This is the podcast for Hope City House of Prayer's campus outreach ministry at The Ohio State University: TBOC
After weeks of unpacking the weight of sin, the deception of idolatry, and the power of Jesus' blood, this episode shifts our focus to what comes next: stewardship. Salvation is not the finish line—it's the foundation. God calls us to build on what Christ has accomplished by faithfully managing everything He has entrusted to us: His Word, His Spirit, His mission, His presence, and our everyday lives. In this message, we explore how the Kingdom of God grows in our lives to the degree that we steward what we've been given. Many believers stop at conviction but never cross into transformation. Why? Because they never steward the truth they've received.Through practical teaching and Scripture, we break down: • What biblical stewardship really means (Psalm 24, Matthew 25, 1 Corinthians 4) • Why stewarding your heart is the key to lasting fruit (Matthew 13) • How abiding in Christ through His Word, prayer, and love empowers your daily walk (John 15) • What it means to obey before the storm hits, and why unseen obedience matters (Matthew 7) • How spiritual responsibility impacts your influence, gifts, and relationships (1 Corinthians 9) • Why stewardship will always require sacrifice—and how God meets you in surrender (Matthew 10)Whether it's your schoolwork, job, time, gifts, or relationships—this episode will challenge you to stop coasting and start cultivating. Because what you don't steward, you will eventually lose. But what you faithfully manage in the Lord, He will multiply.“We will give an account—not just for what we heard, but for what we did with what we heard.”This is your invitation to step into maturity and live a life that bears fruit—through every season, every assignment, and every sacrifice.
In this powerful follow-up to our recent episodes on sin and idolatry, we turn to the ultimate answer to humanity's deepest problem: the blood of Jesus. This message unpacks why blood is not just a church cliché, but a central, biblical symbol of life, justice, freedom, and love. From ancient covenants to Passover, from temple sacrifices to the crucifixion, we explore how the blood of Jesus reveals both the holiness of God and the depths of our need — and yet, even more, it reveals how deeply we are loved and how fully we are redeemed.Learn how the blood of Christ justifies, redeems, purifies, breaks sin cycles, silences the enemy, and grants us daily access to God's presence. This isn't just theology — it's fuel for freedom, worship, and transformation. If you've ever wondered what the cross really accomplished, or how to walk in victory instead of guilt and shame, this episode is for you.Key Topics: • Why Jesus had to shed His blood — not just die • How blood functions in the Bible as a symbol of covenant, protection, and purification • The blood of Jesus vs. Old Testament sacrifices • What the blood accomplishes for believers today • How to live daily under the power and protection of the blood
In this episode, we dive into the concept of idolatry — a term often associated with ancient statues and temples, but one that remains just as relevant today. Building from last week's conversation on sin and the devil's deception, we'll explore how idolatry distorts our relationship with God and reshapes our identity.Together, we'll break down: • What idolatry really means according to the Bible, using Exodus 20:3-5 as our foundation. • Why God calls for exclusive worship and how His jealousy reflects His protective love. • How idols deceive us by promising satisfaction, control, or security — only to lead to emptiness. • The dangers of redefining God in our image instead of reflecting His image as we were created to. • Practical examples of modern-day idolatry that Gen Z and college students often face, from social media obsession to relationship dependence, hustle culture, and self-made spirituality. We'll also confront how even good things — careers, relationships, and achievements — can become idols when we prioritize them over God. Plus, we'll end with a reflection activity to help you identify and surrender any “broken cisterns” in your life (Jeremiah 2:13).Reflection Questions to Consider: • What are you most unwilling to give up if God asks you to? • Where do you place your trust and security outside of God? • Are there areas where you justify disobedience in the name of comfort or control?Whether you're wrestling with subtle idols or seeking to grow in deeper devotion to Christ, this episode will challenge and encourage you to reclaim God's rightful place in your life.
