Send Mary and Kelsey a Message! In this episode, Mary and Kelsey deconstruct "Over The Influence: A Memoir" by Joanna “Jojo” Levesque. Many of us know Jojo as a tween sensation who made it big at age 13 with her hit singles, Leave (Get Out), Baby It's You, and Too Little, Too Late. After reaching the kind of success most artists strive their entire lives for at such a young age, Jojo seemingly disappeared from the airwaves and the public eye. Her memoir peels back the curtain, showing how she was held hostage by a bad contract, and her personal experiences with addiction, toxic relationships, difficult family dynamics, and learning to trust herself in her pursuit of creative freedom. Instagram: @whentheypoppedpodTikTok: @whentheypoppedEmail: whentheypoppedy2k@gmail.comWebsite: linktree.com/whentheypopped

This week I got to sit down with a woman whose music was such an important part of my adolescence (and probably yours, too). To this day, I know every word to Baby It's You, Too Little Too Late, and Leave (Get Out). She starred in Aquamarine -- how much did I love Aquamarine? -- and has the voice of an angel. Yes, no other than JoJo. The ORIGINAL JoJo, that is. JoJo let me in on why we didn't hear from her for nearly ten years while she endured a legal battle with her record label that silenced her and prohibited her from releasing new music. We talked about parental mental illness and shared our mutual experience having mental illness play a prominent role in our upbringings. We talked about shame, perfectionism, and the risky behavior and unhealthy relationships she lived through before identifying, seeking help and caring for her mental health.   JoJo was the breadwinner of her family from such a young age - she was just 13 when her first hit single debut as #1 - and we talked about the crippling pressure that came with that. We really went there in our heart to heart and I'm so appreciative of her bravery and willingness to share this part of herself and her past with us. JoJo is FINALLY able to release new music, and thank god, because this EP is truly a gift. It's called Trying Not To Think About It and it's about her experience with anxiety and depression. She talks about the negative, anxious voice in her head (who she calls Burlinda) and has an entire song about the decision to allow herself to go on antidepressants. It's beautiful, and so important, and everyone should go listen.  References in this episode:  Binaural Beats App A Time To Heal: The Ramp (Apple Music)  For more about the podcast and to continue our conversation, you can find me: https://www.instagram.com/jadeiovine/  Executive Producer Nick Stumpf Produced by Catherine Law Edited and Engineered by Brandon Dickert Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

JoJo burst onto the scene at only 14 years old with her 2004 debut single "Leave (Get Out)", an incredible, soulful jam that is already stuck in your head just from reading the title. After releasing two albums as a teen, a dispute with her label led to those tracks being held away for years from any and every online streaming or purchase outlet. After settling the dispute in 2014, she re-recorded the albums and started putting out new music, conveying a newfound strength and ownership of her voice. And that's not even mentioning her acting career, starring in films such as RV and Aquamarine. Today that evolution continues, with her new album, good to know. JoJo breaks her story into three clear chapters, detailing excess, self-realization, and growth in soulful R&B-tinged tunes. In this chat, JoJo discusses sharing her life's trials and joys, what she learned from the late Robin Williams, her Quarantine Island Discs, dreaming of Joni Mitchell, and so much more. You have the power to change your story. Have you ever felt like your life story was not your own? There's always the pressure to become someone who you aren't. Maybe you're comparing yourself to the people you see on social media. This is so easy to do. We often just post the best of ourselves on the internet, and then the illusion is that everyone is living these perfect lives. But we know that isn't true. You can't compare your real life to a filtered version of someone else's.Sometimes the pressure comes from within, and other times, it comes directly from the mouths of other people. It's easy to let the outside world dictate who you are supposed to be. People love to tell people what to do and who to become. But you have your own voice in this world. People can try to shout over it, but it's up to you to make a stand for who you are.On this episode of The School of Greatness, I had the pleasure of talking with JoJo, a pop-icon, who shares about battling comparison, asserting her voice, and writing her own story in the midst of extreme pressure.JoJo is a pop and R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She released her first album, JoJo, in June 2004, and the album's first single, "Leave (Get Out)," was No.1 on the US Billboard Pop Chart. She was only 13 years old - the youngest solo artist in history to ever top the billboard charts. She’s also starred in movies like Aquamarine and RV (with Robin Williams) and in TV shows like Hawaii 5-0 and Lethal Weapon. In 2006, she released her second studio album, The High Road, which was also a great success, but her third album, Mad Love, was delayed due to record label disputes. She realized she didn't have power over her own voice, and this was non-negotiable. In 2008, JoJo founded her own record label, Clover Music, and re-released her previous albums. Her fourth studio album, good to know, will drop in spring 2020, and in April she will kick off an international tour.JoJo was offered her first record deal at six years old. From a young age, she has felt immense pressure from music industry to become who they want her to be, but JoJo made a stand for herself.Join me on Episode 919 with JoJo to learn how she owned her story and how you can too.Where do you think your life would be if you’d had social media early on in your career?
