https://youtu.be/-c6W8JuZsVo Podcast audio: Oppression and authoritarianism have been constant themes in regimes that ruled in the name of Marxism. From the Soviet Union to Cuba and from Yugoslavia to China, individual rights were ignored and violently suppressed. Is such anti-individualism a feature or a bug in Marxism? What about Marx himself? How did he view the individual? Was he the one who planted the seed for the future orgy of anti-individualist violence that has been perpetrated in his name? Nikos Sotirakopoulos tackles these questions in this talk from OCON 2024. Recorded live on June 15 in Anaheim, CA as part of OCON 2024.

How does Europe get cheap energy again? Are climate goals at odds with the need to remain economically competitive? Are we about to see an empowered and emboldened Europe, ready to take on China and the US?Barely five years into the 2020s, this decade is already shaping up to be one of the most turbulent since the Second World War. As we record this episode, the US has just slapped 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, prompting swift retaliation from Europe and Canada. The energy landscape is just as volatile. While the US seems set on spending the next four years as a semi-rogue petrostate—acting as if climate change were an afterthought—China is seizing the moment. It's doubling down on EVs and electrification at home, tightening its grip on clean energy supply chains, and dominating global exports of solar panels, batteries, EVs, wind turbines, and even cables. In doing so, Beijing is cementing its status as the world's premier electro-state.This leaves Europe at a crossroads. How does the EU tackle sky-high energy prices while reducing its reliance on US LNG and Chinese clean tech? Can it craft a compelling narrative to counter the rising tide of populism that's circling ever closer to the Berlaymont building in Brussels? To help us unpack these critical questions, we're joined by Nikos Tsafos, Greece's recently promoted Deputy Energy Minister. His portfolio spans energy and emissions, and he collaborates with policymakers across transport and industry—not just in Greece, but throughout the EU.Thank you to Nikos Tsafos for providing the graphs showing Greece's energy transition.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä.

Nikolaos Ntirlis is a Correspondence chess champion, and computer engineer who has become well known in the chess world for his vast opening expertise. Nikolaos is quite skilled at finding original opening ideas, and has grown popular through his books, and by highlighting new opening ideas on his Twitter/X account. The ideas Nikos suggests have often seen quick adoption by Grandmasters, and he has even seen moves he highlighted subsequently appear in the games of Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Girl. In fact, GM Giri wrote the Foreword to Nicolaos' newest book, the excellent Reimagining 1. E4. The book offers new ideas for White across many defenses to 1. E4, and explains opening concepts clearly without bombarding you with opening theory. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of Nikolaos' opening enthusiasm, how best to use engines, as well as which defenses to 1.e4 were most challenging to combat theoretically. Nikolaos is also an accomplished chess trainer who hasworked with the national team of Denmark. In our conversation, he offered some helpful chess improvement advice with a philosophical bent.

This episode is brought to you by the Resilience Assessment and hosted by Brad Hook. Order your copy of Brad's new book, Start With Values, now! The Guest: Dr. Nikos Patedakis is a philosopher and advocate for integrating wisdom traditions into modern life. With a focus on resilience, fulfillment, and philosophy's role in everyday experience, he brings insights into how ancient wisdom can address modern challenges. Dr. Patedakis encourages individuals to discover their core values, cultivate resilience, and embrace the process of self-discovery through philosophical practices. Connect with Dr. Nikos Patedakis: Visit his website: Dangerous Wisdom Find additional resources at dangerouswisdom.org/resilience Get Resilience Assessment for yourself or your team In this episode, Dr. Nikos Patedakis discusses "Resilience 4.0," a deeper, wisdom-centered form of resilience derived from ancient philosophy. He explains how wisdom traditions can guide individuals to live more authentically, fulfil their core values, and embrace resilience that transcends mere survival. The conversation covers the essence of mindfulness, the power of philosophical exploration, and actionable practices that help integrate purpose and awareness into daily life. Key takeaways: Resilience 4.0: True resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about achieving a state of wisdom-centered strength. This "Resilience 4.0" is rooted in ancient philosophy, offering a more profound, anti-fragile resilience that allows individuals to thrive amid life's challenges. Philosophy as Everyday Practice: Philosophy is not reserved for academics—everyone has their own approach to life. Dr. Patedakis emphasizes that we are all philosophers in how we navigate relationships, work, and values. The Importance of Psychological Flexibility: Drawing from wisdom traditions, psychological flexibility is crucial for resilience. It's about shifting perspectives, practicing compassion, and seeing beyond surface reactions. The Power of a Non-Dualistic Mindset: Rather than seeing ourselves as separate from our surroundings, we can foster resilience by embracing a non-dual perspective, acknowledging that we are both part of and connected to the world around us. Finding Fulfilment Through Purpose: Resilience is sustained by finding fulfilment and grounding actions in a "why" that aligns with core values and love. Dr. Patedakis encourages listeners to explore their "why" with depth, whether in personal growth, family, or greater good.
