Today I'm joined by Christine Orlowicz, a dedicated age-group triathlete from Fort Myers, Florida, who's been having an exceptional race season. Christine joined us late at night to share her journey, challenges, and success in mastering her nutrition plan, all while balancing a demanding career as a physician. Originally a runner, Christine entered the world of triathlon almost three years ago, with her first race being in December 2021. She started incorporating swimming and biking into her training routine, and triathlon was a natural progression from there. One of the biggest things Christine loves about this sport is the community, which she's found a lot more welcoming and supportive than for other sports she's been a part of. From the onset, Christine recognised the importance of proper nutrition in her triathlon journey. She joined the Triathlon Nutrition Academy well before hitting her first 70.3 race and this has paid off majorly. While many athletes try to figure out nutrition through trial and error or ignore it altogether, Christine opted for a structured approach, seeking guidance and information to avoid race-day disasters. She compared it to seeking out a textbook for a medical condition: why struggle through incorrect methods when you can get information from a reliable source? Christine recently participated in Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin, using the event as a preparatory race for her upcoming full Ironman. Despite the hilly terrain, she executed her nutrition plan flawlessly, resulting in her personal best run and confirming the effectiveness of her preparation. By carefully planning her nutrition intake even during the race, Christine avoided any gastrointestinal issues that could have ruined her run. Key Takeaways from her Experience Consistent Planning: Planning her meals and snacks in advance, Christine tweaked her intake based on training intensity and availability at race locations. Practice and Repetition: She regularly practiced her carb-loading strategy, ensuring she was comfortable with the quantities and types of food she would consume. Listening to Your Body: Christine continuously monitored her body's responses, refining her approach based on real-time feedback. Now, as Christine looks to her first full Ironman, she remains committed to her tried-and-tested nutrition plan. In her final training weeks, she'll be sticking to the exact products and timings she plans to use on race day, ensuring there are no surprises. She's also cautious about any deviations from her plan, knowing that the controlled environment and familiarity of products will be key to her success. With two long bike rides left before her big race, Christine is focused on perfecting every detail. I'll be cheering Christine on as she races in Ironman Florida, and I'm hoping to get her back on for a race report. In the meantime, remember that your nutrition can make or break your race day. Don't wait to get it right – start now and set yourself up for long-term success. Have you ever wondered about the life of a professional triathlete? In this podcast series, we interview current and retired QT2 Systems Professional Triathletes, exploring the path to earning (and maintaining) a pro license, the nuts and bolts of training and racing, and the ups and downs along the way. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 8 features Tim Snow. Tim has had a long and storied triathlon career. He participated in his first triathlon in 1998, and immediately caught the bug. Over the next couple of years, he raced as often as he could, including twice on some weekends. He started having success in these races, and in 2000, met the qualifications for a pro card. Motivated in part by the opportunity to race in sold out IRONMAN Florida, he decided to to take the next step and enter the pro world. Over the next thirteen years, Tim would go on to race dozens of IRONMAN races as well as many other shorter events. In 2013, he retired as a pro, but continued to race as an age grouper - in triathlon, as well as running and cycling events. Over the years, Tim also has coached many professional triathletes. In this podcast, he discusses the opportunities available to professional athletes, but also the pressures they experience. Listen in as Tim talks motivations, expectations, stressors and rewards. “I don't think I would've been inspired to leave and to go all in if I didn't have this thing looming over me that I had to take care of, that I had to pay off, which was that student loan debt and when I decided to quit and to go in all in on myself to partner with my dad, that was just one option. The other option was faking my death and moving to South America…It was definitely a joke, but I spent some late nights thinking about that. I thought about joining the Navy - my dad was in the Navy - taking my degree and joining the officer Commission school, which wouldn't have been a bad option, but it wasn't me.It wasn't what I wanted to do, you know, I would've just been doing that to pay off debt. I would've been not living my dream. Right? It was right after my second bike got stolen from my apartment and I was like, screw this. I'm done. I'm tired of getting my bike stolen, living in these big cities and yeah, you know, I want to go home. I called him [my Dad] and I said, “Hey, I wanna come home and partner with you. And, he tried to talk me out of it…”Episode #127 of The Hope Initiative with Brandon Littrell.A great conversation with fellow Tribal Training athlete, Ironman, husband and father of four, Brand Littrell.Twitter has been a great source of quality humans for me in the past 14 months or so, and Brandon is no exception. Endurance News: WORLD CHAMPIONS, BRAVE DISPLAYS AND RECORD BREAKING CROWDS: 5 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM ARENA GAMES TRIATHLON LONDON Last week mentioned – American golden couple Chase McQueen and Gina Sereno to complete in the Arena Games Triathlon in London. It was a fast, frenetic and entirely unpredictable conclusion to the 2023 Arena Games Triathlon powered by Zwift World Championship Series. From stellar performances to shocks and twists and turns, the race at the sold out London Aquatics Centre had it all. Here we take a look at five things we learned from the final of Arena Games Triathlon. LINN ON TOP OF THE WORLD Sophie Linn sparkled in the opening event in Montreal but ultimately faded just a little to finish behind Gina Sereno. However, a fire had