This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Alaska to discuss the case of Sophie Sergie, a young Yu'Pik woman attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In late April of 1993, Sophie's body was discovered in the bathroom of the women's dormitory on campus. But soon, without any leads, her case went cold. That was until 345 months later, when the same DNA evidence techniques used to catch the Golden State Killer pointed the police to a suspect... a suspect living in our own backyard. In the early morning hours of Monday, April 26, 1993, someone brutally raped, stabbed and shot Sophie Sergie in a college dorm on the University of Alaska campus in Fairbanks. Several hours later, a janitor discovered Sophie's body stuffed in a bathtub in a second-floor bathroom in the dorm. No one saw or heard anything. Sophie's case soon went cold and remained cold for the next 18 years. Would her murder ever be solved? At 2:00pm on Monday April 26th 1993 a janitor entered a bathroom on the 2nd floor of Bartlett Hall, a dorm at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The janitor was there to clean up on the women's floor of the dorm. When she entered the private stall with a bathtub she was faced with a horrifying discovery. Terrified, she ran out screaming but unable to speak from shock she grabbed a student to show them the horror she discovered. They called the police and soon the campus was swarming with police officers and crime scene tape hung on the door to the bathroom. Welcome to the Macabre Family Podcast. Generally when you think of solo artists - particularly in heavy metal - you automatic reaction is that a solo artist couldn't possibly possess all of the necessary skills and attributes to fully flesh out what is required to make a splash on the metal scene. If, like me, you think that way then take a listen to The Overcoming Project, the solo effort from Melbourne solo artist Doctor Mike Trubetskov and your mind will be blown.Trubestskov has recently released the closing chapter to his 'Determination Trilogy' of music with the brutally crushing 'Victory'.Inspired by an ominous mix of death and doom inspired riffs, spine crushing breakdowns and fast paced grooves, 'Victory' is just that for The Overcoming Project. Not that Trubetskov has done this alone. He has enlisted the skills of drummer Mike Heller (Fear Factory) and vocalist Jon Howard (Threat Signal) to expand his personal vision with the help of world class musicians who have bought into his vision.HEAVY caught up with Trubetskov to find out more, starting with just what The Overcoming Project is."It's a solo...," he measured, "it's an interesting one. Because I've been in a band called Gift Of Madness in Moscow and when I moved here to Australia years ago I had no band. I had no-one, and I knew no-one, but I kept writing some music and I kept refining some ideas and they were just sitting there. Then I had some doctorate challenges and visa challenges and life challenges in general and I kept putting them into those riffs and that musical direction and still they were just sitting there. In 2020- I think it was 2019 - I decided that I wanted to publish them. I started with the track 'Anxiety', which we published at HEAVY, and I hired some session musicians - Mike Heller from Fear Factory and Jon Howard from Threat Signal - and we also collaborated with my mate Sergie, who is from Moscow and he is my old friend and we did some stuff on the Russian music scene. That's how it came together."Solo projects have their obvious advantages and disadvantages, so we press Trubetskov on whether The Overcoming Project is a solo outfit because he couldn't find like minder people to work with in a band environment or whether he didn't want to relinquish creative control."It's just easier and it worked that way," he shrugged. "I wanted a very high quality studio recording and a bit of a challenge in terms of production and how things were put together rather than played. There were really particular ideas about the guitar tone and the guitar performance, stuff like that. About drums, about bass, and that's why it primarily existed as a studio project."In the full interview, Mike talks about the new single 'Victory', the heaviness of the song, working with Heller and Howard, how 'Victory' wraps up the trilogy of songs, how he feels about the journey now it is over, future music and more.

