Today, we are thrilled to welcome Susan Rancourt, co-founder and Chief Running Officer of Rhode Races & Events.  Susan's journey is as inspiring as her events. A lifelong runner originally from New Hampshire, Susan moved to Rhode Island, where she fell in love with the Ocean State. Teaming up with Karen Zyons in 2015, she launched Rhode Races & Events, hosting some of the region's most iconic marathons and half marathons, including those in Newport, Providence, Jamestown, and Narragansett.  In this episode, Susan shares the evolution of Rhode Races, the unique Rhode Island coastal charm embedded in their events, and how their series of races has become a cornerstone of New England's endurance community. We even discuss  their innovative race app that points out historical locations along the route during your race! From community impact to tips for first-time runners, Susan gives us an inside look at what makes Rhode Races stand out.  We wrap up with a celebration of why New England is the greatest endurance region in the world and a nod to some hidden gem routes Susan recommends. It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. Next up is part 3 of our interview with a friend of the show, Bart Yasso! RUN  This week, we share part 3 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner's World until his retirement in 2017. This week, he talks about key things to focus on and takes our patrons' questions!   Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en  Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/  Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com  EAT This week we share a local spot in heart of downtown Fort Myers called The Standard.  We ate brunch there, and it did not disappoint!  The restaurant was a flurry of activity when we arrived with karaoke in full swing.  We would strongly advise that they take reservations, but there happened to be an opening right away, so we took it!  The bar was stocked with local and well-known brews plus bottomless mimosas and bloody marys for $20 to go with the meal.  We started with the jalapeño and sausage corn muffins.  They were tender and flaky with a breakfast sausage flavor and just a hint of spice.    Dana had “The Hangover” breakfast sandwich, and it was full of breakfast meats, eggs, and cheese on a soft brioche bun.  Aimee had the “Short Rib Hash,” one of several hash dishes that looked mouth-watering as they came out of the kitchen.   The Standard does not skimp on the tender meat in the hash, the potatoes were seasoned perfectly, and the over-easy eggs had a perfectly runny yolk a-top this perfect-sized skillet.   If you come to the Fort Myers area, check out The Standard for the entertainment and the tasty dishes.  We can't wait to go back and try their regular menu, too!   DRINK  This week, we got the chance to attend a Coffee Connoisseur Tasting and Certification at the Luminary Hotel in Fort Myers.  Ulli Winckler is the master roaster for Dean St. Coffee Roastery at the Luminary Hotel and president of Rebel Coffee in Cape Coral.    We got a unique behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to roast coffee and tasted 12 different varieties of coffee.  We break down what we learned this week.   If you choose to indulge, please drink responsibly by having a designated driver or taking a rideshare service. Stay safe, Runcation Nation! THAT'S A WRAP! - Here's hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! RUN  This week, we share part 2 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner's World until his retirement in 2017. This week, he talks about the Yasso 800s, runners who inspire him, and virtual races.  Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en  Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/  Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com  EAT This has been a rough winter for many of our running friends.  There is nothing better than a recipe that warms the soul to celebrate that accomplishment when it comes to getting out there for a run in the cold.  A great Irish comfort food dish that we love is Shepard's Pie.  There is a great place in Disney Springs we have featured on the show before, Raglan Road, with a delectable and meaty version of this dish. We have featured one of our favorite cookbooks, The Healthspan Solution, on past episodes, including chatting with authors Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever on Episodes 108 and 109 last year.   This week we made the Shepherdess Pie from the book.  We review it in this episode and talk about what made it so hearty and satisfying as a Vegetarian dish.   You can get the Kindle or hardcover book at our Amazon affiliate links below.  