Climate Courage: is it time for climate populism?

Uncommon Courage

In February, Caroline Lucas and Rupert Read wrote an article in The New Statesman titled: It's time for climate populism. They suggest that as politics turns against net zero, we need to mobilise a genuine mass movement against ecological catastrophe. It's an adaptation message and concludes with: a depolarising wave of action that mobilises communities' instinctive protective instincts could really be… popular. And that is climate popularism. In response, Joseph Gelfer wrote: Climate Populism is Coming, But Not The Way Progressives Think. He argues that progressives may be right that climate populism is coming, but that they fundamentally do not understand the form it is going to take. A primary reason for this is because you can't take your existing agenda and “make it populist.” Climate Populism is Coming, But Not The Way Progressives Think - ZNetworkWe think this is a really important issue, so we're going to discuss the bigger story and opportunity/threat around the idea of climate populism, AND we're going to talk about how to operationalise it, as well as the barriers leaders of the climate movement face if they are serious about taking real-world action, which must prioritize those most at risk within our societies. If we don't carry them, we will not succeed, and extremism will continue to rise. To help us explore this far-reaching topic, we are delighted that Joseph Gelfer said yes to joining us on Climate Courage. Joseph is a British-based sustainability strategist and green jobs advocate. Currently he is thought leadership lead at Kite Insights, which helps businesses and organisations achieve their sustainability, climate and biodiversity goals. Kite Insights focus includes: supporting thought leadership, research, communications and strategy; maximizing presence at major events such as COP, WEF, Climate Week NYC and London Climate Action Week; as well as building capacity via The Climate School and its Sustainability Action Readiness Assessment. Joseph speaks it like it is, so it's going to be a great conversation, join us!Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. For full show notes and ad-free listening come to wickedproblems.earth.In this episode, host Richard Delevan discusses the failures and frustrations of traditional climate activism with sustainability strategist Joseph Gelfer. They explore Gelfer's call for 'climate populism'—a revolutionary, rather than reformist, approach to climate change that involves mobilizing public dissatisfaction with the elites. Delavan delves into how populist tactics used by figures like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage could inform a more aggressive climate strategy. The episode also touches on the far-reaching implications of political and technological trends led by influential figures such as Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, and what that means for the future of climate action.00:00 Introduction and Frustration with Current Approaches00:25 Welcome to Wicked Problems00:51 Net Zero 2050: A Sinister Goal01:17 Energy Policies and Their Consequences01:40 Testimony of Secretary of Energy Chris Wright01:56 The Role of Jordan Peterson and the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship02:40 The Impact of Elon Musk and Data Control03:27 Conversation with Joseph Gelfer: Sustainability Strategies06:43 The Disconnect in Sustainability Efforts07:58 The Need for Revolutionary Change10:21 Understanding Trumpism and Climate Denial17:39 Climate Populism: A New Approach21:27 The Potential of Farage and Future Political Shifts24:44 Defining Success and Truth26:33 The Spectrum of Truth27:30 The Climate Crisis and Ethical Dilemmas29:54 Final Thoughts and Contact Information33:47 The Conservative Movement's Long Game37:41 Silicon Valley's Libertarian Vision43:47 The Crisis of Democracy Hosted on Acast. Ever wonder what it would be like to work at a job where you would actually be helping the environment and fighting climate change? That's our topic on the Lean to the Left podcast. Our guest is Joseph Gelfer, founder of Ecotopian Careers, a company that helps people become part of the solution to climate change, instead of part of the problem – while at work. Ecotopian Careers helps people who want to make climate change the focus of their working week overcome obstacles that often prevent them from transitioning to more desirable green jobs.Gelfer is a member of the Climate Coaching Alliance where he works with the Work and Careers group, and he's also an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador. On the podcast, Gelfer predicts that climate and environmental protection will offer major career opportunities, that already are opening up. He explains how individuals who want to take advantage can switch from their current jobs to one that will have long-term environmental benefits.“The green transformation is coming whether we like it or not” says Gelfer. If you care…it has to be part of your working week. Then you're making a huge impact.”Gelfer discusses some of the factors that are harmful to our climate, and lists agriculture at the top of the list. In fact, he predicts we all will be consuming artificially produced meat because naturally produced meat will simply become too expensive. A “meat tax” will likely be imposed, he says.Ecotopian Careers offers online courses, and Gelfer is offering a discount to Lean to the Left listeners who sign up for his course “How to Make a Mid-Career Transition to a Green Job.” Just use the discount code lttl15.Here are some of the questions covered on the podcast:Q. Here we have another of our patented, massive introductions of our guest German Villages, but did Chris get the research right? Oops. German hosts the amazing Modern Manhood Podcast, a show that examines male mental health and masculinity. He also has a show with some friends about hockey, Your Team Sucks. The discussion in this episode covers being vulnerable males, fronting about your Red Sox fandom, finding your tribe, challenging stereotypes and the subversion in satire. A book not recommended by any voice on the podcast, The Game. German says Mark Manson’s book Models changed his life. Weird coincidence, Chris was reading Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck. German was a guest on The Awesome Hour. Is Millwoods Edmonton’s Bermuda triangle? German’s introspection led him to Iron John and The Art of Manliness. Not finding exactly what he wanted, he created his podcast. Paul & German school us on the art of satire in South Park. There’s a difference between adding to a conversation and exploiting it for shock like Milo Yiannopoulos. German encourages people to look at the research of Joseph Gelfer when we talk about masculinity and manhood. There are no stupid questions and we just need to be open. Chris is reminded of an article he worked on, “In The Netherlands Sexuality Education Starts At Age 4”. That’s just part one of our conversation with the empathetic and intelligent host of The Modern Manhood Podcast, German Villegas. As you wait for part two, check out his podcast with the link above or head over to German’s Patreon page and help out. It’s a great show with conversations we need at the moment. You can also find German on Twitter and Instagram. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

