Athletes can find themselves overwhelmed by sleep trackers, HRV graphs, and AI-driven workouts that make decisions for them, leading to outsourced decision-making and a disconnect from their intuition. Joanna Sue Zeiger, born on May 4, 1970, is an esteemed American triathlete and a prominent figure in the world of sports and research. As the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion and a representative of the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics, Joanna's athletic achievements are remarkable. She began her athletic journey as a swimmer, competing alongside her sister Laurie at the 1989 Maccabiah Games, where she won multiple medals. Transitioning to triathlons, Joanna's dedication and mental toughness led her to numerous victories, including Ironman Brasil 2005 and Ironman Coeur d'Alene 2006. Have you ever wondered about the life of a professional triathlete? In this podcast series, we interview current and retired QT2 Systems Professional Triathletes, exploring the path to earning (and maintaining) a pro license, the nuts and bolts of training and racing, and the ups and downs along the way. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 6 features Doug MacLean. In 2006, at age 26, without any significant swim, bike or run experience, Doug decided to enter the world of triathlon. He raced IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene and IRONMAN Lake Placid in 2017, finishing both in under 11 hours. In December of 2018, Doug decided to dedicate himself to training and racing full time.  After a couple of years of being self-coached, Doug came to QT2 Systems in 2009. Under the coaching guidance of Tim Snow, Doug raced his first Kona in 2010, and then in 2011, won the amateur race at IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene, earning his pro license. Doug jumped straight into the pro circuit, and earned his first paycheck in his second race. Doug raced as a pro from 2011 through 2019, with his most memorable races coming late in his career - IRONMAN Boulder in 2018, and Challenge Roth in 2019. Through triathlon, Doug was able to achieve his childhood goal of becoming a professional athlete. Most recently and notably, he took 2nd overall in his age group at the 70.3 World Championship in Finland! Alex Torres, an Ironman Triathlete, shares his journey of overcoming challenges and realizing his potential to become an Ironman. Alex started his athletic journey as the "runt of the Torres family," but through hard work and determination, he proved everyone wrong and accomplished his goal of becoming an Ironman. One of the key pieces of advice that Alex shares is to never forget your "why." This is what will keep you motivated and inspired during the long and tedious moments of training. He also emphasizes that discipline and perseverance are essential in becoming an Ironman, but these qualities are anchored on your "why." Another important point that Alex mentions is that you don't have to have the most expensive equipment to participate in a triathlon. He was once embarrassed by his lack of fancy gear, but he was reminded that it's all about the "engine," meaning the person themselves. To sum it up, becoming an Ironman is achievable if you have the physical capability, financial means, and most importantly, the determination and commitment to see it through. Find your "why," stay committed, and never let anyone tell you that you can't do it. Alex ran his first marathon in 2004, the Chicago Marathon.  He has  ran the Chicago Marathon every year it has been held since 2004.  Alex is currently registered for the 2023 Chicago Marathon which will be his 19th consecutive Chicago Marathon. Alex first official race as an adult post military was the marathon distance. In 2010, he decided to compete in his first Ironman race, Ironman Louisville.  His first triathlon was the full Ironman distance. To date Alex has completed 14 full Ironman races.  Alex is currently scheduled to race Ironman Coeur d'Alene 2023 and on tap to race in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI in 2024 after qualifying via the legacy program. Professionally Alex is in the pharmaceutical industry as an Executive Institutional Representative in Grand Rapids, MI in the area of surgical anesthesia and heart failure. We've all heard the saying “Life is about choices.” Although it is tempting to point a finger to negative experiences, bad people, or peer pressure, it is still up to us to pick the path to move forward on their journey. James Eastland is a Marine, Veteran, ultramarathoner, and entrepreneur. However, he really should be a statistic. His biological father was sent to jail when he was 11 and released when James was 46. He had a few years with an engaged step dad, but that was lost when his mom divorced him. He lived in the projects with a single, struggling mother and older brother. During these years he and his brother survived severe childhood abuse.  It was a few caring people, a pastor and a youth group that helped guide him on the right path. He watched his older brother make choices with outcomes leading him to murder their grandmother and spending the majority of his life in jail. The club has a storied history of leading the way in gender equity   1978: Judy Collins and her husband, Commander John Collins, both participants in the 1974 Mission Bay Triathlon, launch the Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon in Waikiki, which combined the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, Honolulu Marathon, and a local cycling club route.   