Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 2 features QT2 Systems athlete Lauren Paulson, coached by Anne Basso. At the end of last year, Lauren's husband asked her how she wanted to celebrate her upcoming 50th birthday. Her response was "I love racing. I want to race." So Lauren decided to celebrate her 50th birthday by doing a race each month of the year - and we're not talking about 5Ks! This experienced long course triathlete and trail runner kicked things off in January with the Miami Marathon. Over the course of the year, her races have included two 100Ks, an IRONMAN 70.3 and the SOS Triathlon. In November, she will hit the trails for her longest run race ever - the Pinhoti 100 miler. When Lauren shared her idea with her Coach Anne Basso, Anne was immediately on board. Over the past year, she has worked with Lauren to balance training and recovery, and allow Lauren to not only participate but to race well. Lauren credits Anne's coaching for her success in being able to do these back to back to back races. Throughout her years as an endurance athlete, Lauren has time and again done things she never thought she could do. By removing limits, she opened up vast possibilities. It also brings up the role of the National Labor Relations Board in overseeing union elections and addressing complaints of unfair labor practices. Exxon Mobil's Shareholder Rights Lawsuit The lawsuit by Norges Bank Investment Management against Exxon Mobil focuses on shareholder rights and corporate governance. It examines the fiduciary duties of corporations to their shareholders and the legal mechanisms available to shareholders to hold corporations accountable. NCAA's Historic Revenue Sharing Agreement: The NCAA's settlement to share revenue with athletes represents a significant shift in amateurism and the legal concept of student-athletes' rights. It challenges the traditional notion that student-athletes should not be compensated beyond scholarships and could redefine the economic landscape of collegiate sports. FTX Bankruptcy Developments: The support for Sullivan & Cromwell's role as the main bankruptcy attorney for FTX, despite potential conflicts of interest, brings up ethical considerations in legal practice. It also highlights the complexities of bankruptcy law, particularly in the emerging field of cryptocurrency. Andrew loves exploring the mangroves down in Key Biscayne where he calls home. However, he got sick and tired of seeing trash each time he went out to enjoy wild Florida. Like many of our guests, Andrew is action-oriented and decided to do something about it. His big plan? Start picking up all the trash. It was that simple. His impact has grown into dozens of others doing similar work to him, making it their passion to clean south Florida. Andrew drives awareness in other ways too. He carried a 35-pound bag of mangrove trash (currently in History Miami's permanent collection) the length of the 2019 Miami Marathon and led a team that hauled a 130-pound trash cart throughout the 2020 Miami Marathon. These efforts raised over $30,500 to protect Miami's coastal habitats. Andrew has a recurring guest lecture series at the University of Miami, Cornell, Clemson, and local middle and high schools about his adventures in litter. Andrew has also worked as a research associate at the Harvard Business School, where his 17 academic publications sold over 10,000 copies. He implemented U.S. foreign policy at the State Department. As Mexican President Felipe Calderón's assistant, he facilitated the decision-making process of one of the world's highest-level policymakers.Follow Andrew:https://www.instagram.com/andrewotazo/?hl=enRead his book, Miami Creation Myth here: https://miamicreationmyth.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/florida-uncut/donations

The company has partnerships with thousands of small farmers and buys the majority of its meat products from certified human sources… The downside to this approach, however, is that Chipotle occasionally runs into issues with its supply chain, especially contamination… Chipotle stock is sitting at a 1.3% gain for the year so far and is nearing a 52-week high. ESG rating: 62 10. PepsiCo (PEP) PepsiCo is one of the world's largest producers of bottled water… The company's goal is to put more water back into each of the aquifers it uses as water sources than it takes out of them… The price of PepsiCo stock has been flat to down slightly since the start of the year, but investors can still benefit from the stock's 2.70% dividend yield. 10 months ago, Amanda Leve shocked the wrestling world with one of the most iconic upsets of the year. At 25 years old, Amanda is a professional MMA fighter and considered one of the top grapplers of her generation. This week, Selene Yeager talks to Amanda about her experience as a young woman in sport. While the majority of the women we've had on this series were alive in the years following the inception of Title IX, Amanda gives us her perspective on the ways Title IX has helped/hindered her wrestling career in the modern day. 10 months ago, Amanda Leve shocked the wrestling world with a huge upset win over the seemingly indomitable Gabi Garcia. Selene and Amanda discuss the inner workings and nuances of women's wrestling and the sexist beliefs held by many institutions. From fighting against the boys, to being told women's wrestling is too "intimate" to be allowed, Amanda has seen it all. And of course, Selene asks Amanda all about that win against Gabi Garcia. Frankie is.........humbly making Miami a landmark running club city. Born in Coconut Grove, he remembers the first time his dad invited him out for a run, and the rest is history. Loving the feeling of independence and control that running provides, he did cross country in high school, and walked on to two years of track at FIU. After studying public relations as an undergrad, he ended up going for a Masters in Public Administration, realizing he had an affinity for local politics and government work. While working on his own small business, and as an intern for various elected officials, he one day landed himself in a room where the question was asked, Why Miami no longer had its own marathon...........(there use to exist an Orange Bowl Marathon). At the ripe young age of 21, Frankie stepped up to the plate and helped launch the first edition of the Miami Marathon in 2003. Producing races ever since he was a teenager, he was uniquely situated to overcome the red tape and political buy-in required, resulting in an event that has helped bring over 200 million dollars of revenue to South Florida. Since getting bought out by fitness giant, Lifetime, Frankie has been focused on growing the Baptist Health - Nike run clubs, which now total 8 different locations and host thousands of social runners each week, in addition to recently being named Miami's Chief Wellness Officer by Mayor Francis Suarez. Check out one of the run clubs near you by visiting www.runclubnetwork.com, and follow Frankie on IG @frankieruiz. All paces are welcome.