clearly been lit as she realised this format could be one to really suit her. The Australian initially wasn't going to come to London, such was her lack of confidence to secure a World Championship title, but after giving it some thought she committed – and then some. Arena Games Triathlon, Grand Final, London, Uk, 2023, Linn put in a significant training block to give herself the best chance of success, and really delivered on the day. She was not only to eventually take the world title, but made a race that could have been dominated by Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand ultra competitive. Linn may not have started the Series as any kind of favourite, but is now an official World Champion. HENRI'S COMEBACK COMPLETE Arena Games Triathlon has really been Henri Schoeman's redemption story. Three years of injury and illness have dogged a man so used to success at the very highest level of the sport. His road to recovery has been bumpy, and hugely emotional. There was a time he thought he may never get the chance to race again. Arena Games Triathlon, London, Uk, 2023 But Schoeman stuck in there, even during the dark moments, and has got his reward. He really went the hard years for it too, racing all three events even when mathematically he didn't need to. But this was always about more than racing, it was about proving to himself he can have a second coming in the sport. And how he did that. BETH IS A BOSS Beth Potter may not have raced enough Arena Games events this year to be able to defend her title, but she showed her class in smashing the London event, and in front of a baying British crowd. Potter has achieved so much in Arena Games racing, but she had never actually beaten Cassandre Beaugrand when the pair have raced together. She put that right in emphatic style with a convincing victory. GUSTAV'S CHAMPION MENTALITY They say a champion never quits. Gustav Iden proved why he already has some of the biggest titles in the sport in his collection by proving what it takes to be the best. The weekend presented him with so many challenges, A delayed flight and a missed briefing saw him start his heat – the so-called ‘Heat of Death' – with a five second penalty before he had even stepped on the race course. He pushed hard but ultimately was in the repechage. He was – in Arena Games terms – a mile back coming out of the swim in Stage 2 and his exit before even making the finals looked all but assured. However, he dug in, pushed himself to the absolute limit and was ready as soon as there was a sign of weakness to pounce. After such efforts to get to the final there was a suspicion he could come last, but that was proved to be nonsense as she actually got himself to fifth by the end of the final. A remarkable performance, that displayed a quite remarkable mentality. ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE The London Aquatics Centre and the British crowd ensured an incredible day for triathlon. The venue was sold out, with a record 2,000 fans in attendance. The atmosphere was loud and happy, and the athlete thrived on it. Fans turned up to support Para Triathlon as well and were treated to some stunning performances, including a virtuoso display from Grace Norman. The venue is fast establishing itself as the pinnacle of Arena Games, but with more fans than ever packing in for the events across the Series, it is clear that triathlon is growing. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/08/super-league-triathlon-arena-games-behind-scenes-triathlon.html IRONMAN Brings New Voices to Call in Finishers TAMPA, Fla. (April 13, 2023) – The list of voices calling athletes across IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® finish lines will be expanding in 2023 to include some familiar voices as well as new ones. As the IRONMAN community bids farewell to Mike Reilly, the most famous voice in the sport of triathlon who has retired following a storied career spanning 33 years, athletes can expect to hear a variety of different voices greeting them at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events over the coming year. In addition, more women announcers will be picking up a microphone at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events in 2023, including for the first time ever, a fully female announcing crew calling athletes in at the 2023 IRONMAN Maryland triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series on Sept. 16, 2023. “There's nothing quite like those final moments before an athlete crosses an IRONMAN finish line,” said Shane Facteau, Chief Operating Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “Our athletes work for months, and sometimes even years, to hear the illustrious words, ‘You are an IRONMAN!' made famous by our beloved Mike Reilly. While we will all miss Mike, we are proud to bring a diverse cast of emcees to our events in 2023 and we know our athletes are keen to meet these announcers as they help enhance their race day experience.” Mike Reilly also shared his appreciation for the craft and the impact this crop of race announcers can have as they encourage athletes at events. “For over 30 years, it has been an incredible honor to support IRONMAN athletes as they cross finish lines worldwide,” said Reilly who is also in the IRONMAN Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. “I have no doubt that the dynamic and diverse team of announcers assembled will continue to uphold the legacy of IRONMAN and create unforgettable experiences for competitors and spectators. When you hear those powerful and life changing words, ‘You are an IRONMAN' at your next finish line, know that they are delivered with passion and a deep commitment to your success.” Below are many of the iconic voices and new announcers that athletes can expect to see and hear at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events this year. Americas Jill Blankenburg – Jill is now a seven-time IRONMAN finisher, beginning in 2009 when she completed IRONMAN Florida and since then has gone on to cross IRONMAN finish lines in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Lake Placid, N.Y.; Whistler B.C. Canada; Louisville, Kentucky; Cozumel, Mexico and Panama City Beach, Florida for a second time in 2019. Jill is no stranger to the microphone – she's been a radio DJ, recorded lead and backing vocals for various music projects and fronted a rock and roll band for many years. Jill was delighted for the opportunity to combine her experience on the mic