1979: Lyn Lemaire, a 28-year-old from Massachusetts, becomes the first woman to compete in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. Lemaire beats all but four men in the 15-person field.   1982: U.S. triathlete Julie Moss captivates a global audience with her crawl to the finish line at the Hawaii Ironman.   1983: Sally Edwards publishes the first book on triathlon. “Triathlon: A Triple Fitness Sport,” offers a comprehensive guide for training for “a total new fitness” based on her own experience in the sport.   1986: Using funds from an anonymous donor, the Hawaii Ironman introduces a prize purse for professional athletes. And in a move unprecedented in many other major sporting events, the payout is equal for both men and women — a standard that remains the status quo.   1990: Danskin launches a women's-only triathlon series in three cities: Long Beach, California, San Jose, California, and New York City. The growth of the Danskin series, as well as similar women-only events like Trek Triathlon and Irongirl races, are credited with boosting numbers among women in the sport.   2000: Triathlon makes its Olympic debut at the Sydney Games. The United States sends a trio of women Down Under, including Joanna Zeiger, who finishes fourth.   2004: Susan Williams, a 35-year-old mom from Long Beach, California, wins the first Olympic medal for the U.S. in triathlon, earning bronze at the Athens Games.   2005: U.S. Olympian Barb Lindquist retires as a professional and helps create USA Triathlon's Collegiate Recruitment Program, which identifies talent from the NCAA swimming and running programs as a way to funnel athletes toward the Olympic pipeline. She finds future Olympic gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen.   2014: Triathlon is designated as an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women   2016: Jorgensen caps her pro triathlon career by grabbing gold at the Rio Olympic Games, the first- gold medal for an American triathlete   2016: U.S. elite paratriathletes Grace Norman and Allysa Seely each win gold at the Paralympic Games. Hailey Danz and Melissa Stockwell also won medals, combining to sweep the podium in the PT2 sport class along with Seely.   2021: Katie Zaferes wins Olympic bronze at the delayed Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and the U.S. is one of only four countries to qualify three women for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and one of only two countries to place all three athletes in the top-20 with Zaferes winning bronze, Summer Rappaport placing 14th and Taylor Knibb 16th.   2021: Seely won gold Paralympic again to become the only female two-time Paralympic triathlete gold medalist. Danz became a two-time PTS2 silver medalist and Norman earned a silver in the PTS5 category. Kendall Gretsch also won the first women's triathlon wheelchair race in Paralympic history and became the fifth American to win gold medals at both the summer and winter Paralympic Games.   2022: USA Triathlon adds two college programs to offer women's collegiate triathlon to reach the milestone of 40 schools. Women's triathlon is now on its way to becoming an NCAA Championship Sport.   Colorado driver accused of "intentionally" hitting two cyclists — critically injuring one — still at large Police investigating a hit-and-run that wounded two cyclists in Evergreen, Colorado, on Sunday morning. One of the cyclists, identified as a woman by local authorities, suffered critical injuries as a result of the crash.   A 2018 Ford Escape registered to 39-year-old Alan "Haley" Mill allegedly swerved onto the shoulder of an interstate highway about 30 miles west of Denver. Witnesses told police the driver deliberately hit both cyclists before fleeing and later abandoning the vehicle. Witnesses said they saw Mill attempting "to dislodge a badly damaged bicycle from beneath his vehicle" in the parking lot of a restaurant after the collision, CBS Denver reported. ​Mark Meuser is a native Californian with a proven record of fighting for your constitutional rights.From a young age, Mark was an entrepreneur. At age 12, he picked cherries in the morning and then operated a street-side cherry stand in the afternoon. He also worked hard at caring for orphaned animals, often bottle-feeding sheep, pigs, and cows.By age 15, he was in a management position at a local restaurant. By age 21, he purchased his own pizza restaurant. While his restaurant business was thriving, Meuser started studying law. A few years later, he graduated with honors from Oak Brook College of Law. Meuser's unique training has taught him how to listen to people, formulate creative alternatives, and achieve workable solutions to real problems.As an attorney, Meuser secured an important victory for disabled Americans against United Airlines. In Gilstrap v. United Airlines, Meuser represented a disabled American injured by United when it failed to follow applicable federal law in how it handled