What does it actually mean to be a “better man” today? This week on Come Curious, Florence is joined by Jerry Xzeng for a powerful conversation about masculinity, identity, and the pressures men are facing right now. From the rise of red-pill culture to the quiet crisis of male loneliness and mental health, they unpack why so many men feel lost and what needs to change. Jerry shares his personal journey growing up in a traditional household, how he's redefined masculinity on his own terms, and why emotional accountability is at the heart of being a better partner, friend, and human. They also explore: – The impact of toxic online spaces on young men – Cultural expectations and masculinity across different backgrounds – Why awareness is the first step to change – Rethinking responsibility in relationships (including Jerry's decision to get a vasectomy) This episode is honest, nuanced, and an essential listen for anyone thinking about what masculinity could - and should - look like today. Come get curious
This week we welcome Lewis Wedlock to discuss his work as a ‘masculinities educator' with young people in schools in Bristol and across the country. In our age of controversial 'hypermasculine' online influencers – perhaps most famously, Andrew Tate – this can be an eye-opening experience, to put it mildly. Of course the ‘manosphere' of which Tate is part has broken massively into the wider consciousness recently. Last year the hard-hitting Netflix drama Adolescence went viral, followed just a few weeks ago by Louis Theroux' documentary Inside the Manosphere. Many people – including Lewis – questioned whether that film should have done more to challenge the men making a fortune out of packaging idealised, unobtainable and sometimes toxic versions of masculinity on social media and podcasts. People outside of that world – and especially parents of boys – can find it both terrifying and bewildering, in terms of its appeal. So this week we're seeking to get into why it's so attractive and what its impact is. We'll ask be exploring what Lewis – who has a book out, called Masculinity in Schools – believes a more positive vision of masculinity can look like. Following the Netflix documentary Inside the Manosphere and the listener conversations it sparked, Lester Kiewit speaks to Kyle Janse, researcher at the Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change, about how the internet is shaping ideas of masculinity. Drawing on a year-long analysis of over two million South African social media posts, Janse explores the pressures men face around financial provision, absentee fatherhood, and emotional socialisation, as well as the ridicule and backlash men encounter when challenging harmful norms. The discussion also highlights emerging ideas of positive masculinity and the role online spaces play in reinforcing, contesting, and reshaping traditional gender expectations. This episode is a rare role reversal for me as I step into the interview chair for a live recording at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service during International Mens Day 2025. Speaking with Station Manager Gary Devonport, I explore mens mental health, identity, masculinity and the realities that sit behind the uniform. We go into some deeply personal territory, from my past experiences with self destruction and addiction to the long road of recovery, alongside a wider conversation about the role men play as fathers, uncles, coaches and leaders in our communities and why positive male role models still matter. This is not a polished conversation and it was not meant to be. It is honest, challenging and sometimes uncomfortable, but it reflects exactly where I am at and what I believe needs to be talked about more openly. If you care about culture, leadership, the fire service or the pressures men carry silently, this episode will resonate. It is an invitation to think differently, reflect deeply and hopefully start conversations that go far beyond the watch room.Access all episodes, documents, GIVEAWAYS & debriefs HEREPodcast Apparel, Hoodies, Flags, Mugs HEREPODCAST GIFT - FREE subscription to essential Firefighting publications HERE A big thanks to our partners for supporting this episode.GORE-TEX Professional ClothingMSA The Safety CompanyIDEXFIRE & EVACUATION SERVICE LTD HAIX Footwear - Get offical podcast discount on HAIX HEREXendurance - to hunt performance & endurance 20% off HERE with code ffp20Lyfe Linez - Get Functional Hydration FUEL for FIREFIGHTERS, Clean no sugar for daily hydration. 80% of people live dehydratedSend us a textSupport the show***The views expressed in this episode are those of the individual speakers. Chris shares the raw reality of losing his father suddenly at 72 and how grief reveals the power of positive masculinity. Traditional masculine norms taught men to suppress emotions and avoid vulnerability, but this episode demonstrates a different path by processing pain rather than bottling it up. The discussion covers how an older generation was conditioned to never seek therapy or discuss problems, leading emotions to emerge sideways. The intense three-day Italian Catholic funeral process is described and how forcing through the full mourning ritual actually helped move grief through the system faster. There's discussion of a mysterious final phone call from his father exactly 30 days before his death, when they had no cell service in the mountains where his dad asked them to find a spot for his ashes. The conversation explores how losing a parent forces psychological maturation and how embracing both sadness and positivity creates authentic emotional processing rather than toxic positivity.