In this powerful episode, we uncover one of the most misunderstood and under-taught aspects of the Christian faith: the true nature of sin. Sin isn't just breaking rules—it's rebellion, corruption, guilt, and deception. Pastor Josh walks through the biblical definitions of sin in both the Old and New Testaments, showing how Satan has worked overtime to distort our understanding of sin and salvation. You'll learn how the enemy uses false definitions, religious systems, and cultural lies to keep people from seeing their need for a Savior—and how Jesus came to address every layer of our sin problem. This message is a must-hear for anyone passionate about the gospel, evangelism, and walking in true freedom.Key Topics: • The four Hebrew and four Greek words for sin—and why they matter • How Satan twists our view of God and deceives us about the seriousness of sin • Why self-improvement and religion can't fix what's broken • How to resist deception and live in true fellowship with God • The role of confession, repentance, and obedience in the Christian lifeIf you've ever wondered why sin is so serious—or how to help others understand their need for Christ—this episode will equip and challenge you.
In a world filled with competing worldviews and spiritual beliefs, how do we effectively share the gospel? In this episode, we explore how to defend biblical Christianity in a pluralistic culture—where many believe all religions lead to God, yet struggle with the concept of absolute truth. We'll break down: • The impact of pluralism on evangelism and why people struggle with Christianity's exclusive claims. • Why Christianity stands alone among world religions—focusing on the resurrection, historical reliability, and logical consistency. • The role of deception in false religions and how Satan blinds people to the truth. • Lessons from Acts 17—how Paul engaged a pagan culture, built common ground, and boldly proclaimed Christ. • Practical evangelism strategies for our generation—how to engage with culture, use reason, and share the gospel effectively.Whether you're on a college campus, at work, or in daily conversations, this episode will equip you to stand firm in the truth and share your faith with confidence. Jesus is the only way—let's make Him known.
In today's episode, we continue our discussion on the gospel by addressing a crucial question: Why is there only one gospel that can save sinners? Many people reshape the gospel to make it more appealing—often by minimizing or removing the wrath of God. But understanding God's holiness, justice, and love is essential to understanding why Jesus had to die. We'll explore how the gospel uniquely answers life's biggest worldview questions: Where did we come from? Who are we? Why are we here? How should we live? What happens after death? Then, we'll examine how different distortions—from the Prosperity Gospel to the Moralistic Gospel—shift the focus away from God's justice and redemption, leading people into deception rather than salvation. Finally, we'll discuss why contending for the true gospel isn't optional. False gospels may offer comfort, but they cannot save. As believers, we must boldly proclaim the truth: that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ, who delivers us from sin, reconciles us to God, and secures our eternal destiny.Join us as we dive deep into why the gospel is not just one option among many—it is the truth that transforms lives.
The gospel is good news—but only when we first understand the bad news. In this episode, we tackle the uncomfortable but essential truth of why Jesus had to die. Many today reshape the gospel to make it more appealing, often downplaying the wrath of God. But Scripture makes it clear: humanity's greatest problem is not just sin or Satan—it's being under the wrath of a holy and just God.We explore key biblical truths about God's holiness, justice, righteousness, and love, revealing why His wrath against sin is not just necessary but an expression of His perfect character. Through powerful analogies and Scripture—Jude 3-4, Galatians 1:6-10, Romans 1:18, and more—we confront the hard reality that sin against an infinitely holy God demands an eternal consequence. But here's the good news: Jesus took that infinite punishment upon Himself. He is the only one who could satisfy divine justice and reconcile us to God. Without the wrath of God at the forefront, Christ's sacrifice loses its meaning. Join us as we unpack the weight of the gospel and why Jesus' death was not just an act of love—it was an absolute necessity.Tune in and wrestle with the uncomfortable truth that leads to the greatest hope.
