Hey it's your buddy Jamie - sorry we've missed a few uploads here and there lately, all of us have been very busy! On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Bell's last pick for this season, Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black". Released in 2006, it was her second and final studio album before her death in 2011. Propelled by the singles "Back To Black", "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good", the album hit #1 in 19 countries. At the 2007 Grammy Awards, it won Record of the Year , Song of the Year for "Rehab", and Best Pop Vocal Album. Winehouse herself won Best New Artist, and the producer of the album, Mark Ronson, won Producer of the Year. The album has a sound that is both modern and reminiscent of ages old Jazz as well as pop and soul recordings of the 60s. But what will the boys think? Will they say 'no, no, no'? Or will they find themselves "Addicted"? Come along and find out!

Amy Winehouse and Adele. Two of the greatest vocalists who ever lived who also both happen to be British white girls. In Episode 84, clean‑energy luminary Michael Liebreich joins the show to unpack why oil giants like Shell and BP appear to be throttling back on renewables just as the climate crisis intensifies. Drawing on decades in clean-tech finance and heavy-transport electrification, Liebreich argues that the pivot is less a U-turn than a short-term cash grab—and that the physics and economics of “not burning stuff” will ultimately win.Expect candid takes on capital markets, policy headwinds, and where the smartest money is flowing now, all delivered with Liebreich's trademark data-driven bluntness.
Dans cet épisode, partez à la découverte de l'un des morceaux les plus intimes d'Amy Winehouse. Extrait de l'album mythique Back to Black, You Know I'm No Good dévoile toute la complexité d'une artiste à la voix inoubliable et au cœur écorché.
In this episode, Julius speaks with Michael Liebreich, founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance and a leading global voice on the future of energy. Together, they explore why the story of the energy transition is far from over—and why there's real reason for optimism.

Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) and Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Hannah's choice Back to Black. Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy. Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy's love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her. Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy instead.