her travel. The 9th Circuit agreed with Meuser that federal law permitted disabled Americans to sue airlines if those airlines failed to care for passengers as  the law provided.In 2017, Meuser joined the Dhillon Law Group where he has focused on Election, Political, and Constitutional Law. At Dhillon Law Group, he has had  the privilege of protecting critical First Amendment rights, for example, by defending Troy Worden from a frivolous lawsuit brought against him by Yvette Felarca, a national organizer for the organization “By Any Means Necessary,” one of Antifa's front groups.Meuser was also involved in a lawsuit against Governor Gavin Newsom when California tried to remove President Trump's name from the primary ballot by unconstitutionally changing the qualifications to run for President. Over the last year, Meuser has been involved in 22 lawsuits brought against Newsom for his unconstitutional usurpation of power as a result of COVID-19.In his free time, Meuser loves being outdoors, enjoying California's natural beauty. Whether he is hiking, bike riding, sailing, scuba diving, or snow skiing, Meuser is always quick to enjoy the diversity this state has to offer. Meuser's favorite bike ride was a five-day trip riding down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Orange County.When Meuser was young, he saw a Saturday afternoon sports special covering an Ironman. Impressed by the athletes who competed in it, in 2014 Meuser registered to compete in his first Ironman and was fully prepared to do the 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and marathon run. However, the event was canceled at the last minute due to the local forest fires.As Meuser rode his bike back to his car, he was in a devastating bicycle accident. Not to be deterred from his vision of completing an Ironman, Meuser registered for the same event a year later, only to run into unplanned difficulties. The third time is the charm, as three months later, he tried again, finishing the Ironman Cozumel in 12 hours and 45 minutes. In 2021, Meuser finished his second full Ironman at Ironman Coeur d'Alene. In 2020, Meuser was ranked by Ironman as the third best male in his age group (45-49) in the United States for the half-Ironman distance (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run).Meuser is a prolific reader, on average reading one book a week. Most of the books he has read are on the topics of American history and biography. Meuser also has a large collection of American political biographies, United States and California State Histories that were published over 100 years ago.

On this week's show an old friend returns. I say old in two ways. Firstly I have known him a long time and secondly, he's 74. Don't let that fool you. Simon Butterworth is one of the fittest men I know. In fact, he's probably fitter than most 40-year-olds. He's certainly fitter than me. When I competed at the Ironman World Championships in 2017 Simon passed me at the 12-mile mark on the run, and he went on to win the 70-74 age group and become a world champion. He was 70 at the time, I was 53! Recently, Simon won his age group at Ironman Coeur d'Alene and qualified once again to race in Kona. Sadly with the race being cancelled for 2021 (it may still happen in February 2022) he won't get the chance to race this year. The overall message it seems is that simply being fit doesn't mean you are healthy. Plaque — made of fat, calcium and other substances — can build up and narrow or close the arteries.   To detect this build-up, your physician may order cardiac calcium scoring — a test that is also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, a heart scan or calcium score.  This non-invasive CT scan (computed tomography) of the heart calculates your risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) by measuring the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries.   Plaque or calcium build-up in the coronary arteries causes heart disease or can lead to a heart attack. The coronary calcium scan is a better predictor of coronary events than cholesterol screening or other risk factor assessments.   About Your CAC Score A calcium score (sometimes called an Agatston score) is calculated based on the amount of plaque observed in the CT scan. It may be converted to a percentile rank based on your age and gender. The results from your cardiac scoring will be sent to your doctor.  Mine was a score of 26 and the 4th percentile of my age peers.   Your likelihood of having heart disease or a heart attack correlates with your calcium scoring. The lower your calcium score and percentile rank, the less likely you are to have a cardiac event compared to other men or women your age.   Calcium Score Results The purpose of the test is to understand your risk of heart attack or disease, taking preventive or corrective measures based on the results.   If you have any plaque present (a score greater than 0), your doctor may make recommendations for lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, eating better and exercising more. The higher your score the more treatment your doctor may recommend.   If you have a high score, you can make an appointment with one of our coronary artery disease specialists.   