and her passion for triathlon when she began announcing multisport races in 2016 – and she's often called upon to sing the National Anthem at her events. Jill joined IRONMAN's announcing team in 2022 is proud to be one of the new female voices on the IRONMAN stage. Otton Bernardelli – In 2011, during a 10k race, the announcer failed to show up, and Otton had to step up to the microphone to lead 5,000 athletes in the event. This experience made him realize that he wanted to pursue a career in sports announcing. Four years later, in 2015, he received his first opportunity to announce an IRONMAN 70.3 event. Since then, he has worked alongside Dave Ragsdale and Tony Lugo at IRONMAN 70.3 Miami in 2017, and proudly shared the microphone with William Bonder at all IRONMAN 70.3 and full-distance IRONMAN events in Brazil for the past 7 years. William Bonder – Javier Clavelo Nick Edwards Carissa Galloway . She has also been one of the most recent additions to the world championship announcing team and will help call athletes in at the women's IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i. Eric Gilsenan – Many have heard Eric at IRONMAN Village expos during past world championship events, and he will expand his role at the VinFast IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship events in 2023. Erick González Velázquez – Originally from Mexico City, Erick has been the voice of IRONMAN in Mexico. Two of his passions outside of being an announcer are playing the guitar and heading out every morning for a run with his Husky, Cookie. Dave Kappas Rachel Kazez Andrea Kooiman Dave Latourete Tony Lugo Sara McLarty – Sara McLarty has been racing triathlons since she was a child. She enjoyed a successful 15-year professional career representing the United States at 13 world championships in seven different sports and raced on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. After retiring in 2015, she transitioned into coaching and athlete support with the USA Triathlon elite squad, culminating with a trip to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Today, her passion is with the SLAP Tri Team #SLAPPERS in Central Florida helping adult, youth and junior high-performance athletes achieve their goals and dreams! Dave Ragsdale – Dave has been around the Endurance Industry long enough to remember grabbing a popsicle stick at the finish line of a college cross country meet. After a stint in corporate sales in New York City, he moved to South Florida with a buddy so that they could train year-round for the then emerging sport of triathlon. Since then, he's been in the Event Management business, sold media for Florida Sports Magazine, a precursor to Competitor Magazine and Rock ‘n Roll Running Series and headed up a 6-person sales team with The IRONMAN Group. Currently, Dave helps connect brands and events in the active lifestyle space. Dave's time on the microphone dates back to his earliest days in the event management business, when he realized that holding a microphone and talking for hours was a lot easier than moving cones or barricades. Thankfully, he had the skill needed to succeed in that spot and in his more than 20 years as an announcer, he figures to have greeted close to 500,000 athletes to the line. Born in Minneapolis, Dave grew up in Pleasantville, NY was educated at Colgate University. He and his wife, Molly, live in Juno Beach, Florida. Colleen Rue Tom Ziebart Mental Mastery With Mark Allen Week 7: Swim Speed Reset Six-time Ironman World Champion shares what he calls the "ultimate race-prep drill" to find a new physical and mental gear in the swim. APRIL 10, 2023 MARK ALLEN As a triathlete, you likely do a ton of steady-state swimming, and not a lot of top-end swimming. That's good for building endurance, but as you head into race season, it's good to reset your body's gauge of what it can do at a fast speed – physically and mentally. That's why this week's installment of our nine-week Mental Mastery series will take you to the pool for a fast and furious workout. Going fast presents perhaps the biggest challenge to keeping your three pillars of Mental Mastery dialed in and active. Hard efforts can be uncomfortable, and physical discomfort can be a distraction to staying locked into a champion's Mental Mastery focus. This swim workout will blend physical and mental skills to ensure you get the hang of this demanding aspect of athletics. These types of sets were extremely important for me to do from time to time even when I was getting ready for an Ironman. The intensity of short and fast is like a concentrated form of what takes place over a much longer period of time in a race. This type of set also reinforced my ability to do the ultimate athletic race prep multitask, which was to go fast but to also stay focused on economy of motion, on keeping my mental chatter to as close to zero as possible, and to resetting my fast gauge. Sometimes, just thinking about a hard workout can be a mental roadblock. I would always have to rein in my anxiety and the anticipation of how the set would feel, and just launch into doing it. Remember: It's always so much easier to deal with it while doing the set, than it is to let your mind spiral about what-ifs. The what-ifs in your head are almost always worse than how it actually turns out in real life. Before we get to the workout and the Mental Mastery drills, let me remind you again what the three pillars of mental mastery are: Body Awareness- This is developing the ability to be aware of how your body is moving, especially when you are fatiguing or going at a very fast pace or high-power output. Internal Dialogue- This is being aware of when chatter is getting in the way of performance and developing the ability to change the channel quickly to a space that supports your physical efforts rather than weakening them. Mental Race Prep- This is remembering what the day-to-day work is going toward and using that vision to propel you to your personal best in your pursuit of the extraordinary. What's New in the 303: How do you know when it's time to replace your helmet? 