Today I'm very excited to talk to Dr. Joseph Gelfer who is the founding editor of Journal of Men, Masculinities and Spirituality,  and the creator of the Future Masculinity online course and Director of Masculinity Research. He also created the Five Stages of Masculinity model, which is used to view a person's understandings of masculinity. This model is the basis of the Masculinity Research organization directed by Joseph Gelfer which offers " insight into men and masculinity in three key areas: Market research for products and services, Social research for non-profit and governmental policymakers [and] People and culture development for businesses and organizations." The conversation that we'll be talking about today, delves a lot into how we as people who talk about masculinities. We talk about the current problems of the discourse involving masculinities and how we can move beyond just talking about the opposite of "toxic masculinities" and how we as a society are stuck in stage 3 of masculinities.

If you remember, a while back we spoke to writer Omar Mouallem, among other things I asked Omar, an ex-rapper himself, about hip hop culture. But I wanted to delve a little deeper and lucky enough I stumbled into an article a friend shared with me, a phenomenal three part story for Philadelphia Print Works entitled “B-Boys and Men: Towards a More Holistic Expression of Masculinity in Hip Hop”, highlighting historically how hip hop and rap have used gender and sexual identities. Along with that, asking questions to other male-identifying people about what it is to be a man in hip hop. John Morrison, the writer of the piece is also a born and raised Philadelphian who for most of his life has embodied hip-hop culture. I was so happy to get a chance to talk to John, a musician, a podcaster on Serious Rap Shit podcast, and a generally conscious and educated human being. If check out John Morrison’s stuff, his amazing album titled Southwest Psychedephia which can be found on Spotify, Tidal, wherever, and will be released on a limited edition cassette in June. Check out John and Josh Indy Leidy’s podcast called Serious Rap Shit if you really want to know what the hell is going in hip-hop. READ OF THE WEEK: “Evolving with the Five Stages of Masculinity”  by Joseph Gelfer, for the Good Men Project he talks about how to resolve your conflicting feelings within feminism or with any movement.

Can we #Occupy our Hearts and lend that energy to the social movements transforming the world? Should we prepare for the apocalypse, or awakening? TURN ON, TUNE IN, EVOLVE… In the 1950s corporations used psychedelics as creativity tools... can modern companies – and strategic individuals – use psychedelics to help solve some of the most pressing problems of our time? Can a global psychedelic village think its way out of planetary crisis, or get back into Gaian union? Can we all have the shared vision of a psychedelic utopia if we all have different psychedelic experiences? Is psychedelic elitism a danger and is our grasping at utopias falling prey to it? Should we be dosing Steven Hawking, and the world intelligentsia or should they be volunteering for the front lines of consciousness expansion? With a sense of urgency building on planet earth, is a NEW type of psychedelic revolution our best hope for planetary survival? Experiential journalist Rak Razam asks this provocative question to a panel of experts at the Entheogenesis Australis 2010 conference including: Rick Doblin (President of MAPS, the Multi-discipline Association of Psychedelic Studies), Henry Cox (senior anthropologist at the Kimberley Land Council), Joseph Gelfer (author and researcher in the School of Political and Social Inquiry at Monash University), Torsten Wiedermann (Shaman Australis)and Carl Turney (EGA).
