You don't start on the top team, you don't love your coach, you're not the “obvious” recruit. So what? Olivia Heidel just turned that story into a pro contract in Germany.Welcome to Oak Performance Radio, where we talk about what it really takes to perform at a high level. The show looks at training, preparation, and decision-making through real athletes, coaches, and experiences, on and off the field.Episode HighlightsIn today's episode, Adam Lane sits down with setter Olivia Heidel to walk through the real path from freshman team and twos squads to Division I, a conference championship, and finally signing to play professionally in Germany. They get into what it's like to be labeled early, play for a mentally and emotionally abusive coach, walk away from a five–year full ride, use the transfer portal the right way, and rebuild your love for the game inside a healthy culture. Parents, athletes, and coaches get an honest look at what actually matters if you want to play at a high level and still like who you are when you're done.Episode OutlineIntroduction and Background of Olivia HeidelOlivia's Journey to Professional VolleyballChallenges and Successes at Michigan TechTransition to IUP and UNCWPreparation for Professional Volleyball in GermanyAdvice for Young AthletesEpisode Chapters00:00 Intro & who is Olivia01:21 Deciding to play pro volleyball02:40 Finding an agent and German club05:32 Signing the contract & leaving in August08:10 Moving overseas and family reactions10:03 Club and high school years on “twos” teams12:19 Illness, COVID year, and lost recruiting time16:45 Full ride to Michigan Tech and toxic environment20:18 Entering the transfer portal and choosing IUP22:26 Winning conference and NCAA run at IUP28:01 Following coaches to UNCW and rebuilding35:00 D2 vs D1 speed, physicality, and coaching37:36 Advice to athletes on labels, fit, and leaving43:10 Adam's reflections and closingConclusionOlivia's path is not the clean highlight reel people expect. She was not the obvious star, did not get the perfect first college fit, and did not ride one school from freshman year to senior night. She put her head down, worked, made brutal decisions when things were unhealthy, and trusted that there was something better on the other side of uncomfortable moves. For athletes and parents, her story is a clear reminder that depth charts, team labels, and early recruiting wins do not decide your ceiling. In this episode of Hearing Architecture, we're joined by Nikos Kalogeropoulos and Nectar Efkarpidis of Molonglo, in a conversation co-hosted by Dr Sally Farrah. Nikos and Nectar are not registered architects, but Molonglo's work has had a profound influence on the way people think about development, culture and place, particularly in Canberra, where projects such as NewActon and Dairy Road have shown how architecture can move beyond individual buildings to shape whole precincts, communities and ways of living. This conversation explores the values, risks and long-term thinking behind that work. We discuss what it means to create places that are generous, layered and culturally alive, how architecture can be supported through unconventional models of development, and why the quality of the built environment depends not only on architects, but on clients, collaborators and the systems that allow good ideas to survive. It's a conversation about stewardship, ambition, design culture and the difficult art of making places that feel as though they could only belong where they are. Vassilis Paleokostas, and his big brother Nikos, grew up shoeless in a Greek mountain village. When the boys moved to a city, they discovered a talent for robbery — and honed it with a mysterious criminal known locally as The Artist. Before long, the trio were pulling off some of the most daring heists in European history. At a volatile time of financial crashes, leftwing guerrillas and political corruption, the brothers dove into a new gig: kidnapping billionaire business magnates. What confounded cops the most was how Vassilis Paleokostas distributed his loot among the poor, and how the Greek people loved him for it. If authorities did catch up with the country's Robin Hood, there wasn't a prison in the land that could hold him for long. Cue decades of capers that could keep a Hollywood writers' room busy for months. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jeder Moment, in dem jemand merkt „Ich will da raus“, zählt. Klarheit. Leben.Kein schneller Weg.Aber ein echter.#substitution #recovery #sucht #wegraus #stabilität #lebenändern #suchthilfe

