The ‘Ordinary' Man Who Did 105 Iron-Distance Triathlons in 105 Days

There's nothing I love more than tales of ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things. But nobody who achieves the extraordinary is ordinary—and while upon first glimpse this real-life Forrest Gump may present as an everyman, he is anything but. Not only did today's guest dare to best one of the world's most impressive endurance records, he downright decimated it—and somehow made it all look ‘easy'. In 2021, the Iron Cowboy James Lawrence completed 101 iron-distance triathlons in 101 consecutive days—a record I both witnessed and couldn't fathom being broken in my lifetime. And yet not too long after, Sean Conway, a dad of two young kids from a small town in Wales by way of Zimbabwe, proceeded to complete 105 consecutive iron-distance triathlons, claims he could have kept going, and believes he could have done 200. In case you don't quite grasp the enormity of this feat: Sean swam 2.4 miles, then proceeded to ride 112 miles on his bike, then ran a full marathon—26.2 miles, repeating this routine every day without missing a single day, for 105 days in a row. Moreover, Sean didn't even begin his endurance career until age 30—a career in which he has quietly eclipsed more records than most realize. Today we unpack Sean's extraordinary accomplishments, his 'terrier mindset', the 'ten pillars of endurance', why he doesn't celebrate small wins, his unique lens on failure, and his reasoning for never, ever having a backup plan.   Sean is quirky, totally authentic, and chock-full of ludicrous stories lifted from a life that prioritizes adventure over security.  My hope is that his example inspires you to transcend self-imposed limitations and craft a challenge that is meaningful to you. Because we're all capable of transforming our lives from ordinary to extraordinary. Age Group Story: Laura Wilson tells us about her first Iron distance event at the Lakesman. She smashed her goal of 13.30 by nearly an hour and a half, winning her age group and finishing 7th woman overall, but that only tells part of the story. She kept herself process focused and ‘in the moment' through the whole event, and is a great example of how focusing on ‘what matters right now' can really help you create a performance better than you ever imagined was possible. Conquering a historic feat of stratospheric proportions nobody thought possible, today's guests will challenge every assumption you ever harbored about the outer limits of human capability. In 2010, Jason Lester and I were the first to complete EPIC5—5 consecutive iron-distance triathlons on 5 Hawaiian Islands in just over 6 days.I'm proud of that accomplishment. More proud that it has inspired others to rewrite their rulebook on personal possibility. But today's guests James Lawerence—aka The Iron Cowboy—alongside his wife and co-captain Sunny Jo Lawrence, somehow makes my resume just sound…cute. In 2015, the father of five did something I was convinced was impossible when he completed 50 iron-distance triathlons in 50 states in 50 days—a stunning feat chronicled way back on episodes 149 & 166, in the documentary The Iron Cowboy: The Story of The 50.50.50, and in his book, Redefine Impossible. But as many of you already know, James recently topped that seemingly untoppable feat by completing truly one of the most astonishing achievements in the history of voluntary human endurance—101 iron-distance triathlons in 101 consecutive days.In case you don't quite grasp the enormity of this truly epic feat, let me spell it out. Beginning in March of this year, James climbed out of bed, swam 2.4 miles, jumped on his bike and rode 112 miles, then completed 26.2 miles on foot, repeating this routine every day without missing a single day, for 101 days in a row. That's 14,200 self-powered miles!Today James and Sunny tell the tale in a warts-and-all conversation that is not to be missed. In addition to breaking down the enormity of this feat—a team and family endeavor in every respect—James and Sunny drop a full-fledged masterclass on mental toughness. Where it comes from, how to strengthen it, and how to ignite the power we all possess to endure the unimaginable. We also discuss the critical role that leadership, family, teamwork, community building, and service play in accomplishing audacious goals and how presence and mindfulness hold the key to unlocking the impossible. This is a powerful conversation that just might forever change your perspective on human potential broadly, and personal possibility specifically. To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube.I have tremendous respect for these two. I love them dearly. And I'm proud to share this candid, behind-the scenes excavation of one of the most mind-bending experiences I've ever been privileged to witness.Enjoy!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today on the Mile after Mile Podcast is race director Fred Sommer. Runners and Triathletes in Florida may recognize the name Sommer and Sommer Sports Events.  We talk about how Fred got his start in racing and producing races. He’s been producing events for 37 years.  One of the fantastic things about this interview is that Fred Sommer has been a part of triathlon since pretty much since the beginning of the sport.  He shares a story about setting up the tri club Central Florida Triathletes (CFT). And working with Tri Fed which existed before USAT. He also talks about the USTS series.  Putting together races before there were even bike racks or chip timing. He describes it as the “wild west” but says that it was fun.  We talk about what races used to cost in the 1980s.  We chat about many of the races that Sommer Sports produces which includes the Great Floridian which has been around since 1990 Florida Challenge which includes the Intimidator which started in 1985. Florida Xtreme Triathlon which is a multi day triathlon that goes from coast-to-coast in Florida. He shares a lot about what makes Clermont, Florida a special racing destination.  The Great Floridian is what we call an Independent Full or Iron Distance triathlon and there aren’t very many of these that exist in the US. Fred and I chat about this and it’s a wonderful discussion about the growth of his races and the sport of triathlon overall.  We talk about how the business of race production and event promoter has changed over time in terms of customer expectation and logistics like permits and even how customer complaints have changed over the years.  