Suenan:1.-Oh Carol. Neil Sedaka2.-Oh Neil. Carole King 3.- Hound dog. Big Mamma Thornton4.-Bear Cat. Rufus Thomas 5.-Save the last dance for me. The Drifters6.-I'll save the last dance for you. Damita Jo 7.-Despeinada. This week on Pop Theory, Zach and Jeff celebrate TWENTY YEARS of Janet Jackson's criminally underrated DAMITA JO. We revisit the album to discuss some of our favorite songs - where are the "All Nite (Don't Stop)" fans at? - from the project plus some songs that were scrapped from the album's final tracklist like the Neptunes produced "Ruff" and the Rich Harrison assisted "Pops Up!" We also celebrate 7 days of COWBOY CARTER, reflecting on our initial reactions of the album, discussing our current favorite moments from the album, and try to figure out what the HECK she is up to with the visuals! We even through in some anticipation for Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" for good measure.

It's a week of good news for the people in Ireland, whether they like it or not, as they breathe the fresh air that comes with banning smoking in pubs and clubs. Although some may argue that it was a rather anti-social initiative, the people who didn't have to breathe the passive smoke found it much easier to hold a conversation. Not so good news for military contractors in Fallujah however when a mission to guard a catering truck ended in the deaths and mutilation of 4 Blackwater employees. The ambush that took place was a precursor to the First Battle Of Fallujah, where the US would attempt to take control of the city, however politics got in the way and it ultimately was seen as a victory to the insurgents by many.In sport Australia's Libby Lenton broke Inge de Bruijn's 100m women's freestyle record at the Australian Olympic trials in Sydney. Fresh off the success of her multi-platinum Grammy-winning 2001 release “All For You”, Janet Jackson had been consistently putting out hit records for well over 18-years, so when it was announced in early 2004 that Miss Jackson was to return with a new album (then, her sixth) as well as a spot headlining the SuperBowl halftime show, the streets were buzzing. Nobody could have predicted the series of events that would follow, resulting in the end of Janet's commercial success as we knew it. But at the centre of all the drama was the album “Damita Jo”, an album that unfortunately due to the circumstances in Jackson's public persona at the time, was widely ignored and underrated. Today, we take a look at the album “Damita Jo”, the music videos, the era. Because while Janet was blacklisted from TV and Radio, she STILL gave us everything you would expect from a Janet era. So sit back, and maybe hold onto your top tighter than usual (after all, we wouldn't want any wardrobe malfunctions), and let's dive into DAMITA JO. PickinnputtinPickinnputtin-Music and golf with guests from both worlds. Did you know that Liv tells a perp that she knows he “stabbed the Captain with a pickle?” That's no typo. It's in this beautiful episode of television. The fates (and by fates, we mean episode.lol, built for us by friend of the pod, Flet) elected to bestow upon the world the Valentine's Day gift of Wetness—specifically S12E5 “Wet,” which is truly one of the most balls-to-the-wall, front-to-back utterly insane episodes the Munchie Boys have embarked upon in a podcast brimming to the top with insane installments. Moving past its fantastic name, this SVU is centrally concerned with: SexProwl, a professionally conceived “YouTube of sex” wherein true douchebros have a following Soda being little more than poison for our youth Corporations trying to buy up our water supply and the dastardly tactics they'll employ to meet their goals Fungi, which should never be used to hurt anyone The true horrors that inherited wealth wreak upon the rest of the world, namely bad performance art, unwarranted cocksurety, jewelry-related guilting, unloving guardianship, drug addiction, and the framing of innocent mycologists for murder Seriously. Mushrooms, soda being poison, water rights, and horrible rich people. And it gives David Krumholtz a truly Krumholtzian role to jazz rant his way through. Damita Jo is the eighth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. It was released on March 22, 2004 by Virgin Records. The album takes its title from Jackson's middle name. Its music incorporates pop rock, electro, house, and hip hop styles, in addition to R&B. Its concept is based on Jackson's alternate personalities, exploring themes involving intimacy, monogamy, love, and dance. Its production is derived from producers including Dallas Austin, Cathy Dennis, Scott Storch, BAG & Arnthor, Arnthor Birgisson, Rich Harrison, Télépopmusik, Just Blaze, and Kanye West; in addition to Jackson and Jam & Lewis.Recorded over eighteen months, it was the longest Jackson spent on a project. Jackson sought to find producers who identified with her emotions, intending "hard-hitting dance music". Producers declared it "a really sexy record" which was bold, fun, and positive. Multiple personae portrayed include the obstinate "Damita Jo" and lascivious "Strawberry Bounce". Jackson stated that they were "another way to express and expose a deeper part of me", comparing her writing process to that of a novelist; inventing characters with independent personalities. Jackson claimed that the aforementioned characters "absolutely" live inside of her, stating it "feels wonderful" to release them.Prior to its completion, Jackson performed a medley of hits at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. The performance ended in Jackson's breast being exposed by surprise guest Justin Timberlake. Conglomerates involved with the broadcast who received massive fines by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including Viacom and CBS, and subsidiaries MTV and Infinity Broadcasting, enforced a blacklist of Jackson's singles and music videos, although Timberlake was unaffected. The album received generally favorable reviews. Jackson replied to critics focusing on the album's suggestive content and Super Bowl incident in place of the music itself, stating she was "fascinated" by these interpretations, expressing concern for society's need to often place others within a specific sexual category. It garnered Jackson's second highest first-week sales in the US, and was certified platinum. Damita Jo sold over two million copies worldwide. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Jackson was awarded several career accolades throughout its promotion. The album spawned four singles: "Just a Little While", "I Want You", "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "R&B Junkie".

