Ep75: 关于 Bay Area 我们想说的一切 Pt.2

Hammer Time

Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Ear to the Street”(1993), “Gamers”(1996);诗人气质的 Mystic 在 Digital Underground 1998 年专辑“Who Got the Gravy?”中首次亮相,个人首张 “Cuts For Luck and Scars For Freedom” 发行于 2001 年,在其中真诚地剖析了很多深刻内容,让关于耻辱的话题在音乐中有表达的空间,制作人有 Zion I 的 Amp Live,Hieroglyphics 的 A-Plus, 以及 Shock G;街头狠大姐,有着 female player 气质的 Marvaless 和 Passion,推荐专辑: “Ghetto Blues”(1994) by Marvaless, “Baller's Lady”(1996) by Passion;1980s 末短暂出现的 Kimmie Fresh,敢于挑战当时代表男性皮条音乐的 Too Short,重写了女性视角的 “The Real Freaky Tales”,当然 Too Short 作为一名虚怀若谷有格局的老皮条客,与 Kimmie 也建立了友谊;90s-00s 时代的 Bay Area 地区还有很多女性 rapper 由于各种原因都没有留下作品,甚至在时代发展中销声匿迹毫无记录,只有在少数历史报道中我们会得知一些名字,但在本地社区中一直是受人尊敬的存在;Neo Soul 歌手 Goapele 的地下场景名作 “Even Closer”(2002)05. 影响极其深远的 Bay Area Underground Hip HopHieroglyphics 大家族出品质量稳定,尤其是 “3rd Eye Vision”(1998), “Full Circle”(2003) ,创始人 Del The Funky Homosapien 也是深受 P-Funk 影响的文化传承者,1991 年首张个人专辑 “I Wish My Brother George was Here”是明显的 P-Funk 致敬,其他作品另类气质独特也十分推荐:”Future Development”(1997), “Both Side of Brain”(1999);Del 与 Dan the Automator, DJ Kid Koala 的三人组合 Deltron 3030 同名专辑是一张制作与概念都水平很高的地下另类名作;Souls of Mischief 的 Hip Hop 历史教科书级别作品 “93 'til Infinity”,同名歌曲是 Bay Area 地下最具代表性的大名曲,它所传达的时代情绪和制作思路都令人叫绝;大家族中成员的个人作品都很推荐,Opio, A-Plus, Casual, Pep Love 没有难听的;来自 Sacramento 的 Blackalious 在我们之前的“Underground”话题单集中提到过,所属的团体 Quannum Projects 风格另类,元素丰富;06. Episode playlist:The Conscious Daughters - “Somethin To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)”Mystic - “Neptune's Jewels”Passion - “Where I'm From”Kimmie Fresh and The People - “The Real Freaky Tales The Girl Story”Marvaless - “Bring The Bomb”Del the Funky Homosapien - “Mistadobalina”Deltron 3030 - “Mastermind”Souls of Mischief - “93 'til Infinity”Hieroglyphics ft. The album featured guest appearances by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Danja Mowf, Kandi, Pretty Ugly, Big Swells, Musiq Soulchild, AAries, Cee-Lo Green, Pretty Willie, Jazze Pha and Nicole Wray's brother Kenny Wray. The album generated one charting single, "Crew Deep", which peaked at #83 on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Two other promo singles, "Your Favorite Joints" and "Ghostwriter," were excluded from the album but were added to its sampler release. The lack of success from the album's lead single ("Crew Deep") resulted in a cancellation of the album's U. S. release and a granted promotional release in Canada was made instead. However, Skillz would feature most of the album's tracks on his U. S. independent release, Confessions of a Ghostwriter (2005).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:40 UTC on Wednesday, 7 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see I Ain't Mad No More on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Neural.