In this continuation of The Past Macabre's exploration of fossils and myth, host Stephanie Rice examines how ancient cultures interpreted fossil discoveries and connected them to tales of monsters, heroes, and gods.Through oral traditions, archaeological finds, and texts from the Mexica (Aztecs) and Maya of Mesoamerica, the Hopi, Zuni, and Dine (Navajo) of the American Southwest, pre-Christian Ireland, and Classical Greece, this episode explores what these stories tell us about humanity's enduring curiosity about the natural world.Offline Sources Cited:Bierhorst, John. 1992. Nikos Sotirakopoulos Discusses His Journey from Marxism to ObjectivismIn this episode of The Rational Egoist, Dr. Nikos Sotirakopoulos joins Michael Liebowitz to share his intellectual journey from the radical Left to the philosophy of reason and individualism. Once an active Marxist, Nikos reflects on what drew him to collectivist movements in his youth and what ultimately led him to reject them. They discuss the emotional and philosophical appeal of Marxism, the moral void it attempts to fill, and why so many young people are still captivated by its promises today. Nikos explains how his transition to Objectivism reshaped his understanding of freedom, morality, and the role of the individual in society. Now a speaker and writer for the Ayn Rand Institute and an instructor for Ayn Rand University, Dr. Sotirakopoulos teaches about Marx, the communist movement, and the New Left—drawing on both his academic expertise and personal experience to expose the errors of collectivist ideology. Before joining ARI, Nikos spent more than a decade in academia in the UK, teaching at the University of Kent, Loughborough University, and York St John University. He is the author of The Rise of Lifestyle Activism: From New Left to Occupy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) and Identity Politics and Tribalism: The New Culture Wars (Societas, 2021), and is a frequent commentator on UK media.Tune in for an insightful conversation about philosophy, moral conviction, and what it truly means to think for yourself.About Michael Liebowitz – Host of The Rational EgoistMichael Liebowitz is the host of The Rational Egoist podcast, a philosopher, author, and political activist committed to the principles of reason, individualism, and rational self-interest.

On today's episode we discuss how international and regional communist parties and actors influenced the political development of the Greek Communist Party between 1918-1956, with a special focus on the Soviet Union and the Balkans. Our guest Nikos Marantzidis published his book Under Stalin's Shadow: A Global History of Greek Communism in 2023.Book description:Under Stalin's Shadow examines the history of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) from 1918 to 1956, showing how closely national Communism was related to international developments. The history of the KKE reveals the role of Moscow in the various Communist parties of Southeastern Europe, as Nikos Marantzidis shows that Communism's international institutions (Moscow Center, Comintern, Balkan Communist Federation, Cominform, and sister parties in the Balkans) were not merely external factors influencing orientation and policy choices.Based on research from published and unpublished archival documents located in Greece, Russia, Eastern and Western Europe, and the Balkan countries, Under Stalin's Shadow traces the KKE movement's interactions with fraternal parties in neighboring states and with their acknowledged supreme mentors in Stalin's Soviet Russia. Marantzidis reveals how, because the boundaries between the national and international in the Communist world were not clearly drawn, international institutions, geopolitical soviet interests, and sister parties' strategies shaped in fundamental ways the KKE's leadership, its character and decision making as a party, and the way of life of its followers over the years.Nikos Marantzidis is Professor of Political Science in the Balkan, Slavic, and Oriental Studies Department at the University of Macedonia and Visiting Professor at Charles University in Prague. He has published extensively on Greek and European Communism and Greek civil war history

In my book, I want to draw out two facets of William Blake, which I think get routinely sidelined now. My conversation with Jane Clark and Nikos Yiangou enabled us to explore these dimensions. One is that Blake was a very sharp thinker. He had a very accurate and clear critique of the ideas that were beginning to bed down in his time and have really shaped our times in the modern Christian West. A second is that he is a religious figure, which gets sidelined in two ways. He lived daily with perceptions of angels and other entities: the divine, the dead. I don't explain that away by pathologising Blake. He is also a clear Christian mystic, a very important voice in Western Christianity since the Reformation - connecting us back to a mystical core, which again is very often sidelined. For more about my book, Awake! Send us a textEpisode Summary: New research on how dietary fats, particularly omega-6 fatty acids like linoleic acid, influence triple-negative breast cancer progression by activating the mTOR pathway, a key regulator of cell growth; role of the FABP5 protein in enhancing cancer cells' sensitivity to omega-6 fats; differences between breast cancer subtypes; broader implications of dietary balance for health.About the guest: John Blenis, PhD is a Professor of Pharmacology at the Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. Nikos Koundouros, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow in Blenis' lab.