If you're a bloke, or have a bloke (young or old) in your life - this is a conversation not to be missed. Once you've listened to it, share it far and wide, as Dr. Zac Seidler, a clinical psychologist and Director of Research at Movember, has the most comprehensive view I've ever come across on what positive masculinity and good men's mental health looks like. The conversation focuses on not just the psychological aspects of men's mental health, but the societal framework that shapes masculinity. The discussion traverses through topics of men's mental health awareness, therapeutic approaches, toxic and positive masculinity, and how we can foster healthier male communities. What You'll Learn: Deciphering Masculinity: We delve into how the traditional concepts of masculinity can be both harmful and beneficial and discuss the need to redefine masculinity in more positive, flexible terms. Therapeutic Approaches: Explore why traditional therapy might not resonate with men and how 'gender-sensitive' therapy can be a more effective approach. Social Connection: The vital role of social networks in men's mental health and how a lack of these connections can lead to severe psychological issues, including suicide. Preventative Measures: Understand the importance of getting ahead of mental health issues through early interventions and community-based programs. Breaking Down Stigmas: Discuss the societal changes needed to address mental health proactively instead of reactively, and the importance of redefining spaces for men to safely express themselves. Key Takeaways: Masculinity Redefined: Emphasising the value of attributes like stoicism, altruism, and service when appropriately contextualised. Supportive Networks: Highlighting the significance of building and maintaining strong social connections throughout life. Therapy Reimagined: Utilising flexible therapeutic practices that consider men's socialisation and comfort levels. Community and Connection: Promoting the idea that safe, non-judgmental spaces are crucial for men's mental health. Early Intervention: The critical role of incorporating mental health teachings and practices from a young age to build resilience. Resources: Engage with Movember's initiatives focusing on men's mental health. Explore gender-sensitive therapy training programs like "Men in Mind" to better understand how to engage men in therapeutic settings. Connect with organisations like "The Man Cave" and "Top Blokes" that offer programs to support young men. Support and Share: Listening to this podcast could inspire not just awareness but also actionable steps towards building better support systems for the men in our lives. This conversation sheds light on the core issues impacting men's mental health and explores innovative solutions designed to uplift and support men in maintaining mental health wellness. To continue this important dialogue on men's mental health, visit Movember's website and explore their extensive resources aimed at creating change and advocating for better health. Masculinity has become a battle ground. From the gender pay gap, to domestic violence and rape, the idea of what it means to be a man has been heavily scrutinised in recent times. Meanwhile the gender wars – fuelled by mainstream conservatives, technology and social media – has shifted society's ideas in a dangerous direction. Has the recent focus on women had a negative effect on masculinity? Are men and boy's feelings of shame and exclusion contributing to a crisis? And is masculinity necessarily toxic? Tarang Chawla is an award-winning keynote speaker, writer, advocate and recovering lawyer. He serves as Commissioner at the Victorian Multicultural Commission where he works to bring the voices and lived experiences of culturally diverse people to policymakers. Air Date 9/24/2024 The positive dad vibes of Tim Walz came onto the national scene in the middle of an ongoing crisis of masculinity that stretches from the youngest generations to the oldest. Both positive and negative aspects of masculinity tie in with the general election, basically divided right down the partisan line, and the next generation of voters (not to mention humans) are often feeling stuck between the two with insufficient guidance from the men in their lives. Jesse Mulligan is one of New Zealand's best, and highest profile broadcasters – and a man that can do it all. He's been a standup comic, TV producer, writer, PR man, food reviewer, radio announcer and he's even a trained lawyer. But he's best known for reaching huge audiences both on his afternoon show at Radio NZ, and his stints at Seven Sharp and the Project, where he fronted the show for seven years before it shut down in 2023. This interview was recorded two weeks before the shocking announcement that Newshub is set to close – and while we discussed the future of