ATL is a 2006 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film, and the feature film directorial debut of music video director Chris Robinson. The screenplay was written by Tina Gordon Chism from an original story by Antwone Fisher, and is loosely based on the experiences of the film's producers Dallas Austin and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins growing up in Atlanta, Georgia (ATL). The film is a coming-of-age tale concerning Rashad, played by Atlanta native and hip hop artist T.I. (credited as Tip Harris) in his film debut, and his friends in their final year in high school and on the verge of adulthood. The film also stars Antwan Andre Patton, more commonly known as Big Boi of the hip hop group OutKast, Evan Ross, Jackie Long, Jason Weaver, Lauren London, and Mykelti Williamson. ATL was the first feature film for its director and the majority of its cast. Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia in summer 2005, many celebrities from the city make cameo appearances, including Bone Crusher, Jazze Pha, Killer Mike, and Monica. BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. From the movies we all know and love to those hidden gems, there is no movie too big or small to be praised or roasted. My mother once told me that you never get old as long as you keep growing. I live by that. I see people all the time who seem stagnant in their lives and jobs, primarily because they don't see a place for growth in themselves. You have to applaud people who find a way to extend their life by finding something new. I look at my guest today as someone who also practices that theory. When I first met Wille Joe, he was on stage rapping songs from his latest mixtape. At the time, the Vallejo native was one of the many young artists in Atlanta who were primed to blow up and become the next big thing in hip-hop. Signing with Jazze Pha was supposed to be the first step. As it is in music, not everything turns into gold. After signing with the producer, Willie parted ways with his label after a lack of movement in his career at the time. He would take a break and take it back to the bay. That's where he got back to his roots and revitalized his music career. He even made a song that became a bay area classic during that time.  As fate should have it, rather than Willie becoming that next hip-hop star, he became the person who would help develop the next hip-hop star. Today, Joe is head of A&R at Generation Now. Founded by Dj Drama and Don Cannon, the label is the home for the likes of Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow. Joe has found a new calling and is thriving and growing in it. For this episode, Willie and I reminisce about his past music career, barely missing out on the hyphy movement, going back to the bay and creating a classic, pivoting into an executive role, and the rise of Jack Harlow and his favorite strains. Stream our full interview now.  Support the show

DJ X.O. joins me in the studio to discuss his hot new single, HOOD HOP. We discuss his career path to this new level of success and learn a lot of valuable lessons like never giving up on your dreams, as told by the Houston native himself. The Houston music scene is known for its culture, unique sound, and extreme talent. The talent in Houston is undeniable, and there is a crucial force that has played a major part in working with Houston-based talent and national talent; he goes by the name of DJ XO (XO).  The Houston native has been described as a musically inclined mastermind by notable talent from all over the world. His ability to reach all genres of music has made him one of the most diverse producers. XO is one of the CEO's of NoSleep MG (Music Group) which was created over 10 years ago. NoSleep is responsible for curating some of the top concerts, and special events in the country. They also work with upcoming producers, artists, and engineers.   Many may have seen XO djing for Kirko Bangz, Young Jeezy, T Grizzley, Lil Durk, and many others, but the multitalented DJ is also an artist and producer that has worked with some of the music industries top notables such as 2chainz, 21 Savage , Lil Uzi Vert, YFN Lucci, Lil Baby, Slim Thug, Lil Keke,  Dave east, Erica Banks, Jazze Pha, OTB Fastlane, Erica Banks, and Twysted Genius, to name a few. In 2015, XO recorded “Pulled Off The Lot” featuring Sosaman & Rizzo which immediately took off and became the summer anthem. Achieving over 2 million views on Youtube, and heavy rotation on radio, the song took XO to another level as an artist. Off The Lot was literally Off The Charts as it was one of the leading records in over 10 markets with over 250+ spins a week for over a duration of 9 months. The record was #1 on Iheart Media- Houston for 18 weeks straight.  In 2015 XO released his 1st compilation project (XOLikeTheDrug) which featured Off the Lot .  The talented artist/ producer signed a partnership deal with the legendary Rap-A-Lot Records in 2019, in which he also released several singles such as “Big Bank”. The single was featured in the film “Dear Frank” which starred actors Brian White, Torrie Hart, and Claudia Jordan. Since signing with Rap-A-Lot, XO has successfully had a college tour, been featured in various magazines, and worked with many artists. In Spring 2020, XO produced a chart-topping song for Moneybagg Yo & Blac Youngsta, 1,2,3. The song reached the top 10 on the Billboard Charts, and was certified Gold.  Summer 2021, DJ XO announced his “Big Dreams” tour which will be an interactive promotional tour making stops in his hometown of Houston, Oklahoma City, Austin, and Dallas. He is scheduled to release  a new project before the end of the summer. The project will feature Trey Songz, Foogiano, Slim Thug, and more to be announced. XO will also be on a highly anticipated tour Fall 2021 that is scheduled to stop in over 20 cities.  When not performing, DJ'ing or being a creative, XO enjoys being a father to his kids, doing community outreach with the youth of Houston and surrounding areas, and participating in events that will promote unity amongst Houston-based talent.