Zero: No plaque. Yes we have Kona and the IRONMAN World Championships but that is about individuals, today was about the teams and the sport and profession of triathlon.   The Collins Cup was designed to mirror golf's popular Ryder Cup pitting three teams of 12 athletes (6 men, 6 women) against each other. One team from Europe, the United States and Internationals.   The goal, to make professional triathlon a better spectator sport thus attracting more money to make the profession more lucrative and sustainable.   Will it work? Did it work? It's too early to say but nobody predicted the wild popularity of the Super Bowl. Triathlon will never be that popular but lets see what happens.   The Professional Triathlon Organisation orchestrated this “made for TV event”. Viewers watched 12 matches with one competitor from each team racing. Each match started 10 minutes apart. The entire race lasted about 5 hours. Cameras were all over the course capturing the 36 athletes racing in their own three person race. It was fun to watch and the coverage was good as was the announcing. It was especially fun to have Tour de France commentator Phil Liggett behind the mic. His voice just adds a tone of familiarity and importance.   IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship presented by the Utah Sports Commission. Among them will be over 100 of the world's top professional triathletes who will battle for a piece of the $350,000 USD total professional prize purse and the title of IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion.   Since the first IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship was held in 2006 the women's race has seen 10 different champions from five different countries. Swiss Daniela Ryf has won an event-best five times, and is coming off an undefeated season, including a win in St. George at the IRONMAN 70.3 North American Championship earlier this year. Together with Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) and Leanda Cave (GBR), Ryf also holds the distinction of having won both the IRONMAN World Championship® and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.   Aiming to dethrone Ryf will be a stellar group of professional female triathletes, including Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR), who is coming off a recent win at 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 European Championship Elsinore. Gravel Rules   My Experience With TriDot What is TriDot?  It's a training platform, but its pretty sophisticated.  It takes your race goals, your training data, puts threshold test on your training calendar, takes those threshold test results and uses AI to automatically adjusts your training plan and workouts.  You can also see your Threshold Test history and drill into the details.  It tracks your Fitness, Stress and Readiness on a graph.    TriDot also has an integrated App called RaceX.  Within RaceX, you can pick your "A" and "B" races (Ironman and Challenge branded).  You can browse race routes for any of the races in the database and look at the gps route, elevation and distance.  You can also see your Threshold Test history and drill into the details.  It tracks your Fitness, Stress and Readiness on a graph.    Within Diagnostics there's a feature called Phyiogenomics.  If you've used DNA-based ancestry services like Ancestry.com or 23 and Me, there is a downloadable text file that has your genome that can be used for things like nutrigenomics (using your DNA or genome data to understand if you have genetic markers for celiac disease or allergies), or pharma genomics (using genome data to treat/prevent disease. We have a mutual friend who learned she had DNA markers putting her at likely risk for breast cancer.    TriDot has a feature called PhysiogenomiX. It uses your DNA (genome data) to tailor the training plan and workouts to your genetic profile.   I uploaded my 23 and Me genome text file to TriDot.  Within a few seconds TriDot gave me an analysis that includes categorical summary and detailed results from specific genes related to physical training. These genes shown (and others) are used to enhance your training optimization.   The categories: Training Intensity Response is a relative measure of how you respond to high-intensity versus low-intensity training. Based on your genetic variations, you are predisposed to have a greater response to either high or low-intensity training. Aerobic Potential is a measure of your potential for developing a high aerobic capacity or high oxygen utilization (VO2max). This is not a measure of your current aerobic capacity. Rather, it is a measure of your aerobic trainability--your potential for improvement with proper training. Recovery Rate is a measure of your genetic ability to recover from exercise-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. This includes the level of stress and inflammation produced and the rate at which it is cleared. Injury Predisposition is a measure of how genetically prone you are to incurring soft tissue (tendon and ligament) injuries from training.   Lauren has also done it and we compared our results.  We took the very first category of Training Intensity Response.  At the top level we were both categorized as 40% responsive to Power vs 60% responsive to Endurance.  