Like all events in 2020 Sommer Sports had to cancel and/or defer a lot of events in 2020. But Sommer Sports was able to hold some events and we talked about what some of the challenges Sommer Sports faced were and how they were able to resolve them. Fred shares an inside look to how this worked for him for a variety of events over the spring and summer. Sommer Sports was able to hold the Great Floridian including the full-distance event. We talk about some of the ways they changed things up to keep it safe.  I want to thank Fred Sommer for being my guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast.  You can find Sommer Sports online at www.sommersports.com    ------------------------------------------------------------- Keep up with the host Amy Stone at www.amysaysso.com Looking for Podcasting Gear? In 2018 (at the age of 60), Will Turner crushed the current record for most Iron distance races (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) completed in a year. He then repeated the process in 2019, at the age of 61. In total, he completed 105 Ironman distance triathlons. All at the ripe age of 60 and 61 respectively. His accomplishment was the pinnacle of a 25 year journey into the sport of triathlon. But Will is the first to point out that he is not a gifted athlete; only a stubborn and determined one. While you will find many triathletes swapping stories on social media of their “high volume” training weeks, the truth is that the majority are training for these events on 10 hours or less each week and doing pretty well in the bargain. I have been asked this question quite a lot and so I wanted to put together a specific podcast outlining how I would prepare a programme with a 10 hour time limit. In this workshop you will hear: Why meticulous time management is vital if you are to maximise your training How sleep and nutrition can provide a much better return on your training How mindfulness plays a big part in your daily routine Why consistency is your biggest ally What duration your longest sessions should be for each discipline When and how to include mobility and strength sessions How the ‘ideal week’ looks for each discipline In the podcast I mentioned that I had put together a document with an outline structure of a 20 week plan. Today’s show finishes off the series on how to train for an Iron distance triathlon.  Previous episodes have covered the general training foundation, plus the basics of swim, bike, and run.  In the minds of many athletes, as long as you’re doing the training, this is all that matters.  But the quality of your adaptation to training can be enhanced enormously with a simple yet intelligent approach to nutrition.  Even then, you can do all of this right but sabotage your race day performance if you fail to pay attention to what happens in the final 2 weeks known as the taper period.  Therefore, today’s episode will highlight some of the other actions you might need to take to be at your best on race day, including:   A simple definition of what you should seek to achieve with your daily nutrition Why numbers are not important, and why a simple portion size guide based on the hand is all you need The two simple daily habits which will help most athletes to achieve their body composition targets The female athlete triad, and how to avoid it The definition and objectives of the taper How long your taper should be, and why it depends on many variables Simple advice on how to implement a 2, 3, and 4-week taper Click here for a portion size infographic:  https://www.precisionnutrition.com/calorie-control-guide-infographic To listen to the prior episodes on training for an Iron distance event:  https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-on-how-to-train-for-an-ironman/ https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-on-how-to-train-for-an-iron-distance-swim/ https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-on-how-to-train-for-an-iron-distance-swim/ https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-on-how-to-train-for-an-iron-bike-and-run/ To find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. After the popularity of the recent podcast, “How to train for an Iron distance triathlon”, I had several requests to record a follow up, providing more detail on how to train for the various components - swim, bike, run.  There is always lots of debate about what are the right and wrong ways to do this.  To be quite frank, I’m not sure if there is truly a right way for any of it.  Take a random poll of 140.6 finishers and you’ll find an equivalent number of approaches shaped by a whole host of circumstances.  The one true answer is:  Find what works for you.  That said, there are a number of abiding principles for each discipline and over the course of 25 years it’s become apparent that there are some approaches which work best for the majority of athletes, and that’s what I hope to be able to describe today including: the importance of a good ‘foundation’ and what it includes understanding the requirements of a 3.8k swim in your race and what that means for your training training paces, how they relate to your 400m TT swim and your race pace why training to swim more efficiently might be a better goal than faster how to get the most from your open water swim sessions specific guidance on high intensity sessions why you must prepare for a non-wetsuit swim at certain events the importance of a good warm up on race day how to make sure the swim sets you up for a good day In the podcast I referred to the earlier show 'How to train for an Iron-distance race’ . This week it’s another solo-cast as Simon is in the hot seat to provide some guidance on one of his favourite triathlon subjects:  How to train for an iron distance triathlon.  There is always lots of discussion on various forums, most of which is bad, on what works for an individual. In helping over 1000 athletes reach the finish of a 140.6 event, Simon has a unique insight into what really works for most people regardless of the level that they race at.  In this presentation you will hear: Why it’s crucial to create the right foundations before you start training The importance of planning strength, mobility, nutrition and sleep before you plan your swim, bike and run sessions Why you MUST “commit to consistency” How understanding what your limiters are will help you find the right training mix When training to avoid slowing down is better than training to be faster Unless you are Patrick Lange or Daniella Ryf, why "marginal gains” are not your main focus How the swim is more than just a warm up Why bike performance holds the key to your best race The risk vs reward of doing more running For more information please go to www.SimonWardTriathlonCoach.com, or www.TheTriathlonCoach.com, or email Beth@thetriathloncoach.com.