In this episode, we explore how God's desire to act is often tied to our willingness to pray. Through passages like Ezekiel 22, Exodus 32, Amos 5, and Psalm 51, we examine the vital role intercession plays in fulfilling God's purposes on earth. We'll uncover the importance of purity in our prayers and how obedience and repentance are foundational to effective intercession. Key themes include: • Why God partners with His people through prayer to bring about His plans. • The heart postures and choices that hinder or empower our prayers. • How prayer aligns us with God's mission and invites His intervention. • Practical steps for becoming intercessors who stand in the gap for others. This episode challenges us to move beyond personal petitions and embrace our responsibility to intercede for mercy, revival, and salvation. Discover how purity, faith, and perseverance in prayer prepare us to reap the harvest and fulfill God's Great Commission.
In this episode, we explore the powerful connection between prayer and God's mission, diving deep into how the Church is called to partner with His purposes in the last days. Building on last week's teaching on the spirit of prayer, we'll focus on how prayer transforms our hearts and aligns us with God's will for a world in peril. We'll discuss the signs of the times (Matthew 24:1-14, 2 Timothy 3:1-5) and how prayer equips us to endure spiritual decline, intercede for justice, and remain steadfast in faith. We'll also examine the role of the Holy Spirit in leading us to pray according to the challenges of our generation, and how our prayers actively bring forth God's promises (Matthew 26:38-41, Luke 18:1-8).Through passages like Revelation 5:8 and Revelation 8:3-5, we'll reflect on the immense value God places on our prayers—how they are stored, treasured, and used to advance His Kingdom. Finally, we'll uncover the unity of the Spirit and the Bride in end-time intercession (Revelation 22:17) and discover how our prayers for Christ's return and the salvation of the lost are essential to fulfilling God's redemptive plan.Join us as we dive into practical ways to align our prayer lives with eternity, understanding how every cry to the Father is an invitation to partner with Him in bringing His Kingdom to earth. Let's pray boldly, persistently, and with hearts fully aligned with the Holy Spirit!
In this episode, Pastor Josh introduces a new series focused on the profound connection between Prayer and Missions. Pastor Josh explains 3 key takeaways: 1. The Spirit of Grace and Prayer transforms our hearts, leading us to grieve over sin and intercede for the lost with God's compassion, mourning, and wordless groans 2. Prayer aligns us with God's mission, empowering us to persevere in hope and partner with Him in redemption 3. Suffering is not wasted—it often becomes the context for Spirit-filled prayer that fuels transformation in us and the world.Challenge: when was the last time you shed tears for campus, community, or lost loved ones? Ask God for the Spirit of Prayer to ignite a deeper burden for God's mission in your heart.
In this episode, Pastor Josh discusses how Christians can faithfully carry out the mission of the Kingdom of God as His Kingdom's ambassadors. He discusses the profound role that believers have in partnering with Christ in His mission to destroy the works of the devil and advancing God's kingdom on earth. Pastor Josh unpacks 1. The Supremacy of Christ as the ultimate ambassador 2. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Equipping and Empowering Believers with the same Power and Authority Jesus demonstrated during His earthly ministry 3. Practical insights into Spiritual Warfare.
In this episode, Pastor Josh explores the profound message of the Kingdom of God, a theme central to Jesus' mission and vital for a biblical worldview. Pastor Josh discusses the contrast between God's kingdom and earthly systems, highlighting how human efforts alone can't resolve issues of injustice, suffering, or sin. This kingdom is unlike any we've known—it's marked by eternal peace, true justice, and compassionate authority through King Jesus. We dive into what it means to live as ambassadors of this kingdom, not merely as saved individuals but as active participants in God's mission. You'll discover how understanding this gospel frees us from misplaced hopes in flawed human systems and empowers us to engage in the world with a firm foundation, grounded in truth and prayer. Join us as we discuss how the Kingdom of God calls us to a purpose far beyond personal salvation, inviting us to be part of God's restorative work on earth.