Episode 31 Sophie Sergie Part 1 of 2 In 1993, Sophie Sergie was found slain in a college dorm bathroom at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. Despite several witnesses who had heard the crime go down, and possibly even seen the suspect, the brutal murder of the visiting former student remained unsolved. The investigation was hampered by the overwhelming number of people with access to the scene, and the transience of the student body. When forensic genealogy was used decades later, it pointed to a man who was a student at the college at the time of the murder – and lived just one floor away in the very same dorm. And, he was alive and living in Maine. The trial of Steven A. Downs relied heavily on the DNA evidence left behind at the crime scene to connect him to the homicide 29 years earlier. To Support DNA: ID on Patreon, visit this link:https://www.patreon.com/DNAIDTo buy DNA ID Merch, visit this link:https://www.customizedgirl.com/s/dnaidpodcastFollow DNA: ID on Social Mediaon Twitter at- https://twitter.com/DNAIDPodcaston Facebook at- https://www.facebook.com/DNA-ID-True-Crime-Podcast-103667495017418on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/dnaidpodcast/Podcast home page- https://www.spreaker.com/show/dna-id
FAIRBANKS, ALASKA 1993: After more than two decades of searching for answers in the unsolved homicide of 20-year old Sophie Sergie, DNA evidence led detectives from Alaska to the doorstep of Steven Downs in Auburn, Maine. He was once a student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where Sophie's body was found in a bath tub in April of 1993. In February of 2022, Downs was back in Fairbanks, sitting in a courtroom awaiting the jury's verdict for the charges brought against him. On Thursday, February 10, 2022, the jury found Steven Downs guilty on the charges of murder and sexual assault. Sophie Sergie's killer was finally identified and convicted in the long-standing cold case. I covered Sophie Sergie's case in two parts on Dark Downeast. This episode contains updates and notable moments from the conclusion of the trial proceedings and a look at what's next for the case of Sophie Sergie. Sources are listed at darkdowneast.com.

On tonight's California Report: mask mandates are dropping throughout the state but they'll remain at immigration detention centers where COVID-19 is spreading and booster shots are hard to come by. Then in National Native News, a 29 year-old cold case comes to a close. 26 years is a long time to wait for answers in an unsolved homicide, but in 2019 the family of 20-year old Sophie Sergie finally had a glimmer of hope that closure was possible. Familial DNA evidence led cold case investigators from Alaska all the way to Auburn, Maine and to the doorstep of the man now charged with the murder of Sophie Sergie. The trial of Steven H. Downs began in January 2022 and continues as we speak. If you haven't tuned into part I of Sophie Sergie's story, please pause here and turn back one episode, because in this episode, you'll hear about the evidence, the admitted mistakes, and the list of alternative suspects that the defense says will change your mind about who committed this violent crime. At the end of it all, we all just want one thing – Justice for Sophie Sergie and peace for her family. Sources are listed at darkdowneast.com.
FAIRBANKS, ALASKA 1993: Sophie Sergie was a first generation college student from a small village in rural Alaska who set her eyes on building a better future for herself and her family. In April of 1993, someone cut that future short. This case played out on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks over 4000 miles from New England and nearly three decades in the past, but the long arm of justice knows no limits of distance or time. DNA evidence reached across the farthest corners of the United States to implicate the alleged killer of Sophie Sergie. He was working as a nurse in Auburn, Maine. The 2019 arrest of Steven Downs seemed like the first sign of real closure for Sophie's family, but as the trial proceedings play out in Alaska Superior Court right now in January of 2022, what seemed like a clear answer on the surface gets more difficult to pin down each day. This is Part I of Sophie Sergie's story. Part II is out on Monday, January 24, 2022 on Dark Downeast.

Familial DNA data from popular mail-order kits such as 23andMe and ancestry.com is helping investigators thaw years-old cold cases, but lawyers are not so sure about their validity. Such is the case of suspected murderer (and recently arrested) Steven Downs and the brutal murder of Sophie Sergie in Alaska in 1993. Whatever happened to Michael Madden? The fun-loving innocent young man mysteriously disappeared while on a camping trip in Northern California in 1996, and his disappearance remains unsolved to this day. Did a strange passerby in the woods kill him, is he still alive living elsewhere under a different name, or is this a tragic suicide without a body? Unfortunately, we may never know... When Lina Sergie Attar started Karam Foundation, the goal was to unlock the charity potential of the Arabic community in Chicago and reinforce the culture of giving to help others. This mission was brought into focus in 2011 during the "Arab Spring", especially the Syrian conflict. Now, Karam is an international NGO with offices in the USA and Turkey, helping Syrian refugees in the social and education sectors. We sat with Lina and we talked about the beginnings, the mission and the vision for the future. Visit: www.karamfoundation.org. for more info. Music: Bassel & The Supernaturals