James gives us quite a few stories entering the music business with the Bar-Kays at such a young age including comradery amongst musicians and even racism during those early years. He even shares that tragic moment when he flew commercial for a gig while his entire band in addition to Otis Redding were killed on a private plane. As a result, based on a foreshadowing conversation he had with his band mates, he was able to carry the legacy of the Bar-Kays months later. Take a listen as James discusses his influence and relationship with his son Jazze Pha, whom he named after his best friend and late Bar-Kays bandmate Phalon Jones. James continues as the only original member of the Bar-Kays fostering relationships and collaborations with other Memphis artists such as Juicy J, Young Dolph and so many more.

Detroit's fast-rising artist Yung Quis is producing some of the most authentic music available today. Mark had a deep conversation with him about life, music, his career, and a lot more. Listen to Yung Quis here. The self-made success of Detroit rapper Yung Quis is a 20-year story of unexaggerated triumph and trepidation. These tales live in his music and he wants his fans to appreciate the honesty. “They will never hear something in a song that's not true unless it's a punchline,” he says. “They'll never hear something from me that's not the truth. Everybody says they're real. I'm just honest.” A product of the infamous drug and crime saturated Dexter neighborhood, the Hustle Muzik Entertainment artist is no longer interested in the dangerous trappings of street life in his ‘hood. He has moved on. Quis explains this clearly on “RAP” featuring Jeezy, the 3rd single off his 2021 album K.O.D. (King of Detroit). He rhymes, “I don't wanna sell dope no more, I swear this rap s**t knocking at my front door; finally realized that I can't do both”. What Quis can and does do throughout K.O.D., an LP he spent a year completing, is share the experiences of his troubled past. Committed to not repeating previous transgressions, he's assured himself a harmonious future through a relentless drive to succeed with his music. “By giving [my album] that title I wanted it to be the best piece of work I could possibly put together.” Since 2018 Quis has put together a string of well-received singles – “Friends” (2018), “Aaliyah” (2018)”, “Paper Tags” featuring Boosie Baddazz (2019), “Number 2” featuring Icewear Vezzo & Big Herk (2019), “The Goats” featuring Payroll Giovanni (2019), and the title track of his 2019 LP Game Over. Among the brilliant tracks on K.O.D. is the autobiographical 2020 single “Dexter”, the lyrical and smooth “Feels So Good” featuring T.I., and the banger “Whip It Up” featuring Jazze Pha. Recording with these top artists was a dream come true. “When I was 15,” Quis begins, “Jeezy's first album Thug Motivation 101 came out. T.I.'s second album Trap Muzik came out. I hustled and grew up and cried and smiled to their music my whole life.” Truthfully, Quis always wanted to be a rapper. He pursued it with no fallback plan, a course his father didn't agree with. “He was the person I wanted to impress the most,” he says. “As a father, that's the worst thing you could do to kids, [telling] them their dream might not work. You tell them to think of a second one. You're supposed to motivate your kids to be the best thing in the world they want to be. That made me go harder with the music!” Possessing a distinct skill for poetry and storytelling as at 7-years-old, Quis would rap with his family to pass the time. They would rap about their detrimental struggles and trying to overcome them. “I just happened to be the best one in the house doing it,” he boasts. Spending time around neighborhood rappers as a pre-teen in the early 2000s led to Quis signing with local label Rock Da House Entertainment at age 12. He didn't make any money but earned valuable experience. “I learned that you can't buy an audience,” he says. “I had my core following when I didn't have a dollar in my pocket.” By 9th grade, Quis had gained considerable traction while simultaneously treading dangerous grounds. He