303 Endurance | How do you know when it's time to replace your helmet? By: A.V. Schmit Well, there is one obvious reason why you should replace your helmet — A crash. No matter the severity, a crash indicates a mandatory helmet replacement. It makes sense, when you consider all bike helmets are single-use pieces of safety equipment. A compressed foam impact-absorption area can often be invisible from the outside. Photo: Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. They are not designed, nor intended to absorb the energy from multiple impacts. Even in what appears to be a minor impact, the integrity of the internal structures within the helmet may be compromised and be unable to perform when called upon in a supplemental impact. But there is good news, well, kind of. Many helmet manufacturers offer a discount to replace a crash-damaged helmet. Giro offers a 30% discount as a crash-replacement incentive. To access the discount, you can call their 1-800 number or use an online form on their website. Other circumstances, like accidentally leaving your helmet in an excessively hot car or truck, cause not so obvious reasons to replace your helmet. Extremely high temperatures, such as those experienced in the southern United States in the summer months, can create temperatures that can damage the impact absorbing foam that make up many modern road and mountain bike helmets. “Excessive heat can damage your helmet. For example, in direct sunlight a dark gear bag, the interior of a car, or an automobile trunk can get hot enough to cause heat damage (damaged helmets will appear to have uneven or bubbly surfaces).” Bell Helmets FAQ Excessive heat, exposure to caustic chemicals, and impacts both on and off the bike, are all circumstances that can necessitate replacing your bike helmet. So, you have not crashed your helmet or let it cook in a hot car, how do you know if you should replace it? “We encourage riders to replace their helmet at least every 3 to 5 years,” said Tara L. Giro Consumer Services Representative. “At Giro, our focus is safety. With the advances in safety technology, we feel that is an appropriate range for the usable life of a helmet, barring a crash.” UV, Ultra Violet, light can degrade a helmet's polycarbonate shell, but this takes an extended period of time out in the sunlight to occur. Most helmet shells incorporate a chemical UV inhibitor in the material that resists UV damage. Even with that, an extended period of time in the sun or high-altitude exposures can damage the shell of the helmet, as evidenced by fading color or cracks in the shell. If you observe either of these situations, it's time to replace your helmet. So that should give you some general guidelines as to what can damage your helmet, and when it makes sense to replace it. If you are unsure about the condition of your helmet, most manufacturers have a 1-800 number listed on their website where you can seek additional advice. And… when you do get a new helmet, mark the month and year on the interior with a permanent marker somewhere so you know when you put it into service. Nick Modrzejewski is a name you'll remember - perhaps have difficulty pronouncing (MA-JE-SKI) - but memorable indeed!Nick resides in Champaign, Illinois, is husband to Amy, father to two, a Pastor at Illini Life, a triathlon coach at SuperFly Coaching, and a competitive age group triathlete. He has completed Ironman Florida FIVE times with finishes in the top 10 of his age group each time. His best finish at Ironman Florida was in 2021 where he finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group- this after an incredible 1st place age group finish at Wisconsin in 2021 where he secured his spot to Ironman World Championships in Kona this past October 2022.The Ironman Florida race has been a highlight race for Nick - one he likes to finish his season with. It's warm, flat, and fast! His race in 2022 may not have been all he hoped for, but with a finishing time of 9:49, it's one to be proud of - especially considering how he felt on race day, just coming off of Kona a few weeks prior, and a new baby at home! If you're considering racing this course you'll learn a lot from his Nick's experiences over the years. One thing you cannot deny - Nick has a true love and passion for the sport of triathlon... "a good day is getting to swim, bike, and run." Simple as that. He shares how the pressures of a big goal can and DO weigh him (us) down; rather success is found when we let those expectations go and show up as our very best that we have to give on race day.Follow Nick's training and racing on Strava, or reach out via Super Fly Coaching.Support the show Follow Mission Kona Podcast hosted by Mike & Michelle Payne: · Instagram missionkonapodcast · Do you know an age group athlete who has a great story to share? IRONMAN Arizona 2022: Preview, start times and how to watch LIVE 14 Nov 2022 by John Levison Last week we highlighted our top five races for the remainder of 2022, and the first event on that list comes up on Sunday, the Biostarks IRONMAN Arizona. Start time and how to watch live The Pro Men will kick-off their day with the 2.4-mile, single-loop swim in Salt River, Tempe, at 0640 local time, with the Pro Women starting five minutes later at 0645. With Arizona on Mountain Standard Time, that means global race start times of: 1340 UK / 1440 CET / 0840 Eastern / 0540 Pacific. The event will benefit from full live broadcast coverage, the final race of the 2022 IRONMAN long-distance season to be featured on their IRONMAN Now platforms via Facebook Watch and YouTube – and also embedded on this preview. As always, the ever reliable IRONMAN Tracker is the perfect data addition to support your viewing. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?! IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again. Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He's seemingly at home racing in the U.S., too. Joe Skipper 2022 photo credit IRONMAN Wales [Photo credit: IRONMAN Wales] The USA's Sam Long made plenty of headlines at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but with that very contentious penalty on the bike, not the sort that he wanted. Winner in Gdynia, strong at the Collins Cup and a podium at the PTO US Open, the form is there – hopefully we'll get to see it on Sunday. Sam Long St George photo credit Tom Pennington Getty Images for IRONMAN Sam Long at St George [Photo credit Tom Pennington/Getty Images for IRONMAN] The full-distance debut of Ben Kanute will be of particular interest, especially having turned around what was a mid-season of relatively under-whelming results by his standards. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day. Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat. You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too. Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). Winner of three IRONMAN titles since then – and having finished fourth in St George, ninth in Kona this year – she will rightly start as favourite. skye-moench-kona-2022-bike (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images for IRONMAN) Illness ruined her Kona prospects, but Sarah True still has the class to be a factor in Arizona. A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying. Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water. Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. Jen Annett (CAN) has taken second place this year at both IRONMAN Des Moines and IRONMAN Mont Tremblant, and so is another athlete sure to be chasing the podium positions in the late stages. You can find the full start list here. Recent IRONMAN Arizona Pro winners 2019: Sara Crowley (AUS) – Pro women only race 2018: Eneko Llanos (ESP) / Heather Jackson (USA) 2017: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Kaisa Sali (FIN) 2016: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) 2015: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) Prize Money: What's on the line? The prize purse on offer this weekend is $100,000 – with each of the winners collecting a $15,000 share of that total. In addition to money, there will be a total of four qualifying slots (two MPRO* / two FPRO) for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii, 12 and 14 October 2023. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance. (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales). The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000 Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking. The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event. Her strength and perseverance shined through in her most recent race at the 2022 Kona Ironman World Championship where she finished in under 11 hours (racing WITH a stress fracture)! I think we can all agree she got a BOOST of energy when she got ice on the course from none other than Jan Frodeno!Shyanne is truly talented across all 3 disciplines, but also values strength training and mobility in her workout regimen. She lives a busy life, and does it with true grace! She credits consistency to much of her success.Keep an eye on Shyanne - she's a fighter!5:20 - "I bought a used road bike for like, $250 or something like that, in the summer of 2018, and just kind of fell in love with the sport from there."12:13 - "I don't feel like I can ever top that as far as the feeling of it, because, the first one, I had no pressure, no expectations."31:05 - "[I was] excited to get off the bike and be on my own two feet, and I was a little nervous. I just don't even know if my body is going to hold up for this long." 31:54 - "...and I look up and there's Jan Frodeno handing out water. And I'm like 'Can I get that water from you?' and he's like, yeah... so that was definitely a highlight of my race."39:15 - "...you have to stay consistent. In this episode, we hear from 2X Ironman Finisher, Jon Welty. Jon is married, recently transitioned from being a collegiate cross-country and track and field coach to a corporate recruiter and is currently training for Ironman Florida. Jon lives in St. Louis, MO with his wife and since our recording have celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary.Jon provides some details about his athletic background starting in high school; he played football, basketball and ran track. He explains that he discovered that his natural ability was running and when it came time to decide where to continue his education, he choose Manmouth College for a few reasons.Jon reveals that his inspiration for looking at the sport of triathlon stems from a childhood memory. We talk about how he followed the “traditional” path from Sprint distance to full Ironman and Jon points out another reason I should race a local Olympic distance race this summer. When talking about his experiences at Ironman Boulder and Ironman Couer d'Alene, Jon admits that he learned lot from both races. He talks about the change in his nutrition plan. Taking in what he can by himself, Jon has decided to use services of a coach while training for his next race.Jon provides a perfect analogy of how a coach can help you correct the things we can't see. We talk about what made he choose Couer d'Alene as his 2nd race. He also talks us through what drew his to choose Ironman Florida as his next race. We talk about some of the things that Jon's coach has him focused on during this time.We talk about Jon's thoughts on his potential if all things go well. We discuss what at the time of the recording was the upcoming Sub 7-hour project and I acknowledge a previous guest's accomplishment that I didn't fully appreciate at the time of the original recording.Jon shares some fantastic final thoughts, and we agree that it's ok to not be ok sometimes.

It's beginner's season. Well, actually it's always beginner season for us because there is always a race to learn to TRI. For the month of June, we will highlight beginners as they share their stories. It's the modern-day race report if you digg. This week's featured beginners are: Katie G. Matthews and Kayla Edwards. Katie G. Matthews knows that if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and tri again, thanks to Aaliyah for making those lyrics popular. First, Katie was encouraged by her Life Coach to try a tri. Then, she learned about Chris Nikic's amazing Ironman Florida finish. This one-two punch inspired Katie to uplevel (or level up?) her fitness lifestyle. Yup, she's been bit by the Tri Bug! But before she can confidently tri… she has to secure her Ph.D. (you have to listen to get it!) Kayla Edwards has found the will to tri from the power of mentorship, youtube, and sheer determination! At 14 years old, Kayla isn't letting any barrier stop her. Learning how to swim just 9 months before her first race, taking she took the initiative to find a training plan and train herself. Her “Big Brother Big Sister Mentor” loaned her a bike, and the doors have opened to a future of possibilities to tri and tri some more. When we tri beginner's luck, there are always lessons to to learn. Kayla's had to learn about a USAT rule that leveled up her age. Don't forget to leave a review, share it with your friends, and Follow Tri Beginner's luck on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. And send any questions or feedback you have to imreadyto@tribeginnersluck.com. Cheers to defying the odds and being trailblazers, Let's Tri this!

