Ie; “threat of violence for compliance” vs “space for learning & skill mastery.” Violence & Compliance: It gets them to do what you want them to do at this moment BUT only if they are already capable of demonstrating that skill. If they don't have the tools yet or if something is stopping them from using those tools you will get an even worse negative result.     Rihanna hasn't put out an album since 2016.  SEVEN YEARS.  Even as her contemporaries' careers have skyrocketed. Even as amazing artists have come into themselves who would make EXCELLENT collab partners. Even as newer folks have come into her market saying/doing things she probably would have liked to.   Instead, Rihanna has been busy giving us Fenty Beauty and Fenty x Savage lingerie line (a billion dollar valuation among both brands that have very successfully grown by focused on underserved markets. Talk about high impact, high profit!!!). She started and exited a short lived high-end fashion brand (she tried and failed some stuff, keeping her identity of a successful entrepreneur). She took time to start her family.  And still came back into music at the single most viewed sporting event in the world.  Regardless of her privilege and the weight her name carries, her career the last decade is a masterclass in capital I identity. Here's what I'm taking from it:  She trades off of her identity as a successful entrepreneur & her ability to succeed - not just a musician  Despite a 7 year hiatus from making music, she knows she's a musician. Always was. Always will be, full stop.  She focused on HER timeline and the work that was in front of her while having the emotions of insecurity, jealousy and FOMO and the LOUD requests from others for her to return to music & touring.    Questions to ask yourself:  In what ways are you thinking “I should be further along” or “I need to be doing more” or “I should be out there!” vs letting yourself walk along side your life and business right now? Where are you refusing to acknowledge the “celeb vibes” you carry? Where do you refuse to trade off of your own name when building new projects?     You might not have a compelling vision today and guess what!? That's perfectly okay.  You might have/be:  Get tied up in theological narratives about a singular will for your lives and have remnants of the belief that anything not IN GOD'S WILL is a waste of time and sinful.  You may have used to have A Thing(™) and now we're onto the next phase and the new thing hasn't materialized yet.  You are coming out of a rut and NOTHING sounds good or fun (you might be in a/coming out of a depressive episode or just feeling BLAH).   Here's what you do:  #1: Tell yourself you're not allowed to vision. Give the expectation a rest.  Example: In sex (as per Dr. Emily Nogoski in her very excellent book, Come as You Are) - if you're not having orgasms but want to be, the best way to have orgasms – is to tell yourself you're NOT ALLOWED to have orgasms and then go have a lot of fun having sex.  OYFN visions are pretty similar - tell yourself YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY VISION.  It almost always evokes a “well, I mean… I do want…” and the fun of it, the pursuit of pleasure and the presence that's created…. that creates fire.  So step one - no orgasms, er, uh, I mean, no vision, just go have fun with step #2:    #2: Choose a vantage point to work towards. If you can't see the whole thing now - get somewhere else where you have a better change of seeing. Pick a point that's different from where you are now. Get there. Look out again and see what you can see. Get to your next vantage point. Work with dedication and presence on what's in front of you. Even if it's smaller, not permanent, and not “the thing.” Do it anyway. Don't worry about scaling. Just get to the next vantage point.  PS: Not having a strong compelling vision isn't actually a disqualifer for working with me in The Residency. Why?