In this epilogue episode, we discuss some of the best and brightest of her b-sides and give tips on how to find them - for the discriminating record junkie than needs physical media.Janet Jackson's State of the World Tour has just wrapped, and there's rumblings behind the scenes of big things to come. This might be the end of this Discography season, but let's just say it might not be the end of her discography. In this episode, Marc ties up some loose canonical ends to this particular musical narrative and waxes poetic about the rumblings of Miss Jackson's future - not just in the new music end of things, but also long-overdue accolades. Special guest Mike Litherland leads the charge and shares his journey heading a grassroots movement to have Janet Jackson inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.Janet Jackson is absolutely Made For Now, and in this episode her quintessence shines over all. This episode's discography: 0:00: Intro / 04:42: "Rock and Roll" / 06:55: "Start Anew" / 08:46: "Diamonds" / 11:56: Control: The Remixes / 15:13: "You Need Me" / 17:41: "The Skin Game" / 21:26: "The Best Things In Life Are Free" / 22:45: "Runaway" and Design Of a Decade / 24:00: "Scream" / 25:40: "One More Chance", "70's Love Groove", "And On and On" and janet. In 2001, Janet Jackson was on top of the pop music world. Her blockbuster album All For You had just made her the first artist in the history of music to produce five consecutive number one albums in a row, her singles were making millions of people happy, and a mere live television performance on HBO brought in 12 million viewers alone. And then? A "wardrobe malfunction" saw Janet blacklisted from nearly every avenue that had once championed her.In this episode of Discography, Marc With a C continues his trek though all of Janet's canonical albums taking on All For You and the slept-on Damita Jo, while making an unfortunate, but necessary, detour away from the music and into tabloid territory. "Nipplegate", as the Superbowl incident has come to be known, casts a long shadow that very much impacts everything that came afterward. Fortunately funkmeister and Jacksons expert Chris LeBrane is along for the ride to add some sugar to this sour note in Janet's legacy. What did her albums sound like after the world stopped paying attention to Janet's every move? That's journey begins now, and it's gonna get weird.Discography:0:00: Intro to Discography/Janet Jackson / 6:05: All For You / 26:46: "Nipplegate" / 35:30: Links that matter / 37:17: Damita Jo / 58:24 Outro See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I like to think of this set as the second half of Janet's career.  Much like Madonna, the first half is ensconced with the traditional house mixes prominent in the late 80's and much of the 90's.  Starting in 1997 with “the Velvet Rope,” the mixes began to take on much of what was happening in the clubs.  With big names like Tony Moran, Thunderpuss, Jonathan Peters and Junior Vasquez mixing her music, Janet was able to successfully transition herself into the millennium. By the time “Damita Jo” came out, she was one of the earliest adopters of the burgeoning electro and progressive scene which she squarely adopted on last year's “Discipline.”  Despite receiving critical reviews from her two previous efforts and reaching number #1 on the Billboard Album Chart, Discipline failed to garner any hit singles and to this day has sold a paltry 500,000 copies (not great for an established artist). One could credit the unfortunate publicity incident at the Super Bowl for her downward spiral or maybe she was just ahead of the pack in mainstreaming the underground scene.  Regardless, that didn't stop her from continuing her streak of number ones on the club charts. Much like many of our divas, we embrace Janet whole-heartedly and welcome the next chapter in her career.  Though it is unclear, the rumor mill had Janet working with Jimmy Jam on a new album that was supposed to have come out in the spring.  With the death of her brother and the greatest hits package just released, it's obvious any new material will be pushed into 2010.  Fiercely independent, Janet has a lot of options she could take.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see what her next move is.  Miss Jackson if you're nasty, it's time for your encore. This set was originally posted on November 24, 2009.  Since there are no current plans to update Miss Jackson's original induction, I  thought it was appropriate to go back and revisit her original induction into the Diva Hall of Fame for those fans that missed it the first time around.