It does not cost anything additional to purchase the book through the links we list, but it does help support the show. The Healthspan Solution Kindle Edition:  https://amzn.to/3r15Xhx  The Healthspan Solution Hardcover Edition:  https://amzn.to/2ObqgtV  DRINK  We talked about a couple of favorite holiday drinks that warm the soul back in Episode 88 of our show.  We typically make a Mulled wine each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas to share with the family.   It can help you celebrate a live race you've run this winter or help you warm up after a run in particularly harsh winter conditions.   We linked to a recipe online but did not share our recipe in that particular episode. This week, we feature our recipe with an option for reduced sugar. Ingredients (Serves 6-8 cups of wine) 1 - 750 ml bottles of a favorite red wine ( we selected a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon  2 oranges- zest and juice of one and the other sliced in rounds to use for garnish 8 whole cloves  4 cinnamon sticks  2 whole nutmegs *Normally a cup of sugar and water are added to sweeten the recipe. To make a more healthful version, you can leave this out and drink it without sweetening or use agave nectar or honey to taste with each serving.   Directions Pour wine into the instant pot or crock pot. Add the zest of the orange.  Squeeze the juice of the orange into the wine and add the whole orange into the pot.  Cook on low for two hours.  Pour into mugs, stir in agave nectar or honey to sweeten, if desired, with a garnish of an orange slice and enjoy!   If you choose to indulge, please drink responsibly by having a designated driver or taking a rideshare service. Stay safe, Runcation Nation! THAT'S A WRAP! - Here's hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! We used our instant pot to create this version.  It makes approximately eight servings. Here is our recipe: Ingredients: White Potatoes Diced - 6 potatoes Water - 8 Cups Dry Garbanzo Beans - 1-lb Package White Onion Diced - 1 whole onion Diced Carrots - 4 whole Diced Celery - 4 stalks Diced Jalapeño  - 1 Whole Minced Garlic - 6 Cloves Smoked Paprika - 2 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos - 4 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Kale - Half of a 16-ounce bag Directions: Combine all ingredients except kale in the instant pot.  Set the instant pot on high and cook for one hour.  Release valve and depressurize instant pot.  Add kale.  Turn back on low for 20 minutes.  Then divide equally among eight bowls and enjoy.  Or divide among containers to store for the week for lunch or dinner.   DRINK  Monday, February 22nd, was National Margarita Day. So, we share our own Pineapple Jalapeños Margarita recipe to honor this day!   Ingredients (Serves 2) Silver Tequila - 2 ounces  Cointreau -  1 ounce Pineapple Juice - 2 ounces  Lime Juice - 1 ounce Sliced Fresh Jalapeños - 4 (2 are for muddling and two are for garnish) Sliced Lime Wedges - 2 for garnish  Jalapeño Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, one additional jalapeño halved from those listed above) Directions Make Jalapeño Simple Syrup before mixing drink by bringing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil on high heat.  Remove from heat and add jalapeño.  Allow to steep in the mixture for a few minutes before preparing the remainder of the ingredients. Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and 1 ounce of the Jalapeño Simple Syrup.  Shake for a few seconds and strain into two different glasses over ice.  Serve with a lime wedge. Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed or rather saved his life. As the Chief Running Officer for Runner's World Magazine for over 30 years, Bart was the public face of Runner's World at races in the United States and abroad. Many runners have told Bart that he had the greatest job in the world, getting to travel to races around the world and meet runners of all abilities. He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro marathon, but it's not the details of the races he recall it's the people he meets. During this interview he shares some of these memorable experiences along with how he feels about "Yasso 800s", a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world. One of the icons of the sport, Yasso has been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions, He has also completed the Ironman five times and the Badwater 146 through Death Valley and cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.it was an honor for me to speak with him. . Memorable quotes Never Limit where running can take you- physically, geographically, emotionally, spiritually, - the sport has done a lot for me There are no shortcuts in running, you have to do the hard work if you want to run faster You can get a lot more out of your body than you think and