Social Creative Conversations

Yes, our podcast is mainly focused around highlighting women led brands and the incredible  life journey and stories of the human behind the brand.    Every so often we break the rules to feature brands and stories making extraordinary impact in the lives of others.  With our recent focus on mentorship and the value of each person's story, no matter the life stage or age, we are honored to share the story of Cathedral and Spir Candle Co co-founded by Nate and Amy Stone.Cathedral is a local, charm-filled, historical venue that hosts events of all kinds-weddings to photoshoots.  It also donates 100% of its profit to charities.  (as of 05/2023  $81,765)  Spír Candle Co. is a hand-crafted candle company selling locally and nationally.  It also employs underrepresented youth transitioning out of the juvenile justice system. These brands help people.  I spoke to Nate (co-founder) and Shane (Cathedral's Operations Manager) about the organic mentorship program that exists from the employment opportunity.  Shane is a former inmate being (with the assistance of a transition house) empowered, equipped and employed by Cathedral and Spír.   The connection and opportunity is a win for both, as you'll hear from their story.    Not only is there tangible benefit through skill and work, but also relationship building and mentorship.  Both are shaping, leading,  and teaching each other in varying ways.Listen in as the episode dives deeper into how Cathedral and Spír got started, where they are today, and what the goals and aspirations are in the future.Mostly, hear how even the smallest act of kindness and help can produce big impact for many.  No matter if you make the candle, buy the candle,  host the event or benefit from its donation outpouring.   These candles help people. When we think of “family,” a specific image usually comes to mind. Something reinforced on TV since the 50s, an ideal man and a picturesque woman with two wholesome children. It's neat and tidy, but a tidy family is not real. We can do everything “right,” but the idea of “family” was never meant to fit neatly into a box. Today's guest reminds us that, no matter what our family looks like, we're doing ok.   Amy Stone is a family coach who specializes in quieting the chaos that can come with a blended family. In today's episode, we will discuss her work, the different forms a family can take, and how to balance it all.   Topics covered: How can your partner's ex be your greatest childcare ally? Happy Mother's Day, or as I like to call it, Happy Warriors Day! If you are an entrepreneur, or even if you're in a corporation, your health is more valuable and more important and should be a higher top priority than your wealth on any given day. One day, VeVette Turner, and her now husband, were at a beautiful resort but they ended up just watching other people do fun things they couldn't do because they were both overweight. This week's podcast episode is specifically for moms because the gift of health is the best Mother's Day gift I could ever give you.  If you take back control of your health today, irrespective of how lethargic you might feel, regardless of the size of the dress or pants you're wearing right now. None of that matters. All it takes is a decision.  VeVette takes us through those early days when she and her husband decided to change their lifestyle and how she made a decision to live a plant-based lifestyle. She managed to use her imagination and plugged a blender into her car so she can make her smoothies on the go, being a busy sales professional who's always in her car driving from point A to point B. Today, VeVette tells us what keeps her going today as a 55-year-old.  By the way, I have opened up three spots in the VIP Coaching Days for moms who are launching or growing their businesses and who want to take advantage of the power of content marketing, which is an integral business growth strategy to build awareness as the authority of your field. If you're interested in being a VIP for a day and working on your content marketing strategy, email me at melissa@melissallarena.com. I'm also sharing nine tips to help you spend more time with your kids. These are things that have worked for me over the last decade, having raised my three kids in keeping my energy up, and at the same time, helping me become productive. If you're a woman in business, and if motherhood and entrepreneurship are important to you, grab that list by reaching out to me on Instagram @melissallarena. The insights and the lifestyle changes that VeVette Turner shares are applicable to anyone serious about their health. Enjoy the conversation and share it with a mom and tell her Happy Mother's Day!  VeVette Turner's Biography VeVette Turner was a 46-year-old divorce overweight mom of two who found herself depressed and dealing with multiple health issues, like chronic hives, migraines, and irritability. She then decided she couldn't live the same way anymore and had to take the first steps needed to switch to a plant-based diet. Every podcast she listened to helped her with each new step toward becoming a new healthy person. She began to set goals, prioritize sleep, and grow her own sprouts. Now at the age of 55, she has done three half marathons, training for a full marathon, and has completed numerous cycling events. Ladies, isn't that what we all want? To be and feel our best selves! Highlights Decision: Living a healthy lifestyle can be done. You can start over again. You can rewrite the chapters of your life. The first step is making that decision.  Fitness goal: Setting different fitness goals gives you the drive to keep working toward it.  Soreness: Having muscle pain from going to the gym isn't a valid reason to quit exercising.  Recovery: To help your muscles recover faster, consider doing Epsom salt baths and foam rolling. Most importantly, you have to be able to listen to your body because there's a difference between muscle soreness and an injury. Accountability: It's easier to stay on track with your diet when you have someone in your life who can serve as your accountability partner.   