By the turn of the new millennium, neo-soul had well been introduced into music with artists like Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Jill Scott and Brandy at the forefront. But the true king of neo-soul – in my humble opinion is none other than the musical mastermind himself – D'ANGELO. This being his sophomore album – he wanted to take more risks and make the funky jams he always wanted to make; but what he didn't expect, was the major image shift that he was about to experience after the release of his music video “Untitled (How Does It Feel)", the song and video that turned him into a sex icon for the rest of music history. So let's dive into the musical genius that is the Voodoo album, and after revisiting the album, you all can tell me… how does it feel?Support the show
Fresh off his Super Bowl halftime performance - let's dive into the album in Usher's discography that gets written off the most (in my humble opinion)... "Here I Stand".Support the show
After the debut of Britney Spears in late 1998 – record labels across America were all scrambling to find their own Britney. After all, the solo female blonde pop star was a business model that hadn't worked since Madonna debuted in 1983 – every other pop blonde that came out after her came and went. So when Britney stuck – the music industry struck gold. RCA Records got Christina Aguilera, Columbia Records got Jessica Simpson, and Epic Records got a young teenage girl by the name of Mandy Moore. Her first album was a carbon copy of the pop tarts of the time – so for her second official full-length release – she wanted to take some risks. And alas- was born her self-titled album. With middle eastern influenced tracks like “In My Pocket” – heartbreaking ballads like “Cry” and innocently lustful grooves like “Crush” – the album is a second chapter in Mandy's early pop career – and is so nostalgic to so many of us who grew up in that era – so let's take a trip back in time to 2001 and unpack the third release and second official full-length album by Mandy Moore. courtesies: sony music entertainment, fox family, cannel v, launchSupport the show

By early 2003, bubble-gum pop was on its way out and pop-rock was taking the forefront in terms of the mainstream music market. People were getting bored of the formulaic blonde hair and boy bands dancing in formation and were yearning for something grittier. In comes Evanescence. With rock hard guitars, mystical strings and Amy Lee's haunting vocals, the band filled a void that was missing from pop radio. From their grand-slam debut single “Bring Me To Life” to tearjerker ballads like “My Immortal”, this debut album “Fallen” is a story of love lost, and is a 2000s staple. So put on your chokers, get out your guitars and try not to fall off the side of a building “if you know you know” …. It's time to dive into “Fallen”.Support the show

"Return Of Saturn”. The album that Gwen Stefani has gone on to say she can't even listen to anymore because of how deep and dark the lyrical content was for her in this time. Fresh off the success of her multi-platinum Grammy-winning 2001 release “All For You”, Janet Jackson had been consistently putting out hit records for well over 18-years, so when it was announced in early 2004 that Miss Jackson was to return with a new album (then, her sixth) as well as a spot headlining the SuperBowl halftime show, the streets were buzzing. Nobody could have predicted the series of events that would follow, resulting in the end of Janet's commercial success as we knew it. But at the centre of all the drama was the album “Damita Jo”, an album that unfortunately due to the circumstances in Jackson's public persona at the time, was widely ignored and underrated. Today, we take a look at the album “Damita Jo”, the music videos, the era. Because while Janet was blacklisted from TV and Radio, she STILL gave us everything you would expect from a Janet era. So sit back, and maybe hold onto your top tighter than usual (after all, we wouldn't want any wardrobe malfunctions), and let's dive into DAMITA JO. When you hear the title “The Voice” there really is only one name that comes (or that should come to mind). Whitney Elizabeth Houston. By the late-‘00s, Whitney's music career had all but fizzled as her personal life and struggles became more prevalent than her professional career. But in 2009, Whitney changed that and came back with her first album in 7 years. “I Look To You” is a complicated era, as while it was the first time Whitney was back to recording in years, it was painfully obvious that things were not like how they once were (at least in terms of vocal ability and performance stamina). But on the other hand, the album itself was actually great, and she sounded better than she had in years. This album also is significant for being Houston's final album before her tragic death in 2012. So tonight, let's take a look back into the era that was deemed as Houston's “comeback”… “I Look To You”. This Is An ExperimentThis Is An Experiment is where conversation and music meet, out of Los Angeles, CA....Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

In late 2002, we were in the middle of a media circus caused by none other than Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, “Bennifer” if you will. But, it wasn't just the fact that they were together that fueled this circus. Jennifer also released an album, an album that not only was chockfull of love songs dedicated to Ben, but an album that has since been considered to be her magnum opus. By 2009, Shakira had earned the reputation as the belly-dancing songstress whose hips didn't lie. But the question was, how was she going to follow-up such an immensely successful period? After all, “Hips Don't Lie” is one of the defining pop hits from the 2000s. Well, the answer was in the form of a she wolf. With a more experimental sound and sexy new attitude, Shakira came bursting back onto the scene more confident as ever. While, this album cycle definitely had its challenges, Shakira still slayed and created timeless hits like “She Wolf” and “Gypsy” that are cemented into pop history. So beware of lycanthropy, because we're about to dive in to “She Wolf”.-------------------------------------------------------------------Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. In late 2001, when people ask who the queen of pop is, the average answer was Madonna, maybe Janet. But, if you asked that question somewhere in the UK or Australia, Kylie Minogue's named would definitely be thrown into that mix. But she was about to breakout in America in a big way.. with the release of the album “Fever”, Kylie brought worldwide hits like “Cant Get You Out Of My Head” and “Love At First Sight” to the forefront, among other disco classics. And perhaps biggest of all, she became a known act in America after 15+ years in the business. After the boom of Y2K pop was coming to an end in early 2002, the music world was shifting to a more urban sound. Suddenly the general public wasn't as interested in the famous Max Martin sound that shaped the sounds of artists like Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and Britney Spears and instead were leaning towards a more hip-hop sound. Enter, Ashanti. Her debut self-titled studio album was a blockbuster smash. Released in the spring of 2002 the album is home to classics such as “Foolish”, “Unfoolish”, “Happy” and “Baby” amongst others. A real love survives a rock steady vibe. That was the opening line of one of the most legendary albums from the 2000s by ska band No Doubt. When No Doubt released “Rock Steady” they hadn't had a hit since 1997 with “Don't Speak” and the pressure was on after their previous release didn't quite match up to the success of their “Tragic Kingdom” album. Today join us as we dive into the history of the “Rock Steady” album, so just keep on dancing.