running proves that First thing I did when I walked into my office, was I said to myself, today I have to get someone who today isn't a runner, to run. I don't have a sign that says, Hi I'm Bart Yasso, tell me your running story, but people do come up and tell me their story Who would not want to run with a youngster, in their first race, and call that your job If a sport is powerful enough to suppress something as evil as apartheid, that's my sport I really wanted to travel the world and never thought that running would be the vehicle to take me where I ended up running races, it really was a dream come true The coolest thing in the sport of running, I got to physically witness, women coming into the sport . This week, he talks about key things to focus on and takes our patrons’ questions! We ate brunch there and it did not disappoint!  The restaurant was a flurry of activity when we arrived with karaoke in full swing.  They do take reservations, which we would strongly advise, but there happened to be an opening right away, so we took it!  The bar was stocked with local and well-known brews plus bottomless mimosas and bloody marys for $20 to go with the meal.  We started with the jalapeño and sausage corn muffins.  They were tender and flaky with a breakfast sausage flavor and just a hint of spice.    Dana had “The Hangover” breakfast sandwich and it was full of breakfast meats, eggs, and cheese on a soft brioche bun.  Aimee had the “Short Rib Hash,” which was one of several hash dishes that looked mouth-watering as they came out of the kitchen.   The Standard does not skimp on the tender meat in the hash, the potatoes were seasoned perfectly and the over-easy eggs had a perfect runny yolk a-top this perfect-sized skillet.   If you come to the Fort Myers area, check out The Standard for the entertainment and the tasty dishes.  We can’t wait to go back and try their regular menu, too!   DRINK  This week, we got the chance to attend a Coffee Connoisseur Tasting and Certification at the Luminary Hotel in Fort Myers.  Ulli Winckler is the master roaster for Dean St. Coffee Roastery at the Luminary Hotel and preseident of Rebel Coffee in Cape Coral.    We got a special behind the scenes look at what it takes to roast coffee and tasted 12 different varieties of coffee.  We break down what we learned this week.   THAT’S A WRAP! - Here’s hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! Bloody Mary Fans:  Don’t forget...Collin and Annie from Sunday’s Bloody Mary Mix are offering a special discount code to our Runcation Nation!  RED20 will get you 20% off your order on sundaysbloodymary.com.    Try it spicy or try the Vegan mix and let us know how you like it!  Thank you to Collin and Annie discount.   Thanks to all our patrons, we have been able to expand our studio and keep the show going over the last year.   We can’t express how much it means to us.  We hope all our Insiders enjoy the Insider Exclusives we published over the weekend!   If you’d like some extra content, swag, and insider exclusives, check out patreon.com/runeatdrinkpodcast and become a patron of the show today!   Thank you for listening! RUN  This week, we share part 2 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner’s World until his retirement in 2017. When it comes to getting out there for a run in the freezing cold, there is nothing better than a recipe that warms the soul to celebrate that accomplishment.  A great Irish comfort food that we love is Shepard’s Pie.  There is a great place in Disney Springs we have featured on the show before, Raglan Road, that has a delectable and meaty version of this dish. We have featured one of our favorite cookbooks, The Healthspan Solution, on past episodes, including chatting with authors Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever on Episodes 108 and 109 last year.   This week we made the Shepherdess Pie from the book.  We review it on this episode and talk about what made it so hearty and satisfying as a Vegetarian dish.   You can get the Kindle or hardcover book at our Amazon affiliate links below.  It does not cost anything additional to purchase the book through the links we list, but it does help support the show. The Healthspan Solution Kindle Edition:  https://amzn.to/3r15Xhx  The Healthspan Solution Hardcover Edition:  https://amzn.to/2ObqgtV DRINK  We talked about a couple of favorite holiday drinks that warm the soul back on Episode 88 of our show.  Mulled wine is one we typically make each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas to share with the family.   It can help you celebrate a live race you’ve run this winter or help you warm up after a run in particularly harsh winter conditions.   