In this episode, Pastor Josh helps us explore how God's unchanging purpose for our lives is fulfilled through the transformative work of the Holy Spirit and the refining process of suffering. Discover how sanctification, rather than life's circumstances or outcomes, is central to God's will. We'll discuss the Spirit's role in guiding us to truth, empowering us to overcome sin, and deepening our relationship with God even amid trials. Learn how suffering, like the trials Jesus endured, builds tested obedience, shapes our character, and brings us closer to God's ultimate purpose.
In this episode, Pastor Josh gives a biblical response to the age-old questions like: “What is my purpose?”, “Why do I exist?”, “What was I made for?”. He speaks about the ways the culture we live in has mislead us into thinking that our purpose is defined by our Vocation or Gifting, and he gives an explanation of the difference between our 1. Purpose 2. Calling 3. Vocation. He begins the message by showing how God's Purpose, Calling, and Vocation from humanity has been defined since Genesis, before sin entered the world and continues by demonstrating how we rediscover these concepts through our journey of sanctification.
In this week's episode, Pastor Josh emphasizes the need to prioritize achieving joy in our relationship with God. He states how joy and finding the most pleasure and satisfaction as possible is the way to give God the most glory and to endure through any circumstance, and overcome any sin issues. He highlights how joy is not a one time interaction, but we have to keep choosing to make decisions that will produce joy in our lives. He makes several central points: 1. Pursuing temporary happiness is robbing many people from eternal joy 2. Friendship with the World Hinders Us from Experiencing Joy 3. God's Presence Being the Beginning of Our Pursuit for Joy 4. Increasing Revelation of Perfect Love Increases Our Joy and Desire to Obey His Commands 5. Joy is Ultimately Fulfilled in Jesus' Second Coming
In this message, Pastor Josh addresses the need for a new standard in how we value the things of God vs. the things of the world, and how we determine our willingness to surrender based on how we value Christ. He discusses: 1. What Causes Us to Value the Wrong Things? 2. Clinging to Our Rights vs. Laying Down Our Lives 3. How the Love of the World Grieves the Holy Spirit in Our Lives.
Pastor Josh discusses the need to understand who the Holy Spirit is so that we can understand how we are initially and continually transformed by the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. He demonstrates three things: 1. The need to acknowledge, know, and value the Holy Spirit 2. Humanity's need to be delivered from indwelling sin and relying on good works part from the power of the Holy Spirit 3. The Benefits and Identity Transformation that comes from receiving the power and presence of the Holy Spirit as believers.
Pastor Josh follows up the prior message about forming a biblical worldview, by explaining the necessity of forming the right definitions of encounters with God in a biblical worldview. He explains how the only encounter we have with God isn't at our salvation moment, altar call, or worship set but we are called to a lifetime of encountering God. In this message he covers 3 Topics: 1. Defining the One Necessary Transformative Encounter 2. Correcting Limited Expectations and Definitions of Transformative Encounters 3. Emphasizes the practical yet supernatural needs to know the Word, meditate on the Word, and to submit to Church communities in order to sustain these transformative encounters we have.
Pastor Josh begins the semester by introducing the need for Christians to experience Transformed Living. He communicates that whatever we view about the world around us and our role in it will guide how we live our lives. This frames the discussion about how we need to test to see if our wordlview is formed by the often uncomfortable truths of Bible, or by comfortable truths found in modern culture or ancient traditions. He invites us into having any unbiblical worldviews transformed into a biblical one.
Pastor Josh concludes the series by discussing what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ vs. a false one. More specifically, he addressed 1. Abiding in Christ's word 2. How His word serves as an anchor for our faith 3. The cost of true discipleship.
Pastor Josh continues the series by discussing how the centrality of the gospel of Jesus Christ never ends even after we are saved. He highlights its importance in living a stable and unshakable life in Christ. He focuses on three specific topics: 1. The Gospel of Christ Saves 2. The Gospel of Christ Sanctifies 3. The Gospel of Christ Equips.