When you drill into the details, each Gene, the Result, Effect and a summary.   At the gene level we had about a half dozen genes that were different.  In the first gene, Lauren had a piece of DNA inserted and I had both of them deleted.   ACE: Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme I have both deleted (DD) so I tend to be respond better to power based training.  Lauren tends to respond well to a mixture of power and endurance. VEGFA: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Tends to be highly responsive to endurance training with good muscle efficiency and VO2max. Tends to adjust well to altitude training. Var-allele carriers produce a greater amount of VEGF.             IMPORTANT TO KNOW BEFORE DIGGING INTO YOUR GENETICS Your genetic makeup is only part of the equation. Genetics alone is insufficient to predict or identify talent. We have a mutual friend who learned she had DNA markers putting her at likely risk for breast cancer.    TriDot has a feature called PhysiogenomiX. It uses your DNA (genome data) to tailor the training plan and workouts to your genetic profile.   I uploaded my 23 and Me genome text file to TriDot.  Within a few seconds TriDot gave me an analysis that includes categorical summary and detailed results from specific genes related to physical training. These genes shown (and others) are used to enhance your training optimization.   The categories: Training Intensity Response is a relative measure of how you respond to high-intensity versus low-intensity training. Based on your genetic variations, you are predisposed to have a greater response to either high or low-intensity training. Aerobic Potential is a measure of your potential for developing a high aerobic capacity or high oxygen utilization (VO2max). This is not a measure of your current aerobic capacity. Rather, it is a measure of your aerobic trainability--your potential for improvement with proper training. Recovery Rate is a measure of your genetic ability to recover from exercise-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. This includes the level of stress and inflammation produced and the rate at which it is cleared. Injury Predisposition is a measure of how genetically prone you are to incurring soft tissue (tendon and ligament) injuries from training.   Lauren has also done it and we compared our results.  We took the very first category of Training Intensity Response.  At the top level we were both categorized as 40% responsive to Power vs 60% responsive to Endurance.  When you drill into the details, each Gene, the Result, Effect and a summary.   At the gene level we had about a half dozen genes that were different.  In the first gene, Lauren had a piece of DNA inserted and I had both of them deleted.   ACE: Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme I have both deleted (DD) so I tend to be respond better to power based training.  Lauren tends to respond well to a mixture of power and endurance. VEGFA: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Tends to be highly responsive to endurance training with good muscle efficiency and VO2max. Tends to adjust well to altitude training. Var-allele carriers produce a greater amount of VEGF.             IMPORTANT TO KNOW BEFORE DIGGING INTO YOUR GENETICS Your genetic makeup is only part of the equation. Genetics alone is insufficient to predict or identify talent. Fenella says she is just a big kid at heart and loves what she does.  With the biggest smile on her face she finished Challenge Daytona in 7th position last year before going on to claim a silver medal at IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene in June of this year stamping her ticket to Kona finishing in 8:59:49, a sub 9 debut IRONMAN.  She has had her fair share of injuries over the years but through her infectious positivity, commitment to her craft  and her patience she has bounced back to deliver some performances she can be very proud of including her win at IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona just one week after a bike crash in France which resulted in a DNF and stitches.  With an abundance of drive and determination coupled with natural talent and a thirst for success, the quietly spoken athlete lets her ability and performances do the talking.  Still in her twenties, on the cusp of a new decade,  Fenella has lots more fun to have in the sport of triathlon and there are plenty of podiums and medals in her future.

Racing an Ironman is always tough but add 30 degrees to the normal high and it can make it impossible. As I kept seeing her post about her training and running into her at the pool a few times I was excited to interview Nicole after Ironman Coeur d'alene because I wanted to hear about all the ups and downs mentally and physically of the day. It's always exciting to hear how a competitor felt when they finish a race. However, the interview is quite different because it is her first ever DNF. It was an unbearable day with 130+ degrees coming off the pavement during the ride and her body told her she had enough. Nearly 30% of the field didn't finish! As bad as I feel for her I am so happy she came on because there was so much to share about her day on the course. Believe me, Nicole is not done with Ironman yet!