A 20 year old was last seen alive outside a college dorm, surrounded by others. How did she go from there, to dead in a bathtub within hours? Decades later, they may have found the guy who did it who flew under the radar until good ol' DNA ratted him out. Here is Sophie's last story. Support the show (http://patreon.com/letstakealook)

Welcome everyone to This Was The Scene, the podcast that takes a look back at the late 90s / early 2000 Punk scene, I am your host, Mike Doyle. Samiam was formed in late 1988 after the breakup of the Gilman club mainstay Isocracy. Their first show was in January 1989 with Christ on Parade. They released records through New Red Archives and Hopeless Records in the US and Burning Heart Records in Europe. In the mid-'90s, the band had two releases on major labels, Atlantic Records in 1994 and Ignition/Tommy Boy in 1997. This path achieved modest mainstream success; a video for "Capsized" gained a lot of airplay on MTV, they performed on The Jon Stewart Show in 1994 and the single "She Found You" garnered considerable radio play in 1998. The band toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Japan with Bad Religion, Green Day, The Toadies, Sense Field, blink-182, and Millencolin. I got an intro to Sergie from Rob LWL and we set up a late Thursday call in August. Side note, check out his design work here - slappedtogether.com Here's what we talk about: His love of the Jersey accent Our very long ramble about interviews Not having any aspirations to be in a band What was the San Francisco scene like How he and Jason started Samiam Tres Cool being in the band but not being in the band What was Samiam’s following like What it was like being on a major label Their song being on Harvesting the Crust What did they write about Joining Knapsack Touring with At The Drive-In right before they broke up And a ton more Before we begin, my old band Lanemeyer has our first EP Stories For The Big Screen available on vinyl. The record was put out by iSurrender Records. It’s green vinyl with an etching of GOD I MiSS yOU GOD I MISS THIS PLACE on one side and we are doing a Black Friday Sale. Sergie Loobkoff is the lead guitar player in some influential bands like Samiam and Knapsack. Sergie is also an artist and graphic designer living in downtown Los Angeles. In the podcast we spoke about the early days and the beginnings of Samiam. Sergie and his band mates have fostered a nonchalant approach to their music. He hates to use the word "fans" when discussing the followers of his music. While not searching for fame and fortune, Samiam has been on major labels and has influenced hundreds of bands over the past 20 plus years. Though Sergie will be the first to talk down the accolades. check out Sergie's art on Etsy Help the podcast out by pledging on Patreon, www.patreon.com/apologue Brought to you by fetchclass.com Shop with amazon.ca, amazon.com and amazon.co.uk Bookmark the link and support the show!! Growing up a punk and metal fan in San Francisco doesn't seem like a fit for the podcast. But Sergie cut a different line through music to be a part of Samiam, one of the most revered bands on the west coast. I caught up with Sergie after the Knapsack reunion tour where we spoke about the 80s thrash scene happening in LA, his time with Solea and touring with Texas is the Reason plus what it meant to tour with Knapsack to such great audiences. Sergie also reads the worst review ever for Knapsack that I couldn't stop laughing about, what he really wants to do other than music and what two wishes he would ask a genie. Hope you enjoy. Art Of Electronica featuring Sergie also known as dj SRG, has only love for music. He was born with music playing in the background from the very first time he could even hear a sound. With his parents love for music, SRG was born with a very particular ear that allowed him to pick up any instrument and achieve everything that his goals had in store for him. Learning how to play every instrument from the woodwind family, to the piano, to the guitar, Sergie achieved what others couldn’t. Playing at top level city orchestras, to the highest city jazz bands, to being one of the best flutist players in the city…Sergie went for more. Please Enjoy AOE Podcast #3