TV and the jobs in it, no one had any idea what was to come. Jesse was incredible company and such a thoughtful, interesting guest. We talked about his most interesting interviews, Matt and Jerry, his path through comedy and TV, the axing of the Project, what he'll do next and much, much more. This was a really fun one, hope you enjoy. We're also super stoked to have Jesse on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you'd like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Our masculinity miniseries has been a little negative up until now (we're aware of it at least!). But this week that all changes because we're joined by Ben Hurst – activist, educator, and Head of Facilitation and Training at Beyond Equality – to discuss how we can rethink masculinity. As someone who regularly works with young boys in schools, we talk to Ben about what representation boys see of masculinity. In his Ted Talk, notes that boys will be what we teach them to be, so we talk about what characteristics boys currently associate with masculinity and being a man. Because toxic representations of masculinity result in violence, predominantly against women and girls, Ben explains how we can talk to men and boys to help them unlearn the more toxic traits of masculinity and reframe masculine traits to help themselves and those around them. Finally, we end the episode by talking about what boys think is expected of them when it comes to sex, and how sex education and male role models can do better. We hope you enjoy the episode, we've wanted to have Ben on since we started Sextras and we're so happy to have finally spoken to him and learnt from his wisdom. For more of Ben, find out more about Beyond Equality or watch his Ted Talks here:Boys won't be boys, boy will be what we teach them to beWe need to talk to boys about online misogynyAs always, you can find us on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook @sextrasworld, on our website http://sextrasworld.com (http://sextrasworld.com) or email us sextraspodcast@gmail.com (mailto:sextraspodcast@gmail.com). In episode 80 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, we welcome guest Matt Englar-Carlson Ph.D. to discuss the topic of masculinities. Matt shares his personal experience of isolation as a parent and emphasizes the importance of opening up about parenting struggles to create a sense of inclusiveness among fathers. The conversation dives into the lack of male inclusion in the parenting process and the societal pressures men face to conform to certain expectations of masculinity. Matt Englar-Carlson is a renowned expert in the field of psychology, with a specific focus on the psychology of meta-masculinities. Over the past 25 years, he has dedicated his career to helping allied professionals understand the best approaches to support boys and men. These professionals include psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers, teachers, nurses, administrators, and even parents. Matt's initial interest was centered around how men access support, but his work has since evolved to encompass a broader understanding of masculinity. With a genuine passion for his field, Matt continues to make significant contributions to the understanding and betterment of men's mental health. The three key topics covered in this episode are: 1. Positive Masculinity: Matt and Travis explore the concept of positive masculinity, highlighting the need for men to challenge societal expectations and find a middle ground that aligns with their authentic selves. They discuss the importance of men healing from their own trauma and stories in order to become positive role models for their children. 2. Men's Mental Health and Therapy: The conversation touches on the stigma surrounding men's expression of emotions and the hesitancy some men may feel in seeking therapy. They explore strategies for therapists to engage male clients in therapy, such as normalizing their experiences and setting clear goals for sessions. 3. Fatherhood and Adaptability: The discussion addresses the evolving role of fathers and the challenges they face in balancing work, family responsibilities, and maintaining social support networks. They emphasize the importance of men nurturing relationships and finding a sense of purpose in order to adapt to changing circumstances. Overall, this episode highlights the need to redefine and promote positive aspects of masculinity, the importance of men's mental health and therapy, and the challenges and opportunities of fatherhood in today's society.WATCH ON YOUTUBE:WATCH IT HERE: CLICK HERESUPPORT THE SHOW:CLICK HERE: BuyMeACoffee/Therapy4DadsJOIN the MAILING LIST & GET INVOLVED!CLICK HERE: MAILING LISTConnect and Support Matt:WEB: Connect and Support Travis:YouTube: Travis GoodmanInstagram: @Therapy4DadsCheck out the Website: Therapy4Dads.com