Pastor Josh begins a new series emphasizing the need for students to have a firm foundation in Christ before times of trials, testing, and temptation arrive and can cause their faith to collapse. This week, he begins by explaining the parable of the sower, describing the 4 different types of hearts God's word gets sown into, and highlighting the responsibility we all have to respond well when we hear the word. Lastly, he explains the differences between Christian lives that have foundations built on Jesus vs “Christian” lives that have no foundation built on Jesus.
Minister Isis Underwood shares with us the necessity of Longsuffering for Christian maturity. She explains how the term frequently gets limited to either patience or waiting for something, but she unpacks the details of the concept. Then, she explains the connection between: 1. the Christian's Longsuffering and their Faith 2. The Consequences of Lacking in Longsuffering and lastly, 3. Longsuffering and the Maturity/Fruit it Produces.
Pastor Josh teaches about the importance for Christians to understand the access to God's presence that they have been offered through the sacrifice of Jesus. He highlights 3 topics: 1. Access to God's Throne as the Hope of the Gospel 2. The Most Holy Place: From Behind the Curtain to Behind Closed Doors 3. How to Pray in God's Presence.
Apostle Valarie and Minister Isis lead a teaching and discussion with students about the multi-facets of intercession. They discuss how intercession is effective for spiritual warfare, powerful for maintaining unity in the Church, and a way in which we partner with God. They also help students work through several unique personal inquiries concerning this topic of intercession.
OSU student India follows up Courtney's testimony from Part 1 by confirming how much Courtney's testimony influenced her to end her pursuit of becoming and AKA, as well as contributing to her friend being saved from that path as well. Her testimony may be most beneficial for other women or men who are considering crossing!
Courtney Moore, former AKA, publicly denounces from AKA and testifies about the idolatry of ALL Greek Life that many are unaware of. Courtney testifies about the ungodly compromises required for entrance, membership, sisterhood/brotherhood into Greek organizations (e.g., the Divine Nine especially so), and the consequences of joining these sororities and fraternities under false pretenses.
Pastor Josh provides a biblical foundation for both the need for and the power of godly community. In doing so, he also demonstrates ways that ungodly community can have power over us as well.
Pastor Josh teaches on four topics: 1. Pruning: Moving Forward by Cutting Back 2. Abiding in Christ and Bearing Fruit 3. The Love Behind the Lord's Discipline 4. Fruitful Growth in God.
In this episode, Pastor Josh teaches how believers should live. Believers should be transformed and living lives that are obedient to Jesus. We should want to live holy because God is Holy! Having a fear of the Lord is necessary to be sober-minded and live the way God desires for us. We should in response to salvation, desire to please the Lord. We have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus which has purchased our salvation. As born-again believers there should be evidence that we are a new creation. We should be dependent on God and His Word. If we truly love Jesus we must obey Him! We have been transformed and can boldly proclaim the praises of God.
Pastor Josh preaches on the difference between compassion and compromise. He discusses how true love and compassion do not rejoice in sin but in TRUTH. Biblical love is not giving someone false assurance and promoting compromise– even if it is unpopular. Compassion comes from true doctrine. He explains that if your life contradicts the Bible, you are in compromise and that many people have “itching ears” today and do not endure sound doctrine. In these last days, many doctrines of demons say it's okay to have the world and Jesus, but we cannot. Tolerating sin will lead to compromise, and ultimately judgment. The Holy Spirit's conviction of compromise is an invitation to repentance and freedom!
In this episode, Pastor Josh helps to clarify what the biblical definition and process of repentance is. He identifies several ways that the concept of repentance has been tainted or ignored, and he desires to realign our view of repentance biblically. He preaches on 1. A Biblical Definition of Repentance 2. Biblical Examples of True Repentance 3. Consequences for False Repentance 4. What Prayers of True Repentance Sound Like.
Pastor Josh wraps up the semester long journey of understanding the various attributes of God by reminding us what understanding is all unto worshipping God in spirit and in truth. He discusses the difference between True seeking and False seeking of God's face, and he introduces an acronym to better understand what it means to seek God's face. F - Focus of worship, A - Aim of worship, C - Cause of worship, E - Effect of our worship.