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Transcript and other information on Substack.Key Points:mTOR pathway acts as a cellular “brain,” sensing nutrients like amino acids, glucose, and fats to regulate growth. Its dysregulation can drive cancer.High dietary omega-6 fatty acids, like linoleic acid found in seed oils, can fuel triple-negative breast cancer growth by activating mTOR.FABP5, a lipid chaperone protein, is overexpressed in triple-negative breast cancer, making these tumors more sensitive to omega-6 fats, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target.Modern diets with high omega-6 to omega-3 ratios disrupt inflammation balance, unlike historical 1:1 ratios, potentially increasing cancer risk.Genetic variations and cancer subtypes highlight the need for tailored dietary recommendations, as blanket nutrition advice may not suit all patients. While omega-6 fats exacerbate existing triple-negative breast cancer, their role in initiating cancer remains unclear, requiring further study.High omega-6 intake may influence other cancers (e.g., prostate, colon) and chronic diseases like obesity, linked to FABP5 and inflammation.Related episode:M&M 200: Dietary Fats & Seed Oils in Inflammation, Colon Cancer & Chronic Disease | Tim Yeatman & GaneSupport the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, and more at the M&M Substack Affiliates: KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + potassium, calcium & magnesium, formulated with kidney health in mind. https://youtu.be/-c6W8JuZsVo Podcast audio: Oppression and authoritarianism have been constant themes in regimes that ruled in the name of Marxism. From the Soviet Union to Cuba and from Yugoslavia to China, individual rights were ignored and violently suppressed. Is such anti-individualism a feature or a bug in Marxism? What about Marx himself? How did he view the individual? Was he the one who planted the seed for the future orgy of anti-individualist violence that has been perpetrated in his name? Nikos Sotirakopoulos tackles these questions in this talk from OCON 2024. Recorded live on June 15 in Anaheim, CA as part of OCON 2024.
How does Europe get cheap energy again? Are climate goals at odds with the need to remain economically competitive? Are we about to see an empowered and emboldened Europe, ready to take on China and the US?Barely five years into the 2020s, this decade is already shaping up to be one of the most turbulent since the Second World War. As we record this episode, the US has just slapped 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, prompting swift retaliation from Europe and Canada. The energy landscape is just as volatile. While the US seems set on spending the next four years as a semi-rogue petrostate—acting as if climate change were an afterthought—China is seizing the moment. It's doubling down on EVs and electrification at home, tightening its grip on clean energy supply chains, and dominating global exports of solar panels, batteries, EVs, wind turbines, and even cables. In doing so, Beijing is cementing its status as the world's premier electro-state.This leaves Europe at a crossroads. How does the EU tackle sky-high energy prices while reducing its reliance on US LNG and Chinese clean tech? Can it craft a compelling narrative to counter the rising tide of populism that's circling ever closer to the Berlaymont building in Brussels? To help us unpack these critical questions, we're joined by Nikos Tsafos, Greece's recently promoted Deputy Energy Minister. His portfolio spans energy and emissions, and he collaborates with policymakers across transport and industry—not just in Greece, but throughout the EU.Thank you to Nikos Tsafos for providing the graphs showing Greece's energy transition.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Nikolaos Ntirlis is a Correspondence chess champion, and computer engineer who has become well known in the chess world for his vast opening expertise. Nikolaos is quite skilled at finding original opening ideas, and has grown popular through his books, and by highlighting new opening ideas on his Twitter/X account. The ideas Nikos suggests have often seen quick adoption by Grandmasters, and he has even seen moves he highlighted subsequently appear in the games of Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Girl. In fact, GM Giri wrote the Foreword to Nicolaos' newest book, the excellent Reimagining 1. E4. The book offers new ideas for White across many defenses to 1. E4, and explains opening concepts clearly without bombarding you with opening theory. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of Nikolaos' opening enthusiasm, how best to use engines, as well as which defenses to 1.e4 were most challenging to combat theoretically. Nikolaos is also an accomplished chess trainer who hasworked with the national team of Denmark. In our conversation, he offered some helpful chess improvement advice with a philosophical bent. Lastly, we discussed some of Nicolaos' other interests including correspondence chess, chess books, and martial arts.