TTB 183: Trashing the Florida Mangroves Andrew Otazo removed 15,290 pounds of trash from South Florida's mangrove forests and ocean. Andrew has a recurring guest lecture series at the University of Miami, Clemson, and local middle and high schools on grassroots activism. Michael Miller talks with legendary running coach and Co-founder of the Miami Marathon, Frankie Ruiz
Frankie Ruiz is born and raised in Miami and if you don’t know him let me share that he’s passionate about running. He is one of the founders of The Miami Marathon, he coaches a local high school cross-county team and he leads a large group of very popular community run clubs, AND he’s the Chief Running Officer at Life Time Fitness. We go back in time and chat about Frankie’s start as a runner and how it came to be that he was part of the team that started the Miami Marathon. He also shares some of the local Miami Marathon history which is fun for any locals. We recorded this episode in November 2020 and it’s been a very challenging year for people who plan live events. In this episode we chat about some of those challenges from the perspective of an organizer who is managing the expectations of a vibrant running and triathlon community and trying to balance that with being a race director in charge of a major marathon and other live events in Miami all of that during this crazy year filled with uncertainty and the unknown. We also talk about virtual races and some of the things that were considered in deciding not to hold a live 2020 version of the Miami Marathon. Frankie Ruiz explains the many options with the Virtual Version of the 2020 Miami Marathon. He shows the prototype of the medal which you cannot see in the audio version but you can find in the video of the interview. There’s a lot more in this interview that you’ll enjoy. Thank you Frankie Ruiz for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. #MiamiFamous #VirtuallyMiamiFamous You can find the Miami Marathon here https://www.themiamimarathon.com/ You can find Frankie directly on both Facebook and Instagram @FrankieRuiz _________________________________________________ Keep up with the host Amy Stone at www.amysaysso.com Looking for Podcasting Gear? In this episode of Le Run Down I made my way down to New York City for the marathon and had the opportunity to chat with elite marathoner, Allie Keiffer. She went into her first marathon, thinking she was going to do the half the night before and ended up winning it with a time of 2:55:30. That was the 2016 Miami Marathon, and only a year later she managed to shave 25 minutes off her time, finishing 5th in New York. "I had never been driven by my own desire to get help. It was always other people pushing me to do it. Once I decided on my own and hit that rock bottom, everything got better very quickly." —Kate Landau Kate Landau is a 42-year-old single mom and physician's assistant living in Florida with her daughter, Grace. She's also a 2:33 marathoner. But the road to becoming an elite-level runner in her forties hasn't been easy for Kate, who is set to run the Boston Marathon this Monday (and is gunning for a "2:30-ish" time). Kate started running competitively as a young age, and was a star athlete at her high school. She competed in the Junior Olympics and graduated as valedictorian of her class. But, not wanting her running progress to be halted by puberty, Kate dove headfirst into an aggressive eating disorder, which became a mainstay in her life for nearly 20 years. She endured more than 25 stress fractures in seven years, and battled serious exercise addiction. It wasn't until after having Grace that Kate started to run again — and run fast. She won the Eugene Marathon last year, and the Miami Marathon earlier this year. She finished eighth at the 2018 Chicago Marathon, and was the third American female to finish. At the USATF 15K championships, Kate came in fourth — and she was the oldest in the top 10 by more than a decade. Next year, she'll compete at the 2020 Olympic Trials in the marathon. On this episode, Kate talks openly about her history with anorexia and how it shaped her life, and talks about her relationship with competition and why she always wanted to "be the best." Carrie interviews elite runner Allie Kieffer! They discuss her recent fifth place finish at the TCS NYC Marathon, where she set a huge PR. Allie also talks about running through grief and loss and her future racing plans. Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Allie Kieffer Allie graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.A. in Psychology in June 2009. At Wake Forest, she competed on the cross country and track & field teams for four years and earned All-ACC honors in cross country in 2008 and was also selected as the ACC Runner of the Week in 2008. In 2012, Allie qualified for the US Olympic Trials in the 10,000m, but was unable to compete due to injury. In January 2016, Allie was the first place woman finisher at the Miami Marathon (2:55:30). Later that year, she set the indoor marathon world record at the The Fort Washington Avenue Armory Indoor Track Marathon in a time of 2:44:44 (the record was broken the following year). In 2017, Allie placed 4th at the USATF 10 Mile Championships (54:20) and went on to finish 5th at the TCS NYC Marathon (2:29:39). Allie lives and trains in Buffalo, New York.