"But I'm sure he's glued to his television somewhere watching. He told me before he left to go out and win it for him. He got me into this, not for the triathlon, but just to get outdoors."   Likewise, Carrie Lester, 40, won the women's race in a record time of 8 hours, 54 minutes and 51 seconds.   For Lester, who has now won eight Ironman triathlons, it was a bit of challenge just to get to the starting line.   "I'm 40 and had a career-best year in 2019 before COVID hit," said the Australian-born Lester, who lives in San Diego. "I had good momentum going into 2020 and obviously things changed. I really kind of felt lost, and wondered if I wanted to continue. Each year, it gets harder and harder as you get older. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to that level again. To be able to do, with the support of my husband, Scott, to be able to put out a performance like that, it was unbelievable."   Winners of the men's and women's races each received $15,000, with $9,000 for second and $7,000 for third. Only the top 10 male and female finishers received money from the $100,000 purse.   Long won in his previous appearance in Coeur d'Alene, finishing as the high amateur in 2015.   "I definitely went a lot faster today," Long said. "I had the same process and mindset. I've just dedicated my life to this in the last six years. I really aligned my priorities, commitments and just focused on racing. "But I'm sure he's glued to his television somewhere watching. He told me before he left to go out and win it for him. He got me into this, not for the triathlon, but just to get outdoors."   Likewise, Carrie Lester, 40, won the women's race in a record time of 8 hours, 54 minutes and 51 seconds.   For Lester, who has now won eight Ironman triathlons, it was a bit of challenge just to get to the starting line.   "I'm 40 and had a career-best year in 2019 before COVID hit," said the Australian-born Lester, who lives in San Diego. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to that level again. "I had the same process and mindset. I've just dedicated my life to this in the last six years. I really aligned my priorities, commitments and just focused on racing. Page Williams is a California-based triathlete and Ironman, is the blogger behind Twenty-Six and Then Some, and is a senior marketing manager at LinkedIn. Before heading to LinkedIn, where she oversees digital and social media and paid media strategy for the company’s brand campaigns, Page worked at Nike, where she was part of the Access to Sport group, working on the Designed to Move initiative. Page is also a mom-to-be: She has a baby boy on the way who is expected to make his debut this summer. On this episode, Page and I talk about how she’s feeling heading into her third trimester, how her pregnancy has been going, and why she thinks her baby is going to be “a little Tyrannosaurus rex.” She also gets professional and shares the one question you should ask potential employers, her best advice for women who want to work in the tech industry or in Silicon Valley, and why you should always send business-related emails on your phone. We all go through phases in our life when it seems the world is against us. Curveballs, blocks and signs of the opposite kind that we think we deserve just keep coming at us. What many of us forget during these times is that we have a choice to cry poor me or have faith that it is all there to prepare us for something greater. A belief that there are no mistakes and a realization that life is a series of waves. Some carry us gently to shore while others pummel us before we can even catch a breath of air. We all have times in our lives when we feel like defensive linemen and today’s guest is no exception. Pro-triathlete Maggie Rusch knows how to stand strong in the face of adversity and keep her head held high when the punches just keep coming. These are just some of the attributes that makes Maggie one of the toughest competitors in the field. But she is tough not just because she can suffer, she is resilient and grounded enough to see that the tough times are blessings in disguise. Her challenges have led to deep introspection that has allowed her to pursue what she is passionate about in life. Triathlon. A competitive volleyball player through high school and college, Maggie has lived the life of an athlete from a young age. She shares her what if story with us regarding her chance at triathlon, before she even started playing volleyball, only to find her multi-sport love once again after college. She was quickly reminded that she was pretty good at this sport. At her first Ironman in 2013 she place 4th overall and qualified for the Ironman World Championship where suffered a serious case of heat stroke and, because her body temperature surpassed 108 degrees, she had a very small chance of survival. Thankfully Maggie was able to recover and she went on to win Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 2014 then returned to Kona for her redemption race. Maggie’s story is one of overcoming adversity and getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. As a full-time consultant and professional triathlete with a bumpy track record Maggie has recently recommitted herself to her health. Better recovery, nutrition and meditation are just a few of the things that she is incorporating into her training regime. Maggie shares how just five minutes a day is already making a difference in her life. We talk about triathlon in Asheville and she shares insight into her nutrition and her tools to stay focused and away from the noise in her head. Maggie is someone who cannot give up but she is also someone who is willing to fail. She puts it all out there, something that many are too scared to do. In 2014, in an attempt to avoid another heat stroke experience, Maggie packed up and headed to Norway for the Norseman Extreme triathlon. She describes Norseman as the hardest race she’s ever done and with a 2nd place finish Maggie Rusch, once again, shows the world that she is tough as nails. Beyond the races, the training and her full-time career Maggie seeks something deeper, she is looking for more calm in her life. The idyllic balance to her go, go, go tendencies and quite possibly one of her most challenging goals. She knows that it is only herself that can bring this calm into view and like everything else Maggie takes on, we know she won’t give up until she finds it. Maggie is as sweet as she is badass, we really enjoyed our time with her during our stay in Asheville and hope you enjoy the show.
