy may also be useful for figuring out something else: how to have a healthy relationship with modern technology. His name is Nate Anderson and he's the author of In Emergency, Break Glass: What Nietzsche Can Teach Us About Joyful Living in a Tech-Saturated World. Today on the show, Nate, who's a deputy editor at the website Ars Technica, shares how someone who grew up loving technology and has spent his career writing about it, reached a point where he felt disenchanted with its effects on his life, and why he turned to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche for insights on how to approach tech more fruitfully. We then turn to the way tech has made life too safe, easy, and frictionless, and how Nietzschean goals, asceticism, and creative, self-overcoming exertion can help us find deeper fulfillment. Nate unpacks four Nietzsche-inspired guidelines for information consumption, the importance of the physical body in thinking and feeling, and our need to embrace greater Dionysian energy and perhaps live a bit more dangerously. NOTE: After this episode I will be taking a brief hiatus from this podcast to focus on other areas of my life. I plan on being back in late spring or early summer though! This episode is with my friend Nate Anderson. I've known Nate for about a decade. As a huge supporter of the local twin cities music scene and a musician/creative himself, Nate has always been someone who's been really supportive over the years and incredibly smart dude who I wanted to talk to and get to know a little more on this podcast. In this episode we discuss a wide array of topics. We discuss how we know each other, the local twin cities hip-hop scene, his experience in a punk band, his experience as a therapist, his experience with doing podcasts, our own struggles with mental health, pandemic setbacks, struggling with work/life/creativity balance, his love for vinyl, and his ideas for a future podcast.
While COVID didn't discriminate when it came to putting a halt on the music industry, it is fair to say that some bands were hit harder than others.Established bands with a pre-existing fan base had that foundation to lean on when attempting to keep their spirits up and connect with their fan base, but it is the smaller, up and comers that still relied on playing live to introduce their music to the world that were perhaps harder impacted. One of those bands is Brisbane five piece metal outfit We The Hollow whose emergence on the local scene drove them into a head on collision with the virus that was to sweep the world, temporarily halting their momentum and, in a sense, forcing them back to the drawing board. Now, with restrictions lifting and live music making a resurgence, We The Hollow are putting into effect their efforts over the last two years by getting in the studio and recording a batch of new songs that will eventually manifest into an EP or album.Guitarists Scotty McBain and Cody Shaw and bass player Nate Anderson joined HEAVY to chat about the band and how they plan to kick start the band into 2022.“We The Hollow was formed roughly four years ago,” Scotty began by way of introduction, “just as an idea to get out and start playing and get off my chest what I wanted to play musically."While loosely fitting in to the Nu Metal realm, Scotty insists We The Hollow are much more than a single genre pony."We haven't really thought about what kind of genre we're going for,” he measured. “We do kind of fit in the Nu Metal side of things, but we have a bit of death metal influences and a bit of thrash too We get some more modern influences going as well to keep things interesting.”In the full interview the boys talk more about the bands music and what song best introduces their sound, wearing masks and the personal meaning behind them, new music and when it will likely be released, future shows including one this Friday night at Mo's Desert Clubhouse and more.

Nate is a guy who competes a lot so it was interesting to hear his experiences of trying to accomplish something bigger by taking some risks in life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todd-atkins8/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/todd-atkins8/support

6 episodes in and we're growing each week! Thank you to the listeners. On this week's episode of The Polaroid Podcast, I sit down with Nate Anderson. Anderson and I met in the fall of 2018 at Howard and even lived in the same building, Drew Hall. It was there that him and his partner, Chris Coates, traded verses and hooks nightly. Their group, 375, makes music that is melodic, soulful, and clearly a testament to their talent. Nate and I speak about what it was like to attend Sierra Canyon, being immortalized, his appearance on Late Night with James Corden, and I tell him the story of my first pick-up game at Howard. Despite having gotten a taste of the limelight through the success of his father, Nate is his own man, with his own successes. Though his focus is music at the moment, I would not be surprised to see him back on the screen soon, due to his acting ability. He is also incredibly humble, reminiscing on watching his father establish himself, while also being grateful for all of his opportunities. An all-around artist with something to prove, be on the lookout for Nato in the coming years. This week we will be covering the case of Nate Anderson from Smith County, Texas. Nate was just 15 years old when he murdered his sister Amanda in cold blood on September 15, 2010 inside their family home. While initially Nate claimed an intruder had broken in and killed his sister while he was out on an evening jog, it did not take long for the Smith County detectives to zero in on Nate as their prime suspect. But, the lingering question that remains still to this day ten years later is why?? Why did Nate kill his beloved sister that evening? Tune in and listen as we unravel this case and go inside the evidence and trial, or lack thereof, for Nate, and how Nate will only serve a short 10 years sentence before he is eligible to be released. That's right! He will be eligible to be a free man in as short as two years from now.
Nate helps us understand the importance of building a school wide system for behavior (PBIS).