Shalane Flanagan may have won this year’s TCS New York City Marathon, but the next American to cross the line was Allie Kieffer, who finished in 2:29. Not only did Allie nab a 26-minute personal best time that day, she was also the fifth place overall finisher. Not bad for a self-coached, unsponsored runner from Buffalo, NY! On this episode, Allie talks about every aspect of her groundbreaking race, from the injury that almost kept her from lining up at the start — but that ultimately led to the strong race she had — to her mental state before, during, and immediately after the race. She explains how what was once her greatest fear — running the race alone — ended up being the greatest gift, and breaks down how she managed to negative split a tough course, passing a handful of runners in that final 10K. Allie talks about how — and why! — she set the world record for the fastest indoor marathon last year (that’s 211 loops around a 200-meter indoor track, by the way), and opens up about the tremendous and tragic losses she and her family have faced over the years, including the death of her sister. Then, Allie talks about her struggles with body image, and offers up her advice for women going through similar experiences, as well as what she wishes all female runners understood. And then, of course, she talks about the question everyone’s asking: What’s next for Allie Kieffer? Here in Miami when you say the name, Frankie Ruiz, chances are it conjures up memories of the incredibly popular and late Puerto Rican salsa singer belting out, "Bailando"or another one of his many popular hits. But to many in Miami's athletic circles, Frankie Ruiz is synonymous with the Miami Marathon which just celebrated its 15th year this past January. Inspired by his father from a young age to run, he found it a great way to explore his hometown and as a sport he could always compete in. Looking to inspire his team of runners at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Frankie invited a 12 year old athlete and double amputee by the name of Rudy Garcia Tolson who had aspirations of running a marathon. This fortuitous meeting eventually set the wheels in motion for Frankie and his partners at the time to create a marathon in Miami that could stand toe to toe with other reputable races such as New York City and Chicago. Faced with Miami's bad reputation of being a hot, humid, and crime ridden city, many may have thought that a 26.2 road race through the streets of Miami was a bad idea, but Frankie and his team have worked hard to silence the naysayers and to prove to runners throughout the world that this isn't a marathon or (spinning) finisher's medal you want to miss. Frankie's involvement in the community is widespread and his desire to empower athletes of all levels to achieve their personal best is evident in the various groups he's involved in, including the 7 State Championships and 1 SE National Regional Nike NXN Title earned by the Belen Jesuit Cross Country Team which he has coached for the past 19 years. Jose Sotolongo works with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau for Miami. Jose is a passionate Miami runner who has run the Miami Marathon or the Miami Half Marathon every year since it started in 2003. www.themiamimarathon.com His story is similar to many people that as an adult he came to running as a way to lose weight and quit smoking. His first run of a mile ended with his neighbor thinking he was having a heart attack. Jose has run 16 Full and 36 half marathons. We talk about running the first edition of the Toyota Prius Tropical Marathon in 2003 and how the race has changed in 14 years. We talk about what perks you get when you run a race every year. We talk about what his favorite part of the Miami Marathon course is. We talk about Miami 365 and also where he thinks the best place to run in Miami. Jose told me that Miami is the only city that has downloadable running routes www.miamiandbeaches.com . That is pretty cool. Jose's favorite other local race is the Turkey Trot and he explains why that is. He also gives some advice for new runners getting ready for their first marathon. Because of Jose's position with the convention bureau he has some great information about the impact of the marathon on the city of Miami. We also chat about how being a little bit competitive can keep you motivated from year to year. We talk about the famous quote from Dean Karnases which might have actually been said first by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.” ― Dean Karnazes “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” - MLK Jr. I want to say a special thank you to Frankie Ruiz - unofficial Miami running Mayor of Miami for connecting me with Jose Sotolongo for this interview. Thank you for listening and be sure to visit www.amysaysso.com for more fun stuff that I'm doing.