He is an incredibly tough and rugged endurance athlete with a humble and kind spirit. We could have easily made this a 5-hour episode, as his adventures just brought about more questions. Tony Cowden was an outstanding guest who has done great things with his life, and even better things for our country. Tony has 22 years in the Special Operations community, serving over 8 years and 28 deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and other Central Asian and Africa countries.  He began training for and competing in triathlons in 1998 and in 2005 in functional fitness competitions. He got his Level 1 CrossFit® Certification in 2006. He affiliated CrossFit Wilmington in 2007. He qualified for the 2012 Games., is a USAW Masters Weightlifting Champion in both the 94kg and the 105kg divisions.  He is a successful triathlete, completing more than 50 races, including Iron Distance races. Tony coached his first athlete to The CrossFit Games in 2009, and has since sent 16 more, including teams and masters athletes. He has sent 28 athletes to The Games Regional competitions, and developed Powerlifters, Strongman Competitors, triathletes, Ultra Endurance athletes and Military personnel. In recent years, Tony has helped lead the way in developing hybrid endurance and strength athletes, especially within the military.  His END|Strength™ Programming develops high levels of endurance and strength simultaneously and has become the go to of the US military special operations personnel as well as athletes looking for new challenges. Proving his END|Strength methods, he completed the Beach 2 Battleship Half IronMan Triathlon in 6 hours and the following day Squatted 505lbs and Deadlifted 565lbs. On April 9th, 2016 Tony squatted 600lbs, Deadlifted 600lbs and ran a sub-six minute mile (5:41), making him one of the very few who have completed The 666 Challenge…  the only man over 40 years old to. In September 2016, Tony completed the first annual 106º West Half Iron Distance Triathlon in Dillon, CO. At 10,000 plus ft, the 106 West is the highest elevation triathlon in the World. With early morning temps at just over freezing, gusting winds, water temp of 50 degrees, and the steep climbs you would expect of the Colorado Rockies, the 106 is one of the most challenging. Continually proving the END|Strength methods, two days after the race, Tony squatted 505lbs and Deadlifted 505lbs for 6 reps. Most recently Tony attempted his first ultra endurance event… the BigFoot 200.  A 200 mile ultra marathon in the Cascade mountains of Washington state.  From the hot desert of Mt. Saint Helen’s desolation zone, to the wet forests, and freezing temps during the night, the Bigfoot bested Tony.  His first ultra also turned out to be his first ever DNF.  At 131 miles, he ran out of time.  A testament of our methods and his dedication to purpose, Tony dropped 35lbs of bodyweight in the 5 weeks prior to the race and maintained a 500lbs squat and 550lbs deadlift throughout the endeavor. There is quite literally no other coach with Tony’s resume and experience.  It sets him apart…  but what really makes him a higher caliber athlete and coach is his commitment to applicable, proof based knowledge.  He will only coach athletes and even speak on topics he has up to date and relevant experience in.

Connecting The Dots - When Something's Gotta Change Maybe It's You

“The difference between a good race and a bad race is how you manage the (inevitable) pain” Chris “Macca” McCormack on triathlon. In 2013 I completed my first Iron Distance triathlon.  In the lead up, and training to complete that race I started paying a lot of attention to those that had been there before me.  My coach, other triathletes that I knew and I especially started paying attention to the pro field of triathletes that graced the covers of the triathlon magazines I had started reading.  Chris “Macca” McCormack soon became one of my favourites.  In early 2013 “Macca” published an article entitled “Embrace the Suck”.  The quote above his opening line.   I think that statement holds equally true for life.