Pastor Josh teaches on the Holy Spirit's role as a Witness throughout Scripture. He primarily teaches about the Holy Spirit's witness to the World of Sin, Righteousness, and Coming Judgment. Then, Pastor Josh begins to dive deeper into the Holy Spirit's witness about the Second Coming of Jesus and how it serves as an anchor for the soul of believers, a final answer to the problem of evil, and a demonstration of Jesus' justice and jealousy for His Bride.
Pastor Josh teaches about the Holy Spirit's role as Baptizer through a non-traditional lens. Whereas many people know about the Holy Spirit's role in producing power to be witnesses, and for the gift of tongues, Pastor Josh highlights the “Power for the Practical vs. The Power for Public Ministry” which demonstrates the power made available to spirit-filled believers to live faithful and fruitful lives in Christ. This includes power to persevere through trials and temptation, power to hold firm to one's identity in Christ, power to submit to the Holy Spirit's leadership, power for stability in unstable circumstances, and power for crucifying the flesh and its lusts (among several others).
Pastor Josh teaches about how vital it is to understand that Holy Spirit is personal in His nature in the sense of Holy Spirit having: 1. Emotions/Feelings, 2. A Mind/Will, 3. Desire for Relationship/Partnership, and 4. A Desire to Speak to Us. He aims to dismantle false and incomplete views of the Holy Spirit being an impersonal force, presence, feeling, voice, IT, or experience. He explains that this will ultimately bring us into TRUE INTIMACY with Holy Spirit.
Minister Naomi Chatman teaches and testifies about how Jesus is the “God of the Valley” and how to handle suffering well as a follower of Christ. Minister Naomi anchors her message in 5 Truths: 1. The Sovereignty of God 2. The Presence of God 3. The Love of God 4. The Immutability of God 5. The Goodness of God. These 5 truths are meant to serve as anchors for endurance as believers WILL go through suffering in this world.
Pastor Josh Underwood continues discussing the attributes of Jesus as he teaches about the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He teaches that Jesus is not only the Lord of our individual lives as believers, but He is Lord over heaven, earth, and hell. He teaches 1. Jesus is the Lord of the kingdom of God 2. The devil has power too because he rules the kingdom of darkness 3. Jesus came to destroy various works of the devil on the cross 4. Jesus publicly displayed himself as Lord over the kingdom of darkness through deliverance both publicly and privately.
Pastor Josh Underwood begins to teach on the attributes of Jesus, the Son of God. In this message, he covers concepts about Jesus being the only way to know God the Father and to have access to God's presence. Pastor Josh helps explain the Narrow Gate vs. the Broad Gate and ushers a gospel presentation so we can see what the narrow way to the Father is. He ends the sermon by discussing how the "Old way" of the tabernacle system was to point to Jesus as the New and Living way to access God.
Pastor Josh Underwood continues to teach on the attributes of God the Father by focusing on the type of love the Father has for His children: Jealous Love. Pastor Josh discusses 4 things: 1. How do we define God's Jealous Love? 2. Why doesn't God allow compromise in His covenant relationships? 3. How do worldly people and idolatrous things oppose God's jealous love? 4. How can we break the yoke of compromise?
Pastor Josh Underwood continues to help us understand God's attributes by focusing on God as Father. Pastor Josh helps us to understand four things: 1. The Lord's prayer reveals how we can relate to God as Father 2. There's warfare against our identity as God's children 3. Our Father has not left us as orphans 4. Examples of what a Holy Father's love looks like.
Pastor Josh Underwood begins the semester long journey through understanding God's attributes starting with His primary attribute, which is His Holiness. Pastor Josh helps us to understand four things: 1. What does it mean that God is holy? 2. How is it that God is holy? 3. Why it matters that God is holy? And 4. How should we respond to this Holy God?