In this episode of Fearless Conversations we are joined by one of Dimitri's life-long friends, Nikos Psaltopoulos, to discuss the importance of vulnerability, empathy, and connection in a fast-paced and often demanding world. The conversation begins with a reflection on the hero's journey as a metaphor for our own lives. The three friends then explore the challenges of navigating bad leadership, the importance of finding moments of renewal and regeneration, and the courage it takes to break away from societal expectations. Nikos shares his personal experiences of transitioning from a corporate career to flying in and out of Athens for work, highlighting the challenges and rewards of creating a life that aligns with his values and priorities. He emphasises the significance of embracing vulnerability and showing up authentically, even when it feels lonely or uncertain. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the importance of cultural connection and the unique experiences of being third-culture kids. The three friends reflect on the power of storytelling and the importance of preserving and sharing our cultural heritage. Tank | Marchfirst | Mentorhub | Totheo Global | The Might Kitchen
Sebastian, Nikos, and Mike all came up in the car scene together in New Jersey. Through their passion for street racing, drifting, and cool cars captured in unique ways, this led them to chase their dreams in Los Angeles. Seb fell into becoming a curator of cars in music videos and other productions simply based on his passion. Having the desire to properly represent what we know is cool in the drift community is important to all of us and Seb and his team nail it. Mike has been creating visual works of art for a long time, and that led him to the west coast to work on some really cool music videos and other productions as a director of photography along with working with Seb on providing some of the coolest cars on the planet for projects. Nikos is a Toyota diehard and Auto Real Dream teammember who has built some very cool cars over the years. He took a leap and has now joined his east coast friends' journey out west. We sit down and talk about H2Oi, drifting influences, how long the shelf life of drifting in the forefront of pop culture will last, working as media at Rolling Loud in the early days, riding shotgun on the Kanjo Loop with Osaka's outlaw Civic street racers, and of course origin stories. Delighted to welcome Judy and Nikos to this, episode 23 of The Living Process. Our guests are well known for their achievement of editing Senses of Focusing Volume 1 and 2, two fantastic resources featuring new writing and diverse perspectives on Focusing and FOT. In this episode, we discuss critiques of focusing, what is coming next for them both, and positive developments they would like to see happen in therapy generally and in the Focusing world. In our 3-way conversation, we touch on the way that other approaches like the person-centered approach, Internal Family Systems, or Emotion Focus Therapy might incorporate focusing as a technique without fully integrating the fundamental importance of the experiential response, felt sensing, and carrying forward. We touched on different words and understandings for theories of the body, for eg the Ancient Greek terms like 'pathos' and the difference it offers if we allow ancient philosophy to be experienced freshly. We raised questions regarding what we can do to be better understood by other traditions and to translate some of our discoveries so that therapists from other orientations can think further with them. How do we in FOT deal with abrupt or cathartic changes? How do we engage with theories? How can we build bridges with other therapeutic communities and philosophies? What is our view of the person? Is there a spiritual context for our understanding of human being? Can we stay open to other ways of thinking so that they stay open to us? What is the future of FOT and therapy? How to keep developing FOT ourselves after the work of Gendlin… In response to this Judy and Nikos are planning a series of seminars or a symposium to welcome critical thinking and deeper exploration of Focusing, FOT and our relationship to other ways of understanding. Nikolaos Kypriotakis has studied Physics and has been trained in Person-Centred & Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy, Person-Centred Supervision and Children Focusing. He works as an FOT therapist and Focusing Trainer for the Hellenic Focusing Center and he is a Certifying Coordinator with The International Focusing Institute, New York. Together with Judy Moore he edited the collective work Senses of Focusing, Vol. I & II and has translated into Greek the book Focusing by Eugene T. Gendlin. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Εποχή-Epoché (Phenomenological Psychotherapies), for the issues n.1 to n.16. Judy Moore was originally trained in the classical Person-Centred Approach on the first PCA professional training in the UK. She taught on the postgraduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling at the University of East Anglia (UEA) throughout the 1990s before, thanks to the work of her colleague, Campbell Purton, finally discovering the extent of Gendlin's contribution to the development of Client-Centred/ Person-Centred Therapy. As Director of the Centre for Counselling Studies at UEA she worked with Campbell to develop Focusing and FOT training at UEA in the early 2000s. UEA also hosted several conferences, including colloquiums on Gendlin's philosophy. Judy is a Certifying Coordinator of The International Focusing Institute, working in private practice and as a freelance trainer and consultant. In 2021 she co-edited (with Nikolaos Kypriotakis) the two volumes of Senses of Focusing. https://sensesoffocusing.weebly.com Focusing book in Greek translation: https://bit.ly/3Y9BtwM #bodytherapy #focusing #gendlin #experientialpractice #somaticexperience #psychotherapy #counseling #psychology #personalgrowth #rodgers