filled his backpack with mixtapes instead of books and distributed them to his high school, other schools in the Detroit area, and throughout his own neighborhood. Regrettably, music wasn't the only thing he was handing out. He was involved in unsavory behavior on those Dexter streets, actions that could have cost him his life. “When I was 15-years-old I got shot for that ‘hood,” he recounts. “I did a lot of stuff that was nonsense. The ‘hood didn't do nothing for me but take from me. Now that I've made it out of there, the most idiotic thing I could do is go back and stand on a corner with everybody else.” Today Yung Quis stands by the strength of his rap career. He's a self-made success story born from unexaggerated trepidation. He says, “My music is the only place I can really talk about this stuff. It's full of a lot of my life.”

SMK is a genius producer whose widespread and often hidden influence across underground and mainstream rap and r&b has yet to be fully documented. He produced the early seminal singles of Al Kapone and Indo & Lil Blunt's full-length for Luke Records and through his contributions to Devante Swing's Da Bassment Crew massively influenced a nascent Timbaland. He's known to be the hidden author of Tupac's "Bring Da Pain" beat and in that cut you can hear his signature psychedelia - interwoven bells in visceral syncopation over a foundation of kinetic bass. It was Jazze Pha and his Bar-Kay father who brought him from West Palm Beach to Memphis where his style exploded after being introduced to the local "Get Buck" dance and sound at Studio G on Beale St. He went on to become probably the most adept re-appropriator of the Triggaman bells on record. This mix spans at least 30 years of his career and features Skinny Pimp, Al Kapone, Indo G & Lil Blunt, Brother Marquis and many more. As many tracks come from digi-only SMK releases that omit vocalist credits, I just omitted all the credits. (Some of those tracks themselves omit the vocalists, e.g. instrumentals from King JC tapes). As for me, I'm a music/video/visual/word collage artist based in Ann Arbor, MI. I first got into thug rap from hearing "Ha" by Juvenile on the radio in Atlanta, then was introduced to bounce music via taped Q93 broadcasts when, in high school, I was in a band with Matt Miller, author of "Bounce: Rap Music and Local Identity in New Orleans" and director of "Ya Heard Me". Years later I continued the pursuit of underground southern rap through the blog "Twankle & Glisten", posting mixes there as "DJ Kid Slizzard", the last of which eventually reached you (and, amazingly, made money to feed Memphis's hungry) - DJ Kid Slizzard here is the track listing - please spread the word.... Ciara is an R&B singer-songwriter and dancer best known for her hit single and debut album, ‘Goodies,’ and successful followup ‘Ciara: The Evolution.’ She is married to NFL star Russell Wilson. Synopsis Born on October 25, 1985, in Austin, Texas, Ciara traveled the world as an only child of military parents. After she settled in Atlanta as a teen, she decided on music as a career. Ciara joined a girl group, which did not work out, but she was inspired to hone her songwriting skills, which led to a meeting with Jazze Pha, a prominent Atlanta producer at the time. She was signed to Atlanta's LaFace Records in 2003 and released a 2004 hit single and debut album, both titled Goodies. Early Life Ciara was born Ciara Princess Harris on October 25, 1985, in Austin, Texas. As the only child of Jackie and Carlton Clay Harris, she grew up on U. S. Army bases all over the world, including stops in Nevada, New York, California, Arizona and even Germany. Ciara settled in Atlanta as a teen and after watching pop group Destiny's Child on television, she decided that music was what she wanted to pursue. She wrote poems and stories as a young girl, but Ciara never took her writing seriously until she joined a girl group call Hearsay. Although the group broke up, she saw this as an opportunity to work on her songwriting skills—a smart move, given Atlanta's reputation as a center of urban music talent. She got a