We linked to a recipe online, but did not share our own recipe in that particular episode. This week, we feature our own recipe with an option that provides for reduced sugar. Ingredients (Serves 6-8 cups of wine) 1 - 750 ml bottles of a favorite red wine ( we selected a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon  2 oranges- zest and juice of one and the other sliced in rounds to use for garnish 8 whole cloves  4 cinnamon sticks  2 whole nutmegs *Normally a cup of sugar and a cup of water are added to sweeten the recipe. This week, we were so happy to hear that Josh Ozbirn decided to go from a Founder to an Insider of our show.  Plus, we welcome a brand new Insider, Joanne Blatchley, or as we like to call her, Jojo!  Thank you to Josh and to Jojo for their continued support as patrons of the show at the highest level. We used our instant pot to create this version.  It makes approximately 8 servings. Here is our recipe: Ingredients: White Potatoes Diced - 6 potatoes Water - 8 Cups Dry Garbanzo Beans - 1-lb Package White Onion Diced - 1 whole onion Diced Carrots - 4 whole Diced Celery - 4 stalks Diced Jalapeño  - 1 Whole Minced Garlic - 6 Cloves Smoked Paprika - 2 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos - 4 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Kale - Half of a 16-ounce bag Directions: Combine all ingredients except kale in the instant pot.  Set the instant pot on high and cook for one hour.  Release valve and depressurize instant pot.  Add kale.  Turn back on low for 20 minutes.  Then divide equally among 8 bowls and enjoy.  Or divide among containers to store for the week for lunch or dinner.   DRINK  Monday, February 22nd, was National Margarita Day. So, we share our own Pineapple Jalapeños Margarita recipe to honor this day!   Ingredients (Serves 2) Silver Tequila - 2 ounces  Cointreau -  1 ounce Pineapple Juice - 2 ounces  Lime Juice - 1 ounce Sliced Fresh Jalapeños - 4 (2 are for muddling and 2 are for garnish) Sliced Lime Wedges - 2 for garnish  Jalapeño Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 1 additional jalapeño halved from those listed above) Directions Make Jalapeño Simple Syrup prior to mixing drink by bringing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil on high heat.  Remove from heat and add jalapeño.  Allow to steep in mixture for a few minutes before preparing remainder of ingredients. Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and 1 ounce of the Jalapeño Simple Syrup.  Shake for a few seconds and strain into two different glasses over ice.  Serve with lime wedge. THAT’S A WRAP! Here’s hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! "If some of the people at the very front would start with these groups in the very back and see people's journeys, they would be changed—and they would realize, not only are these people working so hard at it but they [will] actually physically see what they go through to get to where they are. You know, I have people come up to me at races and say, 'I know you won't believe this, but I used to weigh 500 pounds.' And you're looking at somebody that weighs like 180 pounds and they've lost 320 pounds, and they say, 'Yeah, I couldn't even walk out to my car without stopping and sitting down. I'd get out to the curb and had to sit down because I was out of breath.' And now they're going to run a marathon. How does this transformation happen? Something gets to 'em...there's something out there. When we connect those people, that's when our sport is really going to take off." It's an honor to welcome Bart Yasso to the podcast this week. Known as "The Mayor of Running," the 62-year-old Yasso retired from Runner's World at the end of 2017 after 30 years with the publication. Yasso, who served as Chief Running Officer for the last 10 years of his career, attended thousands of races around the world, serving as an ambassador for the sport at all levels and celebrating the achievements of top finishers and average runners alike. And while he hasn't exactly stopped doing those things since entering retirement, he's scaled his event travel back significantly to spend more time at home and on the golf course. Yasso and I caught up recently and talked about all sorts of stuff, from how he got his start in running to how he landed his dream job at Runner's World in the late 1980s, and how his role there evolved over the course of three decades. We got into his retirement and how he's spending his time now that he's not traveling to an event every weekend of the year. There was some discussion about the state of the sport, the various ways that it's grown and changed over the last several decades, and how we can do a better job connecting the front of the field with the back of the pack. We talked about running media, the various directions it's gone over the years, and where he sees it heading moving forward. Yasso also shared his thoughts on how runners of all levels can inspire one another, his ongoing struggles with Lyme disease, Yasso 800s (of course!), and a lot more. Prueba Yasso 800’s. RAST. Wingate. Having just retired as the Chief Running Officer at Runner's World after having worked there for more than 30 years, I sat down with him to pick his brain about all things running.  