Kat Matthews Rises to the SUB8 Challenge Sydney, Australia – 13th April, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ –European champion Kat Matthews has signed on to the Pho3nix Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift. The third-fastest British female long-distance triathlete and national time trial cycling champion is the newest contender for the audacious attempt to race the full distance of triathlon in under eight hours. After Ironman 70.3 world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay was ruled out of Sub8 due to a hip bone fracture, Matthews was quick to rise to the occasion and take on the challenge of swimming 3.8 kilometers, cycling 180 kilometers, and running 42 kilometers faster than anyone ever before. Though the attempt will be aided by a team of pacemakers and cutting-edge technology and logistics, in the end it will still be a triumph of physiological preparedness and mental acuity for any athlete to go under the mark. “I'm a relative newbie to the sport and the iron distance is certainly one where experience is of high benefit. Most would assume I would not be a contender and that achieving this would be impossible,” Matthews admits. “However, as soon as I heard of the attempt, I wanted to be involved. It sparked my interest intellectually as well as physically. I see my sporting endeavours as a case study for constant learning and improvement. I have yet to find a plateau in my physical improvement in any area, and this evolution keeps me right at the edge of passion and motivation for absolute excellence.” As an Army physiotherapist, Matthews pursued a longtime interest in the human body and health helping injured soldiers get back to fighting fitness. It was in that environment she began exploring triathlon, going from grassroots sprints to winning middle distance races outright as an amateur to earn her pro card. With a slew of wins and notable performances in the past three years including winning Ironman Florida to set the third-fastest full distance time set by a British female, topping Ironman UK, and dominating this year's Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote, Matthews has put the world on notice. Now only seven years after she first began doing triathlons, she puts herself on an even steeper trajectory to sporting greatness lining up to race against dual Olympic medallist Nicola Spirig. Matthews says, “Nicola's accolades in the sport over the last 25 years puts her as a legitimate candidate as the sport's Greatest Of All Time across both male and female athletes. To race against Nicola here is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I hope to be a worthy contender.” Pho3nix Foundation board member and MANA Global CEO Chris McCormack says, “Kat is a world-class athlete I've watched with much interest over the past few years. Getting herself and her ‘tribe' of pacemakers together in such a short time frame is no mean feat, but she came ready and prepared. With Kat's cerebral and disciplined approach to the sport I'm excited to see how she will tackle the puzzle that is Sub8 and the new race strategy she will bring in her pursuit to be the first to Defy the Impossible.” Regarding Charles-Barclay's further role, McCormack clarifies, “Lucy is still very much part of the team and having her still on board within our global commentary team and on the ground on race day brings a new lens to this groundbreaking attempt. By Brian Weiss, Bike Law Colorado Finally, the much sought after common sense traffic law for bicyclists is coming to Colorado in 2022, likely July 1st. After the Governor Polis signs the law and the Safety Stop becomes effective, anyone who rides a bicycle or scooter on public roads will not have to lose momentum due to stop signs or wait as long at red lights. So what difference will the Colorado Safety Stop make? Soon riders will “legally” not have to completely stop at stop signs when there is no traffic present. Red lights that would not change for a bike rider who followed the law and as a result the rider waited and waited – will be a past memory. People who were pulled over by police and ticketed for what they may have thought was a legal activity on a bicycle, can now breathe a sigh of relief. Jack Todd (Bicycle Colorado) Andy Kerr, Senator Kevin Priola, Piep van Heuven (Bicycle Colorado), Brian Weiss After about seven years of trying, Colorado's House and Senate finally passed the State-wide Safety Stop bill (HB22-1028), which is based on the Idaho Stop Law, in 2022. The bill actually had true bipartisan support this year. In fact, it passed the Colorado House 44-20 and passed the Colorado Senate 25-8. The effective date of this law taking effect will be after the Governor signs it and the required waiting period because the new law is needed for our “immediate safety.” An explanation of the practical changes of the Colorado Safety Stop for a bike rider are as follows: When approaching a stop sign, if it is safe to proceed only after slowing to a reasonable speed of 10 miles per hour or less, yielding the right-of-way to any traffic or pedestrian in or approaching the intersection, and after yielding, then the bike riders can continue through the intersection without stopping; and When approaching an illuminated red traffic control signal or “red light,” the person on a bicycle must first stop completely at the intersection and yield to all other traffic and pedestrians and only when traffic clears and it is safe, may the rider proceed straight or make a right turn through the intersection or, subject to specified conditions, make a left turn onto a one-way street only. It should be noted that the bill evolved into the current version in several steps. This law will not only apply to people who ride bicycles but is now flexible enough to cover current and future forms of transportation called “Low Speed Conveyances” which would include electric scooters, one-wheels, e-bikes, and electric skateboards. Also there were several parts added to the text of the bill. One critical revision is that