publishing deal and met prominent Atlanta producer Jazze Pha, who helped her get a record deal at LaFace Records. Career The single that put Ciara on the map, "Goodies," was co-written by her and produced by popular rapper/producer Lil Jon. The song reached the top of the singles charts in the U. S. and the U.K. The follow-up singles, "1, 2 Step," featuring Missy Elliott, and "Oh," featuring rapper Ludacris, were also successes, both reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Ciara's debut album, Goodies, was a surprise hit, certified triple platinum (3 million in sales) by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album also garnered the new artist four nominations at the 2005 Grammy Awards. Her second studio album, 2006's Ciara: The Evolution, did well in the United States, reaching No. 1 on the albums chart and reaching platinum status. However, her third album release, 2009's Fantasy Ride, marked a serious downturn in sales, despite its big hit single "Love Sex Magic," featuring superstar JustinTimberlake (and the racy video that accompanied the song). Always known for her agile dancer's body and unique dance moves, Ciara has become a fixture in fashion magazines as well, partly due to her deal with Wilhelmina Models, which foc --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/handradio/support

The Bar-Kays - She Talks To Me With Her Body (Petko Turner Edit) The Bar-Kays began in Memphis, Tennessee, as a studio session group, backing major artists at Stax Records. In 1967 they were chosen by Otis Redding to play as his backing band and were tutored for that role by Al Jackson, Jr., Booker T. Jones, and the other members of Booker T. & the M.G.'s.[1] Their first single, "Soul Finger", was issued on April 14, 1967, reaching number 3 on the US Billboard R&B Singles chart and number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. On December 10, 1967, Redding and four members of the band—Jimmie King (born June 8, 1949; guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (born December 27, 1948; electric organ), Phalon Jones (born 1948; saxophone), and Carl Cunningham (born 1948; drums)—and their partner, Matthew Kelly, died when their airplane crashed into Lake Monona, near Madison, Wisconsin, while attempting to land at Truax Field. Redding and the band were scheduled to play their next concerts in Madison. Trumpeter Ben Cauley was the only survivor of the crash. Bassist James Alexander was on another plane, as the plane carrying Redding held only seven passengers. Cauley and Alexander rebuilt the group. The re-formed band consisted of Cauley; Alexander; Harvey Henderson, saxophone; Michael Toles, guitar; Ronnie Gorden, organ; Willie Hall, drums; and later Larry Dodson (formerly of fellow Stax act the Temprees), lead vocals. The group backed dozens of major Stax artists on recordings, including Isaac Hayes on his album Hot Buttered Soul. Cauley left the group in 1971, leaving Alexander, Dodson (vocals, vibes), Barry Wilkins (guitar), Winston Stewart (keyboards), Henderson (tenor sax, flute), Charles "Scoops" Allen (trumpet), and Alvin Hunter (drums) to create the album Black Rock.[2] Lloyd Smith joined in 1973, and the band changed musical direction during the 1970s, forging a successful career in funk music. With the Stax/Volt label folding in 1975, the group signed with Mercury Records.[3] In 1976, Dodson (vocals), Alexander (bass), Lloyd Smith (guitar), Allen (trumpet), Henderson (saxophone), Frank Thompson (trombone), Stewart (keyboards), and Mike Beard (drums) brought their "Shake Your Rump to the Funk" track into the R&B Top Five.[3] In autumn 1977, the group came out with Flying High on Your Love, an album that featured "Shut the Funk Up", a "near-perfect disco song punctuated by the funky horn triumvirate of Charles 'Scoop' Allen, Harvey 'Joe' Henderson, and Frank 'Captain Disaster' Thompson and dominated by vocalist Larry 'D' Dodson's call to 'get on up or just shut the funk up.'"[4] In 1983, Sherman Guy left the group, and Larry (LJ) Johnson took his place on vocals and percussion. Charles Allen left the group just before it took a more commercial direction.