He has raced on all 7 continents, completed over 1,000 races including the Comrades Marathon in South Africa and the brutal Badwater UltraMarathon.  Bart is the inventor of the torture training workout that are known as Yasso 800s and gas been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions.  Although these are all fantastic accomplishments, Bart is probably the nicest person you will ever talk to and he is known for being a good listener. We talk about his thoughts on charity runners, his favorite race distance, and what it is like to win a race. As the Chief Running Officer of Runner's World, Bart travels for 40 weekends a year to races around the world where he gets to not only share his story to inspire others, but also gets to hear and witness others' inspiring stories.  He has become the custodian and voice of the running community.  And, when he retires at the end of this year, there will be some very big shoes to fill. On a personal note, I have admired Bart for years, ever since I started running and first started reading his columns in Runner's World.  Bart's message, “You never know where running can take you,” has inspired me, and is at the heart of what we do at Charity Miles.  I'm very grateful to Bart, not only for taking the time to walk with me in this interview, but for all that he has meant to the running community for thirty years.  Thanks, Bart– for everything. #EveryMileMatters Subscribe on iTunes / Subscribe on Stitcher / Subscribe on Google Play The post Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer of Runner's World: Never Limit Where Running Can Take You appeared first on Charity Miles.

Bill Sycalik had the stark life re-evaluation when he said, "my lifestyle wasn't FEEDING me, it was feeding ON me." and needed a lifestyle reboot. He was living the New York City life. He was a successful management consultant living the experience riding the subway into Manhattan, working 12 hours a day then hitting happy hours, restaurants and live music. Bill quit his NY life in the summer of 2016 to go on a pursuit of self discovery through a transformational lifestyle reboot. He re-lives his feelings of being relieved to quit his job but also him being afraid of walking out on the only life that he had ever known. His comfort bubble was exploding and he was the one doing it. What the hell am I doing? His current profession? Chief Running Officer for his own initiative, the National Parks Marathon Project, where he is running a marathon in all 59 US national parks. His self supported and self funded quest to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the national parks service. How many parks has he run so far?  32 and he’s doing all of this out of his car. Driving from park to park, camping out of his tent that’s actually on the roof rack of his car and the running. Biggest mental and physical challenges? Him breaking the mindset and the physical and mental purging of his old life and to stop worrying about what other people think but he admits that it’s not an easy habit to break. Bill still struggles, but not as much recently, with the thought of…What the hell am I doing? This conversation drills into what it takes to reach a point in life when everything is going good and there is no logical reason to make a change yet a change is drastically needed. That was Bill's motivation to do a lifestyle reboot. In particular, how the Comrades Marathon brought South Africa, a country weighed down by the horror of Apartheid, closer together. More importantly, Bart spoke about the people that make the sport of running so incredible. Bart Yasso earned the title of Chief Running Officer at Runner’s World magazine through a rugged initiation that involved life altering missteps in his adolescence. It took a stark confrontation with his own mortality via the loss of a close friend to jolt him onto his path of pursuing his passion. This experience upheaved his frame of reference from a toxic one to one of redemption. It’s a running theme in our tales of grit: climbs to great heights very often begin at rock bottom. Yasso’s love for running and for life shines through in this episode.   Lessons:     1.    You are the average of your five closest friends, so choose wisely.     2.    You need to think like a champion before you can become one.     3.    Say yes often to new experiences; embrace and love them.