It's really our first official offseason pod, which means you get a closer look into the minds of the entire staff. We're not sure anybody needs that, so apologies ahead of time. We talk about the cancellation of the OU Caravan stops and what that means for fan outreach from the University of Oklahoma. And how are relations between fans and the program these days? Is the new softball complex and it's non-starter as a project indicative of how tough the climate is to raise money for OU right now? We also hit the recruiting trail with Josh who has been to the Frisco/Little Elm area in North Texas the last week seeing newest commitments. Nate Anderson and Ryan Watts. The full rundown is below: OPEN - Thanks for the kind and crazy Ratings and Reviews lately. Eddie's Cubs kick out a guy for playing the circle game? 0:04:00 - The Kevin Durant injury heard around Oklahoma 0:09:00 - Uncomfortable body hair talk and Josh's story about meeting his wife 0:14:45 - No more Tulsa Caravan. What's up with that? 0:20:55 - Fan attendance is becoming an issue. How is OU's outreach working after this stuff? 0:26:24 - How does James Gallogly and what's going on with him and finances play a part in all of this? And with the new softball stadium? 0:33:25 - Eddie gets philosophical on us about how people are consuming things 0:40:50 - How the loss of Fox Sports channels could affect watching football in the future 0:53:12 - Josh headed out on the recruiting trail to speak with Nate Anderson. And how Bob is a jerk to us. 1:03:04 - Josh's trip to see Ryan Watts 1:06:24 - Carey wants his chair back from Eddie after Josh's Watts' story. Eddie's NFL allegiance is discussed. 1:11:10 - Running back recruiting discussion with Josh 1:21:30 - Ratings and Reviews, thank you listeners! 1:27:43 - Eddie gets busted for his lack of pronunciation skills. This time it's one of his boss' names. 1:29:30 - The staff member that always screws up our social media account 1:32:33 - Carey knows more about how many concerts Eddie has been to than he has 1:35:00 - Chris Steele is in the transfer portal, but so is a Clemson running back. Could OU be interested in one or both?
As the gaming industry moves towards devoting more resources to "Games as a Service" and "live game" products, there are great discussions to be had around how to preserve these naturally temporary experiences. When Youtuber Accursed Farms put out a video claiming that, by their very nature, service-based games were fraudulent as part of that discussion, we were contacted by a number of folks asking for a response. And while we think it's always a good thing for folks to engage on topics like these, we thought that another perspective was in order. So let's dive in. *** What is "Games as a Service" and why does the negative definition proposed by Accursed Farms frame the argument unhelpfully? What is fraud, and why does its intention requirement effectively preclude it from being asserted when rules, contract terms, and the law are ambiguous? Why does the disclosure put forth on the back of the game box, and website, and network store, and EULA, matter, and how does it affect claims of deception? Why does legal precedent not work in the way Accursed Farms suggests, and why is intellectual property law so murky to begin with? Why do businesses not already use the contract terms at their disposal against their customers? Why should we be reticent about using the law against things we don't like? How does incendiary language limit the effectiveness of argument? How can we best protect the products of the industry that we love? And much, much more... In this episode of the Ars Technicast we talk about the fine art of the scam. Recently, Deputy Editor Nate Anderson and Ars Senior Writer Jon Brodkin wrote about the ways in which Internet scammers have taken to use the telephone to solicit users to allow them access to their PCs. Nate played the role of victim to one of these scams and wrote what happened. And then there's the phenomenon of users trolling the scammers back, which is both hilarious and fascinating. Deputy editor Nate Anderson joins Senior Apple Editor Jacqui Cheng and Social Editor Cesar Torres to talk about how these scams work, what might motivate both the scammers and trolls, and ideas about how sophisticated scams may become as video calls become more popular. Have you been suckered by a scam before? Maybe you know someone who did. Share your stories about Internet scams with us in the comments. Learn more about your ad choices.