[5] The Bar-Kays continued to have hits on R&B charts well into the 1980s. Guitarist Marcus Price, a member of the band, was murdered after leaving a rehearsal in 1984; the crime has never been solved by the Memphis police. The band took an extended break in the late 1980s but regrouped in 1991, with Alexander once again being the only original member. Since 1991, Larry Dodson, Archie Love, Bryan Smith, and Tony Gentry have been added to the group. Alexander's son is the award-winning rapper and record producer Phalon "Jazze Pha" Alexander, named after Phalon Jones, who died in the 1967 plane crash. Jazze Pha produced the most recent effort by the group, "Grown Folks", released in 2012.[citation needed] In 2013, the group was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.[6] On June 6, 2015, the Bar-Kays were inducted into the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Trumpeter Ben Cauley died in Memphis on September 21, 2015, at the age of 67.[7] Download for free on The Artist Union

He’s had No. 1 singles, platinum and gold albums, has toured the world and has appeared on songs with Lil Wayne and Ludacris, among many others. Five years into a remarkable solo career, Bobby V (formerly Bobby Valentino) has experienced the best the music industry has to offer while working with some of the game’s elite. No wonder he’s calling his fourth album Fly on the Wall.   “Being in this industry for over ten years, having three successful albums, touring the world, and having an impact on people’s lives through my music has been a dream come true. This album is a testament to my experiences in this industry and through it all I’ve been a Fly on the Wall learning the ins and outs of the music business along the way. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs but can always depend on my fans. Through the ups my fans keep me grounded and through the downs my fans keep me motivated. Everything I do is for them.”   Bobby V fills his new album with stories of his remarkable experiences. With production handled by Tim & Bob (Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson), The Pentagon (formerly The Underdogs [Beyonce, Justin Timberlake]), LOS (Usher, the Dream) and Jazze Pha (T.I., Ciara), Fly On The Wall contains the type of polished production accented by live instrumentation that has become Bobby V’s signature.   Case in point is the ultra-catchy “Phone #.” Featuring Plies and produced by Jazze Pha, the cut was born during a studio session. “Jazze’s phone went off and it was that 2Pac song, .What’z Ya Phone #? from the All Eyez On Me album”‘ Jazze was doing a beat and that was the first thing that came to my mind..What’s your phone number?’ That’s how the first line came about.”

LOTL RADIO WELCOMES LARRY DODSON & JAMES ALEXANDER OF THE BAR-KAYS DEBUTING THERE NEW HIT SINGLE "GROWN FOLKS "the first single, features highly sought after hip-hop producer, and son of James Alexander, Jazze Pha. J   The Bar-Kays' are currently working on their 30th album. “Grown Folks,” the first single, features highly sought after hip-hop producer, and son of James Alexander, Jazze Pha. Just as the Bar-Kays have always been able inject their sound with the style of the day, they are using the technology of the day to fund their forthcoming album. A Pledge Music campaign was a launched in August and campaign incentives include Bar-Kays memorabilia, performance opportunities, and even a chance to name the album. Throughout their career the Bar-Kays have always taken time to give back to the community, whether through performing for US Troops in Kuwait and Iraq or volunteering with students at the Stax Music Academy. They've had many tragedies and triumphs, and many lesser acts would have called it quits after that fateful plane crash. “Believe it or not, even though we were youngsters, we had wisdom beyond our years. As 17 and 18 year olds, we all agreed that if something happened to any of us, whoever remained would carry on the band.  I made a promise and kept it,” James Alexander says; “And the legend continues” says Larry Dodson.