In this week's Black World News, Kehinde nearly got arrested. The police, a Black police officer (at that) politely invited Kehinde for a voluntary interview at the police station about a video he put online. The video was posted on YouTube two months ago called It's not a Crime to Call a "Coconut" a "Coconut." Posted in response to Marieha Hussain's arrest for carrying a placard during a pro-Palestine rally, depicting the faces of former Tory prime minister Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman, the former Tory home secretary, alongside coconuts under a tree on a beach. Since then she lost her job and was charged with a racially aggravated public order offense. Marieha's trial is next week: September 12, 2024, at 10 am, at Westminster Magistrates Court in London, and the rally will be around 9 am. Kehinde plans to be there. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde is joined by Erika Brown, co-host of the Broke-ish podcast, for a mashup between Make it Plain and Broke-ish podcasts (the recording will be available on Broke-ish at a later date). They explore with respectful dialogue and disagreement: how to embody the values of the Black radical tradition in their work and podcasting and consider what public sociology and public scholarship are, and how they fit in as Black radical public intellectuals. They talk about the good, the bad, and the in-between. This podcast conversation has been partly funded by a grant Erika received from the Jane Nelson Institute for Women's Leadership at Texas University. - Erika Brown started working in corporate America when she was 20 and built a career of almost 25 years in Marketing and Product Management. From the time she was a child, she vowed that no one would know more about her money than her. Erika lives with her husband and two daughters in suburban Dallas, TX where she enjoys chicken on the bone as much as possible. Erika is a PhD student in sociology at the Texas Women's University. Broke-ish is about being broke—broke and Black in America. About all the unbelievable *ish that America has done to Black people to keep us in this broke-ish state. How we've been in ways that personal finance tips and traditional financial literacy can't fix. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS It's not a crime to call a Coconut a Coconut, Kehinde's video on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZkD-e-b6Iw Policing terms like House Negro insults Black political thought, Kehinde's post on MIP https://make-it-plain.org/2021/02/19/policing-terms-like-house-negro-insults-black-political-thought/ - GUEST LINKS Broke-ish link tree https://t.co/piye1ySPrh Broke-ish Podcast https://brokeish.com/ Op-Ed in Yes Magazine False Prophets of Profit by Erika Brownhttps://www.yesmagazine.org/issue/truth/2024/09/04/false-prophets-of-profit - THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY NEEDS YOU Harambee Organisation of Black Unity (Marcus Garvey Centre + Nicole Andrews Community Library, Birmingham, UK)https://www.blackunity.org.uk/ CAP25 - Convention of Afrikan People - Gambia - May 17-19, 2025 (Everyone's Welcome*) On Malcolm X's 100th birthday, the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity is bringing together those in Afrika and the Diaspora who want to fulfill Malcolm's legacy and build a global organization for Black people. This week we cover Godzilla Minus One, Back to Black, Castlevania, Evil, Mystere, Hacks, and Last Vegas. Andrew and Lauren are both in the house with Kevin this week and they have a lot of ground to cover. You know who else covers a lot of ground? Godzilla!! The big guy suddenly dropped on Netflix this week and Kevin jumped at the chance to watch it with his kids. Andrew had already seen it, but that doesn't mean a rehash is a bad thing... This movie rocks, so go watch it ASAP. Next up, Lauren talks about the new Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black. it got pretty rough reviews from the critics but audiences seem to like it a lot more, and so did Lauren. There is a lot of interesting story to be told, especially for those of us who didn't follow Amy in the tabloids. Andrew takes us to anime land with the Netflix series' Castlevania and Castlevania Nocturne. The original series is pretty fantastic. The newer series, Nocturne, didn't come in as hot as the original, but ends on a high note that left Andrew salivating for season 2. Because the church is a hot topic in Castlevania, Kevin jumps on that train to talk about Evil, a Paramount+ series about a team of investigators hired by the church to evaluate demonic possessions and other oddities. It's a fun horror-adjacent show that is getting rave reviews from critics, so of course it's been cancelled by Paramount. *facepalm* Because Lauren spent the last week in Vegas, she saw the Cirque Du Soleil show, Mystere, which she thoroughly enjoyed. And because she was talking about Vegas and residencies, Kevin once again jumps on the train and talks about season 3 of Hacks on HBO. This show is absolutely fantastic and everyone should be watching it! Lauren sticks with Vegas to close the show, with the film last Vegas. It's a fun, old man version of The Hangover. Well, not quite, but you get it. It's fun but not great, but worth a watch for the cast if nothing else. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. Commentator Candace Owens' messy fall from grace in conservative media coincided with her appearances on popular Black chat shows. That includes The Breakfast Club, led by radio host and personality Charlamagne tha God. Once a minor social media personality who condemned Donald Trump as racist, Owens became one of the former president's chief defenders, and a leading Black voice of anti-Black rhetoric. So is Owens saying anything new in Black media, and were those outlets doing the right thing by inviting her? On today's episode of A Word, Jason Johnson is joined by Michael Harriot. He's a columnist for The Grio, and the author of Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America. Harriot recently wrote for The Guardian, criticizing the choice to platform Owens in African American media. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is perhaps less jam-packed and bumper-sized than normal, as we only have one guest. But what a guest, as Marisa Abela — terrific as Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson's Back To Black, the biopic of the iconic singer — talks to Chris Hewitt about the role, from the moment she got it to the gift she received at wrap. That can be found from 45:15 - 1:03:23 (approx). Then, in the brand new podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Alex Godfrey to discuss Helen's attempt to murder James on the recent tour, tackle a listener question about what they like to watch on planes, discuss (most of) the week's movie news (as this was recorded before a ton of news came out of CinemaCon in Vegas; that will be tackled next week), and review Alex Garland's Civil War, the McGregorapalooza that is Bleeding Love, and Back To Black. Oh, and Chris makes an early play for this year's British Podcast Awards. We're gonna sweep the board in Categories That Don't Exist. Enjoy.