the new law will only apply to bicyclists age 15 and over. However, for bicyclists, or low speed conveyance riders, under age 15 who are with a parent or legal guardian they can also keep their momentum and benefit from this new law. This is a change from the current law which was basically an opt-in decision by the city or county to make a Safety Stop the rule of that area. As expected, when rules for bike riders changed from town to town there was confusion. When both bike riders and drivers of motor vehicles understand the laws, they are easier to follow and there is less conflict between road users. I say that this law was a long time coming from a personal note, as I have advocated for the Idaho Stop for over 8 years for Bike Law, Team Evergreen Cycling and myself as a person who bikes all over Colorado. While I knew that some mountain towns, like Breckenridge, Aspen, and Summit County, had a successful safety stop local ordinance in place for years before the Colorado Legislature considered changing the Traffic Code to make this a statewide law, I also was aware of the Denver Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee in 2013 which shared a white paper explaining how traffic flows and bicycle commuters would benefit from a safety stop ordinance in Denver. I testified at the Senate Committee hearings for two years, but the bill did not leave the Transportation Committee. However, there was a glimmer of hope in 2018 for passing a version of the Idaho Stop Law. In 2018 there were enough votes in the Colorado Legislature to pass a watered-down model of the bill which allowed the bike-friendly cities and counties to “opt-in” to a regulatory framework to allow bicycles more freedom at intersections, but I saw this as a weak compromise law. Fortunately, it did serve as a step toward the larger objective, and it energized the bicycling community to keep trying. In the meantime, Colorado was bypassed by other states. Arkansas, Delaware, Oregon Washington, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah all passed statewide safety stop laws. Those other states provided data that was helpful in ultimately passing Colorado's safety stop bill. For example, I explained to the Colorado Senate transportation Committee that crashes between bicycle riders and motor vehicles dropped 23% at intersections with stop signs over a 30-month period in Delaware. I find that statistics like this resonate well with both legislators and jurors alike. The lack of relevant statistics from other states may have been a reason that the law passing in Colorado was previously unsuccessful. While working to pass the Colorado Safety Stop, there were a lot of different people involved with varying viewpoints. Of course, Bicycle Colorado was a driving force behind this law as it benefits bicycle riders across the State. Andy Kerr, current Jefferson County Commissioner, former Colorado State Senator, and former Colorado State House of Representatives stewarded this bill for about 8 years and made it his personal mission when he was a Colorado legislator. Note, Andy commuted by bicycle when he was the Colorado State Senator and House Member for my district. After I gave my own testimony about statistics, safety, and legal issues, I was moved by the testimony from fellow cyclists. In particular, I recall Marcus Robinson's testimony who explained that he, as a black man riding an expensive road bicycle, was emotionally devasted after he was pulled over by the police who claimed he failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and the police accused him of stealing the bicycle that he was riding. Marcus explained that no minority should be targeted by law enforcement, and he advocated for equality in cycling. I learned that after the stressful police accusation and racial unrest in 2020, Marcus Robinson and Neal Henderson started Ride for Racial Justice, a non-profit in Denver which advocates for Diversity, Education, Leadership & Community: https://www.rideforracialjustice.org/our-vision. This Safety Stop bill will unify bike laws across Colorado, and make the roads safer for people of color at the same time. In the episode we hear from Chris Tubbs who is a husband, father and has a PhD in Biochemistry. If that wasn't enough, Chris also invests in real estate, has started a charity walk that grew to the point he had to enlist help to manage it and is a Prostate Cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with cancer, Chris started journaling as a way to document his thoughts and emotions. After Chris shared his journal with a few close friends they encouraged him to transition to blogging so that he could share his experience publicly in the hopes that someone who might be facing a similar situation would find comfort in the knowledge they aren't only facing adversity.Chris shares that during his junior and senior years of high school in Los Angeles, CA he was ranked in the Top 25 swimmers in the city. He then took a 25 year hiatus before finding Triathlon in his mid-40s. We spend a few minutes talking about family, high school swimming, and Chris sets me straight on how long it takes to get a PhD. I ask Chris if Ironman would allow my idea on how to get faster in the pool by getting cosmetic surgery. We talk about Chris' blog journeyto140. Chris reminds us of the importance of documenting our progress as most progress comes in small incremental steps that are more obvious when viewed over a longer period of time. Chris a 2X Ironman Finisher with both of his races being at Ironman Florida. Chris explains how he came to race Florida twice through a series of deferrals and needing time for his body to recover. Being completely open about all things, Chris shares that he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and had a complete Prostatectomy just weeks after completing Ironman Florida in 2020. Chris acknowledges that considers himself lucky as his Cancer was initially discovered through a blood test when he went in for a “regular” physical.Because Chris raced Ironman Florida in back to back