Nutrition: Love your body and feed it good nutrients so it can flourish and do what it's supposed to do.  Creativity: Find healthy recipes that you like and figure out ways to introduce more plant-based foods into your kids' lives. Meal prep: Think about having your pantry items delivered through various services. Then you can start doing your meal preparation. Make things easier by prepping your ingredients ahead of time (ex. chopping the onions, making a stock. Lifestyle: Once you get into this routine and you realize how good you feel, it just becomes part of your life when you make that decision to create a lifestyle where you prioritize health, nutrition, sleep, and moving your body.  Support: Sometimes, you may lose friends for choosing a healthy lifestyle since you may no longer go out with them as you used to before. And that's okay. Be open to friend groups that align with your values. Result: When VeVette finally cut out dairy, that was when she really started to feel a difference. All her body discomforts and issues disappeared and she developed mental clarity. Slowly: Just slowly move into a plant-based lifestyle otherwise, it could shock your body and your lifestyle. Take it a little bit at a time and feel good every step of the way. Just know that you're going to get to a point where you're seeing a difference in your scale and in how you feel. Education: What's wrong with our whole system of this standard American diet is education. Educating yourself on all of these things. And as you slowly move towards it, and you start to feel better, it just comes. Perspective: Look at what you're going to look like in five years and where you want to be. Think about the future YOU! Happiness: You can be overweight and be happy. But it's proven to cause health issues so it's not the healthiest to carry around all that weight. Start now and reward yourself when you get through these little milestones. Change: Start incorporating more movement or healthier meals on a day-to-day and realistic basis.  Choices: What do you have to live for? Reimagine what's possible if you make healthier life choices. 125: What If Losing Weight And Feeling Great Was As Easy As Making One Decision? VeVette Turner Turned Her Life Around at 46

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Guests: Vivian Caravaca, RA, Architect, Gensler Julie Jackson, CDT, NCARB, RA, Design Manager, Senior Associate, Gensler Amy Stone, AIA, CDT, LEED Green Associate, NCARB, Design Manager, Gensler   About 17% of all licensed architects today identify as women. And while almost half of the students in architectural programs in the U.S. are women, the number of women who become registered, achieve upper management levels, become partners, and own architectural firms has not increased at the same rate or in the same proportion as their male counterparts.   In this episode of the Gensler Design Exchange podcast, three Gensler employees share their stories of becoming registered architects.   Hailing from Costa Rica, Vivian Caravaca earned her architecture degree from the Universidad de Costa Rica, after sparking interest in design during her high school shop classes. Now an architect in the Gensler Tampa office, Vivian works on a variety of projects across hospitality, workplace, residential, mixed use, and retail.     “I had uncles who worked in the construction industry when I was younger. I sometimes wonder if I would have had architectural career aspirations earlier if I had seen my aunts or other women in the architecture, design, or construction fields.”  - Vivian Caravaca, Architect, Gensler   Julie Jackson is a design manager in the Gensler Charlotte office. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at Wake Forest University, Julie took the leap into architecture and earned her master's degree in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. Starting at the Gensler New York office in 2004, Julie has worked on hundreds of projects at various scales over the last 18 years   “I didn't really go into school knowing that there were fewer female architects than male architects, but it wasn't until I looked more into the architects behind the work I was studying, and at the history of architecture itself, that I began to see that there aren't a lot of architects that look like me. Entering this field with a lot of confidence helped me immensely. I reframed what could be seen as a disadvantage into a challenge that I needed to overcome.” – Julie Jackson, Design Manager, Senior Associate, Gensler   Amy Stone, an architect in the Gensler Atlanta office, had no original ties to the architecture field. A knack for sketching and sincere reverence for buildings led her to earning a bachelor's and master's in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology (with an MBA on the way). Now as a design manager at Gensler, she brings experience with a wide variety of project types including multi-family housing and mixed-use, adaptive reuse, renovations, higher education, interior design, warehouses, affordable housing, and residential design.   “They say, ‘you cannot be what you cannot see.' You need to have examples of what's possible, even if it won't be your exact path. Once you see ways woman have been creative around the obstacles and roadblocks around them, it sparks ideas and abilities in you, too.” – Amy Stone, Design Manager, Gensler   Throughout this episode, Vivian, Julie, and Amy share challenges and moments of reflection in their pursuits, from a lack of representation, to managing work-life balance. As their careers progressed, areas of opportunity were made clear. Through confidence, determination, and the help of their networks — from their families to organizations like Madame Architect — their winding paths led each of them to Gensler.   Their stories are a testament to the power of perseverance, and an inspiration for women everywhere. They are when you actually don't want to do the thing you think you want to do and when you are unaware or unclear of the benefit you are getting from the current behavior.  Avital Miller is an Alternative Healer.
