Frankie is.........humbly making Miami a landmark running club city. Born in Coconut Grove, he remembers the first time his dad invited him out for a run, and the rest is history. Loving the feeling of independence and control that running provides, he did cross country in high school, and walked on to two years of track at FIU. After studying public relations as an undergrad, he ended up going for a Masters in Public Administration, realizing he had an affinity for local politics and government work. While working on his own small business, and as an intern for various elected officials, he one day landed himself in a room where the question was asked, Why Miami no longer had its own marathon...........(there use to exist an Orange Bowl Marathon). At the ripe young age of 21, Frankie stepped up to the plate and helped launch the first edition of the Miami Marathon in 2003. Producing races ever since he was a teenager, he was uniquely situated to overcome the red tape and political buy-in required, resulting in an event that has helped bring over 200 million dollars of revenue to South Florida. Since getting bought out by fitness giant, Lifetime, Frankie has been focused on growing the Baptist Health - Nike run clubs, which now total 8 different locations and host thousands of social runners each week, in addition to recently being named Miami's Chief Wellness Officer by Mayor Francis Suarez. Check out one of the run clubs near you by visiting www.runclubnetwork.com, and follow Frankie on IG @frankieruiz. All paces are welcome.

Frankie Ruiz is born and raised in Miami and if you don’t know him let me share that he’s passionate about running.    He is one of the founders of The Miami Marathon, he coaches a local high school cross-county team and he leads a large group of very popular community run clubs, AND he’s the Chief Running Officer at Life Time Fitness.   We go back in time and chat about Frankie’s start as a runner and how it came to be that he was part of the team that started the Miami Marathon. He also shares some of the local Miami Marathon history which is fun for any locals.   We recorded this episode in November 2020 and it’s been a very challenging year for people who plan live events.    In this episode we chat about some of those challenges from the perspective of an organizer who is managing the expectations of a vibrant running and triathlon community and trying to balance that with being a race director in charge of a major marathon and other live events in Miami all of that during this crazy year filled with uncertainty and the unknown.   We also talk about virtual races and some of the things that were considered in deciding not to hold a live 2020 version of the Miami Marathon.    Frankie Ruiz explains the many options with the Virtual Version of the 2020 Miami Marathon. He shows the prototype of the medal which you cannot see in the audio version but you can find in the video of the interview.    There’s a lot more in this interview that you’ll enjoy. Thank you Frankie Ruiz for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast.   #MiamiFamous #VirtuallyMiamiFamous   You can find the Miami Marathon here https://www.themiamimarathon.com/ You can find Frankie directly on both Facebook and Instagram @FrankieRuiz   _________________________________________________   Keep up with the host Amy Stone at www.amysaysso.com Looking for Podcasting Gear? Gamechangers LIVE hosts the Chief Running Officer at LIFETIME, Frankie Ruiz. Frankie is the Co-Founder and co-creator of one of Miami's signature destination events: The Miami Marathon. In 18 years this event has infused over $200 Million to the local economy. Many said Miami couldn't support a marathon... He is proud to say that we continue to prove that theory wrong! Running in Miami and the rest of the US is alive and growing rapidly. Much of that is credited to the success of endurance destination events like the Miami Marathon and the events associated with Life Time. Enhancing Miami's Quality of Life through participant sport events is most certainly one his continuous objectives. He is a Cross Country at Belen, where he led the team to 10 State Championships and 1 SE National Regional Nike NXN Title. His other passion is around the creation of what has become the World's Largest Weekly Free Run Club - The Baptist Health Brickell Run Club Powered by Nike. The Run Club is now part of a group (runclubnetwork.com) of 8 Run Clubs in the South Florida Area (South Beach, West Kendall, Weston, Old Cutler, Gables, Kendall, Homestead, Doral).

Fueled by a passion for running, love for his home town of Miami, Florida, and a noticable void in the U.S. Marathon market, Frankie Ruiz co-founded the Miami Marathon in 2003 leveraging family and friends, his emerging political connections, and his mantra of "Don't stop". Here in Miami when you say the name, Frankie Ruiz, chances are it conjures up memories of the incredibly popular and late Puerto Rican salsa singer belting out, "Bailando"or another one of his many popular hits.  But to many in Miami's athletic circles, Frankie Ruiz is synonymous with the Miami Marathon which just celebrated its 15th year this past January.  Inspired by his father from a young age to run, he found it a great way to explore his hometown and as a sport he could always compete in. Looking to inspire his team of runners at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Frankie invited a 12 year old athlete and double amputee by the name of Rudy Garcia Tolson who had aspirations of running a marathon. This fortuitous meeting eventually set the wheels in motion for Frankie and his partners at the time to create a marathon in Miami that could stand toe to toe with other reputable races such as New York City and Chicago. Faced with Miami's bad reputation of being a hot, humid, and crime ridden city, many may have thought that a 26.2 road race through the streets of Miami was a bad idea, but Frankie and his team have worked hard to silence the naysayers and to prove to runners throughout the world that this isn't a marathon or (spinning) finisher's medal you want to miss. Frankie's involvement in the community is widespread and his desire to empower athletes of all levels to achieve their personal best is evident in the various groups he's involved in, including the 7 State Championships and 1 SE National Regional Nike NXN Title earned by the Belen Jesuit Cross Country Team which he has coached for the past 19 years. Jose Sotolongo works with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau for Miami. Jose is a passionate Miami runner who has run the Miami Marathon or the Miami Half Marathon every year since it started in 2003. www.themiamimarathon.com His story is similar to many people that as an adult he came to running as a way to lose weight and quit smoking. His first run of a mile ended with his neighbor thinking he was having a heart attack. Jose has run 16 Full and 36 half marathons. We talk about running the first edition of the Toyota Prius Tropical Marathon in 2003 and how the race has changed in 14 years. We talk about what perks you get when you run a race every year. We talk about what his favorite part of the Miami Marathon course is. We talk about Miami 365 and also where he thinks the best place to run in Miami. Jose told me that Miami is the only city that has downloadable running routes www.miamiandbeaches.com . That is pretty cool. Jose's favorite other local race is the Turkey Trot and he explains why that is. He also gives some advice for new runners getting ready for their first marathon. Because of Jose's position with the convention bureau he has some great information about the impact of the marathon on the city of Miami. We also chat about how being a little bit competitive can keep you motivated from year to year. We talk about the famous quote from Dean Karnases which might have actually been said first by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.” ― Dean Karnazes “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”  - MLK Jr. I want to say a special thank you to Frankie Ruiz - unofficial Miami running Mayor of Miami for connecting me with Jose Sotolongo for this interview. Thank you for listening and be sure to visit www.amysaysso.com for more fun stuff that I'm doing.
