The ArchaeoTech Podcast is a place to discuss all things tech as they relate to Archaeology. Join Doug and Russell as they dive into the world of technology and apply it to the study of the past.
Archaeology is always seen as a field pursuit and for the most part, it is. However the interpretations of archaeology should be accessible to all. Our guests today, Dr. Alessandro Sebastiani and Dr. Laura Morabito presented their thoughts on accessibility in archaeology at the World Archaeology Summit in Alula, Saudi Arabia in September 2023. They discuss things like 3D reconstruction and VR as tools to bring people to archaeological sites and research without physically bringing them there.Contact Chris WebsterTwitter: @archeowebbyEmail: chris@archaeologypodcastnetwork.com Paul ZimmermanTwitter: @lugalEmail: paul@lugal.comArchPodNet APN Website: https://www.archpodnet.com APN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnet APN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnet APN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnet Tee Public Store: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/archaeology-podcast-network?ref_id=5724Affiliates Motion: https://www.archpodnet.com/motion Liquid I.V.Ready to shop better hydration, use my special link https://zen.ai/thearchaeotechpod to save 20% off anything you order.

Conferences have pretty much never changed in the archaeology world. We're still doing the same things we've done for decades. Though excavation is pretty much synonymous with archaeological fieldwork in the popular and professional imagination, the bulk of the work that we, as archaeologists, do is survey. In the decades that Chris and Paul have been doing archaeological survey we've seen great improvements in how they can be planned and carried out, in large part do to tech that's more ubiquitous, robust, and cheaper than it was when we started. Here's an episode from The Archaeotech Podcast about representing cultural sites in VR. Eric Hanson of Blue Planet is a specialist in employing virtual reality applications to the study and conservation of cultural heritage resources. He has pioneered the development of sophisticated methods to capture rock art and other indigenous imagery so that the general public and interested researchers can immerse themselves in a three-dimensional virtual gallery within the natural and cultural landscape. The technology has come a long way and the experience is now other worldly. Hanson's cutting-edge efforts allow for a 360 degree and parallax sensitive encounter. In the wake of some tragic events AND an unseasonable hot summer we're talking about field safety tech. Good tech can not only keep you safer, but, it can make you more efficient as well. Sometimes just being more efficient IS being more safe. We're joined by Rachel Roden from Wildnote who will help us find some cool, useful, things. Dr. Ed Gonzalez-Tennant joins us again in Paul's absence to tell us about the site he's been working on for many years now: The Rosewood Cemetery in Florida. Situated on private land, the Rosewood cemetery is difficult to get to and difficult to maintain. Without some sort of official support it's likely to stay that way. Ed has been documenting the cemetery using a number of recording means. This work has culminated in the virtual Rosewood Cemetery. We talk about that process and the implications regarding virtual archaeology in the near future. Start your own podcast with Zencastr and get 30% off your first three months with code TAS. Archaeologists have been 3D scanning artifacts for a while now. But, what do you do with those scans? We post them on websites, use them in reports, and try to do some analysis, but, it's not consistent. This new paper from PLOS ONE is from the architects of a new software, Artifact 3D, that intends to take those scans and perform some high-level, detailed, analytical algorithms that are consistent and repeatable. We talk about it on this week's episode. Interested in learning about how to use X-Rays and similar technology in archaeology? Check out the linked PaleoImaging course from James Elliot! MEMBERS CHECK YOUR BONUS PAGE FOR A GREAT BONUS SEGMENT! We talk a lot about how to get archaeologists to learn more outside the field of archaeology in order to better understand archaeology. On this episode we talk to JD Calvelli from the University of Chicago's Center for Radical Innovation and Social Change (RISC) about gamifying the learning of data science. However, this isn't for adults; it's for 4th-6th graders! Adults are able to learn as well, though. Learn something new and do it in a fun way. An important component of scientific research is reproducibility. In other scientific fields like medicine, protocols (step-by-step instructions) help ensure that another lab or another researcher can test our results. Lately, protocols for various technical aspects of archaeological research have been published, so Chris and Paul discuss the value of these publications. We love it when archaeologists look at other technologies that on first glance are not appropriate for archaeology. However, they're willing to give it a try and report on the results! The researches in the article we discuss used an indoor positioning system (IPS) to map an outdoor site in Israel. Their results are encouraging for this emerging technology. Brian Fritz is an archaeologist and inventor that saw an issue with deep digging in Pennsylvania. To help out he developed a new machine that can basically do an auger test down to 7 meters, log the levels along the way, and there's an attached mechanized screen. It's a pretty cool system and we hear how he developed it and what he hopes to do in the future with this new system. Brian's Bio Brian L. Fritz is the Principle Archaeological Investigator for Quemahoning, LLC, a cultural resources consulting business that specializes in geoarchaeology, soil geomorphology, and GIS solutions for archaeological problems. Mr. Fritz has earned a B.S. in geology and a B.A. in Anthropology from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and M.S. in Geology at the University of Akron.