If thin LLM wrappers could achieve superhuman forecasting performance, this would obsolete a lot of our work.] Widespread, misleading claims about AI forecasting Recently we have seen a number of papers - (Schoenegger et al., 2024, Halawi et al., 2024, Phan et al., 2024, Hsieh et al., 2024) - with claims that boil down to "we built an LLM-powered forecaster that rivals human forecasters or even shows superhuman performance". These papers do not communicate their results carefully enough, shaping public perception in inaccurate and misleading ways. Some examples of public discourse: Ethan Mollick (>200k followers) tweeted the following about the paper Wisdom of the Silicon Crowd: LLM Ensemble Prediction Capabilities Rival Human Crowd Accuracy by Schoenegger et al.: A post on Marginal Revolution with the title and abstract of the paper Approaching Human-Level Forecasting with Language Models by Halawi et al. elicits responses like "This is something that humans are notably terrible at, even if they're paid to do it. No surprise that LLMs can match us." "+1 The aggregate human success rate is a pretty low bar" A Twitter thread with >500k views on LLMs Are Superhuman Forecasters by Phan et al. claiming that "AI […] can predict the future at a superhuman level" had more than half a million views within two days of being published. The number of such papers on AI forecasting, and the vast amount of traffic on misleading claims, makes AI forecasting a uniquely misunderstood area of AI progress. And it's one that matters. What does human-level or superhuman forecasting mean? "Human-level" or "superhuman" is a hard-to-define concept. In an academic context, we need to work with a reasonable operationalization to compare the skill of an AI forecaster with that of humans. One reasonable and practical definition of a superhuman forecasting AI forecaster is The AI forecaster is able to consistently outperform the crowd forecast on a sufficiently large number of randomly selected questions on a high-quality forecasting platform.[1] (For a human-level forecaster, just replace "outperform" with "performs on par with".) Except for Halawi et al., the papers had a tendency to operationalize human-level or superhuman forecasting in ways falling short of that standard. Some issues we saw were: Looking at average/random instead of aggregate or top performance (for superhuman claims) Looking at only at a small number of questions Choosing a (probably) relatively easy target (i.e. Manifold) Red flags for claims to (super)human AI forecasting accuracy Our experience suggests there are a number of things that can go wrong when building AI forecasting systems, including: 1. Failing to find up-to-date information on the questions. It's inconceivable on most questions that forecasts can be good without basic information. Imagine trying to forecast the US presidential election without knowing that Biden dropped out. 2. Drawing on up-to-date, but low-quality information. Ample experience shows low quality information confuses LLMs even more than it confuses humans. Imagine forecasting election outcomes with biased polling data. Or, worse, imagine forecasting OpenAI revenue based on claims like > The number of ChatGPT Plus subscribers is estimated between 230,000-250,000 as of October 2023. without realising that this mixing up ChatGPT vs ChatGPT mobile. 3. In a recent interview I did with Nikos on The Nikos Show, we discussed quite a few interesting preparedness topics, including what it might be like to live in a Mad Max-type world and what it would take to even get to that point. It was a good conversation, and I wanted to replay it for my Survivalist Prepper audience. We also covered several other things, including groups and communities, how gangs might form, and what the future might bring. While a complete breakdown of society is unlikely, it is not impossible. Even if a scenario like this never plays out, it's good to think about how things might unfold in situations like these to help us prepare for the more likely possibilities. Greece is the birthplace of democracy. But how free is Greece's media? Nikos Papanikolaou travels to his home town, Athens, to speak to journalists who have had their phones hacked by an advanced new spyware, been sued for defamation, and been under surveillance by the Greek national intelligence agency. In the south of the city he visits the widow of the an investigative journalist – murdered just outside their family home. Nikos also hears from Members of the European Parliament – those who want the EU to withhold funds until Greece improves the position for journalists – and those outraged by the idea that Greece does not already have a free media. Presented by Nikos Papanikolaou Produced by Giles Edwards.