years, I take to opportunity to ask him to compare the differences from one year to the next. Chris walks me through his experience this year on the swim. At one point he thought he might have been swept out to sea as he lost sight of all the buoys and the pier that the swim course follows. Chris is very honest about how his body is still recovering from surgery and spent more time than intended off the bike. Because of his experience with the change in weather the days leading into race weekend, I agree to pack a light jacket regardless of the venue moving forward. After getting distracted talking about Ironman 70.3 Texas, Chris explains how he had planned to attack the run course this year with a much different plan than in 2020. Chris' plan to run at a slower pace while walking the Aid Stations got him to mile 18 but soon found himself walking more than running. Luckily for Chris, another athlete whom he had run with earlier in the day, provided the encouragement that was needed to finish strong. We discuss the benefits of talking to others on the run course. Chris admits he enjoys the connection he is able to make through the community that is triathlon. Because I follow Chris on Instagram, I know that he has added Yoga to his workout routine, so I put him on the spot and ask him to share his favorite yoga pose. Because the Warrior pose is what gives him the most challenge, Chris list it as his favorite at this moment. We agree that adding yoga to your triathlon training is key to developing core strength. We talk about Chris' customized QR tri bike, and I ask him his thoughts on those athletes that ride a non-traditional bike to increase the difficulty of the race. We laugh at the notion of someone riding a bike from the early 1900s. And Chris share what's on the race schedule for 2022.You can follow Chris on Instagram @journeytoironmantexas
In this episode, I speak to Kostas Lozanas who recently released a documentary about his experience at Ironman Waco in October 2021. The documentary titled Keep Moving Forward is currently available on YouTube.Kostas is a husband, father of four girls and owns two Greek restaurants in the Dallas suburb of Rowlett, Texas. He shares that his athletic background consisted of performing early morning PT at a South Texas boarding school and competing in bodybuilding competitions which led him to win Mr. Teen Texas in 2007.After retiring from bodybuilding, Kostas focused his attention to business and his dream of owning his own restaurant. He opened his first restaurant in 2013 and his second recently, during the Pandemic. He admits that having completed two 70.3 races in the past did leave him with a feeling of unfinished business and this year found himself in a position to dedicate the time to completing a full distance race.Kostas acknowledges that he officially started training for the full distance race only 3 months in advance of race day. His coach, while hesitant as first, soon realized that Kostas was willing to put in the necessary work. They focused on getting him to the starting line fit and injury-free. Trusting his management team, Kostas was able to reduce the hours that he spent on the business and make Ironman training his full time job.We spend a few minutes talking about how he got his start creating YouTube content and his passion for filmmaking. We discuss the format for his documentary, and he gives me a quick lesson on the importance of the story arc in filmmaking. We spend some time discussing the Waco course and Kostas' experience. He acknowledges that he embraced the fact that you only get one time to experience your 1st Ironman and wasn't concerned about his finish time. We compare our approaches to bike training and breakdown some last minute advice his coach gave him the night before the race.We talk about his thoughts on being social during the run and he gives advice on how to leverage other athletes to help with pacing. We compare stories on how easy it is to “forget” that you have to run all 26.2 miles of the marathon. And Kostas gives a little glimpse into his previous experience hiking/backpacking in Ruidoso, NM.And of course, we talk bikes! Kostas explains that he had to buy a bike during the height of the bike shortage and was lucky to find a bike in his size that would suit his needs. We round out of conversation talking about what is on the horizon, Kostas shares that he would love to complete in Ironman Florida in 2022. I announce that I will be participating in Ironman 70.3 Texas in Galveston, next April, as part of a relay team and have plans to serve as a volunteer after completing the swim portion of the relay. If you haven't already, click the link below to view Kostas' documentary Keep Moving Forward.https://youtu.be/1kvDRywhY-MYou can follow Kostas and his adventures on Instagram @kostastx

Dean and Paula discuss feedback from one of their athletes who set a personal best at Ironman Florida 2021. The water conditions were challenging. Many triathletes did not finish the swim. They also share tips for open water swimming. RyR is a team of runners and triathletes who receive comprehensive and customized coaching. The team name has dual meanings. The first is based in Hebrews 12:1 in which Christians are instructed to run the race set before us. In this context, RyR stands for Run your Race, with an emphasis on meeting you (the athlete) where you are and coming alongside you to help you reach your goals. The verse emphasizes patience, endurance, and perseverance. These qualities are essential for success as both athletes and coaches. The second meaning is based on the enduring friendship and marriage between the founding coaches, Dean and Paula Roberts. In this context, RyR stands for Roberts and Roberts. While our primary mission is to help athletes set and reach fitness and performance goals, we understand that this must occur within the context of each athlete's daily life. We strive to form an individual relationship with each athlete and make sure weekly training fits seamlessly into family life and work schedules.
